Ludum Dare 50 April 2–5, 2022

Engine Progress!

I'm happy to say that my engine is coming along nicely! It's almost got all of the required functionality so I can start focusing on the game I am actually going to make.

The engine can be found at: https://github.com/haxx0rm4n/ldbb

I created a sample game in the process of developing the engine, a simple Etch-a-Sketch clone; this can be found in the engine's repository.

screenshot.jpg

Concept? Lock in!

Instead of trying to come up with an off-the-wall interpretation of the theme - this time I decided to just make a straight-forward game. Hopefully it still turns out to be fun.

I did a bit of art tonight so I can enjoy the mechanics programming tomorrow, but now I need to sleep so I can put some good energy into programming tomorrow. Hopefully I don't regret getting some basic art out of the way rather than basic mechanics. That sounds a bit backwards to how people usually recommend things.

Hope you all are doing as well (or better) than I am. Good luck on the development!

Brainstorming

Finished my Brainstorming and started to code, honestly the theme was my least favorite of all the final ones, but I think it will work out.

I think I'm going with Death for a Day as it seems to be the easiest to create and while I have joined three jams before I have never actually finished one, though it is admittedly the least interesting theme.

basic idea is a turnbased/gridbased puzzle game where you move around a map and reap souls while staying out of line of site of other reapers (hopefully time to create multiple types with different mechanics).

Ideas for 'Delay the Inevitable' theme

  • Turn based strategy game where every map would eventually end in defeat, but you can retreat after gathering what resources you can, resources to use on the next map. Think FTL x Into the Breach.
  • Shop manager sim (think Recettear X Stardew Valley?), where the ever increasing loan payments will eventually bankrupt you and force you to sell the shop, keep your dream alive as long as possible.
  • Dystopic future where most people are plugged into a matrix style sim by choice. Try to hold out and live in the real world for as long as possible. Life sim where certain activities increase your happiness meter, if the meter hits zero you give up and join the VR world. Items break after so many uses so you will always give up in the end.
  • You are the evil lord and the prophecy foretells of you fall. You cannot avoid the prophecy but perhaps it can be delayed. How?
  • Evil Empire Management sim (Might be same as above). Every thing passes, even the Eternal Empire which has cast it's shadow over the world for as long as any can remember. You must ensure the hero never arises to overthrow your rule, by ensuring all citizens of your empire are content so none see themselves as the hero of legend. Build Schools and well funded Orphanages, etc to keep anyone from having a backstory tragic enough for them to become the hero.
  • Death comes for us all, he cannot be avoid, he cannot be outrun, but he can be bargained with.
    • Do deaths job for him, each day you complete his tasks in time you get to live for another day, but you can't let the other reapers catch on. (This may be the easiest idea to create during jam, could be turn based puzzle game.)
    • The price is high to stay the hand of death and it grows high with each day.
  • Card battler where you start with your whole deck, go for a high score and see how many opponents you can beat before you lose or run out of cards.
  • Nature vs Industry, delay the inevitable march of progress.

Fast Prototype #1

Not sure if we pick it though.

Prototyping with Tabletop Simulator!

Our best game idea for this theme so far is a card game, and so it was pretty easy to use Tabletop Sim to quickly prototype and playtest some simple mechanics.

A card game has a lot of design challenges that we didn't have in previous jams, but I'm excited to see what we can make.

screen00 - prototype.png

First update, followed shortly by sleep

I've got my central idea figured out, and I've got some of my basic IO stuff coming together. Gonna sleep on it now, as I had less than 4 hours sleep last night and a very stressful day, and I'll pick things back up in the morning. Here's a little teaser gif before I publicly reveal what my game is about:

luthwyhn-ld50 p8_1.gif

some freebie game ideas if you're feeling stuck

some unused game ideas from brainstorm. if you feel stuck trynna think up an idea, maybe these will at least help get you started!

1. Platformer: using some sort of pipes to drain a constantly rising water level 2. Avoid a giant wall of mouthy creature things by throwing food at them, to which they will swarm, eat, then descend on you instead, until you throw more food. Could be platformer or topdown?

i thought they were decent so im happy to share since im not usin em

:point_right: and if you decide to use one, definitely tag me or link the game to me when its posted! id really love to see your spin on the idea

Prototype tile placement working!

I've decided to go with a city builder (hopefully I don't abandon it 24 hours in like I did in LD49 lol) but this time with the twist it's happening on a sphere instead of a normal 2d grid. I was able to write a shader in Unity that can warp a 3D model to fit the exact footprint of the tile. This way I can (hopefully) avoid the alignment artifacts one would normally run into when tiling a sphere.

Nice Theme

I was all prepared to make a folklore game as well haha. Anyway, I'm awake, so my design document in full:

B-Game

You are a B.

Summer is here.

Winter is there.

Do B stuff to prepare.

No guns, just cosy gameplay. Let's a go!

nope nope nope nope nope

Almost 4 hours in and I'm a mile away from an idea I could get rolling with. There are a few threads that might be compelling but none of them are developed enough to start design or development.

I've been around the LD block a bunch of times and this ain't the first time I haven't had an idea on Friday night, but it never feels great.

Gonna sleep on it and see if anything inspires me to get running in the morning.

Maybe if I delay the inevitable sleep I can finish this (:

Its like Loop Hero + Slay the spire, where you will build and use a deck of challenges to create your hero's journey, until you will have to use the inevitable Dragon boss card, hoping that you got strong enough in the way.Screenshot_629.png

let’s gooooooo

working through our very first ludum dare w/ @riley9 ! let‘s see how this goes

I appear to have some kind of game...

I thought I was going to have to tack on the theme after the fact, but mechanically it appears the optimal thing is to delay the inevitable giant blob of color =) Recording 2022-04-01 at 22.05.33.gif

Night 1 Is A Success!

Day 1 was my most successful for a Compo ever. I'm going to bed night one with a minimum viable project ready go! Tomorrow I can go right into iteration and I couldn't be more pleased. Previous rounds I've gone to bed night one with nothing more than some ideas and really get to work Saturday.

Hope everyone else is having a great time with this one as well!

LD50 Night 1.PNG

Jumping right into Art

Got up 6 o'clock in the morning here without setting any alarm. Weird what excitement does to you xD

I decided pretty quick for a space shooter type of game and going for prerendered 2d images of 3d models for the ships.

stout.png

First ship is designed: Fighter-Type-Stout

Now i will try to get some coding done as it would be so tempting to come up with more ship designs. Its important not to overscope.

Night 1

Night one ran well :). My movement System for the player is in place and the A* for the Enemys performs nice (External Libary, for the first time :) ). I think this game will be good. I like the theme very much. Kind of has a Dark Souls feel to it.

Turning in for the night, not much done yet

Really liked the idea I had for the Only One Resource theme, so I'm repurposing it for Delay the Inevitable by making a sort of tower defense. Working with Unity since that's what I'm most used to. Didn't get much done tonight other than the start of a hex grid, but I'm gonna get a good rest to go at it all day tomorrow.

Well, it's a start!

frogwalkaround.gif

Got basic character graphics and movement support. Up next: level rendering...

Fast Prototype #2

Just keep doing prototypes

Bomb Flipper

Progress so far

https://youtu.be/iyHA5axCMZU

My game is called "Southbound Flight", you play as a goose migrating south for the winter, escaping the inevitable changing of the seasons. You press spacebar to keep in the air.

First couple hours

For me the jam started at 4 a.m. After an hour of trying to go back to sleep instead of brainstorming ideas I got a general concept and started working. I made the layout in Unity with a lot of stock icons... 1.png ...and then remembered that I'm aiming for the compo, so had to make art from scratch. Moved to photoshop, tried to draw a bedsheet, gave up and just made a photo of my bed. With some work, I think it looks decent. 2.png

Way too obvious or way too controversial

Whelp!

Joining again... Maybe this time even uploading something? (hah, prop not :/ )

Like all years, stuck on the theme. Either an endless runner where you get progressively slower but can boost it for a few seconds with random rare powerups Or a super controversial topic that might not land good in many people's opinion but would make a big societal commentary on the clubbing scene ...

So, doing some more brainstorming because I don't want to do the easy thing and don't think I can take the flack for the controversial thing..

To the drawingboard!!!

Normalno Delay

Normalno budet, inevitably.

Concept sketch is done!

I'm still not 100% happy with my theme, so I decided to make a concept sketch instead of coding in case I come up with something better in my sleep.

The denizens of Tartarus are destined to escape and wreck havoc on the mortal realm someday. As Tartarus's guard, the dragon Campe, it's your job to keep them imprisoned for as long as possible! Each punishment needs your attention to keep going, so you have to pay attention to all of them at once to ensure no one breaks free. How long can you protect the mortal realm from these criminals?

LD50 Sketch small.png

Otus and Ephialtes - giant brothers who tried to overthrow Zeus and were bound by snakes

Ocnus - imprisoned for an unspecified crime and forced to weave a rope while a donkey quickly ate the other end of it

Tantalus - for killing, cooking, and serving his son as a meal to the gods, all food and water recedes from his touch

Sisyphus - probably the most famous resident of Tartarus, he shared some of Zeus's secrets and has to push a boulder up a steep hill with impossible terrain

Tityos - on Hera's urging he tried to assault the goddess Leto (he's one of many of Zeus's illegitimate children, most of whom Hera tried to destroy), so he was sentenced to have two vultures eat his liver

Ixion - for trying to seduce Hera, he was tied to a flaming wheel

The Danaids - 49 of Daneus's 50 daughters who killed their 49 husbands (who were all also their cousins) and now spend eternity trying to fill up a leaking vase

Salmoneus - an ancient king who demanded his subjects worship him as better than Zeus; his punishment isn't super clear but one source suggests he was positioned under a teetering boulder always about to fall on his head

Did an art?

Had a DnD campaign today so didn't do much ( couldn't even do much art :/ )

Game Concept

Woke up 30 minutes ago, it's time for developing a new little weird game :) game_concept.jpg

Well it's 7AM-ish here in the UK, so let's goooo  Probably not one of my fave themes but hey ho, it's all good. Have a couple of ideas for this one pre-start (surprise dog party guests, death & taxes) but it's time to start the brainstorming and try to pare down the ideas into something simple and fun  Good luck everyone!

GoingIn.gif

Good morning everybody!

Just woke up and read the theme. It's an interesting one 🤔, and I already had a few quick and very simple game ideas in case I get stuck and cannot come up with something better... So now I'm gonna do just that :grimacing: think about possible game designs and mechanics while preparing breakfast with my girlfriend. She might think of something, too... :bread:

Streaming again for LD50!

Hi everyone! I'm part of this new LD, trying to do better than last time ^^ I'm currently streaming the development on twitch (mainly in French, but I can answer any question in English) : twitch.tv/lamisolah

Getting Started on Art!

Welcome to Project Shakespeare VS Monkeys! We're very excited to work on this! I'm PixelTaku, your gracious host and one of the artists on this game! I'm going to try to make semi-regular blog posts, whenever we hit another milestone!

Finally banged out most all of our basic game design stuff, now moving onto concept art and basic controls and scrolling! Got food around midnight, hoping this first day won't wreck us lol! IMGem7096.JPG IMG/em7098.JPG

hello your windows computer has virus

i didnt turn n windows for weeks and i need it for unreal engine now it acts weirdly. low on power paint lags but when i open task manager there is no process that ses a lot of resorces. well idk if im paranoied or just this virus turns itself of when ever task manger is open but ill keep it open just to be sure

Just got back from ER

The doctor says that it's ok my heart skips a beat twice per minute, so that means I can do LD. Now... what do I make?

Yee and Haw

YeeeHaw.gif Spent a fair amount of this afternoon trying to work out what to do with the theme and eventually settled for my silliest idea, but have some basic controls and player character art sorted.

Delay the inevitable

It was pretty hard for me to come up with something not related to the death. After an hour of brainstorming we came up with something, but here is a list of things we did not use:

[Delay your work on the project before deadline - you will have to finish it anyway]

[Delay your sinking ship - you will sink anyway]

[Delay your alarm clock - you will have to wake up anyway]

Maybe it will kick some ideas for someone.

Compo begins

Morning! Always a bit of a strange feeling to wake up on Sat morning and seeing people having made a head start :D Nonetheless, I'm in for the compo (third time in a row!).

Not hugely excited for the theme. Been thinking about it this morning and it feels like it prods the gameplay into a somewhat generic time trial direction. Finding it a bit tough to get away from the obvious ideas, but I'll give it a few hours.

How's it going?

What's up everyone?

Hope everyone got their idea finalised & started working!

I had 7 hours of sleep instead :) Have a solid idea now & started working on the gameplay!

See you on the other side! :P

golem!

I think I figured out a game idea

This time, it did not take me very long to figure out a possible game idea. It is not very original, in the sense that it's heavily inspired by a game I used to play and love as a kid. I think I'll just try to remake it in Godot in 3D, at least the base mechanics. Then, if there's time, I can start thinking about me own ideas and spins for the game.

I used to love this game a lot, and I always wanted to try and recreate it. This is a perfect opportunity! So, for me, this game jam will be less about figuring out what to do, and more about figuring out how to do it. As I wrote in a previous post, I'll be using Godot engine + my own Vim setup. Yesterday, I slapped together a basic Vim configuration for autocomplete. I just gotta hook it up to Godot today, so this will be a part of the challenge - code the game without an IDE.

Moreover, for the 3D stuff, I'm not gonna use Blender. I would have to re-learn it again, and there's not time for that. I'm gonna try and make the whole game only using the 3D primitives Godot already provides. This is gonna be fun! :muscle: :yellow_heart:

Priorities

After a yummy breakfast, I can start working on the game.

Remember to eat right and hydrate well!

IMG_2302.jpeg

We're off!

test.gif

Let's see if I can make this sparkle before my programmer wakes up.

...

test.gif

.. not quite as far as I liked, but it's a definite start.

So it is decided then

After realizing that I can't really get a grasp on the theme and seeing that I will be working with a new framework (Godot) for the first time, I decided to not overscope. So I'll enter with my probably least innovative idea of all time:

~~Steal~~ Make an homage to one of my favorite game concepts of all time: Warning Forever.

220px-WFBoss[1].png

It's basically an evolving timed boss rush shmup where the next boss's shape is informed by the way you destroy the previous one and you lose time everytime you die.

The concept is not terribly complex and the graphics can be fairly simplistic, but it's incredibly addictive and a lot of fun. This allows me to go easy on the actual design work and focus on making things go boom in a nice way, which will probably take a lot of pressure off.

So I'm aiming for flair and fun instead of innovation this time.

Wish me luck.

Getting started

Alright, so being French LD started in the night for me, I've woke up at 3 am to see the theme, took a notebook and write ideas in my bed for an hour.

I have an idea since sometimes ago that I want to prototype, and that seems fitting for this theme, I'll detail it when I'll have screenshots to save a bit of time.

Until 12:15 (it's now 9:45 AM) I'll do the core mechanic. Hope I won't have too much problem before lunch.

Here are the notes :

smallerNotes1.jpg smallerNotes2.jpg

EDIT : made the pictures smaller.

A whole lot of elephants

Going to give multiplayer another shot.

aemwhole/emlotemof/emelephants.gif

You can play in a single window and ask some friends to join. Or you play as a single player with four screens in one browser window.

Objective: protect an animal from a beast (Tiger/Lion) (which you propably fail to do since the elephants are slow and the beast is fast )

I'm in! Accompanied by my new synthesizer setup

I'm in for this one too! I did have quite a blast in the first 3 hours of LD already. It happens rarely that I come up with an idea that I enjoy right off the bat.

I hope I can focus a bit more on the atmosphere and music this time. I have updated my synthesizer setup and will hopefully add a great soundtrack to my submission.

synthemld/emjam_50.jpg

4 hours in and this is what I got so far!

In my first ludum dare I decided to go with the concept of arena-platformer-shooter where you have to keep fueling the GENERATOR with COOLANTS or it will EXPLODE!

Why is my gif not working

Only got the player's movement done. I'll go play some games myself and get back to it later!!

Night one feeling super productive

FirstemMinigame/emFlow.gif Turns out the first step in making a game about procrastination is implementing the inevitable work that the player will be trying to avoid. So much ugly prototype UI but the core interaction system is working so feels great for night 1 progress!

So I realized "Delay the inevitable" can be basically anything right?

See: Missile Command. The intent of that game wasn't to SAVE the earth from nuclear destruction, it was meant to DELAY THE INEVITABLE. So with that in mind I felt like I had a lot more freedom to do what I want with the right story. Finally got an excuse to try the old wallrunnin shooter

Idk how to embed the gif. I think it's too big..

https://actuallythreecats.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Unity_LLWQ7aqyCr.gif

Some Ideas for theme.

Preventing disease.

Old age.

Car running out of fuel.

Asteroid defense.

Endless runner.

Sinking boat.

Balancing objects as long as possible til they fall.

Endless tower defense, something like creepy world.

Progress as of first night

froghop.gif

Well, we can now walk around and hop up/down these little ledges. It's not nothing! Tomorrow I'll start working on putting together some actual game mechanics and building puzzles with this system.

Death & Taxes

DeathAndTaxesQuote.JPG But what if we could delay both as much as possible?

This is the direction I will be taking for this edition of LD 50. Good luck to you all ! :)

First night done!

Time to sleep well and continue working hard tomorrow! Goodnight everyone! Here are some more sprite my teammate made!BUGZ.PNG :O

Delay the pat?

So, we're trying to pat a cat, but find only things, dropped down...

Time for actual game development!

I've been working on my open-source Ludum Dare engine's functionality for the moment; however, it's "feature complete" enough to start making my game. More updates to follow as it comes together.

Getting started!

Here's a cursed progress pic. It'll be funny to compare my finished game to this!

It's a van!

Pixel Artist looking for a team - preferably haven't started / just started idea

Hi there, I'm not sure if I still got the chance to join. I had asked one team previously looking forward to join me in the game jam, turned down last minute. And then I asked another one, suddenly last minute unable to commit as well. Now here I am as solo artist, staring at the screen wondering what shall I do. I had ideas, my 2 votes - one of them is Delay is inevitable. I'm just wondering if any team out there lacking of pixel artist (My tool is aseprite / tiled for map), do let me know.

In case this message is not reachable to anyone, I guess I gonna pass this LDjam this time.

Game Idea Down!

Happy 20th Birthday LudumDare! 50 events is such a incredible milestone!

How are we feeling about the theme, Delay the Inevitable? Seeing some really neat ideas so far on the feed :D

Here's what HonestDan, BrainoidGames, and Spacey3D have come up with so far for our entry:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP1EY3AJPyU

Check out the progress of this game over at https://www.twitch.tv/honestdangames

the theme

The only thing I'm delaying is coming up with an idea :face_palm:

Make sure you stretch and walk around a bit

Going to be a long day in front of the computer, so be sure you keep your blood flowing and your muscles loose. Take a couple of minutes to walk around and do some stretches once an hour or so, your body and mind will thank you!

I'm off the mark

After a lot of brainstorming, I've settled on doing a Metroidvania-type game. The concept is simple: your wife is dying of a rare disease, and you must venture into a dangerous temple to retrieve a rare flower that won't cure her, but will at least delay the inevitable, and give you more time with her before she passes on. I'm gonna try and do two endings: a good ending where you return with the flower in time, and a bad ending where you don't.

I'm treating it as a spiritual successor to my LD43 entry, The Gods Are Angry. The story themes and gameplay are fairly similar, and as a result, I'm taking graphical cues from it as well:

preview1.png

Hopefully this time I don't overscope.

We are back making games!!))

Hello everyone, after our first success in the form of lost poem and the first failure of drunken hobo , we thought about everything and this time we will try to do something interesting, I hope all the teams have fun and do something cool, good luck and success at the ludum , remember it is not about winning it is about process, thanks for attention everyone

B-Game Art

Screenshot 2022-04-02 10.27.50.png

I've done more than I thought I would since starting 6 hours ago, implemented some simple flocking for the Bs and made a little art.

The goal will be to locate flowers to harvest, which will be a limited resource. Once the timer runs out, Winter arrives and your honey is divided amongst the workers. Run out of honey during a winter and it's the end of your reign Queenie.

Mr.Filton Deluxe | Draw to survive!

ezgif.com-gif-maker (6).gif

The game is about a sentient AI art software called Mr.Filton. He drew you into his game, and you now must defend yourself using your brush!! My goal is to create some kind of KidPix, but with a survival interface, where you draw your defenses.

This is what i have, now time to polish stuff, and create living brush things
