Shameless Promotion of Ludum Dare Game

Play It Here

It's a Three Dimensional Platformer! I made it during the Compo, without any engine . I Used GLFW/OpenGL/OpenAL/RapidXML/GLM and am very very happy with the project

The game you should save today: Plug Me

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/plug-me-1 This game is purely amazing. The art is simple but effective. And the levels are crafted so well that you'll probably tear your hair out of your head. :yum:

Please export for Web and/or Linux!

I'm a Linux user and from our team only the graphics guy is using Windows. Anyone using a recent version of Unity or libGDX should be able to export a Web-version or at least versions for Linux and MacOS.

Not only will you make me happy, but you will probably receive more rating as well due to the higher accessibility!

Our game Legendary Space Space Space has a Web version, versions for Windows, MacOS and Linux and is completely Open Source.

Humble Bundle - Game maker bundle!

Hello guys!

Hope your LD was great and that you are playing and rating all the games! I just wanted to let you know that Humble Bundle is having a re-bundle of one of their most popular bundles - The Game Maker Bundle!

You can grab a full Game Maker license with a few export modules for $15! (retail is well over $700) OH! and you get some games as well!

HumbleBundle.PNG

How to get it
  • Use this link to get it (using this link helps a friend of mine) - Link 1
  • Use this link to get it without helping my friend - Link 2

If you do get it using the first link, thank you alot! It really helps my friend!

You can check her out here if you want. (should go live in 2 hours-ish)

She is a full-time streamer, and she streams alot of Blizzard games with a focus on D3.

So... Holiday...

I'm abroad at the moment, and only have access to my phone and an iPad, so rating games might be hard xD

If anyone has a game that will run in a browser and will work with a controller or touchscreen, could you please send me a link? Thanks :)

Karma system is a real threat to this jam

Karma system is in my opinion an absolute non sens. And before calling me worlds and closing your mind, at least give me a chance to explain myself :

-Already been said syndrome -> one day or another, all the comments on a game will say anything there is to say about a game. So what? this system will only reward firsts comments ? is it ok with you?

-"Great game" syndrome -> A nice feedback is totally different from a useful feedback. Yet how many "Great game" comments can you count on each page ? EVEN ON BAD ONES. I mean, it's nice to say that you liked a game, don't get me wrong. It's REALLY BAD to say it just hoping you get karma in exchange. Leading to another one :

-The honesty problem -> Can you insure me that you didn't use the shit sandwich method on your comments? You want someone to eat the 'Shit' (critic), you serve it between two lovely slices of bread. All that to ensure that you don't get a "non karma for you" situation ? And don't bother telling me that "you as an individual never skipped giving karma because of a bad comment". Sure you didn't. I didn't neither. But you or i didn't neither killed anybody right ? so should we remove all laws restricting it ?

-Rewarding teams -> The more people a team is composed, the more they will accumulate more comments, and so more karma for one game.

-Rewarding judging teams -> pretty much same as above but absurder : you give a feed back on a 10 persons team, 10 persons will give you karma. What a good deal.

-Increases the time necessary to judge a game -> giving feedback on ALL game you judge is time consuming. And that would be totally ok with me IF it didn't lead to another problem :

-Enlarging the gape of time passed judging games between popular ldjamers and non ones : This one break my heart a little cause it sounds like a direct attack toward a person. It's not. Or at least it's toward their behavior, not their work (which i love) nor their personality (i'm sure they are lovely) i'm sure there is plenty of other examples i could have found, but i will only take the ones i know.

SOOO let's take two examples : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/zero-volt-x https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/pipe-trek I would encourage you to see how many games they rated, how much feedback they gave and yet how much they got.

As a reminder : i'm not saying neither they do nothing for the community or something like that. I'm just comparing time passed judging and giving feedback.

-The "GiveALikeAndSubscribe" syndrome : I mean, do i really have to explain this one ? Anybody know youtube right ? Do we really want ldjam to be a karmabait fest ?

So here you go. Feel free to respond to me of course, I WILL GIVE YOU KARMA FOR THIS <- See ? Another problem.

p.s. : Sorry for my sometime (often?) bad English, this isn't my main language and i'm already bad in my main one.

Really, bugfixing?

It was really great to see people actually liking Cavernous, also asking us to polishing it! It would be difficult, but at least here there are a list of really basic bugfixing for all you folks. Thank you for your feedbacks!

  • solved a bug that allowed the player to climb indefinitely
  • resized the climbing area to better match the visual representation
  • added an exit option (p/Esc to bring up pause menu)

Game Data Link Fixed

Hi all. Just to mention that I've fixed the error I made while publishing my game, I forgot to inlude the data folder with the .exe.

So, here is the link for my game "Code Power" Windows: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz-TIMscpkElMG9fX2paXzNZY2s/view?usp=sharing

Three Option

Hi developers and gamers! This was my second time on Ludum Dare.

The publish was a big fail because I misspelled the HTML5 link.. But now, I want to say 3 things! Firstly, I fixed the link :D Secondly, created a little trailer to show off my game's innovation!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NQGC_unCSQ

Thirdly, I created a Timelapse video when I made the game to motivate other developers to compete on this event (again)! :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxM5r9XWWxU

Reached at least 20 votes yesterday!

Ooooh am I glad my first Ludum Dare got more than 20 votes. The rating itself is not the reason I am glad though: it is all the feedback, comment, and suggestion that I like. Please keep 'em coming! Knowing people play my game is warming to the heart.

Electric Castle

My suggentions on Ludum Dare

  • I want an api to log which level my players achieves. Or high scores, gameplay times. An achievement system like the one on steam, i mean. Maybe show them on the comments. It is a good feedback and can avoid someone donnot play the game but only comment to get karmas.
  • I want a search game function. My parterner gives me some good games she downloaded, but I donnot know the game's webpage, so I cannot comment.
  • VR special column. Only few on this jam can play vr games, but I have many good vr points and like to make vr minigames. I think it should be listed out for the vr users

Thank you for playing my game

Play MOTHER here.

Thank you for rates - i am really impressed :)

I am reall impressed by such this kind of feedback. I was a ludum dare fan since a year or so but i didnt had the time to attend. For my first LD game i am really proud of it (sure it needs a lot of improvement in the Post Version). Also i had this idea about the game some weeks ago and as i saw the theme on saturday morning i thought "okay - i dont have much time this weekend ..but i should try it to make it".

My 1yr daugther was sleeping and i had some hours time to

So this is the result. And i really loved the competition. I can now say "i made a game in less then 72 hours". And i am really impressed by how many peoples around the world created over 2400 games in just 72 hours.

So if you want to checkout my game - play it here.

Hey everybody! I'm really excited about this game I made with the Phaser framework! I like Phaser a lot and if you haven't heard about it, at least check it out : https://www.phaser.io

It does take away some of the flexibility you would have if you used something like Pixi.js but it simplifies a lot of things that are really hard to manage on mobile like audio, scaling, etc. If you made a game with Phaser and are looking for ratings, be sure to let me know.

This is so cool

Sending messages to other users

I'm getting some very helpful comments on my game, and I am trying to figure out how to send messages to the people who have commented. So far, the only way I have been able to do that is to just post in my own game thread and hope they come back to see it. Any suggestions? Is that even possible? Thanks for the ratings, the suggestions, and any help.

Time to get cosy and rate some more games!

Ok so I might not be as fast on playing and rating games as alot of you are.. but now its time to get crackin and change that!!

I am going to blanket up, make some coffee and heres the kicker.. Im gonna pop some popcorn and watch some movies while rating games!

LD39 Compo: A great first game jam experience

Hi, I am FreedomIsSlavery and this was my first ever game jam or you may say first ever serious game. This is my review of my Ludum Dare experience.

Making the game

Coming up with an idea

So, it's early in the morning, I wake up and check my phone for the Ludum Dare theme, and see "Running Out of Power". At once, ideas about a dictator and some sort of vendetta started propping up in my mind. I spent quite some time thinking over it. Finally, I came to the conclusion that with my limited skillsets, it would not be possible to make such a game. I was frustrated with lack of ideas, and just then my phone discharged and I knew what I was going to do- A charging simulator.

Day 1

Since, I had never effectively made a complete game from scratch before, I chose humble 2D vector graphics for my game. I thought of adding various fancy stuff, but later decided against it. So, there I was making graphics for my game, when I realised that I had spent my entire day just on getting the graphics done. So I quickly switched to code and wrote all the basic rendering code and battery charge-discharge cycle(no gameplay yet). And then, I went to sleep frustrated that my game would be unfinished or boring if finished.

Day 2

Sleep really helped me, as, new morning game me new ideas. I had elaborate concepts for adding levels, customers coming at your phone charging shop. And I opened Inkscape to make customers and I made two or three of them. Then, reality dawned on me. It was simply not possible to make all this stuff. So, I left all of it and just went on to make the basic game loop and by afternoon, I had some gameplay. Then I decided to work on animations and transitions. But, my lack of experience manifested itself. I wasted two hours and could not get a basic screen transition right. I gave up on it and started fixing bugs and improving the overall gameplay. Initially, I had thought that you have to balance the charge (neither overcharge nor discharge) the phones forever, but I quickly realised, it was not going to work out. So, I started working on phones getting fully charged and submitting. Then, I added the hand and charger plugging, unplugging sound and movement. I had all this by evening and everything was working properly, BUT the gameplay was simply not up to the mark. It was horrible. I started tweaking values like a crazy person, and broke some of the alignment stuff (It's still broken). Finally, with 10 hours to go, I thought my game was complete and I submitted it.

Analysis

What went bad (or I overlooked)

  • Did not add music
  • Forgot to add phone blasting when phones were kept on charge for long time (I had it in earlier builds)
  • Should have worked on making the chargers color coded to make them more obvious
  • In-game-instructions should have been less vague
  • Should have spent an hour more and added game modes like easy, medium and hard.
  • Should have uploaded Web(HTML5) build from the beginning
  • Wrote the phone full charge code when I wasn't half asleep (It's a pure disaster, look it up on GitHub)

What went good( or better than expected)

  • The gameplay turned out much better than I had anticipated
  • The sound for phone vibration, plugging, etc. are quite good (me being a first time Audacity user)
  • The ratings have been overwhelmingly positive compared to the naivety of the game

So, basically, I just became complacent with my goals and did not push my limits. Moreover, I had college on Monday with loads of assignments in the backlog. But then again, there will always be bugs and that one feature that would have made it work out.

Nuclear Arms 4: Fallout of the Mountain King

ezgif-3-e0667917c3.gif

7396.png

Another Ludum Dare weekend done, only this time with less people, and a bit less time. We've continued the tradition of using Craig Killbane as our main character, and sending him to fight another wacky enemy (Very loosely based off of our deep Killbane canon).

You can play our submission here:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/nuclear-arms-4-fallout-of-the-mountain-king

With a bit less people than before we decided to use some 2D pathfinder code I've been working on. The code itself I thought was pretty solid, but quickly learned that it worked well only with the configured character size and speed I was using. So when we added in the Bear enemies it did not quite work so well as they were larger and moved faster than what the pathfinder was previously tested on. Fortunately, It did not end up breaking the game, it just shows a little bit some times when the enemies sometimes spin or get stuck in holes. It's something that I plan to work on and fix sometime later, since I thought the code was pretty solid before we ended up actually using it for something.

I usually end up taking off the Monday to finish up our Ludum Dare games, but this one crept up on me so I was too late to request some time off. So the game was mostly finished during the first 48 hours, with only some minor touch-ups before we submitted on Monday

We had a lot of fun this time around, coming up with ideas and stupid plot points to go off of. We hope you all enjoy the ridiculous slides we made to tell our story as well as the shoot-em up game we ended up making. If you liked the game, I would recommend taking a look at some of our past submissions (linked in our submission above) so that you can more thoroughly enjoy the plot ;)

Be on the lookout for Craig Killbane's next game Nuclear Arms 5 Title to be determined coming some time next Ludum Dare (or the one after that).

THANK YOU!

I just reached 20 reviews. This means I am all in. :rocket::rocket::rocket:

Hey there, hardworking jammers and game-players! Normally, I'd do a proper post-mortem write-up, but my current job has me up to my cuticles in work. So, while I can, I'm just gonna put my game up here for you all to see!

It's a pretty difficult game, so hopefully that buys me enough time to do whatever needs to be done. In the meantime, pop a comment down, and I'll do my best to play your game and leave a proper rating and comment!

Blog

First of all, I‘d like thank all of the people who played my game. I‘m really thankful for that.

A little bit of background.

I‘m Ben (Benas in my native language) and this Ludum Dare was my first, but I've participated in other game jams so I know about them a little. I thought that a Compo submission would be great for me, because I like to take on various challenges.

The project

Learning from experience from past jams I wanted to keep the project scope small and try to polish things a lot. I also made a little time management table before the event began to keep up good workflow.

First day

Unfortunately the start of the event was 4:00 a.m. in my country. I've decided to not get up that early and get a fair amount of sleep. I woke up at 7:00 a.m. and in the next hour I came up with the idea for the game. I immediately started prototyping after breakfast. After a couple of hours the prototype was done. I spent almost all of the first day programming. I even had some free time in the evening to go out with my friends. I went to sleep pretty happy about the progress.

Second day

This day started a little later than the previous one (around 8:30). Since the core gameplay was almost done I dedicated this day to graphics and sound. I took on the graphics part first. On the first half of the day I created various sprites and animations/sprite sheets. After lunch I started playing around in bfxr and created all of the sound effects. After that came the part I was most worried about – the music. I've never done anything like that before. After all I've managed to come up with something (More on that). At this time the game was more or less done so I decided to set up the itch.io page and make art/gifs for it. On that night I stayed up until the deadline (which was at 4:00 a.m.). About 30 minutes before the deadline the pressure started to kick in. I finished up the itch.io page and it was about the time to submit the game to Ludum Dare. And then for me, first time Ludum Dare participant, the most stressful part began. The site wasn't loading. I waited and waited and then checked twitter for details and then waited again. Many of you may know that the site went down and I was tapping that F5 button in twitter very very frequently. After some time the host posted a message that the submission deadline will be delayed and I finally went to bed.

The next morning

After waking up I made the submission site and finally submitted the game. I can’t tell what relief I felt after that. After that I took some more sleep (This time less stressful).

Conclusion

This event was the best offline game jam I ever participated. The community is great and friendly. I would’ve never thought that so much people would play my game! I love to create games in jams, they just bring so much new to your life. So much emotions, thoughts, good times and of course experience.

My 5th Ludum Dare experience.

One week ago it was my 5th participation to Ludum Dare, 3rd time in Compo (I've also made it twice with a friend, and I participate with a big team at the Global Game Jam).

Like always I give me one objective : Learn something new, try something new ! This time, after discovering the theme, I choose to make a mobile game (first mobile game). I use processing in all my LD games, and I know Processing Android exist (I've already try it to adapt one of my previous LD game).

The idea for creating a mobile game come from my idea for this theme to interact with the battery of the phone. And to build the game around that.

One of my first idea was to let the player do input by plug and unplug the charger and use that as a mecanic for enigma or writing morse code thanks to that. But I was afraid that will break the phone plug charger.

So at the end I choose to make the game where one of the difficulty level will be determine by the level of the battery ! If you want to check it out it's here :

The last cup of coffee (little) post mortem

Hey all,

This is my third Ludum dare and so far, I see some progress which is nice! This game was a challenge for me as it was my first attempt to 3d modelling and animation and from the first return I have, it is not too bad  (I followed some tutorial on youtube to be fair to understand blender).

If you haven't played it I would very much enjoy you to tell me what you think about my game "The last cup of coffee" :

2017-07-31_00-53-43.png

The last cup of coffee

I made some mistakes, here is what I have so far (as far as I remember) : - The Camera clips through the wall because of the TPS view (This is really problematic for an indoor game :/) - The Aiming sensitivity what over the roof. I have adjusted it in the post compo version but I will definitely add a slider in a config menu later... - The aiming is not precise when you shoot behind you. (I have made the mistake to simply shoot forward in the camera direction without taking in account the weapon position) - I have made a mistake puting so much rigid body everywhere in the compo version (every single chair and computer would react when fired at with physics), this was making the game a little laggy but I have removed the rigidbodies on the post compo version (the optimal would be to disable far and not useful rigidbodies, I will maybe do that if I take some time on polishing it).

There is also some ideas/suggestions to add to the game that were made : - I should limit the number of stapple shot by the stappler to increase the challenge ( with a reloading system ). - I definitely would like to have offered a proper ending else that "congratulation" (don't be disappointed if you complete it) - Some more feedbacks on objectives and Health when they change to be sure people see it. - etc

I would also like to thank all the people who played my game already! If you already have but did not leave a comment, please do it in order to allow me to play your game too!

And here is a gif I made during the development when I was playing with the AI and the ragdolls: ezgif.com-optimize.gif

The first Ludum Dare where I'm partially satisfied with the result - Grid Connect. Would really appreciate some feedback on the gameplay, from all you talented people!

Play Grid Connect Here!

I generally don't have much time to utilize during the jam, but after two previous attempts I've managed to whittle down the scope of my games.

Although the game is not as finished as I would like (no audio), I'm proud to say I've out done myself compared to previous attempts and I look forward playing everyone's entries and also competing in LD40.

Cheers!

EFSSF - Post Mortem

Hi all!

It has been a few days now and I feel I have enough perspective and feedback to write this now.

In short, everyone loves the look, sound and feel of the games atmosphere, but the gameplay is just too frustrating due to the handling and physics of the batteries.

I intend to overhaul this system and make a post jam version, but for now, here are my thoughts on the game. IF you would like to play my game, please find it here - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/escape-from-solar-sea-fortress

Audio Importance I am really happy with the audio I managed to make in the time I had. I visited my parents who are an hour away to see my sister who lives far away and doesn't get to come visit us enough. On the way there and back in the car I was able to compose music and sleep so I wasn't burning too much time and there was another benefit. My parents live near Penton Hook Lock, so we went for a walk and I was able to record rushing water and wind ambiance for the top and bottom of the tower. I used the washing machine at our house, a creaky drum stool and some latches on doors to make the rest of the effects. I was really happy with the creaking of the hanging boat and the unfolding of the solar blades. I did the solar blades by stroking a knife across a surface and then layering it and reversing it.

image.png

Physics issues The big downer on the game was the handling of the physics. I had two options to fix an issue with the game. The player could push the batteries through walls and lose them forever and get stuck in the game. I either let them clip through walls OR have them drop when they collide in the players hand. The second option allowed the game to be at least 100% completed and not cause any blocking issues, so I chose that. I later discovered that people on slower machines would have even more issues as just simply moving was triggering collisions on frame-out somehow. Good to know for future, but not soon enough to save this.

Empty floors As I ran out of time, the last two floors were empty. I hoped they would feel like a pre-cursor to the escape and almost book-end the experience, but a few players commented on their barren nature so I think I failed there. In hindsight, if I had made the floors all the same size OR had made them square, I would have saved so much time. As it stood, I needed to place each wall individually and each panel and pillar. The last two floors I actually deleted and copy and pasted the above floors below. This gave the tower a bit more of an interesting shape as initially the lower floors were all large and shrinking up to the top.

SOmewhatBaron.PNG

Darkness/puzzles The initial concept for me was about trading light for progress. The batteries light the way but must be used up to move forward. This fell apart in the closing stages of the jam but I think it was at least a good direction to try. My big set piece puzzle was abandoned in the closing stages. There were supposed to be a circular maze of concentric walls with sections that rotated to allow you through. Placing batteries through this maze would activate the rotation of individual sections so you could reach the end and release the boat. Ran out of time to make this work OR fun and in my initial tests found it was too easy to get stuck and lose a battery. Ended up walling it off and placing all three batteries outside and then hiding the boat switch PAST the batteries. It was OK but not what I had hoped for.

Shadow of light I was very happy with the shapes of the shadows coming from the battery. I actually made it randomly set the rotation when you picked up the battery so that the shadows would vary each time. I really like it when the battery moves in the holder or rolls on the floor as the shapes really bring the environment to life.

ScreenShot2.png

Base Pieces The tower was made out of very few pieces. 1 Set of stairs 1 Floor (cut and scaled) 1 Arch 1 Pillar 2 Panels with shapes cut through 1 Filler block

AssetStrip.PNG

I scaled, rotated and flipped the panels to create variety and build each floor by hand, copying and pasting each element. This gave the tower a wonky/individual feel that I like, but the effort may not have been worth the effect.

Circular theme The reason I stuck so closely to the circular tower was that it was an image in my head that I could not shake. It also seemed to fit with the flow of a circular theme. The sun, solar panels, round batteries and round tower. Plus the cyclic nature of the story/ending and the feeling of going around and being trapped really solidified it together for me. As I played the final version through after submission, I found bugs that were quick fixes etc, but my biggest discovery was all the subliminal themes that came to mind as I finished the game. I thought of Bioshock and the Truman show and being trapped in a surreal metaphor mind state and realised that keeping the game fairly sparse and without putting in specific narrative text or hints allowed the game to really breathe and be open for interpretation. The name was the final point on this. Calling it "Escape from Solar Sea Fortress" really spelled out to the player what the game was without needing intro text or objectives. Escape - Obviously you need to get out. That is your goal. Maybe you are trapped? maybe you are in danger? Solar - Calling out that the charging system in the game used the sun Sea - At the beginning you might not notice where the tower is located due to the fogging (needed for the end sequence) so this set the scene Fortress - This was a late addition and only came to mind when I saw the tower standing. I called it a tower for the majority of development but in speaking to friends, we came up with a silly name, "the fortress or solartude" which made me laugh, but also stuck the term fortress in my head.

Final thoughts In closing, I am glad everyone likes the style and atmosphere, am frustrated I couldn't fix the batteries in time and will definitely be making a post-jam fixed version. Actually started recommending that people watch the walkthrough video if they get too frustrated, rather than pushing on.. as it only gets worse!

Thank you everyone for the feedback and support. See you next time! I am off to play and rate some games

Finally beat my game

Wave39.jpg

Here's the game at wave 39, with all power generators activated. I didn't manage to playtest my game fully so wasn't sure if this "win condition" was achievable but glad that I proved that the game was somewhat beatable. Past wave 30 the game gets boring though.

We would like to have some more feedback!

After an astroid wrecks your spaceship you have to get to your escape pod to evade the gravitational pull of a nearby planet. But the energy reserves are down ! Collect the power packs to start up the escape pod and prevent your impending doom. Beware: Jumping and using your Jetpack needs energy too, so do not run out of power.

You can download our game here: https://rac-games.itch.io/dono

It was alot of fun and we see a great improvement compared to our first entry. We would greatly appreciate your feedback :-) Made from scratch, all models self-made, all music and sounds self-made, used professional mocap data for rigged models.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS BY THE DEVELOPERS:

This game is hard by gamejam standards. We were aiming for a Megaman-like difficulty level. Due to lack of playtesting we overshot a little bit.

CONTROLS:

You can use WASD or arrow key to run. Jump with SPACE. Jetpack hover with Mousebutton or CTRL. Using Jetpack and then Jump results in a boostet jump. You can also use a gamepad.

HOW IT WENT:

So our team of 5 took off to design a “jump and run”-game. Because last time we did a tower defence which lacked story to 100%, we aimed to make our game more complete. So we planed a small story, an intro and outro scene, a tutorial stage, a player hub and several levels. We achieved most of it except for additional levels so we are quite happy with the result. All of us being hobbyists level design and balancing took to long. Costing almost all sleep in the progress (most of us slept less than 10 hours in these 3 days). 8 Minutes before end of the competition we finished postprocessing and uploaded the whole thing. But more on that in our postmortem post. We would love anyone to try our game and comment what they thought of it.

Lost in Translation at Space

Hi everyone! I'm so happy to had participated in my second LDJam with the amazing team integrated by @elmismopancho, @mrtwister, @mspawa and me, @ignius. We are so proud because we were able to take a big and hard idea and made it possible in two days. Speaking about my job, the art, I'm happy with the result, we wanted to give to the game the feeling and romanticism of the old cartoons with which everyone grew up (and not too old, like Ren & Stimpy) I know there are some many things to be fixed in the art but I hope to make it possible soon. I hope you like it and enjoy the game

Hi everyone! I'm so glad to show you my first videogame (and obviously my first LD entry) EVER! :) Of course I was just a part of a team of very talented game developers, so that's the real reason that the game really works xD It was programmed by @elmismopancho and @mrtwister and all the game art was made by @ignius (<3). I made the script and tested it, but all with A LOT of help of the rest of the crewmen :P I'm very happy and proud of this experience, and I really hope you enjoy our game!!

I finished fixing the bugs in my game entry, go check it out!

Pure Sense of Power

Some people has already commented on our game, that they do not get the idea. I could agree, may be it was not that much superficial. Basically it supports the concept of POWER first introduced by post-modernist and post-structuralist philosopher Michel Foucault. In general it is about penal system and system of European power from its start in the modern civilization. According to it, so to say, places of enclosure, such as prisons and factories, keep people under control. Therefore, it is easier for governmental structures to rule, to gain more power and keep folks obedient, with the help of these places.

By sliding the percentage of indicators, YOU may decide whether the demography or workers or children at schools or prisoners are controlled more or less. YOU can become a cruel master of this world or you can be kind and lose the POWER. YOU DECIDE!

RADARjAM

Great games everyone! I've been playing a lot and there are a ton of good entries this time around, especially with a theme this good. This is the first jam that I've completed alone, so I hope to hear all kinds of feedback. radar_jam.gif

RADARjAM is a top down shooter, where you try to kill as many enemies as possible with the assistance of your sonar. Your charge is the most important thing! It controls every aspect of the game. Use it wisely!

I hope to hear more comments in the coming days, and to everyone, good luck! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/radarjam

("game" in game) === true

If you already played our Galvanica entry, you might notice that some dialogs contain minigames - small games inside big game. We added them to diversify gameplay a bit and found that it was good idea. minigame1.gif minigame3.gif

Each minigame is very simple, so we didn’t use game engine’s capabilities to create them (except key pressing detection). For each of them we just draw pixels over relatively small canvas. So that was an interesting challenge inside a challenge - creating playable piece of…code with just plain old HTML5 canvas. And insert it inside Phaser.js game 😃

Here is «catch the container» minigame. minigame2.gif And here is how its code looks like - pretty small, I think. Listing.png

So this is how they done. Good luck and remember - potatoes are rich in calories, don’t hesitate to throw it into furnace!

Fun

I’m someone who has clocked way to many hours in Sim City and Transport Tycoon. I love management and building games. I also like clicker games so my barometer for fun may be a bit skewed. I like my game for some simple ideas and the potential I see in it but I can sympathies with the sentiment that this game is not fun. I think having a better UI, maybe with bars instead of number, would make information easier to digest and reduce the learning curve. Maybe by adding a better tutorial, the gist of the game would be better understood.

Theme

The “running out of power” theme may be my favorite Ludum Dare theme so far. I like all they directions that it can be taken.

Graphics

The solar panel is a really recognizable shape so even my simple boxy version of it look quite good. I used the tree object that comes in Unity to build my trees. I feel like I need to learn how to better utilize this tool.

Audio

This part I had a lot of fun with. I recorded myself playing my harmonica for the main music and game over screen. I may have put a bit too much time into this endeavor as I didn’t make button clicking sound or any other sound effects for all the actions in the game. Time management is still an aspect of game jamming that I can get better at.

Post Jam Ideas (stuff removed to mitigate scope creep)

As you buy land your purchases affect the value of the land around. The more developed the land the higher its value, pushing up the value of the land around it. Having cities on the map that would expand and eat up land as they grow. This would add an element of competition with cities for land. Expand the choices for building, for example having a solar boiler that would have production tied to the number of plot around it that are mirrors.

In the mood for a local Co Op? Check out Dwarf Power!

Seeing our first Ludum Dare game reach scoring status has inspired me to fix some of the quirks!

  • Game pace slightly increased.
  • WereRabbits! They will bite the first dwarf they can get their evil paws on! (Helping with the balancing issue if one player gets ahead and stays ahead)
  • Remove UI for Player 2 when playing alone.

A Few of My Favorites So Far

Hi all! I'm having a great time playing everyone's games. I'm always stoked to check out the originality on display in the LD submissions.

First chunk of feedback...

So a couple of people have played Oil Patrol now and there's a lot of similar feedback - which is great! It's definitely actionable. A lot of people missed the fact that you can charge your attacks and I've had a bunch of complaints at the length. With so few mechanics, the game can outstay it's welcome - I was aware of this, I just ran out of time to pace and balance the experience.

Another piece of feedback I've had a couple of time was about my lack of screenshots on the game page - I have now remedied this. Behold the lack of variety!

Rock on Jammers!

Last Job (How to play it!)

title.png

In the last days we have already received a lot of feedback about our game (thank you for that guys!) but a lot of people told us that they didn't understand pretty well how to play it properly. Because of that we have decided to make this short guide about how our game works.

Last Job entry: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/last-job

The goal of the game

This is a survival game and your final score correspond to the time you have survived. In order to stay alive, you have to keep the boilers on by throwing coal into them as quick as possible.

How to do it?

It is easy, let's me explain it in three simple steps.

  • Pick coal up from the pile in the center of the room. Just get near the pile and press "E" repeatedly to make the goblin pick coal units. The goblin can carry a maximum of 10 units (But be careful! The more units you carry, the slower you'll move!).

  • Throw the coal into the boilers by approaching them and repeatedly pressing "E". You will have to wisely distribute the coal among all the boilers so they don't turn off.

  • Keep doing that until the coal pile is empty. Then you have to use the lever to ask for more coal and it will drop in the middle of the room making a new pile.

You have to repeat this as fast as possible. You can see an example of this in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPpHHskbaZY

The power-ups

Each 20 seconds a power-up will drop, helping you with your tasks. Those power-ups (and their effects) are the following:

items.png

The boss

The boss will come if two or more boilers are completely turned off. If that happens you have to be quick and turn them on again as fast as possible because if there are at least four of them turned on it will leave the room again and you'll be safe.

If the boss catches you, the game is over :(

And that's it! I think it is pretty simple when it is correctly explained. I hope it helps you to enjoy it in the way we designed it to be enjoyed!

Important!!: As we want to continue working in this game after LD39 and improve this idea as much as possible, all the feedback you can give us is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time!

:yum:

Need Ratings

Hey guys, I'm really thankful for all of the positive feedback I've been getting on Hypersquare, though I'm still about 9 ratings shy of 20. I'd really appreciate it if you could take the time to review my game. Here's some screenshots: Desktop 07.31.2017 - 19.11.05.01.png Desktop 07.31.2017 - 19.11.19.02.png Desktop 07.31.2017 - 19.12.07.04.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/hypersquare

Of course, if you also need ratings feel free to leave a link to your own game in the comments. Thanks in advance!

Sensory Post-Mortem Part 2:

Starting off, a quick pitch, Sensory is a game where you must choose which sensors to power in order to make it through an environment without running out of power or taking too much damage. If you have not done so, I recommend playing the game first before proceeding with with this post as discovery is a significant portion of the game.

This is my 4th ludum dare attempt and 3rd submission, and I’m quite happy with how this entry has turned out. This post was is over the design process of the game, to see the previous post over previous Ludum Dare lessons applied, click here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/sensory/sensory-post-mortem-part-1

Initial Concept:

I did not go into this LD with any initial idea of what I was doing, so I started clean with the theme. My starting off point for running out of power was that you’re a robot. I asked myself the question what would a robot do in a situation where they were running out of power, or operating under very limited resources. I’ve had some experience programming an RC car to navigate a maze using sensors, so my thoughts went to the need to power sensors. This lead to the idea of using sensors sparingly to get an idea of the world, and then extrapolating or reasoning from there. This laid the basis for the game concept.

Jam outline:

I planned out several sensors and then ordered them in how I thought I could make interesting interactions for the player. I then implemented them in that order until I ran out of time under a self-imposed timeline. My plan was then to combine all of the sensors I had used into a few final levels to try and tie the game together.

Key design decisions:

I made a few key design decisions throughout the process that I feel are crucial to the design of the game.

No real tutorial:

This one is more of a personal preference and also a self-imposed design challenge. I don’t have a particular disdain for tutorials, but I wanted a key part of the game to be about discovery and I wanted to try and design the game in such a way that the player can fairly understand how it works without me directly spelling it out for them. After playtesting I did decide on adding a small kinda tutorial on the first command screen.

Slow movement:

The movement speed actually came out of playtesting. With a faster movement speed people often stumbled in and out of hazards with much less of an idea of what was going on. Based on current feedback, I have a feeling I may have overdone the slow speed, and have some ideas for future iterations to help smooth out this experience.

Sound traps:

These were/are my hardest design hurdle. Players aren’t used to avoiding something based solely on sound, and communicating this mechanic is something I’m still working on. My biggest change that helped this come across so far, based on some friend playtesting, was the addition of some small geometry on the walls to indicate the location of the trap, as just the heat signatures alone were not enough.

Another sound change that came out of playtesting was the moving platforms. Before they always made a sound and you had to use a combination of the sonar and sound to figure out when you could step on them. This was way too much of a challenge for such a simple mechanic. In response I changed the platform audio to make a switch noise and then cut off the audio when not moving. After this change I have not seen anyone miss the platform while using the audio.

That’s it for now. If I have time I’ll write a third post over the sonar effect as I’ve had some questions on how I went about implementing it. Thanks for reading.

The possible future of And Here Again

Here's what I think for the future of "And Here Again", because I see Ludum Dare not as a place to create games that died after the event, but rather a place where we can start ideas that can expand. I thought that way while developing my first game for LD39.
