[OFFICIAL] Ludum Dare Discord (1700 MEMBERS)

I’m ieyfo, I run the Discord for Ludum Dare it was stared back for LD36 and we have grown as a community to over 1700+ members and growing more everyday. I personally love the community we have formed and I want you to become a part of it :).

The main goal of the discord is not to just chat but grow LD as an event. There are millions and millions of game developers yet so few participate in LD when it’s already huge. SO LETS MAKE IT BIGGER. We can use the server as a way to show other game devs what there missing from not participating in LD. Ludum dare is a way to connect game developers and the discord will expedite the process. We love having everyone chat and show the process of making there games both during Ludum Dare and there personal projects.

We have a new partner in recent times, we have partnered with the folks over at minijam to help bring EVEN MORE new people to connect with the ludum dare community. They have a channel where you can get a little more info on what there doing.

Two Ludum Dares ago we were asked to partner with crowdforge.io and now there Ludum Dare area has a direct link too our discord.

All the mods and Mike himself are in there so why not join?

Why Discord and why my discord for LD?

IRC what? Its 2018 its time to progress!!

Discord is an amazing place with voice chat, video chat, screen share, all super fast and better than anything Iv’e ever used. Also discord is amazing for sharing project assets or anything you wanna no need to link images like IRC just paste them in. You’re not just a name and a string of text you are you and people can easily get to know you.

Next why to join our discord well we are the biggest 1700+ strong and growing. In a non biased opinion the most fun and organized discord with section and channels for everything you could need whether you’re doing Ludum Dare or game development or programming in general we got you!

We hope to see you there V INVITE LINK https://discord.gg/9DrcQmg

ludum dare suggestions 43.PNG

I'm in for LD 43!

I'm looking forward to participating in this one and will be using Unity. Here are my suggestions:

Screenshot 2018-11-15 21.49.59.png

I'll try to be in!

This would be my first LD, I'm hoping I'll be able to make it, and that I will be able to finish the game in the allotted time. I'll be using LibGDX (Java) for desktop, and a couple of publicly available libraries I've been working on. In addition - Gimp for creating some basic graphics (I'm really bad at it), but I hope to do some shader magic to improve the look of the game.

My suggestions: - Player in a flux - Big guns! - Travel the world

LDjam 43 Theme Suggestions

Hey all,

I think it's great that the last 6 themes are shown to give an idea of what has been done. Nevertheless, I tried to go into a different direction, so my three theme suggestions are as follows:

Research

Friendship

Union

For each of those I can think of several different games, genres, interpretations, and approaches, which is why I believe those are solid candidates. On the flipside, the terms themselves are a bit nebulous, so I was half tempted to scratch all that and suggest "fog" instead.

As for the previous themes, four of those ("one room", "running out of space", "running out of power", "a small world") can be summed up with "limited resources." Another one, "The more you have, the worse it is" consitutes the opposite, where an abundance of resources becomes a problem.

Out of the six suggestions, the only theme that is not resource focused is "combine 2 incompatible genres" which takes the reliable method of combining and remixing to foster creativity, but adds the twist of combining seemingly incompatible genres. It is reminiscent of the strange attractors concept that Brandon Sanderson talks about on the writing excuses podcast. This non-resource based theme fascinated me the most. I can't quite live up to that, but hopefully my own theme suggestions are of use to some people.

All the best,

Kai

What is the point of this rule?

Since last LD, something bothered me... Now there is a rule that says that if you join the Jam and use premade assets, you can't apply to be voted in graphics.

What is the point?

Someone told me that this is to be fair to who made everything from scratch. But is this fair to who made everything ALONE and are competing with 10-20 people in a single team doing the game game?

I always understood that if I want to go hardcore and really test my skills to do everything from scratch, I've to go to Compo and Jam exists to allow me to just have fun... But now I don't think so.

Allow premade assets is fair with everyone. Because everyone could use premade or downloaded assets. And what if you want to do everything from scratch? So you go Compo... no?

I'm a LD veteran: LD32 (First attempt, I didn't finished), LD35, LD38, LD39, LD40, LD41, LD42 and now going to LD43. But for the first time I'm really sad to participate because of this. Most of my games I made everything from scratch, but because I really like to try and practice. I don't se why this rule was added to force us to do this.

And another thing: If you really believe that more time working on graphics (premade assets = time) means better graphics, I think you need to play more LD winner games. Most of them, that wins in graphcs, is very simple and doable in 2-3 days or less (actually less). So have premade assets don't put no one in advantage (if it does, so team projects should be banned from Jam as well... wich I don't think is good). If you're a good artist, you'll create good graphics no matter how.

So that's my point... I really want to see this rule going out to keep us free to be happy in Jam and, if we want to do from scratch... ok, go to Compo.

First time joining a Game Jam

This will be the first time I'll be joining a Game Jam and I am looking forward to it! =)

Here are my theme suggestions:

  • Phobia
  • Weather
  • Time

Theme suggestions

Every theme has its own interestingness. I'm probably in the minority of people who likes the last theme "Running out of space". I look forward to see themes that do not limit games to a specific genre, and I absolutely hate themes that do not have a lot of interpretations - who wants to play a bunch of re-skinned versions of the same game?

  • Hard to focus
  • Say YES
  • Reset to win

Greetings

Hey everyone, looks like I'm in this one. I don't have a lot of experience or a plan, but I think this will be a good learning experience that will help me attain my goal of career game development. I'll be using Unity 3D, and this will be my first serious game that I'll be able to commit time to, so I don't expect amazing results, but they're certainly welcome.

Here are my theme suggestions, which I'll admit are kind of derivative of others:

Limited Resources Decisions have meaning You are the world

GL HF!

Another one of those boring "I'm in" posts...

...but I don't care! 😀

Themes:

-A game in a game -Retro comeback -Pure Game Action

Tools:

-GameMaker Studio 2 -MuseScore 2 -Audacity -Paint.NET

Other thoughts:

-Time to focus on actually managing my time and not wasting half my time on playing video games! -Time to actually make a bug-free game!

That's all! GL and HF! 😃

PS How do you make new lines start??? All of the different themes are in edit mdoe in different lines but in view mode are all in the same line! Explanation???

Trying to "I'm in" for LD 43

Charmed to be here for my first time! I have known ludum dare for two years and this year I want to try to release myself participating :)

The tools that I'm going to use are,

  • LibgGDX
  • Piskel
  • Texture packer
  • 2D Particle Editor
  • Beepbox & Audacity (For music)
  • Hiero (for fonts)

and my theme proposals,

  • Nigthly space
  • Darkness
  • Chaos

Best luck!

I'm in for my first Ludum Dare

Second game jam, first Ludum Dare.

I participated in the 4th Alakajam! last month and got 3rd place in Theme, 9th in Gameplay, and 16th Overall. Not bad for a first try!

Gave me enough confidence to try out a Ludum Dare. I know I will have much higher level of competition, but I will also have more time for the jam (only had 5 hours free for Alakajam!). Hope I can do something good.

I will participate in the Compo using Unity (Visual Studio), Piskel, Bosca Ceoil, and Bfxr.

Oh, and here are my theme suggestions! LD43_Suggestions.png

Wallpaper, dark edition!

Same deal as yesterday's, just on a dark background. Click it for 4K version.

I'm In

I'm in for Ludum Dare 43, hopefully school doesn't screw me over. Will probably make a game in pure JavaScript from scratch like I usually do Although I might use the js engine I've been slowly building up.

One last time

I'm in, for what I anticipate will be my last Ludum Dare.

We're in!

This will be my second LDJam. My first was #42. I'm teaming up with a composer and foley artist for our second project together. My votes for the theme are:

  • Catching Fire
  • Fire Is Spreading
  • Robots

I know, I like fire. :)

I will be using

  • Unity
  • Photoshop
  • Visual Studio 2017
  • and whatever else I need.

I'm in!!!!

My last LDJAM was #LD40, I unfortunately had to miss #41 and #42 but now I am free so I am entering in Ludum Dare #43. Hopefully, I can continue with the next Ludum Dare's aswell.
