Recent Workflow for Live Changelogs: Interesting for Notion Users!

The title and the main character of our game.

Yesterday was Day One for us, and we got so much done! Since I had an extra moment to spare, I wanted to share how I've set up our workflow for changelogs.

In Notion, I set up a task database like so: notion screen.png

And it automatically syncs with these pages:
notion screen 2.png Why are there two, you may ask? Well, the simpler answer is that one is editable, while the other is not:
notion screen 4.png notion screen 5.png This allows me to pretty it up in Prep, and Lock the second version for anyone to take a look. Using filters, sorting and properties, I can choose exactly what I want to share as well.

This workflow is easy to duplicate and integrate into any project, and I've been using it for whenever changelogs are involved. Just another way in with Notion can be used.

You can take a peek at our live changelog anytime now! Cheers!

Time for polish

It's actually a game now!

Have to that art looking better, juice up the gamefeel, and work on the balance. More coffee, please.

Behold, another horse!

No, I refuse to look up what a horse actually looks like Screenshot 2021-10-03 104227.png

Day 2

We got the final design for our main character, animations are almost ready, still needs to be colored though. Can't wait to show you our prototype, it's almost ready :D

Some character sprites

Here's the playable character and most of the enemies! I still gotta make some horses and lasagna sprites for the totally not shoehorned in stable :P

Believe it or not... I FINISHED MY GAME

The game is called Y

It is a completely text-less adventure game.

There is not a single word in the entire game. You must figure everything by yourself while reading simple symbols around you.

The story is for YOU to figure out.

"Girl in a red car" finished

I wasn't feeling well over the weekend so I set out to make something simple. It also helped I came well prepared this time around.

Girl in a red car is a short text adventure game where you, the main protagonist, were hired to do a few small maintenance chores on a house. Should be easy enough for any sane, stable human being right? Right?

Good luck to everyone else and I am looking forward to trying out your games

Day 2, fresh and taxidermied

Spent all last night making a stupid camera zoom move. Hope everyone is sleeping and eating well. Try to enjoy it.

The Beginning of Day 1, Posted at the Start of Day 2.

First up - initial setup. Whatever I make, I'm using Unity. There's some required setup I'm going to to do make parts of my life easier.

  • Post Processing Stack
    • Unity's way of doing making things pretty.
  • Default shaders
    • I don't want to be mucking about with URP, LRP or others on this timescale. Whilst shader graph would be nice, it's just not worth it.
  • Default input system
    • I know how it works. Unity recommends the Input System Package - that's a no, for now.

Next up - the idea

The first thing that comes to mind with Unstable is nuclear reactors. So we're going to do something with that.

I want to make a horror game - I think they're super interesting. I saw a reddit post about a while back about a low budget horror film called Crawl or Die a while ago. They kept their budget low by being crammed into tight tunnels.

Being stuck in a tunnel, using clunky tools to try and get your way through, sounds ace to me (in that "unpleasant but satisfying if you win" way) - also easy to make the graphics for >.>

For gameplay - I really like the Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes chunky way of interacting with the world. I also like the computer in Quadrilateral Cowboy - your permanent companion through your adventures.

You're then trying to get to and save the reactor before it goes boom.

I threw a moodboard together - thinking industrial pipework, and we'll work on making it more interesting if there's time.

The goals

  • Feel claustrophic
  • Exploring places not designed for humans - the intermediate spaces
  • Disempower the player through awkward controls
  • Make the time pressure of the reactor feel ever present.

Trenchmouth Map (section)

Sneak preview of a small section of our map for the broken lands of Trenchmouth - a type of squad based tactical adventure set in an (unstable - Wahey!) wartorn and alternate future version of WW1.

Broken robots and machines scavenge resources across the skeleton of a dead landscape, this is the greatest of Great Wars, the fight to end all fights. Untitled-1.png

First day recap

After the last Ludum Dare, we figured it would be better to keep it short this time, and actually finish a game instead of wanting to implement everything. In this spirit, we started late. Brainstorming was chaotic as usual, and we ended up interpreting the topic a little bit... abstractly:

whiteboard.png

With our small scope we managed to make some progress in the first day, implementing (almost) all core gameplay features, art and music.

What is left now for the second day (our last day) is bugfixing, soundeffects and more visual effects. But most importantly, we have to work on finetuning and balancing the gameplay, which lacks a bit of motivation at the moment.

2 DAYS TO GO

c'mon lads, every game will be the best game : D starwars.PNG

Extremely late start

Well, still have day and something left. Still don't have idea but decided to start anyway. I decided to go for DOS - CGA style.

So, what is done?

Aaand don't worry! If you don't like this palette, i got you covered! You can choose from SIX ugly colours! 10ZJQ5IcDs (1).gif

Well, now? Probably story time... But who knows :D
