Important Announcement

Hello

I have arrived to share with you an important announcement. I will be participating in Ludum Dare 55

I will be using Unity, Aseprite, Audacity, Famitracker, notepad+, a lot of pringles, and some monster energy.

For this jam I'll be working solo for my first attempt at compo (my team is AFK :( it is what it is). This means nobody can stop me from involving giraffes.

Thank you for reading this important announcement.

What Will You Be Summoning?

Summoning is pretty far ahead in the poll. Of course that's no guarantee of anything but if it wins, do you know what you'll make yet?

Last minute composer recruiting

If you saw this 10 minutes ago, I apologize, second and last time we post this.

Hello jammers,

Me and my bud are still looking for a composer for this jam, given that we are both awful at it and our usual options are busy. If you know of one or are one, feel free to comment or shoot a message!

You can check out our previous entries to see if you think we could be an okay fit / have the potential to work with each other, and if you are interested, hit me up on here or on discord at Peringo#6049! I usually have a certain style of music in mind depending on the idea, so depending on if you like that bit of direction or not we could work something out.

Thanks for the read, I hope everyone has a great jam!

I'm in!!

If you saw this the first time, sorry, ldjam.com problems.

This will be my very first game jam, so we'll see how it goes!

10 in a row!

Bonk Group is back for our tenth Ludum Dare (+ Lots of other jams ^^, but LD is best 🙏). We started at LD46 and haven't stopped since, this time we will be trying out making a game in Godot (for the first time, wish us luck!)

Anyways, good luck to you all, we will cheer you on! Mink-Cheer.png

If you are still reading, we'd love to hear some bad jokes while we count down for the jam reveal ^^

First timer :)

As per title! If I can get something working I'll call it a win. Good luck!

Help, please

for some reason, I can't see my own posts. I don't know if these posts were even created, but then again, I'm not sure. just comment the solution, I guess.

ADVICE FOR NEWCOMERS (REPOST/UPDATED FOR LD55)

I've participated several times, so I like to share my experience and gained knowledge with new jammers.

Get started early

In the jam, you're allowed to start with any base code. So, make anything you can. I keep packages with basic features that have nothing to do with the theme, like pause/restart buttons. I'll likely make a git repo of my base Godot project to update occassionally with various quality-of-life inclusions. During final round for theme selection, look them over and come up with ideas for each potential theme. See if you can think of ideas that will work with more that one.

Scope your game properly

You have three days to make a game? Try to design something you can make in only one. It'll take twice as long as you think, so you'll actually finish it in two days. The final day is for bug testing and polish. If you manage to finish everything WAY early, you can expand on the completed game. It's better than rushing or running out of time. This is personally a big flaw of mine, I've run out of time on some jams for being too ambitious.

Be healthy

Get sleep. Eat three meals a day. Spend time with your family. Staying awake for 72 hours isn't going to make your game good, and it's definitely not good for your well-being.

Easy games are appreciated

Jammers will play your game for a minute or two, vote, and move on. Make games that can be played in their entirety in a short time, or at least will show the player all it has to offer.

Small teams are okay

My best games were made by myself or with one other person. Too many developers just get in each other's way. If you have a large team, might want to consider splitting into smaller teams. Especially if team member share skillsets.

Accept and embrace criticism

Some people get defensive, but it's really not fun or helpful. Some jammers are afraid of being critical, fearing retaliatory bad votes. Critical feedback is the most honest and most helpful. Always remember, it isn't the player that doesn't understand your game, it's that you didn't understand your player.

Make a web build

It's the easiest way for jammers to experience your game for rating/reviewing, and that's the most important. People who aren't using specific OSes, or who just don't want to download hundreds of new games that they'll play once, will be very appreciative. You can still make downloadable builds as well, but at a minimum a web build should be made when possible. Us Mac/Linux users certainly appreciate jammers who don't make Windows-exclusives.

Simplified controls

It's actually a bit surprising to me how many jammers don't have gamepads for their PCs, but we all have keyboards and mice. You should make your games at least playable with just those, and as simple/intuitive as possible. Pay attention to regular conventions, having to switch from WASD to arrow keys between games really interrupts the flow of rushing through many games. It's pretty easy to have your game controllable with both.

You have to play games, too

You aren't even in the ranking unless at least 20 people vote on your game. The best way to get voters on your game is to play, vote, and comment on other people's games. I make it a point to play the games of everyone who comments on mine to start. Then I'll go through the comments of those peoples games.

Misc stuff picked up from other jammers

@lintfordpickle just made a post about how he likes to clean and tidy up his workspace before the jam. That actually sounds like a very good idea. A decluttered workspace promotes a decluttered mind, and a declutterled mind works better on a time crunch (like in a game jam)

Back in the Saddle Again...

keyboardcowboys.jpg

The rumor come out! The Keyboard Cowboys does is participating in Ludum Dare 55!

We'll be streaming our nonsense all weekend, so feel free to tune in and witness us descend into madness!

I'm in

Running on new hardware (Thanks, Tribes 3) but the usual toolset... Unity, and whatever I need from the toolbelt, Audacity, FLStudio, Aseprite, Blockbench, Blender. And my base "starter code" https://github.com/pckenney/ScrambleKit which is mostly useful for the FX system and the extension methods on rigidbody2d.

Not really sure what I'm interested, so limited preconceived notions this time. Will let the theme guide me I guess!

Good luck, everyone.

Final Round

I believe these topics should be creative.

A LD Tradition

something of a tradition of mine before any LD is to clean up my desk of clutter and generally tidy the place up, ready for the weekend. Anybody else like to start with a clean setup?

We're in

We're in. For our 6th consecutive dare. It almost didn't happen. With me having surgery last Friday and still recovering and @Pegasys being unable to get Monday off work. But we're still determined to make something even if the scope has to be way smaller this time. Fingers crossed for Summoning or pick your poison.

I am in

This is my first game jam. I will focus all my braincells into coming up with the most bizarre ideas and hopefully making a fun game.

I have travelled far for this one...

I have driven a good friend of mine from where we live in the south of england, all the way up to the lake district to jam in a house with two other close friends! :D

I am in, this is my post now that I am all set up and ready to go.

Here is my setting for the weekend. setup.jpg

I am going to get a few hours sleep and then will be up for the announcement and an initial attempt to get something going.

Good luck everyone!
