Ludum Dare 50 April 2–5, 2022

Status Report

I greatly overestimated the effort I needed to set up the hex map I wanted for my game, even with using a tutorial to help. Probably should have cut back on the map so I could focus more on things more integral to the gameplay loop, but I also want to have the map code nicely fleshed out so I can repurpose it for other projects where I want a hex map.

I was hoping to be able to submit for the Jam, but I'll have to see how much I can do tomorrow since I'm feeling like I should turn in for the night. If it doesn't seem like I can make something nice enough in time I'll submit for the Extra and try to work faster next time.

Ludum Dare 50 Compilation Videos

I play Ludum Dare games in a quick, one minute fashion, 10 per video! I'd love to play your game, so enter it into my sheet: https://forms.gle/SWWXjA9ZJaMvnmQcA

Still more WIP than I'd like!!

Going to bed, lots of things are written, but not all... I'd love to do some music and animation, but now it's time for sleep! LD50_Capture02.PNG

after more than 48 hours,

i finally finished my main mechanic, my small scope that was supposed to be doable in one day but i'm a dumb adhd baby dealing with grief brain frogs

i need to sleep and go to school and Try to finish it before 9 when i get back from school :^)

what i accomplished today: - lots of finicking with gravity problems and game feel - cat with fake janky amateur sprite stacking, and disembodied paw - holes with health, and debris fixes it - score (not shown but does exist) - lose condition (but nothing done with it yet besides a debug print statement) - replaced meme background with programmer art gradient - low res ripple animation to show where cursor is when clicked

what needs to be done before 9pm tomorrow :^) : - menu screen -- instructions/story screen after that maybe? - end screen with replay button, display score - music, sfx - maybe more game feel

where i need to cut my losses: - art polish - pause menu - settings

ugh, i'm so sick of this game lol, get it out of my face

i'd post a gif but i can't get my recorder to make a good one that's long enough to show stuff off but small enough to upload :sob: happy jamming, wish me luck lol

End of Day 2 Update!

My original goal was to finish all the mechanics before Day 3 so I could spend all of Monday polishing. And... I think I've accomplished that? All eight minigames are fully functional, losing all of them moves the player to the game over screen, the timer counts up, the difficulty increases as time goes on... It's ugly and has no instructions or audio, but it's playable? The bones were sure lying when they said everything would go perfectly, but maybe they were telling the truth that things would eventually turn out acceptably!

A Contemplative Experience

This year's theme of "Delay the Inevitable" hit me pretty hard and it got me thinking: instead of feeling stressed out about the inevitable, would it be possible to learn to accept it? I've heard that if you want to experience more life, focus on being more present. So I made Life of a Floof to try and reflect that.

My thought was to try to make a "clicker" type game, but instead of frenetically clicking to get the highest score, your clicks are more thoughtful. Each click delays the inevitable death of a mysterious creature you've encountered. The pacing is meant to mimic heartbeats and breathing. As you progress, it's meant to be less about the clicking and more about finding calm and slowing down the pace.

In the end, I think it's more of an "experience" than a game. But if you're in the mood for that, the whole thing just takes a few minutes and I would love for you to check it out.

I challenged myself to create a game with no engine, only C++ and OpenGL.

The Deadline Game 04em04/em2022 03em18/em49 ص.png

For the compo, I tried to create a ready to play Windows game using a plank project, C++, OpenGL, open source repos like (glm, ImGUI) and Cmake, with all code written in the 2 days window Link to repo.

I tried to not use any art assets, so created the game around 2D Boxes.

I have implemented the game engine in simple ECS (Entity-Component-System) style, and simple rendering system and physics system (AABB).

"The Deadline Game"

The game is ready to play on windows with a high frame rate and 21MB of stable memory allocation.

Feel free to ask about the process or how the code works, I would be more than happy to share.

I didn't have the time to implement a lose state but that's a win right?!

What's Better Than...

Your game development tool goes rogue and decides to do everything EXCEPT what you want to do, wasting precious, valuable time! I suuuure could be, you know, ACTUALLY MAKING THE REST OF THE DAMN GAME!!!

Sorry, I just wanted to vent.

Edit: I was trying to do a fancy custom-made solution for animation, but since GameMaker: Studio 2 kept having a hissy fit, I just decided to do the default style.

Buncha stuff

I'm amazed we still don't have a backdrop for all this. Nonetheless, the game is coming together nicely. Got most of the gameplay there, gonna need a few more assets, a few more pieces of UI and stuff, and a bit of TLC to finish it off. Excited!

Time for a nap.

The end is in sight!

Man, this Game Jam proves once again that my eyes are bigger than my stomach! But for all we had to cut, I'm unusually proud of what we threw together.

Delay the inevitable loss of your socks

Hi. Did you ever just couldn't find some of your socks after washing them? Well... this small game is about just that. Don't let those pesky socks escape!

I made this thing in about 17 hours. If you want, you can check it out here.

I'm done!

Ok! I'm done!

Missed the Compo deadline, but submitted under JAM. I hope you enjoy it!

Tomorrow I'll just do some marketing stuff (screenshots, logo, better description)
