Ludum Dare 37 December 9–12, 2016

Ahh like the old days

Like all times, this time didn’t go well either. So I got a concept! And some mechanics, but not a game. But that’s okay, I have an awesome idea that I’ve actually gotten started with, so I will finish that, in due time, but not for the Jam. Oh well, have fun y’all!

update-140-wtf-140

So today has been mostly trying to implement things that I’ve run into solutions for in pico8 (shifts… grr) and now math (not my strong suit) and still not really anything on the theme other than “we’ll shoehorn it in somehow” (right now I have a guy named Dr. One Room.)

The good thing is this will totally work for a jrpg/roguelike/rpg/thing and I’ll just keep at that, rather than trying to shoehorn it into the theme.

So back at it.

3D stuff is done, let’s polish with sound and VFX!

We’re doing good, all the 3D models are done, and we only have 1 texture left to do, the game is playable in a rough version, and we have still more than 24 hours to go! So now it’s time to polish, and add musics, sound design and VFX!

Finished what I can.

My entry for Ludum Dare 37 Compo: Kak Yah Nasi Lemak.

I finished what I can. I don’t have time to make a BGM (and it’s 3AM right now), so the game doesn’t have one.

If there’s anything I learned from the development process, it’s that I should consider the amount of assets I have to make (I think I had to make around 20).

Check out my game here, and feel free to vote whatever you think suits the game (once the voting session starts). Also feel free to add comments.

Post mortem

Decided not to continue with my game this morning! Shame as I was keen to experience the new ldjam.com features.

What went well:

  • Came up with idea much earlier than usual. Usually I agonise for hours before making any real progress.
  • Sketched screen layouts on paper to get them right first time.
  • Sketched out path through the game to reach win state before writing any code. I quickly realised what was in my head was way too complex, leading me to drastically simplify it (twice).

Not so well:

  • Lack of time: some planned and unplanned social events.
  • Lack of energy: recovering from an illness at the moment.
  • Concept depended heavily on full screen artwork: usually I do 16×16 or 32×32 basic pixel art and have little experience with anything larger.
  • Bit of time ramping up with Game Maker HTML5 + itch.io hosting (have used GM before heavily but was a little rusty; most entries have been Java based)
  • Critically, the concept got more boring the more I worked on it.
  • Overall as a result of all of the above, making it lacked the fun element & rapid sense of progress & reward I usually get.

Good luck to everybody still cracking on with their entries!

OK, I’ve got a game

…it is rough, but enough for now.

Let’s add some music and sound…

I’m done… sort of

Well, I’ve basicly run out of time. I really have to do some other stuff again now, so it’s a bit rough, but I hope it’s at least enjoyable.

Here’s the ludum dare page: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=21430

And here’s a direct link to the itch.io page: https://roel.itch.io/trapped

It’s currently not mobile-friendly, so I recommend you use a desktop or laptop (I might still fix it later).

Good luck to everyone still working!

Circlin’

Circlin’ has a simple concept. Hold left click to apply force and catch the circles by hitting them with your tail. Targets keep spawning with a fixed rate, so hurry up!

It ended up surprisingly enjoyable, even though I had no idea what I was going to make. I just wanted to learn Rust and what’d be a better way than LD? So, I picked up SDL2 and vim and started hacking. I have no expertise with graphics or audio (..or games in general), so you won’t see any of that here.

Check it out

Major Milestone Achieved

Behold my glorious Dijkstra pathfinding through a dynamic physics environment. Rainbow-colored slopes represent the shortest path from anywhere on the map to the player. There are no enemies yet to follow that path, that would be my next step. The mass of physics objects is added to the cost of the node, so sometimes the shortest path is through the object, so AIs will try to push it aside.

It is done.

I’m using all unity standard assets, I have stolen pictures of furniture from Ikea website, light maps are broken. But the game is done.

Still, as it’s gonna be a jam entry anyways, I might wait with publishing it till tomorrow. With some luck I won’t come back from work completely tired, and I’ll be able to do something with this stock unity car, and maybe I’ll record some 30 seconds music loop.

Try submitting form with minimum data (name, placeholder description) but no links nor screenshots (if it’s possible, I don’t remember). Then edit it to add additional stuff.

Same problem here.. I needed to encode where I didn’t use FormData and just had only one option with body:”var1=encodeURIComponent(val1)&var2=encodeURIComponent(val2)…”

IDK if this is your issue yet I was in a similar situation where I had a working old fashioned style ask for I needed in fetch.

First Room done!

I’ll have different versions of the same room, with each room telling you something else about the person who lives here.

The first nature-themed room is done now :) With sound & music!

You can follow the further development on Twitter.

Writers’ Block

I was planning to do a Point-and-Click adventure where you try to escape…

I can’t do it. I don’t think it will have very interesting graphics, I don’t know how to execute the story.

I can’t even come up with a better idea. I was told I should do room based pong, but how does that work? Is the couch the paddle? What’s the ball?

I was also told to do a platforner, but how does that fit the theme? People said they couldn’t come up with ideas for Ancient Tech., but I could easily come up with an idea for that. This? I have  writers’ block.

Should I make a game around writers’ block? In the study room? Oh, great. I can’t come up with any ideas for that either.

I’ll try to slap something together by monday, but… uh… hm… er… uh… what?

What if I make a room in Unity. Then make a button that says “escape” would that work? How much detail should I put into the room? Should be a blank screen that has a button that says “escape”?

Ugh. Writers’ Block is the worst.

Can y’all pick a better theme next time? Like Underground? Or “The Rules Change as You Play”? Or Even “Small World” or “5 minutes”?

Day 2 – My Dear Pepe

Didn’t post anything on the 1st day, so here you go. Most of the stuff I did was under-the-hood stuff as I left scripting of game events to 3rd day.

Untitled

Dynamic lightning and sticky blood (stick to everything and stays there for a few seconds).

And Pepe.

hi

hello!

Day 2 finished with the thought of “….let’s make the worst game!”

Ludum Dare day 2 finished with a total work time of 5hours, 44 minutes, and 38.42 seconds….the game isn’t looking good…but at least I’m making you-know-who proud with this type of bad “file management”!

Tomorrow shall be the last day so I’m hoping to make it run at least haha!
wall

Prisoner’s dilemma themed game

“Pick a number between 1 and 10. You’ll get that many points only if that number was selected by less than 20% of other prisoners”

Just pick a number. I had to start over 12 hours in, but I am quite happy with my thing. I finally made some non-terrible graphics and sounds for a game, so that is a success in itself for me. I mostly want to just see what the graphs will look like after hopefully several hundred plays.

Physics is hard

This is my first time making a game in Javascript, created with Phaser. Doesn’t look too bad so far.

Upwards alpha

The tiling was kind of a pain. Phaser has a built-in Tiled map reader, but there is no way to move the tiles around, so I had to manually display the tiles and stitch the collision of adjacent tiles together so you won’t get caught on the walls.

The good news is, wall-jumping works perfectly!
