LD 39 July 28–31, 2017

Snake out of Power

Since last LD I had the ambition to finish something that's not too bad in the next LD. Months passed, had some tough weeks and forgot to check the date for the 39th Ludum Dare. Fast Forward to this weekend. I was watching some streams on the evening, when i just saw that some guy is streaming game development for Ludum Dare...

Wooops forgot about it

I looked at the clock. Only a few hours remaining. Should I try to get anything done or go to bed?... I started my stream, worked on a small C++ project and forgot about participating. Half an hour later one of my viewers asked me if I know anything about game development and if I can give him any advice. I told him about Ludum Dare, explained how I just missed it this time... but he just said "Just give it a shot and try your best!"

I guess I made the right decision ;)

The Idea

After I discovered the topic, I had a few interesting ideas in my mind, but not enough time to finish any of these. Being a huge fan of old arcade games I just thought about implementing one of these and adding the "Out Of Power" mechanic...I choose you ~~pikachu~~ Snake! The basic idea was born. Losing power means that you screen will get dark. But how can you regain power? The idea of button mashing to produce power was floating in my mind, but somehow I just got hooked by the simple idea of pickups.

Development

The development was quite fun. As I mentioned earlier, I only had around 4-5 hours left to develop the whole game, make some art (well... not that much, but it is still art!), producing some sound effects and uploading it.

I touched C# for the first time after a couple of months. The first banana skin i discovered was declaring an two dimensinal array (just laugh about me, I feel embarrassed), but after i wrote the first cople lines of code I had no problems anymore. A short résumé what I did in each hour:

  • First Hour: getting the idea, setting up Unity and VS, doing some UI
  • Second Hour: developing the field, the movement
  • Third Hour: implementing my Out Of Power-Mechanic, spawning the batteries and snake parts
  • Fourth Hour: collision, more movement, fixing some bugs(FindGameObjectByTag is somehow not working for me in build versions), playtesting, uploading it

In the end i really enjoyed it! Even if I was not able to develop something big, I am amazed how much you can do if you just try it!

Tools I used

  • Engine: Unity
  • IDE: Visual Studio 2017
  • Art: Paint, Pyxel Edit
  • Sound: bfxr (Great for all kind of sounds...especially if you only have a few more minutes left and want to add some kind of sound)

Things I learned

  • Using a calendar to not forget about the next LD
  • Streaming the development is a great way to keep you hooked to your project, but it can distract you
  • pg.lost is a great band!
  • Just do it! You don't need all the time to get anything done ;)
  • Don't waste time... One of my viewers was reminding me to not spend time on special features

Todo

  • Polishing the graphics
  • Some more challenge
  • maybe a mobile port? :D

Power Tower :)

Hello here is my ludum dare 39. Basically you must climb a tower and manage your stamina. Stamina slowely goes down to get more stamina you must eat bananas which appear every so often.

I know this isnt the best but I was very busy but still wanted to participate. I only got about 10 hours to work on it and I think it went pretty good (also I could think of anything to do for the first hour lol)

Compo/Jam done. Play and Rate games!

Well the Compo and Jam have ended.

If you had troubles submitting your game, reach out to me here and I can help.

NEW: Also hey! Some streamers, youtubers, and other media people want suggestions for games to play. Give theme here:

/dare-to-play-ludum-dare-39

What can I do to my game?

(Edited for clarity)

Your game is done. You shouldn't be changing it anymore. The game you submitted should be the game people play.

After the Ludum Dare deadline, you are allow to port your game to other platforms (Windows, Linux, HTML5, etc). We only require that you finish the game for one platform by the deadline. Ports should be as close to the original submitted game as possible.

As for bug fixes, you shouldn't be changing your game, with the sole exception of fixes for problems that are stopping people from playing or finishing your game (and thus rating your game). That doesn't mean add new features. That doesn't mean tweaking, tuning, or balancing it. What that means is if you need to change something so the majority of players can play or finish your game, you can.

For example, lets say last minute you tuned a value wrong and the game became unbeatable. Or you disabled something by accident and forgot to enable it. You are allowed to fix this. Be sure to leave a log of changes on your page, so new players can see it was changed.

When you change too much, it becomes a Post Event game. We still need your Compo/Jam version here (for playing and rating), but for the rest of the world you are free to improve your game and show it at its best. Just do us a favour and make the Event version the first link people see. Thanks!

Play and Rate games!

For the next 3 weeks, we'll be playing and rating the games you made this past weekend.

ludum-dare/39/games

Be sure you use the event page games link. The [GAMES] button on the homepage is all Ludum Dare games.

:warning: If you want a score at the end of Ludum Dare 39, you need ratings! :warning:

And the best way to get ratings is to play games, rate games, and leave feedback!!

Feedback rewards are new as of Ludum Dare 38. When you're viewing a game page, we highly encourage you to glance at the other comments on the page. If you see someone has good/useful/constructive feedback on a game, please give that comments a ! This is how we know a comment is good, when you like it.

What's next?

My immediate focus is on making it easier to sort through games.

If you're a Windows user, you're fine. Just visit the games page and start browsing. However if you're a Linux or other platform user (like myself), finding games you can run without rebooting/dual booting is more work.

I was hoping to get this working tonight, but it's going to be a bit more work that I had hoped.

nogam.png

I'll have a better idea of where we are tomorrow night.

When is Ludum Dare 40?

Official announcement we're saving for results day (August 23rd), but do expect early December.

That's it for now. Gonna grab me some Z's.

Light Out: My First Ludum Dare.

You have to walk through a maze-like random generated building and survive for 5 hours.

This is my fist Ludum Dare submission. I spent about 12 hours in this project. It was hard but i did it:)

Growing Pains, an Existential Take on Running Out of Power

Growing Pains is a little bit different than the other LD39 Games that you've seen, but trust me, you haven't seen any like this yet.

We were super excited to get this turned in, 10 minutes before the deadline. I still have a caffeine buzz...

Tools that I didn't use

The first post of this LD was the tools that I was going to use, to make art and music creation easier for me.

Well, I used none of the art making ones, since Game maker has it's own sprite creation engine built-in, and I can test it straight away.

Also, for all the background I made, whenever I'm creating wallpapers, thaubnails, backgrounds, ect. I always use Camtasia Studio. It has a color-removal option, Lots of 3d options when it comes to images, Lots of effects, and I've been using it for years, so I know it better than any other video/image making program.

(Just to not create any misunderstandings, Camtasia Studio is primarly a video making engine, one of the best. I just use it for an additional wallpaper creation methode)

So, I used none of my new art making tools. Moving on to the music ones.

While it is true that I didn't make any music for the game, and just used incompetch.com to fill in the blank, I made one terrible sound effect! An explosion! That was made with Bfxr, and was made on the first day. After that, I didn't even think of using it, and that implies to the rest music making programms I've got.

(That could be because I didn't make music. I might have used them if I had made music)

So yea, I only got to use one of the six programms I got...

Well, the result was fine, so I guess I didn't need some of them. I'll stick to what I know for art, and try to get good at music production. Sorry if at the next jam, I make the music and forget to add a "mute" button. Just turn your volume down and it should be fine! (hopefully)

My Kingdom for a Rabbit!- A Postmortem

MKFAR01.png

Over the weekend, I made a small game called My Kingdom for a Rabbit. It is a game of information that has the player figuring out the best heir to rule a rabbit kingdom when the current queen passes. The game works, currently, by selecting four rabbits to go on a test and seeing how well those rabbits did. The rabbits have five stats and each test checks two of the rabbits’ stats. A slight bit of randomness happens and a different result happens if the rabbit succeeds at both, neither, just one, or couldn’t possibly have won at all. At the end of fifteen rounds, the player must decide on a good rabbit, and then the game tells the player how well that rabbit did. That’s how it works now. Obviously, there are many things I wanted to include but couldn’t, and the game doesn’t work quite how I’d like it, but I’m overall happy with what I produced. Go play the game over here.

The Idea

The note card that I have written down for the original idea reads thus:
Premise- An old ruler looks out over the kingdom and tries to prepare the kingdom for the transition of power and selecting the successor. A bit like ‘Long Live the Queen’ and estate management.
Originally, I had been intending to make a game where you select an heir from a small amount of people and groom the kingdom to ease the transition. So, you send your heirs out on quests, and based on how they do, you build up the kingdom to suit one of their needs. Thus the idea was to have a kingdom building phase to the game, where you managed and built up resources. There was also supposed to be random events that happened as time went on, which might cost kingdom resources. Absolutely this is an ambitious concept, and I recognized it early in development.
The rabbits happened on Friday, just before the Dare started. I got wind that the start of Ludum Dare coincided with the birthday of Beatrix Potter. For those who don’t know, Beatrix Potter was an English illustrator and storyteller who wrote and drew children’s books about animals. Her most famous work was a series of books about Peter Rabbit. While I don’t think I ever had any of her books as a child, I do remember watching some of the animation based on the books, made many years later. Thus, on Friday, I decided that if a proper theme was picked, I would make a game about rabbits as a nod to Beatrix Potter. The queen in my game is also named Beatrix.

The Challenge

When the theme was announced, I was really excited. “Running Out of Power” was a good theme that I thought people would really play with (and I wasn’t wrong). After the initial excitement wore off, though, I realized something. This game was going to require a lot of art, specifically storybook-style art. I’m... not the best artist, and in a time crunch, I’m even worse. Still, I really liked the idea and wanted to do this game, so I decided to go forward anyway.

LD39Screen7-29-428-2.png (Here’s some of my early quick art, for example)

Some Hurdles

The game itself was fairly easy to make, but the original idea required more than that. I started out making notes of resources to track and an internal game state that expected events and kingdom growth to happen. Those are still in the game, but after the first night of work I realized that I needed to cut those features out. Otherwise I would end up with nothing to show. I spent about three hours writing out the plan for the game, which is probably more than most people do right at the start. Identifying what was needed by the game really helped me isolate the potential problems and discover the parts that could be cut. At the end of the first day, I knew that I wanted most to make a game about rabbits in a succession crisis, and so I scaled down to just that. Looking back, I’m glad I removed the kingdom management. The more I made the game, the less excited I got for that part of the original idea. Going forward won’t even consider it.

Some Good Things

I made myself a checklist of tasks for this game. My checklist is in the form of “Required”, “Optional”, and “Nice to Have”. The first was what the game absolutely needed. This included things like a text box and a game cycle. The optional list was anything I could work on if I had time after the required stuff was added in. Nice to have meant I knew I wasn’t going to get to it. A bunch of required things got moved to nice to have after I decided on the new focus. One thing, rabbit traits, got moved to optional. Rabbit traits were supposed to be things that affected the game in a way similar to Werewolf or Mafia roles. I decided I didn’t have time to design and implement them, but they were still more important than things I had cut entirely or things like “more music”. A single music track was on my required list. Backdrop art for scenes was actually on the optional list, so I forced myself to make music on Sunday before I allowed myself to do any backdrop art. This checklist really helped me scope my project, and I encourage others to make them.
Another helpful thing was actually connecting with the community. I joined the Discord server for this event, and just having people who were also jamming to talk to was helpful. On Sunday, though, I had to close it entirely. I found it a bit distracting and seeing people have troubles was frustrating and not helping. So, joining the community was great, but I needed to take breaks.

The Future

I like this little game. Other people seem to find the game ok as well. There’s a bunch of stuff I’d like to do differently. There’s a ton of stuff I’d like to add. I want to rotoscope some rabbits. I want rabbits to commit sabotage. I want rabbits to be put at risk. The ultimate goal would be to get the kind of interaction that you might get in a Shahrazad story or a Brother’s Grimm fairy tale. I can’t find it, but I remember one about three princes being sent out to find a gift for the king, to determine who was most suitable to rule, and one of them kills the other two and becomes outcast, gaining nothing for his treachery.
I would like to take more inspiration from games like Werewolf, and have the rabbits interact with one another based on their traits. A friend brought up the idea of having some pre-information to base your initial choices on, and I thought it might be nice to have a family reputation and a profession (things that would be very publicly known), to give the player an idea of who they might consider. Traits and stats would still be hidden information and might contradict the public information. Random events also something I’d like to have. These break up the round to round action and can throw wrenches into the works. I would also not mind allowing the player to assign Advisor Bobbits to a task during the week, getting more targeted information to fill in gaps of knowledge.
The thing that the game needs much more of is a bit of variety. At the moment, the rabbits go on the same test and have the same response. The week passes the same way. The ending is the same for all rabbits with a particular stat pool total. The ending, particularly, should play out a bit more like a storybook where we get to see specific events that come up, related to their stats, trait, former profession, and family. I would love it if, sometimes, a rabbit discovers a way to free the rabbitdom from the fickle nature of the crown, letting the enlightened rabbits govern themselves without the figurehead. I hope this sounds exciting to you because I’m excited for the idea. It will take a bunch of careful design balancing, but I have the foundation in place.

Overall

It was a good Dare. I enjoyed my game, and enjoyed seeing people make theirs as well. I’m really happy to go and play some games and see what others made from the theme. Thanks for making something alongside me. I hope you all had fun! Here's another link to the game in case you missed it.

Plugging under-appreciated games

So, I don't know what the rules are here, but are we allowed to make blog posts about under-recognized games? I have seen two or three games stuck in the "Zero" category that really deserve to be reviewed. People put in a lot of work into their games, and maybe don't know they are supposed to rate other games, I guess. Anyway, Just wondering what we are allowed to do. Thanks.

The Last Question

This Ludum Dare I didn't really have to the time to make it in the main competition. But the theme wouldn't get out of my head.. Sunday out of a sudden I remembered the most brilliant short story "The Last Question" from Isaac Asimov. That is the perfect story for the theme "Running out of Power". Running out of time myself I decided to make a Visual Novel adaption from this story for the Ludum Dare Jam using existing assets.

It is my first visual novel and the first game ever (for me), where I put in actual story and content.

The visual and music resources are from the Humble Game Making Bundle (from June 2015) [1].

The characters where made using the Anime Character generator with the "Guy Sprite" from SilverHyena[2] (integrated in the generator by Vixeria[3])

I enjoyed making this and reading the story over and over again for testing. I hope some of you might enjoy the story as much as I do.

My 3rd Ludum Dare and my first 3D game

For Ludum Dare 39, I want to try something new. I want to try to make a 3D game because I usually made 2D games. I learned Blender to model in a week, I am pretty satisfied with what I can do with Blender, but of course I still need to learn a lot.

Well, this is my game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/winding-woods

Some cleanup, post-LD39

As an aside, I greatly improved the Tiled map loading system I wrote for Unity.

2017-07-31_22-15-50.png

Eeek! Okay, so building a PolygonColldier2D is really slow, because it runs decomposition every time you insert a new polygon!

So I modified the code so it took my loaded collision polygons and then ran a simple swept-line combiner.

Unityem2017-07-31/em23-34-57.png

That's a lot better. Let's see what the performance is now.

Okay I can live with that!

Try Blocks of Power

I really wanted to finish in time for the compo and had to cut few features. Realistically the game needed one more day I think, but what's done is done and all that remains is get some people to try my game.

Take a look at and rate Blocks of Power if you will!

Three days, three people, one game

This time we were only three but we had a little more time for completing the jam. We were more ambitious and, as I believe it will always be, we didn't achieve to put many, many, many things in our game, for instance that perfect balance in the difficulty curve is something we failed to do before the game publication.

We had a wonderful time, we distributed the jobs in a more efficient way but we ended as exhausted (by monday we were running out of power) as the last time. We definitely are looking forward to play other creations made during this weekend and for Ludum Dare 30.

Everything a good game should have and beyond!

This was my first game jam and I didn't expected it to go soo well. This game is literally everything a good game should have and even beyond -

  • Art - Beautiful art style!

  • Gameplay - Oh boi! You're at the right place. Infinite hours of distinct gameplay in the procedurally generated dungeon.

  • Sound - I have to admit I had the best sound designer I could get!

  • Story - Same best story writer! Actually the sound designer and the story writer are two different people from non game background. The story writer is an anime story writer and sound designer is a composer for the movies. So, I can assure it will be very soothing and awesome!

"Am I doing something wrong?" or "My first jam mistakes"

Hello!

As I said before, ше was my first time in game jam and know I want to sum up some moments:

1) Ambitions.

Of course, I've wanted to make a great game of interest but I forgot one simple thing ... I have only 2 days for Compo and if I miss this deadline (as I did) 3 days for Jam. The first idea was to make a game with a little story, cool fighting, art, and animations, but then I thought and rethought the game concept for a little easer to develop. For next LD I'll do something easier with more interesting gameplay.

2) Sleep.

Yes, I saw the video about surviving at LD. But I slept now enough and my brain was exhausted at the end of the jam. Keep you mind clear and sleep enough.

3) Routine.

If you are tired with programming or drawing - just take a breath, do something else, maybe even just other tasks. Making games should be a fun process and you shouldn't want to kill yourself after big tasks. And of course do something active time by time, push ups and etc.

Anyway, that was a really great experience for me and definitely, I'll join next jam with new ideas!

You can see my game at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/energy-drones

P.S. Sorry for my English if I made mistakes :D

Cave Light

First of all, congratulations to everyone who participated, I have seen some good looking stuff submitted.

ScreenShot00001.png

This is my second time jamming alone, 4th time LD jammer. It was very hard on me, but the experience was well worth it. I decided to go with 2D platformer, because I felt it was something I could do in the given time. So after a long weekend I have managed to finish something of a game. I did not accomplish everything I had set out to, but I'm proud of it nonetheless.

Things I wish I could have done more of include:

-More NPCs at the base.

-Enemies attack the NPCs when the light is low.

-More sound effects and particles.

-Music. I did end up making some, but it didn't fit the mood well enough and I didn't have time to adjust it.

-A BIG one is animations for the Player and NPC. There are no jumping or walking animations :(

-Better UI.

This jam I learned the importance of quick iteration and leaving a mess of your project to get it done XD. I had fun though. I would really appreciate it if you gave the game a try and thanks in advance to anyone who does. I will be playing games later in the week when I have the time. Review mine and I will def return the favor :)

ScreenShot00004.png

Second time participating, had a blast!

Some observations: * Doubling your team size from 2 to 4 increases your team effort by ~100%! * Having an actual artist in the team is crucial (shoutouts to @huonoadisainia) * Adding a subtle sneak peek to your game in your blog post is totally awesome!

We finished and submitted our game before the deadline! woo hoo. Yesterday was mostly spent polishing and bug fixing (though there are still some issues left in the game, if very minor)

I'm very very happy with what we've made! I would love for you guys to check it out : D

TITAN, Defend The Earth

That’s it we’ve just finished our first Ludum Dare Jam!

It was quite exhausting but here it is:

Working on exporting Torch Boy to HTML

A lot of people are asking me for the HTML version of the game. I'm using Game Maker Studio and didn't have the HTML exporter, so I bought it :|. So it's coming soon, just need to fix some small bugs to keep the experience consistent with the windows version.

Post submission modifications, what do you think?

Hi, what do you think about modifications made to the game after the deadline. I know, the bug fixes are allowed, but no new features. What about the configuration, like power-up generation rate, weapon damage, user keyboard controls? Are these new features or not? Is it fair to update game like this? Or rather release new non-rated version?

Project Sunspot - Walkthrough (SPOILERS!)

sunspotemheader/emwalkthrough.jpg

Hello everyone!

Having recieved some feedback on my game, it's apparent to me that it's quite challenging and may take some time to complete due to the trial-and-error nature of the gameplay. While it was always my intention to make a challenging game that rewards patience, I appreciate that there are a huge number of games to play and some people may not want to spend too much time on a single game. So with that in mind I'm providing a walkthrough for those who would like to see my full game but have limited time. If you haven't tried the game at all yet, I encourage you to try it first before reading this!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/project-sunspot

walkthroughemscreenshot/em1.png

[Intro]

To hear the premise for the game, talk to robot at the power supply (hereafter called "PowerNPC"). They will tell you that you are solar powered, which should be apparent from your power regenerating when you enter the beam of sunlight. They also tell you how to use dash (SPACE) and your light (L), both of which are core elements in the gameplay. They mention that you should bring them any components or upgrade items that you find. This is key to progressing in the story so you will find yourself backtracking to PowerNPC quite a lot.

Opposite PowerNPC is an old door which at this point cannot be opened. Turn left at the door. You will want to turn your light on at this point, as you can easily fall down the gaps in the dark.

[First gap - to main walkway]

This is the first obstacle in the game. With your light on it should be easy. Just walk up to the edge and press space and you will jump across the ledge. A couple of paces forward there is a door control switch on the left. At this point it tells you that it is missing a component. Proceed down the walkway and you will hear the sound of the malfunctioning elevator.

[Second gap - to disused machine]

Much like the first gap except you will have to time your boost so that you don't collide with the elevator. Again it's a good idea to have your light on for this. Also, the gap is very slightly wider than the first, so it helps to hold down the up arrow while boosting for this one. You may find yourself caught on the edge of walkway, but you can boost yourself back up if this happens.

walkthroughemscreenshot/em2.png

After the gap, to the left is a disused machine (in build 0.2.4 the machine appears to be blocked by a railing but you can actually pass through this). Interacting with the machine yields a component. To the front is a door which is locked. Go to the right to find a ledge protruding into the chasm.

[Chasm]

Go up to the edge of the platform and you will be able to react with another NPC, hereafter called "ChasmNPC". This is also the second sun spot where you can recharge your power. They ask you to get rid of the robot on the other side of the door, and they also give you the pulse unit. At this point you must backtrack to the PowerNPC. Jumping the gaps is more difficult backwards due to the camera angle. Charge your power fully first, and take your time. Speaking to the PowerNPC the first time will give you the pulse ability upgrade (P). Speak to them again and they will convert the disused machine component into a door switch component.

walkthroughemscreenshot/em3.png

Go to the old door opposite powerNPC. You can now use your pulse ability to blast it open. Through the door you will collect the Boost Unit +1. Take this to PowerNPC to upgrade your boost ability, which will allow you to jump to the robot through the door, hereafter called "RedEyedNPC". Inserting the door switch component into the door switch will unlock the door to the RedEyedNPC. (In build 0.2.4, you may get stuck on the way back through the old door. You can boost your way through if necessary).

[Through the door - RedEyedNPC]

In order to progress you must have the boost +1 upgrade, the pulse ability upgrade, and have inserted the switch component into the switch. Head down the corridor past the disused machine and open the door. Head carefully through to the edge of the platform. To defeat the RedEyedNPC you must perform a boost-pulse combo. Boost across the gap first. You will have a fraction of a second before the NPC lunges and destroys you. Hit P immediately after landing in front of him and he will be deactivated (requires quite strict timing). Once he is deactivated it may be a good idea to boost back across the gap and recharge your energy at the chasm sunspot. Go to where RedEyedNPC was, turn and go down the platform and you will see an upgrade collectible.

walkthroughemscreenshot/em4.png

[Trap]

This can be the hardest part of the game, especially if your power is not recharged. As you approach the upgrade, a trap will spring, freezing your movement. ChasmNPC appears and tells you that he wanted you out of the way so he could get some components he was after. Once the dialogue closes and he disappears, your power consumption will resume (faster if you have the light switched on). Free yourself from the trap by using your pulse ability (P). You then have to go back to where RedEyedNPC was and boost back across the gap. The camera angle makes this difficult, especially if you are panicking due to low power. Line it up as best you can. Your boost should clear the gap comfortably. Steering yourself through the doorway can be difficult due to the camera angle and obscuring scenery. Get to the chasm sunspot as quickly as possible and recharge your energy.

[Boost +2]

Head back down the main walkway, talking care not to collide with the elevator. When you reach PowerNPC they will have disappeared, leaving in their place the Boost +2 upgrade.

Collect this and interact with the workbench next to the power supply. Doing this will upgrade your boost to its maximum strength. Head to the chasm and boost across to the illuminated platform on the far right, which is another sunspot. Heading down this walkway will take you to the door to the battery storage facility, which is the end of the game.

[END]

I hope you find this walkthrough helpful. Thanks to everyone who plays Project Sunspot, I worked hard on it and I hope you'll enjoy playing it. I look forward to hearing your feedback!

Looking for VR games to play!

VR jam games are notoriously under-rated just ratings wise, if you have a VR game for me to play and rate, comment here! I will periodically check back.

I have a CV1 Rift/Touch and also a Vive so I can play pretty much anything.

Feel free to also play/rate mine, runs off SteamVR so it'll work for anything that SteamVR works with!

(Maybe not NoloVR since that doesn't report the controller velocity to SteamVR which my game uses a lot)

WE DID IT!

This is the first morning I've woken up with nothing to do... and it feels great!

I've loved working with EnigmaDragons ( @silas-reinagel , @noah-reinagel , @caleb-reinagel and @timeracers ), writing what ended up being a fifteen minute soundtrack.

This Ludum Dare was the first time I got to experience working solely on the music, and, being a studying composer, it's been really useful; I'll definitely do a similar thing in a future jam!

My favourite part, though, was naming the pieces. Whilst I may have uploaded them with logical names, like "GarethsTheme", I was having a great time burying their true names in the meta tags, my favourite being "Hero? More like here-go", as cringe-worthy as it may be.

Now I'm just looking forward to playing some games!

Well done everyone!

Our entry for LD39!

Hello everyone!

ChimsterGigafactorywide.png

We've made a new game, as usual focused on humour and very cartoony. Trying some different mechanics from our other LD games... since that is the spirit of LD right? suffering and learning :D

So, a lot went into audio, all the music bits are made by us, the voice acting, and every sprite. All and all, we're quite proud of it :)

gif2.gif

Here's the link for webGL: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/chimster-gigafactory

and a warning: **All characters and pop culture references in this game are entirely fictional. All voices are impersonated… poorly. Any resemblance to existing games, shows, people, Lone Echo, or companies, is purely coincidental.

Changing the site up a bit

Since there was a little misunderstanding about picking up the items I've decided to update the itch.io site a bit.

Phew, we finally made it! During a stressful third day, we managed to bring all the game parts together to a mostly satisfying game. The game combines elements from hack'n'slash, stealth & action/adventure genres, so our idea needed a lot more code & balancing than expected, making the final hours pretty stressful :D

Overall it has been a great experience for us, pushing the limits of our previous entries in terms of scope & tech. Here's a quick list of our went well/not well:

What went bad

  • Our initial scope turned out way too big. While we managed to do something acceptable in terms of graphics, the amount of code was really underestimated, and we had to cut features throughout the week-end (e.g. we were supposed to have 2 heroes and either switch between them or play with a friend).
  • With so much systems to implement, basic fighting wasn't stable until ~6h before the deadline, which was frustrating for everyone.
  • Unity occasionally got in the way, especially for work on level design. We still have to figure out how to build large levels comfortably, with or more clever use of prefabs & maybe additive scenes.

What went well

  • We were mostly well organized, with the help of a Trello board. It really helped us priorizing things and noticing early when things got out of hand.
  • Even after cutting down large parts of the game scope, we still have something quite cohesive, fun enough to play, and hopefully finishable. We're really looking forward to feedback for a better idea on how we did.
  • I (@wan) challenged myself into doing all the graphics, despite little artistic experience. With the help of @thrainsa who did the animations, it turns out we managed to produce a respectable amount and quality of assets. And an interesting enough map.

Modular Destruction Labs

This is our Entry for LD39, it's a game called Modular Destruction Labs. The aim is to build a robot and get it to the end of the course without running out of power.

MDL build area 2.gif

It's not entirely what we had planned, due to some restrictions with Construct we had to have the modules fly around loosely on a tether. This has led to a unique and often ridiculous control method, half the challenge is getting the robot to go in the direction you want.

MDL flying.gif

Play the game here and I hope you have fun building different robots and trying to control them.

It's time to cleaning my code

I finally did it for Compo and quite satisfied with the result. It much more better than my last two LD entry. But now it's time to do some cleaning on my code because I notice some bugs still been there even the game works just like I wanted.

Post Mortem - LD 39 : Fizzle

Sondrian’s Ludum Dare 39 Post Mortem

Its that bittersweet moment when ludum dare is at an end, and you only have to show what you were able to produce. This has been my 8th time participating in Ludum Dare (second since the new website was officially launched), and overall I am pretty happy about the results.

I worked with 2 other people; Fariel and Mr McGibblets. My job was to produce the audio visual assets and smarter people than I took those assets and actually made them into a game. Given this narrow-ish band of involvement, I was still extremely busy until the last 6 hours, and even then there was a lot to do to get ready to publish the game.

There is a difference between an artist and a game developer who makes art though, because it comes down to a lot more than just how to do the art. My greatest challenge when producing assets is to a two-fold challenge. I need to figure out what we are going to need before we need to implement it, and I need to know how to format what we are working on so that the implementation process goes smoothly. These two aspects make a huge difference in terms of volume of work that can be outputted given the limited timespan.

I had not really done a Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past/ Binding of Isaac style game before, and it was an interesting challenge. Using a predetermined tileset layout, I made the tiles and Fariel was able to simply take the image and turn it into a paint brush and “paint” the level without having to hand place each tile. You can make a pretty big game if you don’t have to waste time with silly hand work. Figuring out how to open doors and do all the rest of that was interesting. I think next time I want to use the assets as a 2:1 pixel scale as I just think pixel art looks better blown up a bit.

I used a “orange/red is off” and “green is on” color scheme to help indicate to the player the progression and whether or not a thing was activated. conveyfe-conveyers.png pressure plates.png f155l3-bot-movementanimations.png I think that it worked out pretty well.

Those enemy things were really creepy too CREATURE 1 FULL ARRAY.png

I had a lot of fun making the music and SFX, but other than the really nitty gitty, there isn’t a lot that can be said about it. What I can say is that, and it amused me to no end, I wrote the music in the key of C# because it was robots and computer system. The usual challenge with sound effects is how to create the sounds so that you can hear exactly what was going on, nothing is too loud/quiet or out of balance, and that the sounds feel “right” for the think that is happening. You have to use sounds to communicate to the player what is going on when they can’t use the visual clues, and also to reinforce those things with are going on on-screen. For this, I felt pretty good about the results.

There isn’t really too much that I want to say went badly. I would have liked to see more set pieces in the game to make the world feel better, more broken things and what have you. I would also have liked to have been able to add more “feel” effects. You can’t add too much feedback, that just makes the game world a better world to play in.

Also, animation is hard, but its really rewarding. I can’t wait for the next LD jam. The best game out there is yet to be made!

Thanks to everyone who watched me on Twitch and who has and will play and rate the game. I love this community and I’m glad to be a part of it.

MacOS port for my game & postmortem

Was able to get a MacOS port working last night, you can find the link on the game page here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/energy-grid

Postmortem

I decided to use Rust for my game, pulling over some previous components and systems like transform and animation.

Main crates used:

  • gfx
  • specs
  • glutin
  • rusttype
  • rodio

There were many things to figure out how to do though during the weekend. To name the major ones:

  • Rusttype/drawing fonts, I spent about 7 or 8 hours on this on Saturday
  • Audio. Was quicker to figure out, but still not happy with how i've structured it either.

The font & audio pieces proved difficult due to the async nature of specs. Specs is really awesome, I enjoy the API, and how quickly it runs. But being async and requiring things like Arc for shared data proves an issue when you start needing instances of types that implement gfx::Factory (a trait type that defines how to create things like textures), or wanting to store Rodio Decoders in components. Decoders are used to create play instances after reading the audio file.

I don't see these as flaws in the libraries or anything, but something that I haven't figured out yet. I worked around these problems by keeping an external glyph cache of text, so the text component could dictate when its contents changed. My main render loop outside of specs would then read that string and build the glyph data, or re-use the previous if one for that string had already been created.

I'm excited to back port a lot of these learnings into my on going project, refactor some of the ideas, and see what I can make better.

I think Rust is in a pretty good spot for working on smaller games, though you definitely need to be willing to figure things out. Be willing to dive in to both documentation & code.

Light

Hello guys. I'm back with my new entry for the LD39 and I'm quite happy with the final resault. It's a simple platform game in a super meat boy style. You are running out of power(your light) and have to complete each level in a short amount of time. So if you want to try i leave the like for the game right here. Remember to leave me feedback so that i can make it better. Thanks for playing it!!!

Test my Linux build please?

Screen4Text.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/theres-no-place-like-home

I've added a Linux build but have no way to test it. I would greatly appreciate anyone letting me know if it does or doesn't work!

Small and easy improvements I should have made

For starters, I should have fixed the UI. Currently the ui-elements are always the same size, in the middle of the window, when it would have been better to have it scale evenly with the screen (always covering the same percentage of it) I was trying to do this, but gave up on figuring it out because I had more important stuff to finish in-game, then just never bothered to look more into it. Seems like I even forgot to enable resizing the window, wops.

Another quick thing would be adding some actual gameplay, as it currently stands, you just wait for energy to run out, or for more files to get deleted, which is kinda dull. A far more interesting concept would have been to have to use the energy to fight of something, making deleting files of your computer actually mean something for you.

Alternatively make it even more like an idle game and add upgrades and such, then have losing energy not be a loss-state, but rather just not being able to operate energy-driven machinery, making more of an experiment to see how much you are willing to delete to gain points, rather than to not lose the game.

I had enough time to do this, but I turned out to be too lazy, so all shame on me, lol. Here's the game if you want to try it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/feed-me-your-files

Help two bad drivers get to the store in Shoulda, Coulda, but Didn't

ld39.jpg

Play Shoulda, Coulda but Didn't

Our game is done! We took damn near every second of our available time to do so - finding issues 5 minutes before submission time is never good - but now you can help two crappy drivers - Will (the co-developer) and I - get to the store in their cheap, rickety electric car.

You can pick which of us is driving, and our in-car banter changes depending on who's behind the wheel. You drive through a valley full of hills, mountain, palm trees, a frozen lake and even a volcano on your way to Aaghshop, ramming power poles for electricity and grabbing up repair kits when the car gets too banged up.

The road is pretty straight forward, and careful, steady drivers can make it to the end almost without any extra electricity at all. However, there is a large amount of off-road space, and aside from the main mountain ridge on the far perimeter, you're free to explore it all, finding hidden power-ups and more. Of course, the car isn't made for much off-roading, and you're going to burn through more electricity exploring, so you have to be careful not to get stuck, wrecked or out of power before reaching the store.

It's a fairly short game, but we'd recommend playing it twice - once with each driver - just for the dialog. As a side note, the game's name is Shoulda, Coulda but Didn't, but I was so tired last night when we finally exported and uploaded it that I called it Coulda, Shoulda but Didn't when I first uploaded it to Itch, when I submitted it here, and when I named the the game itself in Unity before export - and I didn't notice any of that until this morning. Sleep is your friend, people!
