LD27 August 23–26, 2013

A long time ago…

I caught interest to LD since its number was 24 or even earlier. I was in vacation, so i enjoyed watching videos and played several games from it after.

Ludum Dare 25. It’s a cold winter outside the window.  I was waiting on contest, and start of the contest motivated me to spend 2 days on creating ideas and at least i drew… a goat. I liked spending a couple of  hours on this process. But. Clocks are saying: the contest is over!  I lost my motivation on it, but new gameplay idea was born! Hurray! Only left to create the game. Maybe, some time later…

Ludum Dare 26. 1 week before start. I’m emotionally talking to my friend about Ludum Dare and what it actually is, i’m taking part in theme voting, and every day i’m excited to look the round’s result. And the theme is… Minimalism! Boom! What the!?  It’s mostly my problem, that it’s hard for me to put one of my ideas into minimalistic space, cause my mind associates it with ‘bounding yourself with chains’. Also i can spend a couple of days into polishing an idea and creating a marvelous world in my head, and it’s not bad. The good idea must be grown with love from a little seed.  But here you must put all your creativeness and grow the idea during the process. Nobody force you to create a super-polished title. The main thing is to put your soul to the game, and people will feel it.

In another state, after cold-cold winter i wasn’t prepared enough with technical moments, like programming, tools. So i decided to prepare myself 100 percent to the next one.

Ludum Dare 27: it’s already here!  I’m trying to do it, …

Ludum Dare 28  Stop! This possibility will be in future.

Maybe, the problem was, that i haven’t announced myself in participation? So, 3 long-expected words:  I am in !

And doesn’t matter, that i haven’t finished preparing programming tools, or another stuff. You can choose an already made powerful engine or game constructor.

Can’t draw? Try! Everyone have possibility to draw. Watch the world every second, and you will found, that there are many things, happening  just right now near you, that you haven’t noticed before. You can also collaborate with more experienced artist and take part in the jam.

Motivation? Taking  part in a such big event and share with people, what you create, motivates me very-very-very!

I’m going for the jam (i like to spend a lot of time on thinking on prototype, read above :) Now i’m going to sleep(it’s night by me), so see you on the start!

Good luck dude :) I’m glad you’re deciding to participate too 😀

We’re in!

Hi there Ludum Darers!

I’m Foug, from Lightmare Studio, France (we developed “Beware Planet Earth!”, should you know it by chance :)). So… this is our post to say we’re in for the jam!

There are four of us:

  • Gwenael ‘Gwen’ Massé is our artist and will also be our sound designer and musician on the jam
  • Christophe ‘Quittouff ‘ Rautou is our coder and will be our coder on the jam too!
  • Fabrice ‘Fab’ Chaland is our CEO and producer and will be doing level and game design
  • … and me, Frederic ‘Foug’ Oughdentz, game designer, who will also be doing some coding in the jam.

Of course everybody will be testing and doing game design and or else… what’s the point? :)

We are going to use:

  • Game Maker: Studio (Standard and Pro version)
  • Photoshop CS3
  • Maybe some Flash CS3 if we go for interpolation-based animations (which will greatly depend on the theme and what art style we go for)
  • sfxr for the SFX, but we may also use a Zoom H2 mic + Audacity for capturing real life SFX… or voices!
  • FL Studio for the music.

That wraps it up!  Good luck everybody (compo or jam), and have fun!

Oh I forgot to tell you: since we are in France, it is currently 9:30PM here! We’re ready, but since the jam begins at 3:00AM tomrrow, we’ll start with a good night sleep first 😉

ABOUT TO START!

I’M IN GUYS

You know, capslock make everything better. I read it on Skyblog.

Well, yeah, I’m French, I’m from Montpellier, and I’m in for LD. Gaeel convinced me to do this, and I will. Try.

Let’s get this straight : it’s my first try, and I suck at this. I just discovered Lua two weeks ago, and it’s pretty awesome, so I’ll give this a try. I used to do Web and Web only, but stopped coding like two years ago, so I’m a little rusty. As for graphics and sounds, well, I can make a circle look like it’s square… yet I’m unable to make it round, so yeah, basically, things will be very simple. Sounds… Better not even talk about it :DI tend to get carried away when starting a project, and end up procrastinating like there’s no tomorrow, so it will be a good occasion to avoid overdoing it and set my goals to ” Reasonable ” instead of ” You’ll need three lives just to get it to barely work “.

So, let’s get to it boys ! Hope it will turn out well for everyone, here in Baptême du Jeu and everywhere else in the world :)

Ludum Dare 27 – JAM

Team of 2 guys (me and Jonas)

Coding:   Java – Eclipse

GFX:   Photoshop

SFX:   sfxr

Music: Not chosen

External libs: libGDX

Two fun facts for this Ludum Dare; TLDR I’m In

1) Coffee shop hopping because the apartment is without Internet. This will be intense in a spectacularly amazing way.

2) The man in the dinosaur suit is stalking me again. He is not spectacular nor amazing. His dinosaur imitation is ok.

Let’s go!

Ludum Dare 27 – Oculus Rift

Skipped a couple LD’s, but I’m back for #27!

This time I’ll be using Unity which I’ve never used before, but I’m following the Unity StarFox tutorial by PushyPixels to get a grasp on it.

The game I create will be built for the Oculus Rift. I don’t know what the theme is yet, but hopefully it will be accommodating for this platform. I may also be using the Razor Hydra, however, for each peripheral I use, less people can play the game (how many people have both a rift and hydras?).

List of tools:

  1. Unity – for glue.
  2. Blender – for modelling.
  3. Photoshop – for textures.
  4. sfxr, piano, FL studio – for sounds.

Did you know Oculus is hosting their own game competition, with a prize of 50,000 dollars? I think it would be pretty cool to see all the entries. I’m glad that these Quick-Make-A-Game comps are spreading. Anyways, Good Luck!

Entrance Announcement.

Formalities!

I’ll be partaking.

Tools:

I really want to do something using SDL2, but I hadn’t gotten past the “Hello World” program on it yet, and there was just released a new tutorial for it, so I’m really tempted, but I haven’t coded in SDL in about 10 or more years, so I’ll probably fall back on Unity.

Gimp/Audacity/Blender/Sculptris/and probably a few tools I’m not thinking of.

None of the themes match all the ideas I had…  but maybe I’ll cram it in somehow.

Also!  We at the video game museum will be livestreaming!  Come join us if you are in the area!  Probably on Friday it will be the Fight Night crowd doing their thing but I plan to put it in to the sidebar anyway, and we’ll come over and distract them and usurp their show.  I actually haven’t set this the lievestreaming yet, so we may yet run in to technical difficulties, but we have grand plans!

Just to share frustration…  this is what XCode looked like last time I tried to feed it a sample SDL program…  I was hunting for where ever I am supposed to put the -L switch when really I should have been working.

I will be participating at Ludum Dare 27 using an improved version of the framework I wrote for LD25.

For textures I use Paint, soundeffects sfxr and pixitracker for music. I just discovered pixitracker and it’s totally awesome — so definitely check it out if you have worries about making music for your game!!!

I love pixitracker!

Khakionion is in!

I’ll be using Unity, targeting iPad. Looking forward to it!

The themes I like the most so far are “10 Seconds,” “Connections,” and “Surveillance.” Hoping that one of those gets picked.

I’m in (probably)

Depending on my inspiration and free time this weekend, I’ll give Ludum Dare a try. I code in C++ and mostly use Vim and The Gimp. I will also use the open source Lol Engine (which isn’t really an engine, just a cross-platform wrapper for OpenGL/D3D and a few other libraries).

I’m in!

I won’t have the whole weekend this time around due to real-life stuff, in fact I’ll only have Friday afternoon, most of saturday and tiny fragments of sunday, but we’ll see. I’ll have to keep it simple and minimize art and such because I’m terrible at it.

Tools I’ll be using:

  • C/SDL- Moving down to C because C is the 2nd most incredible language I’ve ever come across (nothing will take Python’s throne away, though). SDL: Tried and true.
  • Pelle’s C- It was a pain getting it set up with SDL, but once I did, it was very much well worth it! Pelle’s C is definitely the single greatest IDE I have ever come across. It’s impossibly simple yet at the same time impossibly powerful- coding is a breeze and the UI is really innovative.
  • Sunvox- Very confusing at first but a little while ago I came to finally master it, and it’s proven to be an incredibly versatile synthesizing tool. Probably not recommended to try and learn it in the remaining hours until theme announcement, but if you ever get the chance I recommend it.
  • GraphicsGale- I think I’d like to move on sometime in the future but as of yet I’ve never really found anything to top this. ASEprite is good, if very buggy and crashprone, and all the other options are either behind a paywall, made for Mac (eww), or just aren’t good.

Hopefully I can do this, not really known for coming up with simple ideas but I’ll try and make that more of a focus than the theme itself this time, we’ll see where that goes.

Almost LD

Hey, this is Andy. Just a quick update to my previous post. I voted:

My LD27 votes

There are a few themes that I voted down that are actually okayish, but there are plenty of themes I really don’t want, like “Survival” or “Death is Useful”. I want to make something pretty chill and non-violent and that does not involve zombies or platforming. I have a few vague ideas about what I want, I’ve just got to actually got to toss them out when it’s time.

I also found a Line In cable! So I can record junk from my Korg Microstation or my cheap Casio PT-1 knockoff without much effort (maybe Sound Recorder). I’m pretty happy about this.

Here is my desk.

desk

I might do a Twitch stream, I’m not sure though. I’ll at least do timelapse probably, if I end up actually working on something. I probably will avoid posting again here till a bit after the compo starts (since the server tends to croak during that time) so catch you in a few! And maybe look for updates on Twitter (@Bananattack) instead.

Count me in!

It will be my first time playing but I am really exited.

I’m going to use SDL2 with C++.
For graphics I will use GIMP and Audacity for any music.

Best of luck to everyone and happy coding!

I’m in, but only at 50k for 45% of the business~

Hey all. I’m a bit of a dormant indie developer; so I’m hoping that this jam will help me motivate myself back into making some cool stuff again! I have a history of making zany fun games so here’s hoping the theme will be good! 😀
