Ludum Dare 51 September 30–October 3, 2022

Late start but good progress

So here in Sweden, the start of the jam was a bit unfortunate since it was in the middle of the night. I had to stay up until theme reveal and then go to bed to get some rest. Fortunately I got a good idea for my game while getting to sleep and progress this morning has been quite good. Hopefully the 7 hour loss of time wont be an issue.

Level loading is working and some animation tests are in as well. Next up is player controls!

I'm in!

Will be participating in the 48 hour compo this time.

Oh, the theme... I did "10 seconds" back in 2013. Maybe I should make a game themed "every 9 years ... history repeats itself". But I feel like doing 10 second minigames right now.

Tools: - jgame.js (https://github.com/borisvanschooten/jgame.js) - tinyspriteeditor (https://github.com/borisvanschooten/tinyspriteeditor) - gimp - audacity - jsfxr (https://sfxr.me/) - LMMS (if I get round to music)

Good luck everyone!

Some progress for The Belter(WIP) game

A difficult theme to say the least!

Was contemplating on simply skipping LDJAM51, but decided to brute-force the start to see how it goes and boy am I motivated right now!

Good luck to other developers!

Yes I may probably never grow up. Oh, by the way, I'll make a game about trains.

I was thinking about making a game about Manuel Valls, but nobody will understand this take about the theme (the city of Evry). And who wants to support thinking about him during an entire week end ?

Need Help

Its my first Game Jam and I have come to home from the school an hour before and idk how to find a idea for my game so PLESS i need help how to find a idea. Think of your first game jam and give me your experience i need you guys help PLEASE!!!!!

11 hours since theme dropped

took 2 breaks so it's been about 10hours work but man the Brain Fog is a Demon scope down? what's coping down??? tetris is easy to make riiiiigggghhhhhhhttttt i already had partial code from an abandoned tetris project so it should be eaSSyyy riGGGHHHTTT but alas i never solved certain problems in that abandoned tetris project thus forcing me to solve them here and it is Exhausting

i have concerns about what i'll be able to get done over the jam and i'm getting sleepy enough that my brain ghosts are saying "this is bad, this isn't as creative/innovative as your other entries, The Theme Sucks and you should have spent more time brainstorming"

which is to say, oh well, at least the next one's in January, even if this one turns out Bad so I'll keep on trucking but might be another jam instead of compo entry for me, yet again lol getting too tired to think though, made a lot of tiny dumb mistakes in my shape factory logic, so I think it's time to rest and push a day 1 commit to github i guess since I set it up in github desktop and everything, which i forgot about til just now lol

good luck with your games everyone your prototypes all look fantastic!!

Streaming development

Hey folks! Our day 1 development stream is just kicking off, come say hi!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkmJty4imHk

Might have to quit

Haven't slept all night due to feeling very sick. We'll see how I feel tomorrow. Judging on my current status, I'm pretty sure this Jam is a bust for me :(

Need any ideas? We got you!

Our team woke up a bit ago after a good brainstorming session yesterday!

In case you hate the theme or love it but have no idea what to create either way, here are some of our leftover ideas!

I'll split these up in three types: Movement/Combat, Pile Up, Other

Movement/Combat

These ideas are definitely a bit on the more difficult side to implement correctly, but still fun nonetheless!

Ultimate Shooter

Every 10 seconds, a new wave is spawned in, and you can run around and have to survive (killing/pacifist?)

This is your basic enemy shooter game where a new wave of enemies comes in every 10 seconds! You can mix this up by removing the player their gun, so it becomes more about running away from tons of enemies.

Quick-Time RTS

Every 10 seconds, the player has to decide where to move or attack. The player only has x amount of turns to finish the level.

With this, think of Crypt of the necrodancer, Xcom, Fire emblem, etc. The player will be given a goal, and has x amount of turns to complete it. Each turn the player has 10 seconds to decide what action to take (moving, attacking, using items, etc).

Rushed Parkour

Every 10 seconds, the player has to reach the next checkpoint or get teleported back to the previous checkpoint. This could be your basic platformer game (or put an extra spin on it, like Getting over it or Celeste) BUT you have to reach the next point within the 10 seconds which can make the game a lot more difficult and more about finding the best way forward. A lot of balancing involved!

Pile Up

These games are about giving the player more work every 10 seconds!

Minigame Hell

Every 10 seconds, a new puzzle is added to your desk, if you have x amount of unsolved puzzles you fail. The player is given a new tiny minigame every 10 seconds and can choose to work on the minigame or wait for the next one. If a minigame is unsolved for too long OR too many minigames are on the table you lose!

Let us in!

Every 10 seconds, a new person joins the group and you have to check their id/card to see if they are allowed in. If x people are waiting, or if you messed up x amount then you fail.

Kinda like Not Tonight and Papers Please!

Paperworks Please

Every 10 seconds, more paperwork is added to your desk. If you don't complete the paperwork on time OR when too much paper work is added, your desk overflows and you fail the game. (Or if you mess up paperwork)

Same kind of idea as the previous two, but a lot more simplified, fix up paperwork and send it in, don't keep the paperwork waiting or your desk might overflow!

Other

Some games that don't fit a certain type.

Push It

Every 10 seconds, the player has to push a button. A narrator will talk about how to player is pressing the button well, or how the player is messing up.

This is a very story-based game where the player has to press a simple button every 10 seconds, a narrator will talk about the player's decisions and maybe throw some plot twists throughout the game.

Timely Tasks

Every 10 seconds, a minigame is shown that has to be completed in the allocated time.

Very similar to Minigame Hell, but this time the player has 10 seconds to complete one minigame, if they fail they lose, what highscore can you get?

That's it for now, I'll talk later about what idea we went with. Good luck everyone!

Day 1 progress!

This is my first ever Ludum Dare, as well as my first Compo! Having a ton of fun so far.

So far I've created...

  • A system that transitions levels
  • My first level
  • My player player.gif
  • A message that appears if you don't move within five seconds of starting the game
  • Lighting
  • A normal map that won't be used because it's an object that occludes
  • My main mechanic

Looking forward to day 2!

Cute Cat

We have achieved cube switch in Unity, and drew some cute cat! Cute cat.png

I think I finally have an idea for a game

I've been struggling for the past 3 and half hours to come up with a decent idea for a game. And technical difficulties with the editor. Oh well. I was thinking about making a simple drag&drop city builder where some event happens every 10 seconds. But I cannot come up with any meaningful goal. Then there was a shoot em' up, you either shoot every 10 seconds, reload your gun every 10 seconds, or enemies respawn every 10 seconds. Again, a little generic and boring, and I could not find any good game goal besides just surviving.

Finally, this idea popped up about cooking pizza. You receive a new order every 10 seconds and have to make pizza with those ingredients. The final pizza is then scored. You see a table, next to that is an oven and buckets with ingredients (I think), and you drag&drop ingredients together to mush them, then throw them in the oven.

Gray box the game

começamos fazendo a mecanica do jogador e alguns obstaculos para teste no cenario e habilidades do jogador, pulo, caminhar, agachar, etc

we started doing the player mechanics and some obstacles to test the scenario and player skills, jumping, walking, crouching, etc.

I might have to forfeit, can't even crack jokes (no it's not the theme)

I mean yes, the theme took me 4 hours to figure out which was the longest I spent in any of my dares, but I did settle with a good enough idea.

No, the problem is that both my custom sprite editor and Unity texture importer is throwing their own unique bugs. Luckily I found and fixed my own bug but I'm not sure I can say the same for Unity's "unique identifier" issue.

Compo doesn't seem likely, and worst case I might have to forfeit Jam even. Can't really tell at the moment but the prospect is not looking good.

Dodge48 - First 30 min...

Ok.

Found an idea, started execution.

Genre : Multiplayer dodgeball like.

Rules: * Each player has a color * You have a certain amount of balls * You can throw them. Each ball that hits a player is picked up, and become of his color * Every 10 seconds you are scoring 1 point if you are the one that has the color with the less balls * After 10 time 10 seconds, the player with most points wins.

Let's see if it can code & make it fun at the same time.

How it's looking so far

Me and my team have been working on this for a little while, so we decided we wanted to share our progress and and see what people think

I'm using PICO-8 and streaming

https://www.twitch.tv/makscee

Gonna make whole game using PICO-8 and it’s 128x128 screen. Coding has never been more fun (kill me)pico8em2022-10-01/em13-01-04.png

I’m gonna be making sort of a tetris that rotates by 180 degrees every 10 seconds. It seems fun in my head and making tetrises is all I know
