Send me horror games!

I feel like playing some horror today, so send me horror submissions to LD55!

And check out my game about running your little dark cafe if you have time :)

If you can't pay the fine, don't do the crime!

ldjam55_2.gif

Play 'Bail Out!' (web browser version + stand-alone binaries available).

Play as a skateboarder who has been summoned to make an appearance at court before noon and pay a fine for the "crime" of skateboarding. Except you don’t have any money and noon is only 2 minutes away! Skateboard around the city gathering as much loose change as you can find and make it to the courthouse in time. Just don’t get caught by the cops!

6376f.png Hey guys! After dropping out of Compo I managed to releas in time for the Jam entries

I haven't made a game in almost 10 years, and I know it's very barebone, but I feel happy and I really enjoyed the jam!

Please give it a try and rate it if you fancy to  https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/guitar-of-the-undead

Good job everyone

Good job everyone on the Game Jam! This was my first experience with any game jam and it was really fun! Learned a lot about GMS2 in the last 3 days. I definitely got lucky with my team and I would not have been able to create the same game without them ^^

Faemori

Come give our game a go here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/faemori

"You are a Fae Caller from the forest village of Mori. As a rite of passage you have been sent into the deep wilds to prove your worth. Can you summon and command your minions to face the trial of the Fae Queen in this rogue-like auto-battler?"

Game about summoning Maids to help yourself

I am new to this gamejam and it was interesting enough for me to make a game here.

melissa.gif

I really love maids and I couldn't resist adding them here as well. When I saw the theme "Summoning" - I immediately realized that most of the game would be magic or wizards based. So I was like: "What if i make a game where you have to summon your clones to pass levels?". So I took one of the plots that were written in a dreamlike delirium as a basis.

You can try game by yourself (Windows only)

TANKZ is out now - a visual post-mortem!

tankz-header-ld-3.gif

We did it! After a very long day, broken builds and adding audio at the last minute (will we ever learn) we finally released TANKZ!

:joystick: Play TANKZ here!

Combat-first prototype

We started out with a clear idea of making something that felt a bit like "Thronefall" - but we also really like tanks. You can see how we ended up with TANKZ.

GREYBOX PROTOTYPE

This first version of the game allowed us to: * Control the tank and auto-shoot at enemies * Build buildings (that did nothing)

Greybox prototype | Not-so-greybox prototype :-------------------------:|:-------------------------: early-combat-01.gif | enemies-later.gif

Designing the tanks

The tank - In Blender | The tank - In Unity (with modular upgrades!) :-------------------------:|:-------------------------: tank-blender.png | image (23).png

MAKING OF THE CHUNKY WOBBLY TANK

We wanted to to make a game with chunky wobbly tanks shooting at each other, so a lot of time was spent designing them. We made them taller than they are wide and long so when animated with physics they really look like they're about to tilt over, which we thought was really fun. We also put a lot of effort in making shaders, materials and textures so that everything fit well together in this warm beach environment.

3 LESSONS LEARNED

  • Build your game with a game controller in your hands from the start - makes playtesting it on yourself fast and feels like a nice break
  • Physics is always a balance and potential timesink - it worked out well for us on the player tank, but for enemies we spent too much time trying to make physics work, and actually ended up scrapping it to make the deadline.
  • Make sure your build pipeline works early (we had problems, ended up setting us back a bit)

TANKZ for reading, we hope you'll play our game! :joystick:

Summoner Kit Simulator

Hello everyone, We've managed to get our game out in three days without any crunches and with a great team spirit. It's with great pride that I present to you the game we've made over the past three days. In this game, you take on the role of an apprentice sorcerer who must assemble a kaiju modal kit before summoning it. I hope you'll enjoy building this little kaiju as much as we enjoyed creating it. Enjoy the game!

Are you tired of the mundane, the ordinary, the utterly vanilla existence? Do you yearn for a dash of danger, a pinch of peril, and a sprinkle of sorcery in your life? Look no further, for great warlock Grishnek is here to spice up your daily routine!

Picture this: a dark, ominous castle perched atop a mountain peak, lightning crackling in the sky, and the faint scent of brimstone in the air. That’s where you’ll find Grishnek, brewing his nefarious plans and conjuring unspeakable horrors from the depths of the abyss.

But wait, there’s more! Grishnek needs YOU to assist in the summoning of an evil entity so malevolent, it makes your mother-in-law look like a fluffy bunny. Yes, YOU! Whether you’re a seasoned sorcerer or just a humble peasant with a knack for trouble, your skills are needed to bring forth this wicked being and wreak havoc upon the land.

My fourth game jam, DONE!

Screenshot 2024-04-16 004733.png

Orion is my game about forming star constellations to summon minions to fight for you! It was my most ambitious entry so far, and using an engine I haven't used for a game jam before (what could go wrong?)! I ran out of time to add some key features and polish, but happy with what I achieved on my own in 72hr.

If you're interested in the concept, try it (no download required)!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/orion

Great job everyone! My thoughts on this experience

Good day everyone, I wanted to share my experience during this game jam. I had not participated in a jam in about a decade. During that time I have been working as a developer in various studios where I got very used to working with a team full of people from different disciplines. Due to this I wasn't used to build a game on my own, and I sadly was not able to finish in time.

My biggest issue was the fact that I wasted a lot of time on topics that were not relevant in the current context, such as:

  1. Best coding practices - The most important thing is that your features work, period, you can come back later and optimize or organize your code, but one should not waste time making sure everything is up to a certain standard.
  2. Polishing details - It's ok if your assets don't have those fancy particle effects, or if your textures look like MS Paint scribbles, as long as they can be distinguished in-game that is more than enough.
  3. Game design - Keeping the scope relatively small is crucial. A small idea may lead to various features, so one should only implement those that will allow you to finish your main game loop.

I know the aforementioned points may be obvious to a lot of people, but maybe there are others out there like me who weren't able to finish because they also fell into similar rabbit holes. As always "live and learn", I had a lot of fun, and I want to congratulate every single person that published their games, great work!

See you all in the next one!

Summon thy weapon, Sir Lancelittle!

The gamejam finally came to a close but what a great weekend it was. It is so much fun to see all your games and seeing what creativity there is in this community.

The main win of this gamejam is creating and (sort of) finishing our own game. Sir Lancelittle is a game that my team and myself keep coming back to because we actually like playing the game we made. The progress my team and I were able to make throughout the jam was more steadily than we have expected and we managed to reach our daily goals on all three days. To get a feel of the game see the gifs below (or play it yourself!)

62040.gif 62055.gif

Sir Lancelittle is the type of game we all like playing. There's deckbuilding, action and roguelike elements. Of course we weren't able to completely implement all the features we wanted to add, but our general idea of the game is clearly visible. Things we wanted to add but didn't because of scoping include: * More actual deckbuilding options, like removing cards, upgrading cards * More different feeling weapons and effects * Power cards (i.e. your next attack deals 2x dmg) * Usable items * An actual shop with items to buy * Actual roguelite elements to make every run feel more different * Classes (start with only swords, only magic, mix, different) * (Even) more game juice, particles * Adding EVEN more fun sound effect * More enemies, bosses, etc.

If you want to make Sir Lancelittle summon some weapons, you can find the game at ldjam or on Itch.io

Thanks for all your feedback and support and congrats to anyone who published a game themselves!

Good luck and have fun everyone ^^

Post Mortem

After my very first jam last weekend, I have mixed feelings:

1) I am very relieved it is over as the intensity of the very limited time drained me both emotionally and physically.

2) I feel very proud of our game and my part in it (graphics + audio design + 50% game design) and I have inspiration to keep on designing it further afterwards.

Rough start, difficulties and a good boost with an eye on the future!

IMG_0757 2png.png

My team and I have long wanted to participate in a game jam, and especially in Ludum Dare. But it was difficult to find time. This time we agreed much in advance and cleared the plans so that nothing would interfere... And it began!
One boss calls him to work on Sunday. Another person has problems with a girl and she urgently needs help...

But it was still a very interesting experience. We are glad we participate. And we are glad to see so many wonderful works of other developers.

We tried to implement an unusual idea. Alas, a lot has not yet been done. And the project is still "raw".

Naturally, it doesn't end there. And we plan to correct the project so that it becomes the way we planned to show it to you. Wish us luck. And we wish you good luck, friends!

Summoning was a difficult theme

We weren't too happy with the theme initially, but honestly, it was incredibly fun by the end.

Of course a lot of games would be about demons/pentagrams/etc. but I think it's good to just lean into that hard sometimes. Also love to see the original ideas everyone came up with during the jam.

Here's a little shameless plug of our game. Enjoy!

Turgore

coverArt2_FINAL.png

This ludum dare was very chaotic, more chaotic than the previous one and rushed, but even though the game was simple, I really enjoyed working on it, although as always I make more songs than necessary because I'm excited and they don't end being used. I also want to highlight to people, even if your game isn't much, you can improve it in the future, the important thing is to participate and show that you did something, I wanted to thank everyone in my group for participating in this ludum dare. but that's all I wanted to say, I'm not one to write long texts (despite being a writer), good luck to everyone with your games

Summons Racer

So after almost giving up after seeing what the theme of the weekend was, my youngest son came through with some good ideas about one of my original thoughts of delivering court summons to people.

The result, a side scrolling car racing game.

Summons Racer

2024-04-16_08-01-26.png

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/summons-racer

You have to deliver 4 summons per day for 7 days and earn $$$ and XP along the way.

The game was a lot of fun to make, and I am thankful that we have resources out there like Kenny.nl for assets. I wanted to add more to the game (using $$ for upgrade, earning XP for higher bonus and different types of deliveries) but ran out of time. Such is the Ludum way . . .

At any rate, please give it a try and let me know what you think.

I am looking forward to playing my share of entries as well.

Good Luck to everyone who submitted.

微信图片_20240415204315.png

In anime works, the best way to summon a hero from another world seems to be arranging for a large truck to hit the person in the real world. This is indeed a humorous but also common plot device, and we've chosen this summoning method for our theme this time. In the game, you need to select the right person to hit and also watch out for obstacles. It's a very funny game (we even included "professional voice acting" in the game), and I hope you can come and play it. :raised_hand:

Bean & Brew : A summon-platformer.

Thumbnail.png

It was a lot of fun to work on Bean & Brew.

Using summons as a way to navigate a platformer really takes an genre that's well explored and gives it a bit of new life, by twisting the way common actions like 'jumping' and 'dashing' are used. By making 'jumping' and 'dashing' an actual entity with a delay, and attached behaviour the platforming not just about timing after you jump or dash, but also how timing works before you jump or dash. It was a fun concept to explore and I had a lot of fun!

Have you heard the good word of state machines?

I was vaguely aware of the concept of a state machine before this jam but hadn't really seen the significance. A thing moves between different states? So what? But my collaborator @ruruie had their eye on it and pointed out that the mechanic in our game (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/witch-courtier) where the cursor is variously a wand, a paintbrush, painted different colours, etc., would be a perfect use case. This turned out to be a fantastic idea.

I followed the tutorial here: https://gdscript.com/solutions/godot-state-machine/ and pulled the logic managing entry, exit and behaviour for each cursor type into self-contained classes that the 'cursor' class could swap out as needed. What would previously have produced a byzantine, bloated and bug-prone mess of tracking variables and conditional branches split into a handful of easily manageable files. Whole new behaviours could be plugged easily into place. My only regret is I didn't use more of them and that I wasn't architecturally stricter once the pattern was laid down (I say that part after every jam).

If your code is full of conditionals, state variables and bloated classes, ask your doctor if state machines are right for you.

you're lucky if people even read play instructions, don't put five paragraphs of generic backstory vaguely related to the jam theme between them and the itch.io link

Anyone up for some deterministic fun?

I’ve beaten randomness this time, no random elements used at all! However, it turns out I made the game super hard 😬.

While I can't change it now (that would be unfair), I’ve added a post-compo feature: an analytics screen for everyone to see. Within this screen, there’s a button that allows you to start with the most powerful turret ever created in the released game. Just remember not to rate the game based on this.

Can you create a better one and help your fellow LDers? Here’s how the current champion looks: a group of 10 yellow and 4 blue powerups (non-groups are ignored, and yes, it exceeds the perceived limit of 10!):

An ambitious 3D Tower Defence game

During Ludum Dare 53, we decided to try making a 3D game for the first time. This was my fourth Ludum Dare. It ended up being a 3D game with a camera on two axis. Which in effect made it a 2D game with more depth.

So, for Ludum Dare 55, we decided to go all in and make a proper 3D game. And so, history was made and Crystal Defence was summoned into this world.

We tried to keep the scope low, and take it easy during this jam, considering my partner is expecting our first child in a week or two

I am beyond please with the result and how much we were able to do in a very short amount of time.

Please check it out, and please give us your hard honest feedback!

We did it

After some polishing, tests and deserved rest i'm glad to say: We did it! (Web build still in the progress :( ) This project was my first programmer-collaboration, so i'm infinite grateful @kndratova for this wild ride, what we did in the code is absolutely amazing.

Check out Demanager - our little game, where you are in a role as a demon summoner manager. Can you beat our best employee?

Send me your WebGL games - I'll do a video playthrough

The power supply on my PC exploded so I haven't got a windows machine right now, but if you have a game that works with WebGL and you want to see someone play through it, drop a link here! I'll try and play as many as possible, but can only do it after work in the evenings.

(I'll edit a video together, not live streaming)

A pixel shooter game?? Is this a joke?

In the 'Ghostlayer', you can level up by killing enemies around with a revolver. Also! You can cast spells and create cute allies for yourself when you've pumped enough! P.S. Beware of the red skeleton, ahah

Let me introduce you to Sheep Norris

Join the forces of sheeps devoted to the satanic Master of the Pack! It's in the middle of battle that you'll be able to summon one of your finest warrior, the giant Sheep Norris the fearless. He embodies the strength and power you'll need to attack, and will smash the celestial enemy forces in his path. Thanks to Sheepnorris your game can take an unexpected turn!💪

➡️ Discover S.H.E.E.P by playing directly from your browser (⌛ but be patient, it takes a while to load), or by downloading the packs provided.

Enjoy ! https://shenoit.itch.io/sheep

Fun fact

In our submission all enemies shoot projectiles, even melee enemies. It feels strange when you know about it, but in the end it works extremely well and doesn't hurt player experience. Unlike our menu setup...

Ludum Dare 55 Behind the Scene

Hey friends! A little behind the scene about how we created one of the asset of our game: God's Apprentice! We used the app Procreate on iPad to draw most of the game assets :)

Check out our new game: https://ldj.am/$385986 The game was made by 4 students aged 14-16 in our effort for our very first game jam. We know the game is quite incomplete but we wanted to upload it nevertheless. Feel free to leave feedback. This game was made in Godot 4.2.1 engine.

It's our first Ludum Dare, and we're excited to be a part of it!

We want to extend a massive thank you to everyone for the incredible support and warm feedback, especially regarding our art. The response from this community has been beyond amazing. Our artist @rogue-tomato is eager to share more animations with you all! Check them out below.

Summoning the Demonning !

Hi ! We wanted to thank all the people who played our game and gave us feedbacks ! You're all so nice, it's very encouraging ! We really liked creating our game even if we know it's not perfect. We couldn't work on it on the last day of the Jam so we only had two days but we're pretty proud of it ! We'll certainly try to participate to the next Ludum Dare !

Here is a concept I made at the beginning, and how it turned out at the end ! !

We had a blast making this game, feel free to try it out and try to reach the legendary S rank :)

Votre meal, madmoiselle

A hardware stew with extra broken glass, juste as vous requested. Bon appetit! Check out our game! It's my second game with this team and I'm just as proud as I was the last time we participated. Have a little sympathy for the blue collar summonees you're calling on in so many of these jam games, and learn what it's like to work as a poltergeist butler :)

Check this out - The Summoners Rift

Hey, I've finished my game and would like to get some feedback!

I'm sort of happy on how it came out and spend quite some time trying to get it to feel as right as possible.

It would be really wonderful if I'd get some notes on how this could be made better

You can find the game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/summoners-rift

I'm glad I participated in the jam for the first time

It was an interesting experience. I tried to do a kind of metroidvania strategy. Screenshot_306.png Not everything came out the way I planned, but overall the idea was conveyed. A little bit about displacement. walk-ezgif.com-video-to-gif-converter.gif What the battle looks like: battle-ezgif.com-video-to-gif-converter.gif

I will be glad to any feedback on the game : The wickedness

Drop in your Low Resource HTML/Linux games

I'm suffering some choice paralysis.

Do you have a game that'll run on a relatively ancient Linux machine? When I participate in jams, I work and rate on a laptop manufactured in 2012. (Best $15 I ever spent.) If you've got something with a native linux/HTML build that you think will run well on a 3rd-generation mobile i5 with integrated graphics, drop it in the comments, and I'll get to as many of them as time allows.
