Got basic level, Keyboard/mouse control, basic entity system. I’m on a roll.
I think i forgot to say I’m in!
So Yeah

It was asymmetrical multiplayer – Mole People vs. Oil Tycoons. Mole people need oil to grow mushrooms, Tycoons need it for $. Dig down for bigger pools of oil, or send your minions after the other guys?
Problems:
not gonna be fun to test solo
double the testing + assets to do, and the key here would be visually distinct factions. I can cobble a few pixels together, but this would be better for a dedicated artist.
asymmetrical = nightmare for balancing. Also, fun gameplay would only emerge after a significantly high level of completion.
New idea is single-player, arcade-y, and relies simple geometric shapes + no living things to animate. Stay tuned… Maybe I’ll abandon this one too?
Well I was planning on NOT doing Ludum Dare, because I’m in an orchestra which has a concert this weekend, so a bunch of time will be spent on dress rehearsal + concert… but I saw the theme and I can’t resist. So I MIGHT do a really small game for the compo. Probably in HTML/Javascript. But in any case, since I don’t feel the pressure to get moving and keep on schedule, I’m going to take some time to do some in-depth theme brainstorming, even if I don’t end up making a game!
Here are some quick thoughts off the top of my head. By the way, I don’t mind if anyone uses this for inspiration!
Beneath the surface
Beneath A surface
Beneath which surface?
Beneath the surface of… what?
Beneath multiple surfaces. Many layers deep.
Beneath surface #1.
Beneath surface #42.
Who is beneath the surface?
What is beneath the surface?
Are we GOING beneath the surface?
Are we COMING FROM beneath the surface?
Are we trapped beneath the surface?
Are we avoiding the surface? Because of what’s beneath it?
Or maybe we are irresistably drawn to the area beneath the surface?
Beneath the SURF!
Surfaces are boundaries, of course. Are we allowed to go beneath the surface?
Can we puncture the surface? Or smash it? Or… smudge chocolate on it?
What does the stuff above the surface look like, for entities who are beneath it? (I’ve heard that precipitation sounds extremely noisy to fishes underwater. But I can’t remember where I heard that. Don’t quote me.)
Why do I keep thinking of the ocean surface? You can go beneath the surface of the earth on dry ground.
Can you go “beneath the surface” in outer space???
Do you have to have a gravitational field in order to go “beneath” something?
And why do I keep thinking of a geographical surface? People can have emotions and stuff beneath the surface.
OK that’s all for now.
This is my announcement post, I’ll be using:
This is going to be a fun weekend full of no sleep and tons of stress, good luck to everyone.
Here’s my concept drawing for my first Ludum Dare game. Basically you rotate the play area and then when ready, dig down to collect items or just to see how far you can get through the puzzle. There are solid rocks that you cannot dig through, and if you dig directly underneath one it falls on your head and it’s game over. Goal is going to either be based on what level you get to underneath the surface or based on points you collect (if I do decide to add collectibles).

I’m not an artist, but here is my first concept work on my game for LD
It’s a card game about journeying through a monster-infested tunnel system. You’ll buy supplies and characters to help defeat the obstacles in your path.
More details as we come up with them.
Alright got all my ideas down and things are ready to start production.
Going to grab a good night’s sleep and wake up bright and early READY TO GO!
Goodnight!

Okaaaaay, so here we go. Having skipped the December Ludum Dare, the last time I took part was in August (I really quite liked my entry for that, go check it out).
As with last LD, I’ll be working in Ren’Py. I’m teaming up with my best friend Aryn, who’ll be handling the art (his blog’s here), and I’ll be your resident wordsmith and kinda-sorta coder.
This is also the first time I’m doing an art jam in person rather than over the internet. I got way too excited and dragged out every art book I have and set up a sleeping zone deep with blankets and pillows.
Since we’re in the UK, we powernapped leading up to 2am, when the theme went live. Immediately the whiteboard came out, and STRATEGIES MANIFESTED.
My handwriting is terrible.
Eventually we came up with the following:
Right now we’re doing all the sensible preliminary steps. Off the cuff sketches, planning out what bits of code we might need, brewing cups of tea. A playlist of thematically appropriate music has been made.
It’s happening, people.
Interpreting “beneath the surface” as “secrets” and “hidden in plain sight” gave me the idea for a game about email. No, wait, bear with me. This might actually be something.
As an investigator with a shady branch that does not officially exist, you receive a hot tip from your best informant about something going down. Someone named Paul and someone named Sue are conspiring to dump their household garbage in the lake, to avoid paying for extra trash pickup! You don’t know who they are or where they work, and you don’t know when they’re going to do it, but you had better figure it out before it happens or the city will undoubtedly be sued by the local environmental protection advocacy group. This is serious business. It’s time to tap some corporate networks and intercept some email. The clock is ticking. Will you identify the conspirators and collect all the information you need in time to make your accusation stick and save the city budget?
The game will absolutely not be called “Where in the web is Carmen Sandiego?”
It seems the April LD is the web game LD for me. No base code (ignore my “I’m in”) this time, just AngularJS and wracking my brain to remember how to use it.
I like the theme ! Beneath the Surface is not too obviously mechanic oriented, and I hope it’ll allow more original stuff to be created.
I aim to find an interesting aesthetic to fit my idea, and some meaning to what will happen in the game.
Of course, shapes, colors and motion !
I’m streaming here : http://www.twitch.tv/titoulion
I’m so in I can’t even see you guys.
Tools:
* Processing or Phaser, not sure.
* Pixelmator and Paint.net
* sfxr
* Audacity
Good luck everyone!
I’m in; this is gonna be ridiculous. Not even bothering with a tool list at the moment, since my plan is to use everything available, but the most important one will probably be Unity. At the moment I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to make a soundtrack within the compo rules. Might be a whole lot of whistling, humming and clapping. This could get weird. Actually, scratch that—this will be weird.

Here’s my Git repo. It contains a bunch of framework code and a “game” that just bounces the words “DVD Video” off the sides of the screen.
I haven’t started yet, so this is still ok, right? I still have no idea what I’m doing with this theme.
Good luck to everybody.
I imagine for the theme of “Beneath the Surface” that I will work with the context of “Beneath the surface of the atmosphere [of earth]”. I initially said this mockingly on IRC as one of my joke ideas if the theme “Beneath the surface” was picked.
The set up for theme is that you are a stealth jet fighting cool shit in the upper atmosphere of the earth, but beneath the [surface of space] [1].
[1] Subject to revision
So the theme is: Beneath the Surface…
After a short deliberation I decided to write a game with action under the water.
The next thought was submarine… which need to collect oxygen and avoid stones to finally escape from the surface.
I’m attaching a simple sketch
This is my announcement and it is my first Ludum Dare. I’m scrambling to brainstorm a concept right now so I hope it comes soon! Good luck everyone!
