LD29 April 25–28, 2014

I’m in

I’m in!

Probably gonna use Java or Javascript. I have a sort of a library of my own for those.

Gonna try posting live streams of my work on G+ and, of course, pictures here.

I’m in! First Time, EXCITED

Been wanting to do a Ludum Dare for the last year, finally the stars have aligned! I’m in for the first time.

I’ll probably be using C# in either XNA/MonoGame or Unity. Will probably use SXFR for sound effects. Paint.NET, Gimp, Paint, for graphics. I may try a few other tools while I am at it.

Or i might throw that all away and try making it with Html5 and Javascript… :)

Anyways, excited to get going!

I am in. Finally. It’s here!

So, this will be my 5th Ludum Dare and I’m pumped. Unfortunately missed the last one, but I’m in again. Going to be potentially trialling some new stuff this time, hope that goes well. LibGDX is not brand new to me, but it will be my first time making an actual game in it. I really hope that goes okay.

  • LibGDX (Java)
  • GIMP, maybe Paint.NET
  • SFXR (well, some form of it, most likely BFXR)
  • maybe Tiled
  • maybe Box2D

I wish everyone luck, just submit something. Don’t call it quits on Saturday afternoon. Take a break, but come back. Submit something. Maybe it sucks, is incomplete, buggy, or something else but submit it. Get feedback. We have a good community of devs here, many of which will be supportive and give you very good feedback. My first 2 LD games sucked. They were terrible, and pretty boring to play. They had the buggiest collision detection you ever saw. But I submitted them, and I got better. I think Shoodir and Broken Controls (my past 2 games) were actually kind of fun, and were less buggy. I hope to make something better again this LD. I hope you make something better this LD. Good luck everyone!

PS. Watch a Stream. It can be encouraging to watch other developers having success, and make those bug-hunting times less frustrating when you’re not the only one having them.

Why am I doing this?!

I’m mostly writing this as a (super) quick analysis as to why I am doing this 48 Game Jam / Competition.  This will be my first Ludum Dare.  I had heard about it before but had never investigated it closely.  The reason for this investigation now is that for the past 9 months I have been working on a programming book.  This was a long, drawn-out, and boring process; this difficulty was not something I was anticipating.  It made me irritable and actually started making me lose faith in my abilities but more importantly my passion as a game developer.  In conjunction with my current job, it was the perfect formula for stress, resentment, depression, and a bunch of other negative feelings.  The book is done, so why Ludum Dare?  One reason is it’s advertised as a primarily SOLO game jam.  This is an area I think I thrive in actually — no long meetings, no compromising vision (which is different than cutting back on scope), no hurt feelings or politics.  I mostly want to have fun, but I also want to see if I can rejuvenate the passion for making games — not technical text, not concepts, not ideas, but an actually game!  I’ve done the Global Game Jam before, and themes in game jams have always sort of “burned” me; this has been mostly due to the fact that I had gone into game jams with an idea in mind and couldn’t think how to make the theme work with the idea that wasn’t utter bullsh*t.  For this Ludum Dare, I’m trying to go in with no ideas other than the fact that the game will be in Unity3D (or GameMaker is I think that is a better fit).  This isn’t the most exciting post, but I hope to write a few more during the course of Ludum Dare — but not too many as I have to actually focus on a game — and good luck to everyone participating!

Looking forward to getting something at least playable :)

my first ludum dare

Hello, this will be my first time participating.

I will be using C++, SDL, sfxr, as well as my own libraries for font, file parsing, and sound.

filereader: https://github.com/ultramailman/filereader

charimg: https://github.com/ultramailman/charimg

sdlsoundwrapper: https://github.com/ultramailman/sdlsoundwrapper

I hope I’ll be able to make something playable :)

We’re in!

This will be our second Jam!  For tools we’ll be using:

  • Unity
  • C#/Monodevelop
  • Wings3D
  • Gimp 2
  • as3sfxr
  • autotracker

We also have some existing code, which we may or may not use:

https://github.com/jwinder86/LDShared

I’m In! My second Ludum Dare

I’d like to make a pixel art game for tomorrow’s game jam.
My tools
– Stencyl 3.0 (Flash)
– Photoshop
– Maybe BFXR would do
– Still not sure about BGM.

– Camtasia for screen capture

Goodluck to all of us! =]

Doge Mount

I’m in

Probably using these tools:

  • Unity 3D
  • Pro tools 9 MP
  • Sketch up
  • Bfxr sound generator

Blog post with some tools I used for other LD project:

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2012/05/02/micro-world-toolbox/

I’d like to highlight GXSCC – Automatically converts a MIDI to 8-bit chiptune. Just drag and drop your MIDI to this window, then click Authoring to export it.

8 bit style midi

Good luck and have fun :)

Preparations coming!

Hi!! Im so excited with this Ludum Dare :D!! Okay, I said this a lot of times… YAY!

Im making the final tweaks on my toolbox, and I will be posting them! Someone can get inspired, or something, I hope.

I’m in

This is my first Ludum Dare 😮

I’ll be using Unity to make a 2D game.

Bam. GL HF to everyone! :)

Last day

Morning everyone!

After a BBQ, bonfire and some beers with friends last night I’m feeling all refreshed, so today I’m going to be fooling around with the animations in my graphics engine, and will try to finalize some of the features. I’ve just realized there’s a small issue with my object state management and it’s not incredibly easy for me to change animation states (e.g changing from idling to moving), so I’ll be trying to figure that out. And hopefully I can hack together a basic sound engine before the day is up so that I don’t have to worry over the framework during the compo.

As usual I’ll be streaming (www.twitch.tv/noomnahor) and will be sitting in the chat channel, happy to answer any questions you might have.

I’m in

I’m in!

This will be my ?th Ludum Dare… so many I can’t remember… 6th I think.

Not sure what I’ll be using

Either

– Cocos2d-html5

or

– Unity

– Pixen

– Tiled

– Acorn

– Heroku

We’ve also organized a local meetup so I’ll be sure to post some pictures from that

Also Hi Mike!

I’m In!

Whether I’ll stick closely to the theme or not, well, probably not. :)

Engine/Language: Most likely GameMaker and GML. Considering Unity but it probably won’t happen.

Tools:

Photoshop / Paint.net / Maybe Graphics Gale.

Probably SFXR for sound.

Tiled, as maybe the Tiled2GM Importer

http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=583235

http://jugglingcode.com/projects/GMSTiled_0_9_7_0.zip,

or a Tiled GM Importer I wrote of my own utilizing the SimplXML scripts for GameMaker (hosting here)

Livestream: Potentially, at twitch.tv/AngryMobofSteve

Twitters: http://twitter.com/AngryMobOfSteve

Caffeine of choice: Probably way too much Coke and Rockstar Juiced.

A game? 48 hours? Solo? I’m in.

Hey guys! This is my first Ludum Dare.

I’ve been an indie dev for a year now and oohhhh boy what a fucking ride. Sometimes I wanna quit, sometimes I wanna hug the whole world, but most of the time I’m just enjoying myself. That and learning a hell of a lot. Which brings me to Ludum Dare.

My goal is to learn how to make better games faster, and I can’t think of a more appropriate way.

Ohh yeah, about tools:

Engine: Unity3D

Graphics: Photoshop, Gimp, Paint

Sound Effects: bfxr, sfxr, audacity

Music: if present, will be made in some of the tools sugested “/tools”

Let’s do this!

Obligitory “I’m In” post

So yeah, I’m in. I actually have a slightly different setup this go ’round, as I have a different (albeit old and hand-me-down) PC I’ve been setting up for graphics stuff, so I can multitask I guess. I also have a new charger for my old netbook, but it’s unreliable, and it would be overkill anyway…

Language: Either Java as usual or Unity. I’m actually undecided.

Other tools: OpenMPT (maybe FL Studio as well), sfxr, Gimp, Inkscape (you know, more or less the usual…)

Good luck to everyone participating this time!

…we’ll all need it if that robot is participating again…God help us…

I’m in!

Hello all! I will be participating, though I’m on Guam time and have to work on Monday 3/4 of the way through the compo. I will be using the following:

Coding:

GameMaker Studio(good) -or- Love(also good) -or- C++/OpenGL(more, um, sadism? personal growth)

Audio:

FL Studio 11

Graphics:

Graphics Gale

Spriter

Maybes:

– ZeroBrane Studio-

-AutoTileGen-

-Notepad++-

-Visual Studio Pro(got it from work, I’m so poor!)-

I’m really looking forward to this one. I entered previously and learned quite a bit about realistic goals; My goal this time: finish with something complete! Bonus goal: fun too! Thank you, creators, for this opportunity!

Hey you, GIMP: Be efficient!!

In this time I introduce my pixelart-ready-efficient-gimp-setup!!

gimp-setup

Toolbox alignament

To do my ugly pixelart I only need some draw/selection tools, layers, color palletes, and a action history. Because of that, I remove every toolbox and I add one by one!

In the left I put the color pallete editor. Also, I can select the colors from here.
In the right-top I put the undo history (without buttons).
In the right-bottom I put the layer toolbar.

Also, I don’t like having too much windows spreaded in the screen, so I prefered the single window mode (seted in Windows/Single-Window Mode).

Shortcuts and tools

I really hate using the mouse or presing imposible keybindings to use some tools! Thats why I make my own shortcut scheme (editable in Edit/Preferences/Interface/Configure Keyboard Shortcuts).

Resumed Key Layout:

  • numbers – tool selection
  • qwert… – undo/redo/etc
  • adsf… – cut/copy/paste/etc

Because the only things that I do are: Pencil, Erase, Rect-Select, Magic-Select, Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste… I do the following bindings:

  • 1: pencil
  • 2:  erase
  • 3: rectangle select
  • 4: fuzzy select
  • w: undo
  • e: redo
  • a: cut
  • d: copy
  • s: paste

If you have some time, tryit! It’s really confortable :)

Preferences details

To improve a few more the behaviour, I setup a few more options:

  • Pencil – size: 1 (1px draw)
  • Erase – size: 1 (1px draw)
  • Erase – hard edge (dont do interpolation, erase only 1px!)
  • Preferences/Default grid – spacing: 1px x 1px
  • Preferences/Default image – fill with: transparency

That’s all folks! I hope that this info were useless, and that my english use was fine :)

Free software for all :)

Thanks. It never even occurred to me to make a fixed layout for pixel art. I adopted your setup, but in addition, I mapped Palette Foreground Color Next and Previous to keys, so I can switch between them without the mouse.

Nice tip!

Now Im trying to export scaled images… But it’s late and I have to setup my engine =S

For scaling I will use imagemagick:

$ convert img.png -scale 1000% img.png
Pixtopher

Super clean setup. Nice!

We’re in!

There will only be 2-3 of us working on it this time, but we’re excited to do a real team jam!

We’ll be using:

-Java

-LWJGL

-TWL’s png loader

-Stefan Gustavson and Peter Eastman’s simplex noise code

-My own custom 2d AABB engine https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/52691737/AABBEngine.zip

-(I may use slick for sound and music)

And so I say, good luck to you all!

It is so on, as some would say, like donkey kong.

I guess that’s my way of saying I will be participating in Ludum Dare 29! woooo!

Tools:
Gamemaker studio
or
Stencyl 3.0
or
Unity 2D

FL Studio

Photoshop cs6

AutoTileGen

BFXR

Good luck to everyone! Cheers!

Gloria

Use the tool that u have more confidence! Both three are good choices for a gamejam!
