Main character design

Hi! French videogame students here (1 developer, 2 designers). This is our 2nd Ludum Dare - at least for 2 of us. We're very happy to participate again! Here's a little work in progress. Good luck to everyone ;) @jibbs and @leandre-renouard

Mary had a sacrificial lamb

You are Mary, the God of Thunder, and you must frighten your little sheep away from the Big Bad Wolf with bolts of lightning. Beware, zap too close and you might zap one of your little darling lambs! Some might have to be sacrificed for the good of the many!

END OF THE FIRST DAY - Soundtrack

Thought I'd end the evening coming up with a quick spacey ambient soundtrack.

Having done all sound in the past using bfxr, it's an amazing experience to be doing all sound (and sound effects!) on a proper hardware synthesizer.

Before sleep, we can throw a pig!

Update before going to sleep... We can take a pig, jump with it and even throw it away! Tomorrow will be a big day for this pig... very big day... very last!

"As Of Yet Unnamed" | Day #1 Progress

Day #1 began, as always, about 7 or 8 hours after the theme was announced. 3:00 am is no time to start jamming in polite society, I do declare. We all got on discord and into a shared Google doc, and brainstorming began. After a little while, we had an idea: a narrative-driven social commentary. It seemed pretty ambitious. We tried to figure out the distilled version, the minimum requirements for it to work. Nope. Not a chance in three days. So we went for a wacky arcade game where your bodyguards must jump in the line of fire and protect the president!

Day1_t.png

Yes, this is a working title.

Day1_a.png

Don't worry, if you're not excited about either protecting or failing to protect the tangerine marvel you see in this screenshot, I will in all likely hood pixel together an Obama tomorrow. We'll aim to be inclusive.

The Art So Far

I began with some quick sprite work for the bodyguards, limousine and the president. I put together a temporary four frame walk animation for the bodyguard, and then we decided it's more important right now to have a world for this all to take place in. So all in all, most my time was spent on background assets. I created seven buildings while using Google Streetview in the middle of Manhattan as inspiration. And I threw up some posters of our previous LD entries, as per my own tradition.

Got Game?

We got game! @daanvanyperen has been slaving away at whatever demonic rituals you need in order to write code. (I won't claim to understand any of it.) Right now we have a very basic and unpolished game. We have a president to protect and a bunch of bodyguards. We have laser sighting indicating when and from where a bullet will come, and a time-slow mechanic combined with a draw-back catapult system for launching your bodyguards in the right direction. All of this still needs a good amount of work to get right, of course.

Other than that, @meatmachine has made three songs for our soundtrack. Hopefully we can start implementing some sound effects tomorrow.

Tomorrow's Plans

Like I stated above, I plan to add Obama as a choice for president. This is meant to be a silly game, not a divisive one. Other than that I hope to do a lot of character animation. We'd like to have spectators by the side of the road, waving at the parade. I think I am good on buildings for now; more is always better for variety's sake, but there are other priorities.

For now, I will finish my Day #1 Reward Beer, an imperial porter named Je Moer In De Band brewed by De Moersleutel, and then go to bed. Goodnight!

Day 1 Progress

Not sure if playing as a Minotaur murdering childre- I mean sacrifices... Is a good idea but it's apparently where my day has lead me. Now sleep time.

Day 1: Progress So Far

I got the general movement system working with a dialogue handler and combat system with combos. I used Adobe Fuse to generate the characters and some assets from the Unity asset store, such as swords; so far.

The Necessary Sacrifices for Success

Listening to some music while making game.

imageem2018-12-02/em04-22-31.png

I want game to be good game. I sacrifice sheep. Game is good now.

Half time closing in, and I am very happy with my progress

Already doing polish things such as level transitions, while having just 1 level designed. Got my priorities right! Anyway, I got the game working, and like the visuals already. I am glad I added the animation, it was much easier than I was worried.

Sound effects and level design (which includes tutorial, but it will be easy for this game) are the only two tasks needed to be done tomorrow. I don't think I even need menu and all that fancy stuff. Also, I am not going to ruin this with music.

I adjusted the visuals to fit the dark forest environment better. I am starting to like pixel art, it is very satisfying and you can get decent results with moderate effort if you are not experienced.

Goal of each level is to get all the glowing orbs. Getting each orb makes you sacrifice a specific special ability you have.

This is my Half Time Progress:

ld432.PNG LD433.PNG

This is my halftime progress for LD43. My game is about leading villagers or "Followers" up a mountain due to a rapid flood caused by climate change. On the way up, there are many challenges, you encounter wolves, bandits, blocked paths, etc. To overcome these, you have to sacrifice important resources to you. For example equipment, health, food or even people.

An example of this is the wolf encounter, where you have the option to sacrifice a person for the wolves to eat, food, or fight them (where you could lose health)

Yes I am trying to make this in 48 hours. I'm pretty bad at managing my time...
