LD19 December 17–20, 2010

First LD

My first LD and I’m excited to get started :) Already got some ideas for an RPG buzzing round, but not sure yet…

Probably using Java. If I screw up, GameMaker 8. Graphics in Paint. Woo.

I’m in

Greetings ludatics,

I’ll be making a game this weekend, probably using Flixel/FlashDevelop this time.

My past games: www.originowl.com

Ciao!

The irc is full of assholes

And I’m entering contest.

Going to make an awesome game.

No basecode (yet).

Are you reading the handbook on how to lose respect or something like that?

HTML5 engine source

Here’s my engine source that I’m going to be starting from for the competition. It’s a very bare bones HTML5 canvas engine with an image pre-loader, debug output, primitive animation and button support, with hooks for input. It also contains some double buffering experiments, which mostly seem to be dead ends, but we’ll see what happens. It runs under firefox and chrome. Haven’t tested anything else. It represents about 3 days of work, so don’t expect much 😛

Double buffering is unnecessary on canvas as it doesn’t (well, shouldn’t) suffer from tearing or flickering, because the canvas is not updated while code is running. You’ll only suffer flickering if you clear, stop, then draw, so do both at once instead

I am “expecting much” from you! Sorry I just can’t help it. Very interested to see what you can do with HTML 5

I bow to peer pressure

… and finally decide to write my own post here, as everybody and his sister also writes a short message on the fact that he or she is participating.

My first ludum dare. Tools? Well just simple Scite as the editor, using C++ with SDL. Gimp and Inkscape for graphics. As I am pretty new to game development, I don’t think to manage music and sounds yet. So I focus on proper game mechanics and a fun experience.

I will use some of my older codes as reference, but nothing too spectacular. All derived from Lazyfoos tutorials.

I am in

Hello everyone :)

it’s my 1st time and I will be using:

Graphics: Photoshop

Programming: Processing & Java

I have no Idea how to make game music or sound effects so I am going to stick with trying to make the game-play as fun as possible

A first LD for me too, good luck =)

My game will be?

I don’t know yet 😀

Waiting for theme is something exciting and sharing experience around here is interesting too 😀

From my point of view, my “office” will be computer room and my first LD will be something really easy: not 48-hour programming rush, but from past contests experiences I learned that:

1) think is most important stuff for anything, even for programming. Write stuff on paper, play with it, even build a little prototype with pieces of paper and try to understand base mechanics. I will not do same mistake again: first analysis, then programming!

2)  try to organize my thoughts in a Game Design Canvas could be a waste of time, but could also help when I’ll move to programming phase. I don’t know yet

3) don’t waste time on graphics: I’m a programmer, so my graphics will sucks, but is only 1 on 8 judging point ! Same point on audio 😀 Will my game have audio? Naah..

4) what will be my central point on this LD? Innovation/fun/theme/graphics/audio/humor ? I don’t know. And maybe is not right point. What I need is some good base mechanics and some feel of progression and more important.. a game working in only 48 hours 😀 So I need to use my time, not waste it!

5) if a mechanics is too difficult to think/use/program, I will not use it, I promise!

I’m ready? Not yet 😀 Tomorrow!

“Content generators” and music

GreaseMonkey’s cool tool came along at just the right time. I have no aptitude for music at all, and his tool makes really nice (although largely similar) tracks. I’m wondering what else is out there for generating some for me, some kind of “SFXR for music”.  Does anyone know of other tools that let me be equally lazy and just hit a button until it makes a song I like?

I don’t mean:

  • Chuck
  • Supercollider
  • CSound

They all seem interesting and after the compo I’ll spend time getting better acquainted with them, but they’re languages, for writing music with formulas + logic. I’m looking for some generators with an SFXR-like level of ease, even if the tracks they make are downright terrible!

It’s doable!

This was probably about 10 minutes in:

[19:02:25] <GreaseMonkey> ok i’m just messing around with z80 assembler and meka
[19:02:35] <GreaseMonkey> (meka is a sega master system emulator)
[19:02:42] <Sparky> Oh, neat.
[19:02:46] <GreaseMonkey> it’s actually quite easy to load registers, palette and tiles

And now I’ve done my practice game at about 22:32. That took, ooh, 3 and a half hours to make a little not quite completeable one-level game?

Download here.

EDIT: Source code.

Believe it or not, it’s actually quite easy to make something that fits in 4KB when you’re coding in assembler.

Declaring basecode for LD19

Alright, now that I have some time to finish this up, I am declaring what I will be using, and sharing my basecode. Actually, baselibrary.

I’ll continue to develop in Actionscript3, using the Flex compiler. My IDE will remain FlashDevelop, as I am quite happy with it since I discovered the FlxDebug plugin. My graphics library will be Flixel.

Graphics will be drawn in Photoshop, or InkScape if I end up doing vector art.

Sound? I am not sure yet. SFXR is always there if I end up being lazy, but I might try something different this time.

Basecode? Some. It’s a hodge-podge of miscellaneous stuff, mostly for Flixel. For example, a simple class for drawing status bars, and another for creating scrolling text displays. The kind of crap I end up duplicating over and over, so I just stuck most of it into a separate library.

I’ve been working on a Tiled loader for Flixel. It’s pretty much feature complete*. The nice thing about Tiled levels is that they are more than just tilemaps, but can contain any amount of meta-data in so-called “object layers.” It’s decent if you’re into 2D tilemaps.

Anyway, here is the library as-is: gwslib Note that I use the fast SHA1 available here.

I wrote some Astar pathfinder stuff to go along with that, but it’s a bit broken at the moment. I will try to get it working before tomorrow afternoon.

*As long as you use the QT version of Tiled, and don’t use isometric tiles. :)

Explosive Love Updated and me almost participating in LD19

Explosive Love

Explosive Love

I just updated the Iphone version of my LD18 game Explosive Love (aka Robots <3 Monster). It crashed on some devices that didn’t have Apple Game Center, but it’s fixed! If you have an iphone feel free to rate the new version at:  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/explosive-love/id405025826?mt=8

I’ll enter LD19, but unfortunately I have christmas parties friday and saturday, but I’ll use whatever time I can find.

I’m probably going to use Unity, but depends on the topic. How do people feel about board games?

Unfortunately I don’t have any apple devices so I can’t play your game, but I wish you luck with it, Robots <3 Monster was one of the ones I rated highest at the last event.

“How do people feel about board games?”

Victory will be mine!

Victory over my own inability to complete a Ludum Dare entry that is..
I intend to use Flash, possibly Flixel depending on the idea I come up with for the theme.
Other tools may or may not include Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, Blender 3d.

Do it, do it! =)

LD19. oh, Hai!

This is my first LD, I’m pumped!  Weapon of choice will probably be unity pro with some backup from blender, zbrush and photoshop.  Hell, I might even manage to squeeze in some node.js and php.  No basecode to declare but I might use the EZGUI unity middleware for convenience.

hoohoo, I just installed lsdj on my psp so will be making everyone suffer with my newb chipbeats!

zbrush really? and chipbeats – wowza

I’m In.

The Ludum Dare is serious business for serious folks.  See my face?  This is the face of someone who is serious about completing a game for Ludum Dare 19.  I’ll also be doing a timelapse.  A serious timelapse.

Test game ready

Getting close and I wanted to make sure my pipeline was working. So, I spent an hour throwing this little “game” together. Feel free to have a play. I want to be fully prepared so I can just focus on making my LD19 entry =D

(I now know I suck at scripting in Unity – more practice needed)

Play “Nudge” on “www.TheFunkVan.com

It seems that all is working fine but if you have any problems please let me know.

I should probably throw in some google analytics code to track visits and bounces (etc) but for now can you just leave a comment if it breaks with some details on your system and browser.

Thanks =)

Update: Analytics now added. If something doesn’t work please still let me know. Thanks again =D

More recursion, really.
16. Dec 2010 · 15:17 UTC
Why are people posting things two times when it’s about redundancy?

Wouldn’t 10 or 100 times for example be redundant?
GreaseMonkey
16. Dec 2010 · 17:36 UTC
You don’t have to repeat the whole thing, just a hash / reed-solomon code of what you say. But anyways, wrt what bernardfrancois said, I’ll be using 8×8 tiles lots of times over (because you can’t *really* fill the 32×24-tile screen with the 448 tiles you have available).

My second Ludum Dare

After my disappointment with my game in Ludum Dare 18, I decided to participate of the Ludum Dare 19 to try to make a better game than the previous competition.

Here’s my tools list:

  • Programming: Game Maker 8 PRO, GML language
  • Graphics: The Gimp, Paint, Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
  • Sound: Fruity Loops, Audacity

Well, now just wait for the Show start and break all!

PS: Sorry if my english is bad.

Declaration

This is most likely going to be the jam, but I want all bases covered so:
Engine: Game Maker 7 Pro/ GML Language with a little help from Liberty Basic
Graphics: Sculptris, MSPaint, Gimp
Computer: Gateway with windows 7, and custom built XP Machine
Editor: Notepad++
Timelapse: Chronolapse
Enjoyment: Foobar music player and MIrc

LD for real this time!

So my first couple of forays into the Daring world of Ludum were met with schedule interference, allowing me 2 and 9 hours respectively to work on an entry.

Not this time! I have the weekend cleared, my computer is in working order, and I’m all set to commit an entire weekend towards whatever idea I come up with.

Tentatively, I want to do something involving sand. Maybe it’s cause it’s so dang cold out, and I’m thinking of summer.

Almost ready for my first Ludum Dare!

I’ll make making something for Ludum Dare! I’ve been meaning to for long enough so might as well get around to it.

I’ll be using Flixel to make the game, sfxr for sound effects, Chronolaspe to make a timelaspe video and coffee to get it all done in time.
