Ludum Dare 50 April 2–5, 2022

Day one

I spent most of the time I had on graphics. I'm still kind of clueless about the actual gameplay. I hope I can figure out something tomorrow. I really don't want to do a "how long can you last before you inevitably die" kind of game. Oh and remember to keep backups!

OGK-Games

Hello, our OGK Games team wishes all members productive work and a good time. Before Ludum Dare the composition of the team has changed, but there's nothing wrong with that) New people always give variety in projects and method of work.

We realized that we have a mascot, what do you think about him? ogkemgames/emcat.jpg

Current State

~7 hours of work ... I will finish it tomorrow  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XxIv2UieiA

uh-oh

Finishing the second sprint.

Had a cool idea gameplay almost feature complete. Just chilling to regain focus.

The whole world is flooding!

floodoutline.gif

With every step you take, the water rises.... Will our frog hero make it to higher ground? Or is this just delaying the inevitable?

Don't Do This

A note to everyone: Don't spawn objects that spawn other objects at an exponential rate.

Seems like a no brainer. Clearly, then, I don't have a brain. Unity is frozen. Capture.PNG

Edit: Had to force quit unity. Lost a decent bit of in editor progress, but the files are fine of course.

Having issues with blog (Titles are fine)

Hey everyone, I can't seem to type blogs. Descripion section greys out the moment I click it. I've copied this from notepad and will try to paste it. If you see it, that worked but it's not ideal obviously. Anyone has any idea? Using Win10, Chrome.

PS: Problem solved, it was grammarly.

Problem Solved!

Thanks to @LudumDare on twitter, problem's solved: Grammarly caused issues, disabling it on LD website fixed it!

Progress after ~12 hours

There's the van. There's the road, the cars, an infinite level. I even added physics-based water barrels. No collisions yet. I'm learning Godot 3D as I'm going

Just Started!

I was on vacation last week and didn't get home until late last night, so I'm definitely a bit behind schedule. Still trying to figure out a lot of basic things, but I'm in! Not sure if I'm doing Compo, Jam, or the new category, so I have a lot to do.

I'm using Unity, Cinema4D for 3D, Ableton Live + Reason for audio, Photoshop + Illustrator for 2D.

Really bad first day...)

I had a lot of ideas, but found interesting to make a game about survival =)ldjam1.png I was working a lot but game is still in early-dev stage. I need to speed up maybe. Idk

The Good Life

Just finished composing the character of my first R3F game project: The Good Life First line of code on the way!

old (1).png

First day of the jam is over and we are super excited!

002.png It's @wizard-frog's and my first contribution to the LD Jam. After our first day we are already able to send little forces of evil to annoy the local towns! They even do little screams :-)

We are doing the jam with a self imposed twist: Just like in the Compo we are creating everything from scratch without code, graphics or sound from elsewhere. So far so good!

UI sketch

Here is another sketch of the game, this time with UI elements and a 16:9 ratio. sketch_2.jpg

End of day 1

I have all I need for at least one level, but I plan for a second level and a boss for tomorrow.

Here are the basic enemies, here to collect the magician's tax:

First day progress

Still using placeholder art, but at least I got something up and running.

First time using Godot for Ludum Dare.

Still no idea what to call this game, currently I can only think of "Oscillation Game" which is quite boring.

My Day 1 Progress!

It's nearly 3.00 AM here in my country and LD50 started on 8.00 AM yesterday. I should get some sleep.

Here's what I got done! Core gameplay is mostly finished.

Tomorrow I'll be - Adding Audio - Balancing - Check for bugs - Add more visual effects if I have time to add to the immersion

Good night & good luck everyone!

First day of Ludum Dare

Well, first day of Ludum Dare almost passed, and only thing i can say is... I have almost no progress. It's even harder as i'm participating in Compo. I feel upset

Unity_bsr3owWWU1.png

My progress

Had to do some things this morning, but now I can work on my game! Not that much right now but I will have something soon!

Some in-game animations

I am taking the baton from @13x666

Here comes some in-game animations :)

Stages of game jam:

  1. Damn, so much work ahead, feels impossible
  2. This doesn’t make any sense, we’ll probably fail this time (—> WE’RE HERE <—)
  3. Hey, this is actually moving along better than expected
  4. Wtf, how did we pull this off?

Constellation Fundamentals

The basic mechanic is finally ready! I'll have to figure out how to balance it to go infinite, but that's for later. I'm just glad that the basic game mechanic is working now!

Constellations.gif

Next up: overworld view / interaction, and maybe some graphic design. I've grown tired of these temporary assets. I just hope that my engine can support better graphics. Haven't updated it yet and I really should after the jam is over.

Update 2: rooms!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJHcN87Pu0E Next up is collision, and being able to enter other rooms.

Some Sketches

Unfortunately, I got a late start, but here are some sketches I was working on last night.gameplayemsketches/em01.jpgsmashemcity/emtitle_sketch.jpg

A game with a lot of nukes

Hi there. This is my first Ludum Dare. I'm making a game where nukes do what nukes do. And here is a gif where some nuking takes place

nukes.gif

First day is over!

yeah so i've been silent about the game because I've been nonstop working on it (AND I'VE ACCOMPLISHED SO LITTLE OH MY GOD). for the first time though i feel like the ideas are very many, even if i don't like the theme particularly. also i'm joining with a couple of friends so it's much more stimulating.

saddas.gif

Finished the game

I'll add updates before the compo ends, but by and large it is done!

First day almost over !

Very proud with the progress I made so far, but still a lot to do ! Eventually the sandcastle will be destroyed by waves

End of day one progress

We decided on a stock market crash card game for Delay the inevitable. Me and @Pegasys have the basic functionality of the card game implemented, tomorrow we plan to flesh out the card mechanics and start adding visual polish.

First day progress

Full disclosure I hate this theme, but this is what I have come up with so far, I hope everyone else has had a better time haha.

optimed pond.gif

End of Day 1

Well, a lot of work has been done today. I mainly spent time on graphics, and so far I like it. Tomorrow I will deal mainly with mechanics.

Screenshot_912.png

The main character is finally ready!

This was a productive day. We did a lot of stuff but this gobling is the best :\/ Ok back to develop! have a great time!eYCCw8N1kP0.jpg

Morning everyone

Here's the progress for the first day... ezgif.com-gif-maker.gif In this game your job as the player is to delay the worst posible inevitable thing - getting up. You do this by DESTROYING your motivation: seeing how popular your friends are, considering your existance when you see how much work needs to be done and more... I'm having a lot of fun so far and I hope I can finish the game in time for the Compo. Hope your ideas and games are coming along well! Bye for now.

concept: you are a robot with a constantly ticking battery, which goes down every 4 seconds, and you must delay the inevitable battery outage by collecting energy. green is +2 (2/10 chance), yellow is +1(4/10 chance), and red is -1(4/10 chance) i need playtesters, if anyones open i'll release demo. still has a few bugs though

End of day 1

Nobody like paying taxes, right ? Too bad, you have to do it until you die. But what if there were a way to simply not do taxe ? Unity_r5SqocPFBg (2).gif

It's still a work in progress, considering I'm working alone, I'm quite pleased to have the gameloop pretty much finished at this point. I just need to adjust the gameplay now. It's quite a lot of fun !

Misfortune in the Galaxy - Devlog 1

Hi, This year we are participating in a team of three. We decided to use Unreal Engine this time and it went really well for us. Despite of problems with custom lightning system everything is going surprisingly good.

We came up with idea of Engineer repairing a space ship. You will be assigned with various tasks to prevent the ship from total anihilation :D .

Screen of mocup interior. We prepared many other objects, which are waiting for implementation. screen1.png

And editor screen ;) screen2.png

Good luck!

I reached the goal for the day!

ld50_part3.png

Today was great! I reached my goal for the day; making a playable game. There is a lot of stuff I'm proud of, such as: the random level generation, the fact that colission works, the wonky ai which is pretty scary actually ^^"

Tomorrow I'll add more features. I like to keep track of everybodies scores. The places where people died, will have a tombstone for instance. Also.. Powerups!! Lets see how crazy this game can get!

You can play a prototype by clicking here: https://www.wouter52.com/PROJECTS/LD50_NIGHTLY/

Right now there are 7 prototypes, in the future more will be added. The 7th is the final one for today.

that part where u finish the programmer art

so now u have no excuses left to delay (hehe) opening your engine and actually working

how do y'all get into your prototypes so fast, executive dysfunction and anxiety MURDER me lmao programmer art fish sprite.png

Boss n°2 !

And here's the second boss of my boss rush compo entry. Only one left, but first... SLEEPgranpa4.gif

End of day

Alright. I finished first day. I made not a lot of things, but basic engine and world generation system is here, so i hope i have time to finish game. Also idk how to name it =) ldjam2.png

first day

the first day was truly wild! finished almost all gameplay stuff, but there is too much visual that i need to do... hope i'll have time before the end of compo. i wish i didn't have to sleep how did your first day of ludum dare went?

ah yess collision

Game loop Complete

Immagine.jpg So, is a simle game where you sum binary numbers.

Can i polish it enought to make it fun to play?

Wasted A Quarter Of The Compo, Time To Speed-Code

I managed to do the very professional move of forgetting I agreed to run some errands and do some volunteer refereeing for a youth soccer game today, so 6 hours of doing that plus being nice to myself and letting my body get a whole 6 hours of sleep last night means I've already wasted a quarter of the Compo doing non-Ludum Dare stuff.

On the plus side, taking a break from sitting at my computer and drinking a probably unhealthy amount of Coca-Cola has restored my energy, and there's still over half of the Compo left. Looks like I'll either have a pretty short yet complete game or I'll be switching to the Jam to make my game last more than about a dozen minutes (which I very much wish to avoid doing).

Day 1 almost over...

... and I'm pretty happy with the progress so far!
Managed to not do a lot of polishing already like in previous LDs but instead concentrate on the core gameplay loop and I'm strangely proud of that fact :) (except for screenshake, gotta have early screenshake in there ^^)
I got a game that is pretty much fully playable and quite fun already, but the todo-list is still quite long. Before this day really ends for me I'll try to make some music, and tomorrow is mostly about visuals and polish. Might add one or two more mechanics still though.
Hope you're all having a great time and getting along nicely! Looking forward to all those games that I will inevitably play, without that much more delay :) ezgif.com-gif-maker.gif

Day 1 Wrap Up

It's going well enough with our egg society (just noticed: no eggs in this picture). Idea feels a bit overly ambitious, but i always like the challenge.

Road and building placement is done and works nicely, but no goods are produced or transported yet - not to think of attack/defend mechanisms. Will be a close one! But we got a super team assembled - details later :D

Day 1 done!

This is my first Ludum Dare, I'm not entirely sure if I can finish everything in 72 hours, however, there is at least the Extra category. Today I added the basic mechanic to the game. time_0.gif

Halfway done

Made some good progress on day 1. Most of the gameplay and art is finished, will focus on music, sound effects and levels tomorrow.

Here is a GIF of the DEMO Level:

Coming along!

Excited to be doing this game jam with @Clairric and @Cinsynate again! Animations are starting to shape up~!

Composed so far

I abandoned my own project and have instead joined 2 others in making a game. I'm doing the music. In our game the player has to keep a fire going and there's a day and night cycle.

Candle (small).jpg

The music ended up being a bit more upbeat than intended, and for some reason it reminds me of both Kirby and the old Star Tropics games on the NES. And there's a bit of latin influence in there too it seems.

Day 1 progress

The team did a lot of drawing, animating, designing and coding!
Looks like a good time to call it a day.

Everyone is working hard

Everyone on our team is working hard on making an awesome game. We decided to go for an endless-runner kind of game (a little bit like Doodlejump).

@hacktier is working on the player model: A fox. The model is finished, and we are currently working on rigging and animations. WhatsApp Image 2022-04-02 at 23.41.18.jpeg

@mk-awesome is working on the background graphics for our game. For this he made scribbles on paper and recreates those scenes in illustrator:

WhatsApp Image 2022-04-02 at 23.41.37.jpeg

And I am working in Unity and preparing the game code itself for all the models / graphics. The core game-loop is finished (jumping, collecting pickups, gameover, highscores, etc.) and now I am working on implementing more platform types and pickups:

CleanShot 2022-04-02 at 23.42.58.png

I am scrapping my idea entirely. i do not have time ti make it even fun, much less decent. so, I have another idea to get it done

Virus Defender

A simple virus defender roguelike. You play as a leukocyte and have to destroy the viruses as long as possible.

End of day 1 - almost working prototype

This first day has been quite hard, but we've managed to overcome most of the difficulties so far.

DSCF5499.JPG

What do we have, and what's next?

Well, the first thing is that the player can now build some buildings, that's a start for a "city" builder. There's still some buildings to implement, work to be done on the UI, as well as a LOT of testing on game mechanics. And then we'll have to work on music and sound FX. And of course, a lot of polish needs to be done (some animations, etc.)

Capture d’écranem2022-04-03/em00-22-12.png

But for the moment we're quite happy with what we've done, and we're going to sleep.

Graphics Update

Got bored of looking at the same temporary assets, so I made some new sprites with animations for the game. The background may change later, depends on how much spare time I'll have (probably none).

graphics update.gif

Also figured out how to balance the game a bit. Will implement that tomorrow, after I get some rest.

Now that I'm looking at the gif, it also seems like it doesn't capture most of the detail it has. It's way more detailed that what you're able to see. I'd still like to modify it a bit if I get the chance though.

Day 1, I am tired

This is my first ludum dare and second game jam in general- I'm entering the jam as I have a team member working on music this time (and those yummy, extra 24 hours. Mmmm.) Got pretty much all of my basic code down for the systems needed for my point and click.... My sooper dooper music team member is working hard to get all that stuff done, and it sounds 100x better than my game thus far. Thus, I must make my game 100x better, logically. The art for a couple of the areas are done- hoping to have 6 little areas like this in total! Mind yourself, everyone, and get good sleep!! First day nearly over

The amazing people in this team have been working hard on Unity and aseprite all day whilst I've been coming up with story ideas. Looks like things are really coming together. Excited to share what we have in store!!

Goofy assets

I dropped my first 2 ideas :sob: , here are bad assets for the third! (modular characters) screen2.png

Getting much closer!

It's still pretty patchwork but there is actually somewhat of a story. If any one has any feedback it would be very much appreciated! I still need music and alot more art https://alexanderchatham.github.io/LudumDare50/ Not Today _ Ludum Dare 50 progress video-high.gif

Isometric Prototype

I've been creating a Tile Level Generator to help us on Level Design in the long run and It's starting to come together very well! I can't wait to share the whole game concept with everyone! :flag_dz: s.png

A nice first day

hop.png 1AM and we have a working prototype, alpha version for tomorrow at 12:)
Have a good night fellow devs and fighting!!

Try Again: Day #1 Progress

Well, this day just flew by, didn't it? I don't know if it's thew fact that I chose to write a story and do some very minor coding in Twine 2, rather than taking on pixel art or even 3D responsibilities, like I usually do... but man it feels like today was just 12 hours rather than 24.

The Plan

A couple of ideas floated to the top, but the one I decided on is something I have been meaning to do for a while, with the theme simply giving me a direction to work in.

title_screen.png

Writing a complete start-to-end narrative with some branching, and choices affecting story beats that follow later was the reason I picked up Twine 2 to begin with. I just never really got around to giving it a go. So that's what I am doing, writing a side mission for a fictional cyberpunk game. But it won't be a side mission for our protagonist, oh no. He's just delaying the inevitable.

The Tone

Cyberpunk also somehow means Film Noir, right? So I have to write it from first person view, like a detective from the 50's who just threw his fedora aside and is now sipping a bourbon.

intro.png

Aside from writing a story I've spent a good chunk of time tweaking the CSS to get an appropriate vibe through color, font choice and, uh... border widths? As shown in the first image, a brief bit of photoshopping a logo was also a part of the day.

The Big Picture

These nodes might say 'chapter' but don't worry, these chapters are merely paragraphs. And the colors indicate things! Oooh, exciting.

schematic.png

There is a lot left to do to try and make the story satisfactory to play through, but I am glad I planned out the entire outline. I always thought I was better at starting small and scaling from there, but going from macro to micro gives me a lot more confidence, given that I know where I need to go with it all.

But now I sleep.

Thumbs v6.png

Day 1 Progress

I've managed to get the basic mechanics done today. There are enemies that roam the game world and will kill you if you touch them, checkpoints you can activate to respawn when you die, and collectible power-ups that help you deal with enemies and obstacles and allow you to access new areas. Here are the two I have implemented so far:

video3.gif

Fireballs can also light torches, some of which will open doors for you. How handy!

With the basic stuff in place, I'll be spending Day 2 expanding out the game world, and adding new enemies, powers, obstacles etc. Then it'll be on to the polish stuff like music, sound effects, and some snazzy particles, and if I'm happy with it, I can hopefully submit to Compo this time!

Micronauts: Using Snapchat AR

I've been building games in Unity for years, but for LD50, I'm using Lens Studio and publishing to Snapchat (!!!). I work at Snap, so it's not huge leap technically, but I'm excited to finally challenge myself with something different!

micronauts - early 1.gif
