Weirdo Words - Beta Is Up

Still a few clean up things to do but I wanted to get a beta of the game up before calling it a night.

Check out the entry here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/$299002

i know you'll like it

there's a lot more to do, but so far, so good. better take a look at our leader with a little cutie IMG_7141.jpg

End of first day

First day is over and I have some basic environment for the game. Tomorrow it will need to get done some tension, for those "every 10 seconds".

PS: I am really bad at graphics, so I went with this more procedural look and I am fairly happy with how it turned out. :)

Race around the track but every 10 seconds it gets harder

So initially, I didn't even plan on joining this LD. But the theme got me somewhat inspired, and I decided to try and get something in.

This is progress after about 2 hours. The programming probably goes against all the "best practices" in the book. Collision is evaluated by what color of pixels is in the middle of the car (hence the little hole in the middle), the road can only be 1 color as everything else is considered a wall (except for the finish line). No version control because I like to live dangerously.

I have to say that hacking together something that works without caring much about the details is so refreshing, after doing projects in my actual job with QA watching my every step, and everything having to be just perfect.

So, what do you think?

I don't feel like pouring too much effort into this, but I guess I want to make it into something that will be at least barely fun to play.

WIP Inventory

Time to get this inventory working now Capture.PNG

Level Design time?

All the mechanics are working...time to actually make a game...and get off of this test level.

Loads of Planning (Probably Overkill)

First game jam for me!

I decided at the last minute to participate (the last minute being 6:15 yesterday evening) and started brainstorming ideas with my partner.

His first idea was an escape room-type game where something changed every 10 seconds. I wasn't hooked on the escape room idea and he thought such frequent change would be too confusing/chaotic. I kept thinking about the escape part of the idea, though, and got the idea for an island with rising water levels, where the player needs to find a way to escape before the island is completely submerged. So Island Escape (super creative name, I know) was born!

You are trapped on a flooding island, with waters rising every ten seconds, and you must find enough parts to build a boat in order to escape the island before it is completely submerged.

I spent the rest of Friday evening fleshing out the idea (with my partner's help, he knows more about boats than me) and went to bed satisfied that I had a solid and more importantly achievable gameplan. I have a lot of trouble keeping my ideas small and contained and resisting scope creep, but this was promising.

I also got a little pixel art character sprite animated. CharacterWalk.gif

I then failed miserably at falling asleep and spent probably 4-5 more hours building out a semi-detailed roadmap in Notion (great tool, btw.)

IslandEscapeRoadmap.png Part of the roadmap with my current progress

I finally got some sleep before waking up and doing more planning (like I said, probably overkill) before diving in to making the game itself! There's not much gameplay yet, but I'm pretty happy with my progress and my path forward!

IslandEscape24HrProgress.gif Colors are weird cause I had trouble compressing the gif enough to be able to upload.

Next up: gathering parts for building a boat!

WIP name

I'm working on a game where a clock hand does a full rotation every 10 seconds and when it touches enemies it makes them attack. You can't kill enemies directly, but you have to move them around to make them kill each other.

Calling it a day for now. I managed to get a basic gameplay loop with one enemy type.

Tomorrow I will be adding some more enemy types and interactions and polish the graphics. GIF 02-10-2022 02-39-06.gif

Could not stop....

Ok I worked on it a bit more, now its less ugly. The core idea is there ( select two tiles, see what's common)

Screen Shot 2022-10-02 at 03.47.30.png

Next : - Validate when you have selected the second - Show the history for the round - Have the selected tiles disappear from the board - Find a score that work

I have to sleep now!

Everything but levels finished!

So... this was unexpected. For the first time ever during a game jam, I've finished everything but level design by the halfway mark. I'm quite pleased with myself! The gameplay loop isn't... super interesting, but it's still pretty fun nonetheless.

Good luck to everyone, I can't wait to play all your games!

Bit of a late start but making progress

So I joined the jam about 16 hours late but I'm giving it a go. My mood was ruined last night by something so today I decided to focus on nothing but the LD Jam and I seem to be making some okay progress. The main actual gameplay loop needs implemented but I'm pretty sure I have it and the scope locked down and hopefully it'll be manageable.

I've been learning a bunch of new stuff and so far I have a grid based cursor that is positioned based on the player's position and it snaps to my tilemap! I can locate, identify and change the tilemap based on this stuff and it seems to be all working great so far! I just have the player sprites to do (this monstrosity is a made in 20 seconds placeholder), an NPC sprite or two, a set of sprites for one object and maybe another for interaction and then anything else will purely be bonus if I have time.

It's almost 3am so the gameplay loop, art and audio will need to be done tomorrow if I can manage it. I've been having a look at what everyone else has been posting too and everything looks great. Looking forward to trying everyone's games out!

Day 1 A farming game where every 10 seconds is a day

I'm working solo and always scope big but I think I'm in a good position. Really looking forward to getting more art into this and filling it with a bunch of plants. Anyway enjoy the video!
