Compo #2 submitted!

I just submitted my second ever Compo entry: Mountaintop Groovy Robot Laser Battle.

What's different:

Animation scope

Last Ludum Dare, I didn't have a good idea of how much time animation would take. This time around, I made a very basic script, then worked on assets almost exclusively. After I had most of the animations and art I needed, I went back to making the game. This seemed to work better.

FistmanTopAttackPrep.png

Sleep

I got some this time. It may have been exclusively during daylight hours, but hey, I might not be totally dead next week.

What's the same:

Focus on a visuals

Both events, I focused on making a simple, clean game rather than one with elaborate gameplay and few visual elements.

Pygame sucks

I meant to become familiar with an engine like Unity over the last four months, but it never happened. Oh well. It was just as difficult to get an executable working this time around, but it took hours instead of days.

I done good

I'm rather proud of my submissions for both of these competitions, simple as they may be.

Flappy Jet! Arcade Flight Simulator

Try my entry for this ludum dare compo! Pretty fun i think, simple arcade game with a slightly interesting mechanic haha.

Question

How do you give ratings to other people's work?

Submitted and ready to play!

Oh man, what a blast!

This has been my first game jam, and I can say for sure that it won't be my last one.

I submitted this game "Oh no! Democracy!": https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/oh-no-democracy-1

Skjermbilde 2017-07-31 kl. 03.12.49.png

It is made in a custom JavaScript engine. To be fair I think I did just as much development on the engine it self as I did on the game... Anyways, I think the game turned out OK, even if I would have wanted a few more animations, effects, any sounds at all, and a bit more balancing.

I hope you guys find it somewhat interesting :)

See you in your game's comment section!

Finally online...

Well, game's done I would say :)

4th Ludum Dare in a row! Try Field Defense

This is my 4th Ludum Dare submission, which is a survival sandbox wave game. No audio unfortunately, due to crashes after exporting the .jar file. But still, try it out here:

Game Complete

After a few final touches, a last-minute soundtrack and minor patches, my game, High Rise, is fully complete! It took a while, but I'm very happy with the result.High Rise Screenshot.png

I had loads of fun with this game :D Good luck to all jammers! warlock11.gif

Skelly Zone is Done!

:skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull:

I finished my game!

I feel like I got pretty close to what I wanted, a semi-base building action-ish, slightly Devil Daggers, slightly tower defense kind of vibe. I was able to get raw versions of all the systems in that I wanted to. There's a lot of balance stuff and economy stuff that needs to happen to make it a 'good game' but I feel like the idea is there and it's reasonable fun to run around in and build turrets and shoot stuff. I am also pretty happy with the simple visuals I made, they're not polished but they set the mood I wanted.

I'll probably write a longer post-mortem type post later but all in all I'm pretty happy! Most importantly I shipped 2 hours before the 48 hour mark and it basically works and is a game :sunglasses:

Can't wait to play your games!

Done with SpaceReturn

I'm a little surprised I actually managed to put together a game for my first compo. It has a lot of problems, mainly that it's too easy and gets repetitive quickly, but I can't do anything about it now, so instead I'll just be happy I did it :D

Anyone else having trouble with submissions?

I am trying to submit my game, but when I preview the submission, it doesn't include my cover image, or my source code link. Help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Finished!

Phew, first ever game jam done!

And my first complete game ever too.

Check it out if you feel like it here!

Well, maybe not “complete”, but playable. Levels and other features are not yet complete, but the core gameplay is getting there.

Screenshot_3.png

I must say, what an experience though. Really pushed me to work harder than I'm used to. I also overestimated myself and how much time I had, which lead me to having a game incomplete in terms of content, but it was a good lesson for next time.

Game was made with Godot engine alongside with Aseprite, ChipTones, as well as fakemusicgeneretor.com.

If you have any comments or want me to complete it please let me know.

Yay I'm done too

this is my first LD, I'm proud of myself and am so excited to play everyone's games!! I wish everyone luck and I will get to rating them... Right after a nap.

I've gotta show off my product :P (it's about a confusing court case).

Well, it's not FULLY finished... more mechanics I wanted to explore, more ideas, and more levels. But it's pretty playable for the time I had available, and I'm really happy with it!

So done....

MetalBehemoth_icon.png

It has been a rough 48 hours, especially the last 8.
Even though I originally scoped the project pretty well, the issues with Blender and Unity made me lose many hours, add to that several more hours lost because I had no idea what to do about gameplay, and in the end I got myself a collectathon. Still, both visually and mechanically is the biggest game I've made during LudumDare so far, so I'm happy.

All Done!

For my first compo entry, I think it came out nice. Completely different game than I had intended to make but it's still fun. Probably a little too easy though.

I had a ton of fun with this theme! Great experience for my first Ludum Dare and I'm really pleased with my game. It's about escaping mazes before running out of light. Also there's lasers that you can only see in the dark. Check it out: https://schu-box.itch.io/lost-in-the-dark

Game Update #3 - Stuff is Working!

Stuff is finally starting to work now! In fact this is technically a game now. You get score, you have a general goal, and things function. That said, there is no end game or "pretty" things going on.

To do must haves: Bonus drops from destroyed enemies (such as shield recharge) Indicators that show how much power you have, score, etc...

Nice to haves: Special weapon(s) so that you can kill stuff faster (and be more interesting) Animations for destroyed objects Sound/Music

A lot to do with only a few hours tomorrow to probably work on it. But alas I'm exhausted. If I had to, I could submit it now and generally happy that I finished something. In any case, here is a GIF:

LD39_Clip2.gif

First Compo entry, second LD - 2Dark4Me

This is my second Ludum Dare submission, and my first Compo. It was tough, but I did it! Although there were some difficulties (as always) I'm mostly happy with the result. Sadly, the WebGL version has some bugs with the lighting which made it nearly unplayable so I'm not publishing it. But the rest should be working fine, I think.

2Dark4Me is a platformer where you must collect batteries to power the lights temporarily. If the lights go out, it's game over. The batteries are sparsely scattered around the level, so you should try to pick up every one you find, and there are some traps and obstacles around to keep you busy. Good luck!

First Ludum Dare Finished!

Hey guys, I just made it in time. Sadly i didn't have enough time this weeking to add some sounds to my game.

I present to you my first game for Ludum Dare 39... PowerPath

PowerPath is a fast memorize game, where you need memorize a path and then refollow it.

I'll go to bed now, so i can test your games when I am awake again. Happy Testing everyone.

Rise Shine Fall: an Early Prototype

Снимок экрана (9).png

By now our game — we are going to call it 'Rise Shine Fall' — is not finished, but we already have this nice landscape and the core mechanics.

At first, we did not like the theme, but, surprisingly, it worked out well: the key was to understand power metaphorically. So there is no electricity at all, just good old shamanic techniques!

Team: ijona, Supr.

Electron - My first Game Jam

It's also my first game after a long hiatus (the last game I made was in Flash in 2012!) so really, just submitting something playable was quite an accomplishment.
Anyway, here's my entry

Great Job Everyone!

Just wanted to say if you finished, and even if you didnt, Great job everyone in Compo! im always amazed at how truly amazing the games are in this competition, regardless of polish.

Good Luck Jammers! 21 Hours left!

Check out my game and please give feedback and rate!

My game is named Potato Boy in: Power Crisis. It is a point-and-click game. It is a little short but it is worth a try. I would be very happy if you gave some feedback! Thanks, and have a fantastic day! (Here's a screenshot)Capture3.PNG

Am finished

Well. This Ludum Dare was scheduled at exactly the wrong time - I was on vacation the week before (with no wifi, so I couldn't vote on themes) and I was flying on a plane on Saturday and didn't really get time to work.

So I decided to go the lazy way and use Unity and make a 3D game, which worked out pretty well.

By my best estimates, the total amount of time I spent on my game is under 12 hours (~3 hours on Friday, and ~8 hours today) so I wasn't really expecting to make anything great.

My "finished" product is a technically usable tower defense game. It is notably my first 3D Ludum Dare game, as well as my first one since Ludum Dare 33 to not have music. (Or any sound, for that matter).

Here's a screenshot that sort of gives some idea of what's going on: ld-screenshot.png So. It's okay. I hope next time goes better.

Finished Power Ring Facility!

poweremring/emfacility_cover.png

I ended up starting pretty late, but for about 11 hours worth of work, I'm pretty happy with the final result. It's also my first time finishing something with the Godot engine and it was a blast to use :)

Here's Power Ring Facility, a difficult platformer with gameplay inspired by Dustforce and aesthetics inspired by Portal:

Lollipop Invisible Suit Scene FINALLY COMPLETE!

I've been working on this scene for a LOT of hours! Happy to say it is finally done! The good thing is that this may be the funniest scene so far!

Here is a little sneak peack! Screenshotem180.png Also, just for the record, my eyes only see numbers now. Numbers, numbers, talking candy and numbers... (I think I'm going crazy here!)

Here is the reason why my eyes only see numbers now Screenshot_181.png Yea, and that is for all lines between 2 and 384! The rest 100 or so lines are just the transitions, but almost 400 lines, are just the text!

(here is one line of text incode: "scrtext(128,4,1,"Cherry!",-1,0,-1,0,-1,0,4,4,cyellow,corange,cwhite,font_CC);") multiply THAT by 400 and you've got a crazy programmer! And this example isn't even the longest! The longest goes on for 250 characters!

I'll take a break now...

See you when I've got the next scene done...

Sleep solves everything

Late joining the jam post. I started Saturday afternoon with an idea I liked, had to scrape my first attempt since it was going nowhere, but followed with the same idea and a different approach.

Spent all Saturday night fighting the stupid player physics and went to bed Sunday morning feeling defeated and thinking I wouldn't be able to finish. A few hours of sleep later I managed to fix the physics with just a simple solution my sleep deprived self couldn't find for hours, and then spent the rest of the Sunday actually working on the game.

Here are a couple of screenshots: Captura de pantalla de 2017-07-31 05-59-30.png Captura de pantalla de 2017-07-31 05-59-55.png Now all I have left is adding the music, menus/tutorial, and tying some loose ends. Going to bed optimistic this time.

Second Ludum Dare Jam 2/3 over???

I can't believe that the second day of my second Ludum Dare is done. The time sure flies! This time, I decided to work with both of my sons. One can program and help with some art, the other does music, sound, and art. For both jams, we decided to do something rather complex that would definitely push our coding skills. Last time was a turn-based strategy game; this time, we went with a base building game. I got to play a fairly complete and bug free version for the first time just now, and it looks like we will be right on track for tomorrow's finish.

Here's a first peek at the Cryogenic Operating System, or CryOS!

Screenshot 2017-07-30 23.02.12.png

Screenshot 2017-07-30 23.05.02.png

Just a few tweaks and a couple of additional features (especially win/loss conditions!) and it will be finished!

Judgning is when exactly?

Just curious. As I stated in my previous posts, this was my first Compo and LD in general so I don't got the hang of things if you know what I mean :P

Who want some zombies?

Phew...

Finally, we upload the game :D

Sleep time... We do not want to make us as zombies too.

Progress report (#6)

Remember when I said can I make a procedural level generator in 4 hours? I did it! It hasn't got much content to work with, but hopefully with the rest of tonight's work and the work I do tomorrow morning I can give it enough to work with. It needs a little tweaking to make sure that levels are power balanced, but the core of it is working, which makes me VERY happy!

Also managed to add a tad more polish to the tutorial, there's still a collision bug, but don't you worry about that! (it only affects the bad guys anyway! We'll pretend it's a visually odd feature!)

12:30 at night and still going ok. I do want to wake up tomorrow though, so I'll probably go to sleep soon. Have a good sleep y'all!. Or a good day should that be the case for you. Whatever works for you!

Screen Shot 2017-07-31 at 00.33.15.png

FINISHED!

I did it, another one in the record books! I've never played Super Meteoroid but I went for a top down perspective of something similar. Did it all in pixel art and managed to get a upgrade system, coin system, wave system, power system, and full working UI and everything else I set out to achieve. I learned so much and can't wait to see the reviews to see what it is I need to work on.

Finished!

Ayup! I hit a block last LD but smooth sailing this time 'round! Feel free to check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/$34289

Day 3, Part 2

So much progress. Got a basic HUD working. Collectibles are placed and function properly, including being able to fuel your shuttle and your welder. Just about everything works.

Except one of the primary mechanics of the game: the enemy entity having interaction with doors! Something is eluding me. It just ignores the doors entirely and spreads right through them. Been working at this one for so long...

Thank goodness I'm doing LDJam and not LDCompo.

Out of Juice

I used this weekend to learn a brand new language: Lua. Just because. Using the Love2d engine, I threw together a quick little project called Out of Juice, where you play as a man attempting to recharge his phone so his girlfriend can send him some... Ahem... risque pictures.

outofjuiceitch.png Where, oh where did I leave my charger..?

All in all, it was a great learning experience! Still not really a fan of scripting languages, as I feel their open-ended nature is a detriment for my thinking style, but I had a good time nonetheless.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/out-of-juice

Feeling the theme...

Now that things are back to normal on the site, here is my submission...

TitleCard.png

This was my first ludum dare but it will not be my last. I honestly had even more fun than I was expecting! While my game may be lacking some of the features I had wanted to implement on day 1, I managed to realize my initial vision very well! I beat the hard difficulty with 1% battery life left so I think I've even got the balancing right. Overall, 10/10 would ludum dare again. I'm excited to see what everyone else managed to come up with!

http://www.shorremccolman.com/deliverydrain for anybody who wants to try it out now!

2nd Compo ! Starting to get the hang of it

So this is my second time trying the compo, the first time i made the mistake of doing a multiplayer online game ... Learned not to do that again.

I've been working daily with the Unity Engine for 3 years now (work in VR) and I love how i can still find new things to experiment with.

Mecanim

For this LD39 I mainly used the Mecanim Animator. Trying to find what could be done with less coding possible (700- lines of code). And this tool is powerfull !! You can do animation sure, but you can do all sorts of behavior/AI and it's also very intuitive.

For my game the monsters and the character are almost entirely done using Mecanim except for raycasts and audio. But the phone too. Screenshot3.png

Give it a try if you can. It does take more time to do certain things, and can get messy really fast. But at least its fun. Look at that beauty : Mecanim.png

2D Normals

I also got to play around with something that I wanted to do for a long time : 2D normal maps. For that I used a software called Sprite Illuminator, it's pretty intuitive but cost 40$. The result works quite well. And lighting is pretty important when you're doing a horror game. On the Unity part you can't use standard sprite shaders as these don't take lights into account. I think it would be smart from Unity to make 2D Lights, because trying to have 3D lights behave the way you want to in 2D is real puzzle. Normals.png

The amount of work needed to make every assets (graphics and sounds) still takes me too long, but a few other compo and I should be able to have either a faster production pipeline or the management knowledge to have appropriate scopes. Post3.gif

Finally, I had a really good time doing this Ludum Dare, so Thank you again to everybody that makes this reunion possible. If you want to see the product of the last 48h for me, go THERE

Thank you for reading, and good luck to everybody.

Summary of my 5th compo (delayed post)

I feel like its obligatory to make this post: I finished!!! (about 5 hours ago, 30 minutes before deadline)

Wait.. where are all the gifs of your game?

Now lets talk a little irony. Its been a tough Ludum Dare having no internet connection for straight two days for the most annoying reason. They ran out of power. God! the irony!

Yup, a powercut of my internet providers made me continue offline for a whole day. This is the second day so I'm typing from my phone via LTE.

It took my 3 freakin hours to upload my entry via LTE! Think about the improvements you would make with this time! So I had to give up on instructions (posted them at entry page) and options menu that really wanted to do..

But honestly, the product is way more polished than any other entry I made before. Just a shame people need to read instructions ahead and cant bind keys.

I just hope u ppl will like it. Can't gif it or things of the sort. I'd be satisfied if this even gets posted.

The game is about running out of mental powers.. but really... it's just about glowing boxes having a fight ;)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/powerless-3

Looking back on day two

Click on images to see animated GIFs, can't seem to embed them here. :pensive:

I began the day with implementing simple patrol logics. After that, shutting down the enemy robots was the plan. Coming with this, I also implemented simple win and lose conditions. Now, the game could be called real game.

Next up I wasted some time making it simpler for me to create GIFs. Actually a bad idea. Well, it worked out somehow.

Day Two 2017-07-30T15-50.png

Now I gave the graphics some love and reworked some models. Also I implemented hiding places.

Day Two 2017-07-31T00-43.png

Originally I wanted to go to sleep now, but I thought some little animations would be nice. So I did those as well, makes the game a little bit more lively.

Day Two 2017-07-31T02-16.png

Today the plan is to implement the last features. After that I have to create the music and the sounds, as well as some levels.

In this moment, I am optimistic.

Well Rested Level building!

Well, a good nights rest does wonders for the brain! Today i will just spend polishing up some minor things, and see if i can pop out an extra level, maybe two!

One day to go...

With 30+ hours of coding done over the weekend, tomorrow is just for polishing it up.

Our entry is unique, and we're looking forward to sharing it!

Electric lovers is done!

Ludum Dare 39 post mortem

I usually don't write these since people rarely read them anyway but I kinda feel like it. I decided to join compo the day Ludum Dare started so I didn't prepare whatsoever. Luckily I had an idea pretty quickly and immediately started coding.

I used Java and a custom library which saved me from writing a lot of boilerplate code.
The first day I did most of the graphics and everything went also well until the end. Then I had to solve a quite mathematical problem. I needed to find a random path of fixed length through a 2D array. I was stuck with it for quite a while and tried multiple things but in the end I figured the best solution would be a depth-first tree search and it worked, surprisingly. :scream:

On the second day I added the major gameplay elements such as a timer and a score. Pretty simple stuff. I also remembered that a game doesn't consist of only code and graphics but there is also music and sounds. Unfortunately I have no idea how to quickly compose music and I didn't want to go for the 8-bit chiptune style. So I just hacked some sounds together with the help of JFXR and it already added some mood to the game.

In the end I just polished the game up a little, fixed a bug or two and added some more visuals. The compo went surprisingly well for me and I even finished ahead of time. This was my 4th (or 5th?) LD entry and I enjoyed it a lot!

Mars 9 is done!

It was technically done yesterday (as it's a compo game) but I was too tired to make an announcement post.

Mars 9 is a game where you play as a robot who needs power to live, but shooting electrical blasts is his only form of attack, so you can't just go in shooting everything Rambo style.

Check it out! (iff you want to): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/mars-9

Ned and His Powerbars

Oh you think that's an elderly lady? NO. THAT IS THE ALMIGHTY LEVIATHAN. KILL IT BEFORE IT SPREADS.

Featuring multiple endings, you live your life the way you want! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/ned-and-his-powerbars nedDebut.gifscreenshot2.PNG

This is gonna be an all nighter, isn't it?

Well, I only have one more level to draw. Then sounds. I was hoping to also include an optional "random" mode that just randomly spams obstacles on an empty level, but we'll see if there's time.

I'm very tired of drawing backgrounds and sprites. I think this last level will mostly just use all the sprites from prior levels. Even though half of them will make no sense.

Anyway, here, have a screenshot of some random sprites.

Office wars is finished!

Hi Everyone!

Spent the weekend working on this, I think it came out okay. I'd work on it more but I have work tomorrow so this is where it ended up. :)

Made in Unity 2017 and using Photoshop. Didn't have time to add any audio though. No controller support either though I think it might be a nice addition.

Occasionally you'll find a dart in your robotic pockets.

Enjoy! Comments welcome!

Sparkling is finished!

Sparkling is a Topdown Survival Arcade game.

Using any skill, moving or being hit drains you energy. You can shoot enemies to collect energy drops, but can you really afford the energy cost? How long can you survive?

Started learning about general gamedev a few months ago. This is mey first Ludum Dare. Took me some good 15+ hours to put this together. Powered with Unity, Blender, BFXR and Photoshop. :)

The game can be played online, or downloaded for Windows, Mac or Linux
