LD27 August 23–26, 2013

First time for everything.

This will be my first (hopefully, not last) time entering the Jam. While I’ve made a few ‘games’ as part of university projects and such, this will be the first time where it’s no holds barred, do what you want in the time you have.
I’m no stranger to modelling and animation, though, as you can see on my Tumblr, but I don’t think it will matter much since I’ll most likely be coding my models, rather than modelling them.

Anyway, I wish everyone luck with their projects and hope to play some interesting games afterward.

Later!

Warm-up creation

I’ve always had a tough time wrapping my head around animation. It’s probably a very simple thing to most people here but for me it was tough thinking about cropping a tilesheet and upon key events moving a sprite while displaying the appropriate frames. I’ve finally pulled it off though and here’s the result:

pokiemon-v2-screenshot

The runnable jar file if anyone’s interested: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13662030/pokiemon-v2.jar
I’ll probably post a link to the source soon and might even create a tutorial however my implementation probably isn’t the smartest nor easiest way and I might just be the only one struggling with this.

My Third Dare!

I’ll be joining the fun again!

Got the whole weekend set aside, plus Jod will be joining me again too.  (not as a Jam, but two solo compo’s)

My tools:

What I want to do better:

  • Planning, or at least better time-management via limiting my idea
  • Dedicate time to add sound / music
  • Set aside more ‘playtest’ time
  • Pray for a good theme

I’m in

I’ll join this LD if I like the theme. I hope to make something for the OUYA this time, using Haxe/OpenFL.

Reporting in!

Praise the Sun! This is my first Ludum Dare and my 4th game jam overall. Gonna be making a game in Windows Presentation Foundation. Will try to make it about ponies if I can.

Language: C# and XAML
Framework: My own MVVM framework that I’ve named Crystal
Editor: Visual Studio 2012
Graphics: GIMP
Audio: dunno lol

Ponies? As in My Little Pony ponies? Also, nice hat you’ve got there.(not sarcasm)

I’m in again – update

Hello, My updated tools and basecode. For me, the best part of the “i’m in” posts is to discover new tools, frameworks, engines, etc. The more exotic, the better. Also, last Sunday I bought Reaper, a very nice and affordable DAW. With that I’ve eliminated good part of free audio software I used previously (Synthfont, LMMS, Seikaju, etc).

Here my updated tools:

– Language/Engine: C# with Unity and my basecode.
– Graphics: Photoshop Elements 10, GraphicsGaleSpriter, GIMPTexturePackerBlenderSketchup.
– Music/Audio: ReaperFinale Notepad (I can’t live without scores), BFXR.
– Timelapse: Chronolapse.
– Streaming: OBS, my Twitch channel.

Ludum Dare number 5!

I’m going to be participating this weekend in what will be my fifth compo. I’ll be using

  • My own pygame skeleton / framework thing that uses opengl for graphics, it’s up on github here
  • Renoise for music

I’ve completed an entry in each of the last four compos, so I think that means I’m not being ambitious enough! This time I’m hoping to try something a bit more crazy and unorthodox, hopefully following the hacking / cyberpunk styles I’ve enjoyed doing in my previous entries (provided that it fits with the theme of course).

Good luck everyone

I’m in – First Ludum Dare

I’m going to give it a go this weekend for the solo competition.

I hope i can complete the challenge and submit a finished game :)

I’ll be coding in javascript. I might use melonJS if it’s going to be tile based.
I’ll use photoshop for graphics,
And i’m not sure what i’m going to use for Audio yet…

I’m very excited, and sure it’s going to be fun!

Howdy, everybody~

Greetings from Raleigh, North Carolina! I kept telling myself that I’d do a Ludum Dare at some point, so here I am, ready for Challenge #27 this weekend!

My name’s Barry, and I’m a Ph.D. Student in Computer Science studying Computer Science Education. In addition to my research, I teach programming to pay the bills, and I’m currently developing a course to teach assembly programming – the catch is that this course teaches assembly for the Nintendo Entertainment System. I actually gave a workshop on this topic last week, and was terribly afraid that nobody would be interested in it, yet I had a pile of people attend not only the high-level intro, but the hard-core programming portion! This was super-validating, and now I can’t wait to teach my course! 😀

So for this Ludum Dare, whatever the theme may be, I will be developing an NES game in Assembly. I’ll be limiting myself to only 16 KB of PRG ROM and a single 512 x 256 pixel sprite sheet, so I’m expecting this to be a heck of a challenge. The idea is that by participating in this challenge, I’ll actually get some mastery making NES games before I try to teach students how to do it.

I’ll be tweeting my progress from @isharacomix, so if this piques your interest, I’ll be sharing demos and screenshots throughout the compo. :)

I recently have been working on a ‘warm up’ type game. and was restricting myself to 3 colors(total) and very limited other aspects as well. It can help you focus more on gameplay/fun value much more than trying to make it fun by making it eye candy pretty.

And here my Ludum Dare teammate was joking we should create a game in Assembly…

There isn’t some kind of ‘track’ button on this website is there? Would love to follow your progress on this (as I love Assembly even though I’m a complete newbie), but I don’t have a Twitter account!

Interesting!

3rd Time Lucky

I’m in again.

Java
Last time I created something that was pretty interesting technically, but had very little value as a game. This time I hope to make something fun.
In terms of resources, and depending on the design I end up going with, I may reuse generic basecode from last times entry: https://github.com/RootSecks/SimpleWorld-Src

IN is where I’ll be this weekend!

This is my 3rd Ludum Dare, so hopefully I will be able to crank out something with substance! I think I’d better do the jam, since I’ll be at a music rehearsal on Friday evening.

GOAL 1: Don’t get hung up over the theme! I’ve had trouble with that in the past, especially in my first LD (the . Whatever it turns out to be, I’ll roll with it and try not to find the perfect interpretation.

GOAL 2: Don’t come up with a totally new idea 1 hour before submission time, which is what happened last LD. While it was gratifying to actually finish it, it’s probably not a good habit to get into!

GOAL 3: Be aware of my process during the jam, and write a postmortem afterward.

Languages/tools:

– Javascript… again. It’s not my favorite medium, but web games are cross-platform, and I like that. Plus, I’ve built up a somewhat usable library/engine, which I’m comfortable using as basecode. It can be accessed here.

– GIMP for art

– I’ll probably ignore sound. But if I don’t, I might generate a tune with a little Python script, or record the noise of a carrot snapping, or something like that.

– Github for source control

– Notepad++ for IDE

– The patterns on my desk for inspiration. (And perhaps friends, family, and Wikipedia as well.)

Wow! No offense taken at all – I’m delighted someone actually looked at it! :)

Real World Gather At Ithaca Generator – Ithaca, NY, USA

Hi All!!  I wanted to let people in the upstate New York area that we are hosting a real-world gather at the Ithaca Generator Makerspace ( www.ithacagenerator.org ) starting friday at 8PM.

Ithaca Generator is located in the basement of the old Ithaca Journal Building, at 116 West Green St – down the alley from the chocolate shop.

A number of us entered the last compo, and I really enjoyed myself, though I did not finish my game in time.  Here’s a link to the final product:

Minimalism

It runs best in chrome – made using lime.js – a very nice little library.

See you on friday!

What’s this, 9? 10 in a row? Whatever.

Unity 3D + various expensive tools.

Here’s a look at where the magic happens:

Best of luck to all competitors & if you give up you never wanted to try in the first place.

as of this comment, it’s 48 hours starting in 3 days, 23 hours, 38 minutes and 30 seconds.
20. Aug 2013 · 00:55 UTC
Unless I am a duck, the competition starts this Friday, the 23rd of August, at 9PM Eastern time.
20. Aug 2013 · 01:13 UTC
See that big banner at the top of the screen? It has a countdown clock until it starts (that way there’s no confusion with timezones, etc). Once it starts you have 48 hours for the competition or 72 hours for the jam. Competition has slightly stricter rules, whereas the jam is very loose. Check out the rules/guide link at the top if you want to know more.

There is no confusion about timezones. Eastcoast timezone is best timezone.

I’m in!

This is going to be my second LD, but that one previous time doesn’t make me any less excited and maybe a little nervous. The themes look decent so far, save for a few uninspired ones; hopefully we won’t have another Minimalism. As for my tools:

Language: Haxe, unless I chicken out and fall back to AS3 as I did last time. Either way, going to use Flixel.
IDE:
FlashDevelop.
Graphics:
Not sure yet; probably Photoshop CS2 or GIMP.
Music: LMMS or Musagi, if any.
SFX: BFXR.

More Ludumdare just means you know the horror better. Good Luck

Tentatively In for the Compo!

I have a strict work deadline next week so I’m not sure how much time I can dedicate to this but I’m going to at least start.

Engine/Language: Unity Pro, C#
Graphics: Photoshop, ProBuilder (For terrain or simple 3D models)
Audio: Bfxr and maybe GarageBand for a simple music track

I have a large variety of Unity assets from the asset store that I may or may not make use of:
PlayMaker
2D Volumetric Lights
ProBuilder
2D Toolkit
SM2 + EZGui
Rotorz Tile System

Things I’m going to do differently this time:
Last time I was really concerned about having a concept and taking it from the beginning all the way to the end with a story, levels, music, and trying to achieve something very polished. This used so much time that I had to sacrifice game play mechanics. Because of that my last game ended feeling polished at first but ran out of steam and became rather boring very quickly. This time it is 100% ALL about game play. I want to forget about look and feel. I am going to focus on having something that I think is fun.

I am considering this time around I may want to add a multiplayer element to my game. Making something multiplayer usually adds a whole new dynamic and there is so much you can do. The problem is that multiplayer is usually quite hard to do in a short amount of time so I’m going to need to prepare for it if I want to go that route. I’m thinking to use PlayMaker+PhotonCloud if I go the multiplayer route. That’ll depend on if I have time to make a quick test project. I don’t want to get hung up on any issues!

You can’t let something silly like a deadline interfere with your ludumdare entry. Good Luck

computer problems

My computer just decided that it won’t let me do anything or open anything so I restarted it about a half an hour ago. Now it has decided to try and repair itself and has been stuck on the windows 8 attempting repair screen for a half hour. I’m posting this from my tablet and hope I don`t need to attempt to make a game on an android tablet. Wish me luck.

EDIT: Well apparently after it ran for almost an hour everything is fine now. I just hope this doesn’t happen during the dare.

If you loose the computer again a pen and paper or tablet game would be really cool anyway. Good Luck
