LD29 April 25–28, 2014

Finally! Here’s Dead men tell no tales

I’ll write up more tomorrow, until then, enjoy! Look forward to playing everyone else’s submissions. My first time doing LD48, and it’s been awesome!

I *will* complete an LD Compo. I will, I will, I WILL!

…Just not… *sigh* … this time.

…

ACTIVATE JAM! One more day and looser rules to fit my expanding waistline. Feels good.

My work so far – there’s actually a… ‘game’ in here. Of sorts.

Rescue, Rescue Rogue!

Find the rescue pod and bring it back to the rescue area before– well, before nothing, actually, but I guess I’ll do that tomorrow. Along with…

  • INITIAL CONTROLS
  • Add X&Z axis reset on x – or toggle?
  • Unhook y axis from everything else? Gets inverted on a 360 x.
  • SUB POLISH 02
  • BASIC ENVIRONMENT
  • Remake water textures
  • Surface/Submerge effects
  • Mission timer – must be within Recovery Trigger when clock hits zero
  • POD BASICS
  • Pod pressure timer
  • Recovery announcements!
  • POD PING
  • Player within ping collision sphere 3 – play ping sound 03
  • Player within ping collision sphere 2 – play ping sound 02
  • Player within ping collision sphere 1 – play ping sound 01
  • PROCEDURAL LEVELS
  • Entrance (cutter)
  • Corridor
  • 6-way junction
  • Cap
  • ENEMIES
  • Hunter
  • Depth charge / mine
  • SOUNDS
  • Oh lordy
  • MENU / FRONTEND
  • Nnngh.

I think I need to just spend a bit of time working out a nice clear attack plan. My enthusiasm for some of the shovel work is low, tbh, but with some clear goals that’ll work itself out.

I must say, I’m enjoying using Rigidbodies for moving characters around.  I’m missing some bits of Character Controller et al, but not as much as I’d thought.

Well. See y’all in the mornin’.

Day 2!

Hello Folks! Readying for bed, myself since I work a 9-to-5.
We burned the midnight oil yesterday, and today was a long but productive day.

Status Update time!

The Good:

Lots of content updated on day two. To be honest, I’m rather impressed that we’ve gotten so much done so quickly.
AI implementations are going on, there’s a tutorial nearing completion
Enemies are animated, and will be done in time
Environment settings are in, some cutscene setups done
No compromises so far with story or gameplay due to time constraints (what.)

The Bad:

Bugs bugs bugs (fixed though!)
Enemy variety  –  will be doing this tomorrow, sure thing.
Needing more content and mapping / environment, but still hopeful for it on day 3
Music (Thank God for Kevin Macleod <3) – Gero nailed a really nice track for one the game’s key scenes. Like a boss!

Enjoy some screenshots of “Exiting the Facility,” the ideal ‘Act 2’ of our game.

Jam it is!

I was hoping to finish in time for the 48 hour competition however things didn’t quite pan out as planned. So sadly I didn’t finish in time. I should finish tomorrow though with no issue.

Here are a few screenshots of today’s progress, lots of gluing systems together tomorrow.

Reflections On My First Game Jam

Manifold Mining Fire Control System is the fruit of my first game jam! I’ve learned a lot over the past weekend.

Even though I tried to be judicious in scope, I could only finish half of the gameplay that I wanted to include. Perhaps that was a good thing, though, as I was able to reach the same feeling and mood by using some very straightforward but rich sound design.

I’ve also gained a little more experience working with Unity’s physics engine and have a little better intuition for how to create a clean game architecture.

I can’t wait to see what other people have come up with!

My first LD finished!

Morpher is a game where you can change into the enemies that you capture. Enjoy!

Where Is My Bone?

Alright! I’m done.
Second Ludum Dare for me, and first one I finish!

Where Is My Bone? entry is right here!

Where Is My Bone? is a game about sniffing stuff and digging for loot. Find your bone!

<LEFT> and <RIGHT> to move.
<UP> to jump!
<DOWN> to dig, sniff and bark.

Find the right scent to dig properly!

It’s done!

Wow, this was my first game jam ever and my first “completed” game. I’m surprised I finished (albeit barely). I’m happy with how it turned out all things considered, and I learned far more in these past 48 hours than I did in the last few months.

Things I’m proud of:

-The music: considering I haven’t played music in years and have never composed anything prior to this.

-The gameplay: Having played through it countless times in the last 12 hours, the fact that I wasn’t absolutely sick of it is a testament to it.

Things I’m not proud of:

-The graphics: I’ve never claimed to have any artistic  talent ever, and even though the graphics aren’t horrible, I’m not particularly proud of them.

-My schedule: I barely finished an hour before the deadline, not counting the following 40 minutes of exporting, unforeseen bug fixing and finding a place to upload everything.

I hope everyone who plays it enjoys it! Fair warning though, It’s pretty difficult:

Done + thoughts

Hooray! I think it turned out pretty well. This wasn’t actually my first idea, though. Originally I came up with the idea of a game that takes place inside the inner faces of a cube(or some other geometric object), and you could unfold and refold the cube to rearrange the level and progress. While I think it would’ve been really strong on the theme and perfectly simple for LD, it required too much 3D in order to execute it well, and I don’t know anything about 3D. So instead I came up with the of a platformer where there’s water and you could change the water level, and things acted differently whether they were underwater or not. While I think it ended up being a really cool concept for a platformer, I don’t think my entry ended up being as strong on theme as I originally imagined.

Some stuff I learned:

– Level design is really difficult and time-consuming. I pretty much had this whole final day for coming up with levels, and I ended up getting really stuck after the first 5. Maybe it was a result of not having enough mechanics to play with, but I think there were definitely more possibilities than what I ended up with.

– Tools are awesome! I had learned the basics of using Spriter and Tiled before this, but this was the first time I actually put them to work on a real project, and they certainly went a long way in making the game turn out as good as it did. Spriter let me have some animations and a decent resolution instead of tiny static sprites like my previous LD entries, and without Tiled it would’ve been impossible to make the levels quickly enough to get this done on time.

Anyway, that’s pretty much it. If I ever feel like revisiting a project this is definitely the first one I will go to, since I feel like there is a ton of room for expansion and improvement. Thanks for reading/playing!

Topsail (Fail)

output

You can move around a really cool looking procedural iso-grid! That’s about it :/If I decide to not work tomorrow maybe I’ll make it into a game (I had wanted to do some simple ship combat, but smuggling may be easier to finish..).

Looks really cool. Might be able to hack it in to a little puzzle game.

All Done!

I’ve finally finished my entry, Underminers Inc. I sort of ran out of time at the end, so the UI is a bit unpolished, but at least its playable-ish. Find it here.

Done!

Phew! Just a quick post before I collapse…
This time around I had a few moments when I felt like giving up. I didn’t really know where I was going with my game for the majority of the compo. Seems like I managed to finish *something* though. It even somewhat resembles a game, I guess.
Here’s a screenshot:

Dolphin Dash is finished, to tired to make a decent post…

My first time posting in this Ludum Dare, so yeah… it’s a surprise game, even for me! I started out not very motivated, but here is the end result!

PLAY DOLPHIN DASH
I’m pretty happy with it, it plays good, it’s fun, and the artstyle turned out to be pleasing! I guess a more artistic kind of game has to wait 😛 Can’t wait to play all your games!

Made it in time… Sort of.

First things first, the entry link: Beneath the clouds

screenshot-2

Some people might call it “interactive experience” and not a game. I wouldn’t blame them for that. A lot of gameplay pieces weren’t implemented because of lack of time, so I chose to make something rather than nothing.

And boy that wasn’t a piece of cake for me.

A lot of stuff was planned, quarter of it was implemented and only half of that has made into final version. It always happens. An example would be this sad bird that didn’t make it into the release.

bird2

I have never painted art before. Though I believe things went nicely.

I’m not musician either, and never even used audio tools (except for a bit of sfxr). I understand that music and sound would make the game ten times better, but eh… Bad planning, bad time management.

So, did this LD teach me anything? Absolutely!

  1. Don’t be afraid to take breaks, they help you to look at things from different point of view.
  2. Don’t be afraid of smelly code. You won’t make it in time if you’ll be polishing a single piece of code.
  3. Plan ahead. Make a list of necessary stuff, and run though it when you feel stuck. Switch context often enough.
  4. Make more games! Practicing means a lot.

See you in August! Cheers!

Made it!

I have finnished my entry, you can check out the game here: LINK

Can’t wait to try all of the cool games made for this LD, but firs, a well earned sleep…

First time LD48 (29)

Well that was a fun (and not so fun) ride.  It was not fun because I was sick with a sinus/headcold most of the time, but I finished!  I may do it again sometime, but hopefully next time I’ll do it while not sick.

My Feelings on Completing my First Ludum Dare!

Well…

That was interesting.

It started early on Friday when I realised that Ludum Dare would be happening this weekend. Being the naive and inexperienced fellow I was, I decided it was a Wooonderful idea to participate (how wrong I was). I worked for nearly 14 hours to complete my game and wondered why I was so naive to think this would be fun. But then something funny started to happen, I started enjoying my game. I realised that Ludum Dare had finally given me the push I needed to make a game to the point where I am happy with it. The game may not be the winner; heck, I may be the only one that likes it, however this has been the first time I was really proud of my work. Thank you.

(You can check out my game here! http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-29/?action=preview&uid=36494)

I have to say, my first entry in a LD ever turned out slightly better than I expected it to. Still, I had to fight quite some confidence issues after I compared my game with the numerous gifs and screenshots. My increasing weariness also influenced that, though. However, seemingly I still managed to upload it.

I could go on and on about what I think could be better and what is absolute balderdash, but I’ve decided to let you find that out yourself. Quite an achievement for me, actually.

I think that’s enough text for now. I present to you: Mia and the Mole. Can you dig it?

Go check it out. Or not. I mean, do whatever floats your boat… or something.

Ant World is submitted

I survived my first Ludum Dare with a somewhat playable game.

A short video of the first few levels:

Now I am ready for sleep!

My First Ludum Dare!

Hi everyone, my name’s Lucien Jély (@JelyLucien) and I feel really good right now..

I just finished my first ever game. It’s a simplistic game, kinda stupid, and, to top it off it has a very shallow approach to the subject(«  Beneath the  surface »). You just fight nano robots under someone skin…

it’s a console based game so it’s pretty slow there’s not much to look at, but I’m glad i was able to add some music , even though i

had to rush the composing part a little bit.

I wish i could’ve made something more personal, about the way you’re perceived and how it can differ from who you really are,  but my skills wouldn’t let me.

You see, I don’t have a lot of an experience with gamedev or programming.

I started learning C several years ago but got nowhere and dropped it after a while.

But this year i participated to the Global Gam Jam (as a musician) and it inspired to

pick up a new language and try things.

So i’ve started learning C# something like a month ago to LD29 (probably a bit less)  and i’m really inexperienced and

a total beginner (please don’t look at my code).

But anyway,  i’m glad i managed to put something out during those 48 hours :)

here it is by the way  : http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-29/?action=preview&uid=34265.

I hope you all had fun too.

I present to you… Greed for Gems!

Just submitted. I’m really satisfied with what I ended up with.

Yes, those are two player characters in hotseat mode.

Still far from that monstrosity that I was planning to create 48 hours before, but I’m glad anyway.

Ludum Dare 29 finished and complete

I did it. I’ve finished the game and uploaded.

I’m very happy because this is the second time I finished a game in a compo. I’ve participated in several ones (SpeedHack, TINS, PGD Challenge…) but only finished one game. Now, I have two.

Now, sleep. Tomorrow is a new day.

First Ludum Dare Complete!

Whoever said that I could only finish 1/4 of what I thought I could accomplish in 48 hours was wrong.

I only accomplished about 1/8 haha. Still, I’m really happy that I at least made a game. This was my first time actually making my own game and I’m quite pleased with the outcome, despite it being kind of basic (:

SPEAK SOFTLY AND CARRY A BIG STICK

Another Ludum Dare failed.

It’s my third LD failure.

First one I was learning how to code so it was understandably of poor quality.

Second one I took on too big a game to accomplish.

But this one I really though I’d make it, the game chosen was appropriately simple, there was a reasonable number of features and I implemented most of them. I worked 20 hours out of 48 which is way more than I did for the past two.

I feel like I fell very short of succeeding , if I had had 2 more hours I think I’d have made it but it’s the LD48 not the LD50 and to me working 2 hours past the deadline wouldn’t feel like success.

From the past two LD I learned some very valuable lessons, but this one … Sometimes it’s just bad luck I guess, or maybe I need to take some distance to figure out what went wrong.

Anyways, congrats to all of you guys for your games.

Ludum Dare is always fun whatever the outcome!

Locked in a game jam prison: The making of Deepweb

Well this weekend has been exciting. Shortly after the compo started my apartment’s front door broke so I couldn’t open it from the inside.

While waiting for my superintendent to answer his phone, I made this game, Deepweb about shady dealings beneath the surface of the internet we know and love.

I’m still trapped inside my apartment, but now the game is done and you can play it too.

Finished – “Gruffy Guertrouda”

I got my game finished, but not as finished as I wanted (he said, with an obvious tone) :)

LD29Progress005

Overall, I am super happy with the game. The textures are minimal (really, very), but the audio turned out okay, and the game is pretty neat and fun I think (I had fun while playtesting).

Give it a play right over here.

Post Mortem, Timelapse, and hand written notes coming tomorrow or so.

Day two progress

More of a game now, even if it is just a standard shooter, it’s pretty fun to play. Still lots to do and hard feature cutting decisions to make :[

Congrats to everyone that finished the compo!

Finally Amy’s Rescued!

My game is finally finished, the first day was like “Oh no… everything is turning really hard and bad… bugs, more bugs…” you all know what I’m talking about. But now! I turned the game in something I really love! It’s my first LD by the way but not my first game, and not the last!

Here it is!

Amy’s Rescue.

Your ship blow up and amy fell in the entrance of some kind of Underground Laboratory, what you need to do is rescue her from the evil humans! Kill Em’ All! Ah yes, but you have only 6 minutes, if not, they will dissect her!

Do you dare to try?

Beneath the Surface (Of Your Skin) – Entry Submitted

Entry: Link

At only two levels, it isn’t everything I’d hoped it would be, but it’s definitely some of the best art I’ve ever done on my own. I wanted to avoid water after all the google results for “Beneath the Surface” were of water and icebergs, so instead I went for “beneath the surface” of your skin. What better way to do this than to have a body hopping alien parasite?

Thoughts:

I think I could’ve done another level if I had another couple hours, but it would be close.

This is my first project in Unity that really came this close to completion, so I’m really proud of it on top of the art.

I tried to do sound, but finally had to accept that I am REALLY bad at composing. Thankfully I only lost about 20 minutes on it.

More thoughts later if I have anything useful to say.

Actually submitted something!

I really didn’t expect to have anything presentable after wasting about a quarter of the 48 hours trying to decide what to do (and more than another quarter on sleep), but after bailing out of the IRC channel to keep from getting discouraged by all the successful people there I plugged away on the game mechanic I had in mind, and when it turned out to be kind of fun I knew I had to submit something, even something horribly, obviously incomplete.

And part of that incompleteness was not being prepared with someplace to host a compiled version, so anyone not adventurous enough to build a libgdx project can safely skip over the eye-gougingly marvelous abomination that is: Splashy Bird! Yes I did feel like the world needed another riff on Flappy Bird! This one’s different! You play a white spherical “bird” diving Beneath the Surface of the water to catch blue spherical “fish”. Use your imagination!

Armadrillo Released!

Vertico

A 2D isometric “three degrees of freedom” shooter. Dive beneath the ice and fight creatures while moving in any direction, navigating a vertically-oriented coral reef.

This is my third Ludum Dare, and I’m really, really happy with how this one turned out.  As far as I know there’s not anything else that plays like Vertico, and I’m pleased with the atmosphere.  I think making the music before anything else really helped.

I’ll be posting a timelapse and post-compo version when I’ve recovered a bit, but in the meantime please give it a try!

First LD Success!

Sundiver, my first Ludum Dare entry, is complete! Just in time, though maybe not as polished as I would have hoped for. I’m proud to have completed something playable, with all of the requisite components.

Now, it’s time for me to die. I was glad to meet you nice people… cough cough… the light. Seems like… a beautiful maiden with… hamsters everywhere…

…I’ll revive in August. Probably.

Derp.

Definitely not finishing this time. I was way too ambitious, I had way too little time, and for some reason I decided to use a framework (Phaser) I didn’t know, and language I sorta knew (Typescript). On top of that, I had no starter code like I normally do, so even at the halfway point I was only implementing really basic stuff. It’s kind of a shame as I though that my game concept was quite interesting.

Phaser was really enjoyable to use though, though the compile-from-typescript workflow isn’t really ideal.

I did finish a pretty good song though – I think my biggest disappointment is that I won’t be able to see how I’d place in audio, but oh well.

Manifold : A Whack-A-Mole game of Biblical Proportions

Title Screen
Game Screen

I got the inspiration for my game from a scripture in Isaiah 2 about a man casting his idols of silver and gold to the moles and to the bats.

(Isaiah 2:19-21) And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.  20 In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;  21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

Well, I didn’t have time for the bat, but I sure did find tons of stuff I wish I had done:

  1. Write a better 2D engine before I started – it turns out I ended almost writing a 2D engine from scratch!
  2. Figure out how to compute collisions between objects so it’d be easy.
  3. Think of how a proper state machine would work for a great feeling game.

But there was stuff that seemed to go right too:

  1. Doing 8-bit style graphics (8×8 grid) with lots of colors was fun and I think they looked nice and playful.
  2. Having good musical tools helped make the music come out great.
  3. C++ Lambda functions and member initialization! – Boy these things are amazing…
  4. Fleshing out event handling stuff and graphics and sound with Allegro before the weekend was absolutely vital.

Ludum Dare #29: DONE!

Ocean RESCUE

This was my first entry to Ludum Dare, which was stressful but a lot of fun!

Ocean RESCUE is a game where you control a boat on a mission to rescue survivors in the ocean. There is a large sea creature that hunts you, hungry for the survivors you are trying to save. The boat is limited by fuel, though it can refill when you return to base.

I’m currently reading “Dune” by Frank Herbert, so the concept of a large sea creature rising up is somewhat inspired by the sandworms of Dune.

2014-04-28 LD48

You can check out the game on its submission page.

Additional notes on tools and resources used for LD29

For my LD29 entry, I used a community fork of Flixel (https://github.com/FlixelCommunity/flixel) and a community fork of Flixel Power Tools (https://github.com/FlixelCommunity/Flixel-Power-Tools).

I also used the freeware, commercial use allowed font PF Tempesta Seven (http://www.fontspace.com/yusuke-kamiyamane/pf-tempesta-seven).

For text editing, I not only used FlashDevelop, which is a nice IDE useful for AS3 development, but also GVIM, which is a free, open-source editor (http://www.vim.org/).

It’s over!

Well I submitted my game.

It’s incomplete. Terrible. And not a lot of fun. But I had a good time making it. When I had the time.

I joined LD48 at the last minute. I’m also a father and couldn’t take a break from that. I knew going in that it was unlikely that I’d be able to finish let alone compete. However the journey was challenging and interesting. You can learn more than you realize if you just give it a shot.

I now know what I cannot do. I don’t have forty-eight-straight free hours to do whatever I want with. I have to be tactical with what time I have. When I do get to spend it I need to know ahead of time what to focus on. And I have to make sacrifices to get to the goal. I cannot make games in my spare time with tight deadlines.

Some things I learned that I will carry with me if I ever decide to be crazy and sleep-deprived again:

  1. Don’t try anything new. You don’t have time to look up API references or recall maths you haven’t used in a while.
  2. Stick with tried and true designs. Shmups, platformers, and simple arcade games. You need to get it done not invent a whole new genre.
  3. Leverage constraints more. See how minimal you can go. Maximize for fun. The less you have to do the better.
  4. Plan to compete next time. Prepare.

All the best to all of the LD48 competitors and see you all next time.

Dawn of the Final Day -23 Hours and 30 Minutes Remaining-

Hi everyone! The final day is here!

We’ve made some progress with our game, we’ve implemented art and our poor ill programmer is working very hard to get everything to work as it should.
dag2dag2b
The art styles of the other artist, Jaden, and me don’t quite match yet, as I made semi-pastel flat-ish art and Jaden made epic tree monsters, but this is being worked on.
It seems that we’ll have a pastel coloured tree take over the world. But that’s ok, it will be a very happy game.
cloudspeopleBOOOOOOOOOOOMLD29_concepts3
I’m not quite sure if we’ll have enough time to create walking people, I’m working on enemies and some other things,  Jaden is working on making moving Yggdrasil sprites. On top of that we still have to make music and sfx. So I guess we’ll see where we will end up!

Good luck with your own projects, everyone!

– Mathijs, Masha and Jaden

Finished!

Finished the game!

I had great fun making Tunnel Gunner, and became very attached to the happy little robot I created as it’s protaganist. Ludum Dare was definitely a great experience. I really felt the pressure in the last day, trying to cram in extra features and hints with just minutes left on the clock.

This was the first game I’ve made with proper sound effects. I used Bfxr  ( http://www.bfxr.net/ ) to create many of them, but took actual audio samples for others, including making silly noises into a microphone.

The droning sound of the spaceship at the start of the game was sampled from the fans on my room mates’ Doge miner, I used the automatic door opener on my microwave for another sound effect. I found the sound design really enjoyable.

Combat

One of the great things about the dare is that it pushes you to build a totally complete game, and forces you to spend time on parts of game design you might otherwise over look.

Thank’s for reading, and I hope you give Tunnel Gunner a try, you won’t regret it!

Well you might, but that’s neither here nor there.

Failed… again :’

This is my second attempt and again I couldn’t finish on time. I feel like a Ninja Warrior falling on the water hahaha 😛

But i liked very much what I done and I’ll finish it later, calmly.
Eventhough don’t have completed, it was very exciting to participate once again. I hope to be better prepared for the next LD.

I worked on code and graphics.
This is a preview of something that I did:

cenote-beta

Failure!

Well at least I tried, but with less than an hour to go i seriously doubt i’ll have a game finished.

No game, but what i do have is a platforming engine with a multiplayer backend. So you can parkour with your friends. Right now there’s only 1 server so if it’s full i have no idea what happens (probably a crash). There’s not really any interpolation or extrapolation so crappy connections will look terrible.

Playable version here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/eac3y5ng41kvqpe/LudumDare29_release.swf (just drag and drop into your internet browser, depending on connection speeds it can take a while to join the game)

If you want to test out the multiplayer just boot up two copies of the game, or find some friends.

Well i tried.

Well i tried.

Post Mortem:

– Don’t make a multiplayer game unless you’ve done it before.

– Actually have a rough idea what the game will be or at least spend a little bit of time figuring it out.

– Art is important, leaving it to the last day never leaves you with enough time to create anything good.

It wasn’t a complete loss, I can definitely use the multiplayer experience in my actual projects. Which I had been shying away from because it sounded hard. The good news is, multiplayer stuff is tricky, but once you sort of ‘get’ it, you can make a semi functioning game fairly easily. Well regardless it was fun, and i learned a bunch of stuff I wouldn’t have tried in a normal day.

In the future, when i do another Ludum Dare, i’ll just make a flappy bird clone and call it a day.

Ludum Dare 29 is Officially a Success

Hey guys, it’s my first Ludum Dare and, guess what, I made a game!

It’s called Resource Divers: You are stranded on an island, but luckily you took a diving and engineering course in college, you can build a ship to get home. There is a bounty of resources in the ocean, but there’s one problem. The only way to power your ship is the power crystal, which is trapped at the bottom of the sea. You must build different air tanks, pressure suits, and speed increasing effects to reach the bottom of the ocean and claim the gem.

You can download and vote on it here

My game

I’ve finished my game!

It’s pretty different from what I had planned at first, but still pretty fun!

And hard. Very hard

Get it here!

So I kind of didn’t post anything

I was totally going to until I ended up not being around most of last night, so every second I had was spent on game development!

I may do a post-mortem a bit later. I think there’s some interesting stuff I could build on from my game.

OpenFrameworks fail

I chose OpenFrameworks as the library for my game and I developed on OSX thinking I could port easily to windows.   So with 10 mins left I download OF for windows only to find it requires windows 8 visual studio 2012 – I don’t have time to upgrade windows/install VS gah.   So then I try to export my OSX version but every time I distribute the archive and run my app it crashes…  still not sure why, but I think it is because maybe the app can’t find the openframeworks library file?  I also don’t have a Mac developer account – not going to drop $99 for the compo.  Not that my game was complete but I wanted to at least submit what I had.   It looks a bit like this:

My first real LD

Yes, it is done! My first real LD.

I’m proud of my game, but I know that it could be better if I wasn’t learning unity while I was making it.

Game is petending to be dark metroidvania, has one level and can be finished in twenty minutes if you’ll bet it first time. But you won’t, because it’s quite difficult.

So, have fu.

PS: It has cats with three heads. Really.

GeoCrush done!

Wow! I did it! My game has been completed, just in time!

screen

This time, I made my game a little more RPG-ish, I hope you’ll enjoy it! ^^

My entry is here.

Finally done!

Title

‘All is one’ is a philosophical exploration-adventure-game. Search for certain things in a world on the edge of destruction and learn about the very nature of things.

I’m too tired at the moment to do much more than copy the text from my game page…tired, but very happy about this fun weekend and the satisfying outcome. I really think this is at least my best jam-game to date, maybe even overall. :)

Check it out and enjoy!

See you all the next couple of weeks for some serious playing, rating and commenting.

~ Erkberg ~

(the tildes make the name look more pretty)

PS: Be sure to check out the game of my dear bro broepi, we spent the event together and we had a blast. Cheers to you, my epic bro!

PPS: Also cheers to our comrade  dito, who unfortunately wanted way too much and ended up not finishing. Still, I think he learned a lot and had a really good time.

PPPS: (this is the last one, promised!) A big fat THX to my brother (yes, my actual brother ^^) ketzer, whose testing, feedback and general support were priceless.

Here’s the finished-ish game!

Save Us

It’s basically a puzzle game.

Unity’s a head*!$*

Need some sleep now. And some vitamin D.

They Beep Title Screen

Hey everyone, Jason again with Etherframe Games!

We’ve got the whole cast for They Beep done and have created a title screen to show them off.

They Beep Title Screen

They Beep

They Beep is a dialogue driven game about a normal office. One of Travis’ co-workers might secretly be a robot. But probably not.

Hell Zombies re-oriented

I’ve switched the game around to work in landscape mode, it’s way better in a web browser now. I also added scoring and simple progressive difficulty.

Switching the orientation was interesting, I’m still not really sure how best to do that in Unity, I guess maybe have a lot of positioning done in scripts? Still, wasn’t too onerous just manually switching it all out, certainly for a game jam. Probably good learning experience for future Unity work.

Wow that was fun

Made it through another ludum dare, but failed to make my game simple enough to complete and polish.  I just had enough time to get it all in and working?!  This was due to the fact that I wanted to make a real stealth game based on Ai.  I knew it was gonna be hard but it really messed me up a lot.  Well you can try it here at( http://www.kongregate.com/games/tinykidtoo/lurkerscreencap

Looks really nice! You may not have finished, but colour me impressed. I’m sure you learned a lot and had a great time doing it!

DONE?! REALLY?! NO! But it’s there!

Dungeon Grounds - Intro Logo_0000_Wishdream

In a world covered by endless water…
People are forced to eke out a living on
the small patches of land that remain above
the sea. The people of this world rely on ancient
technology driven by quantum refractors, a powerful energy source.
These refractors lie in ancient ruins underground
and in the sea and are sought out by explorers called Diggers.

But your goal is about to change as you go deeper…

Thanks to the organizers of Ludum Dare for giving me the motivation to finish my first game!

This has been an amazing experience, and I learned a lot about what I am capable of when I’ve got a fire under my ass.

My game is far from perfect, but it’s actually much better than I would have imagined I could do in such a limited amount of time.

Congratz. May this be the first game of many for you. 😀

Made it before the deadline . . .

20 minutes before submission ends and I finally finished a playable game from scratch. It show what gameplay I was going for at the very least I was able to try out a gameplay I haven’t done yet before.

I had fun making a game with LD29. The Theme became a challenge for me. I’ll join again next time.

2587: Screw You ET

I did it. I made a game again. Its set in space and you got to fend of waves of enemies while a drill digs down Beneath The Surface (see what I did there) to plant a bomb. Then it explodes and you can travel to a different planet. It tracks exploded planets, and if you die on a planet it resets.

Overall, I am happy with the outcome and I expect to be fixing many bugs over the next few days. Check out my entry here.

The hand looks odd. It’s the right hand but it’s on the left side of the screen. Trippy.

Game Done…I’m done

This game is more ambitious than the stuff I’ve done before, thus I worked on this one a LOT and it got close to crunch time but I barely got it done.

Check it out HERE. Now time for rest, relaxation, and game-judging, but first sleep. Mmmmm sleeeeep…

Miner Matter

I did it! I turned the simple physics concept into a game! I’m pretty happy with this one.  The pace of the game is a lot slower than I originally planned.  It’s pretty hard to have things all your own way when it comes to physics libraries.  The game is pretty fun, I think. It takes a lot of patience to keep the carts from spilling everywhere but you can’t go too slowly as there is a timer on each level.

titleOpt

The graphics turned out OK.  I think they’re a bit grungier than I would have liked but our hero is down a mine after all.

hoorayOpt

I didn’t have time to add a lot of polish I would have liked:

  • A roof to the mine
  • Support struts
  • Sparks while braking
  • Other minecart trains whooshing around in the background
  • Parallax scroll
  • Any sound whatsoever

But that is always the case when I enter LD :)

Here’s the submission page if you want to try it out

Finished!

The game I ended up with was not what I originally planned (as always…)  but it actually turned out to be a working, fun, hard game!  I didn’t use the best programming practice mainly because I felt pressured, but I wish I could have taken more time to “do things correctly”.  Anyways, check out Cave Ghost: HERE!  Besides, who doesn’t want to play a game with a bit of TNT in it?

Game Finished!

So we finished up our game and posted the entry before the end of the jam so we could get some feedback before tomorrow! This is the third Ludum Dare in a row that I’ve completed and I have been good about getting a game in all the time so that’s a big accomplishment for us. This is another new thing for me with putting in controller support and fully animated windows and transitions, the game feels really complete. 99.9% of all the pieces was made by us (only exceptions being NGUI and Unity as well as some controller images and a font) So without further adieu we give you:

Thanks in advance!

It’s been a good one!

Submitted! :)

LD#48 has finally finished and, as usual, I’m happy to have submitted and a bit sad that it’s over. This time, for a change, I’m mostly satisfied with the end result compared to my previous entries, which probably explains that I still haven’t gone to bed even though in 5 hours I’ll be bumping my head against my desk at work.

We are at a point in time that is further from the next Ludum Dare as can be.

It is done. 14 Hours is possible.

Pfew, 14 sure is less than 48, but still got something done, even with a crash that made me remake stuff for an hour or two.

I introduce “Dig or Die” a somewhat dark/somber post-apocalyptic game:
Survive in the bare tundra, after the rest of the world has nuked each other to pieces.

Game mechanics / UI clarity not 100%, but ok enough. Music literally made in a few minutes.

Now sleep.

Did it!

Yay! Making this took about 10 hours. I hate how late I tend to get ideas.

LD29_delve_4

Evening friends, just submitted Delve which is ready for some playin’ and really curious what you guys think. Not quite sure what to make of it myself. I’m going to post some thoughts on the weekend tomorrow, but for now it’s time to play some games! Thanks everyone for making the weekend super fun!

Aaand…. DONE! In Hiding

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-29/?action=preview&uid=5959

I’m happy with the result. That’s all I can say for now. Will do a post-mortem later of course!

Finally submitted my BTS entry: “Indie: A Text-based Adventure”

I’m probably the only one to do a text adventure for this one. I’m not going to get any points for graphics, and I didn’t get nearly as much content in as I wanted, but still happy overall.

The engine and code quality are actually pretty solid. The MVC pattern could have been applied more consistently.

… And my third LD is complete

This was a great LD for me this year. Regardless of where my game ranks, I had a ton of fun creating it and was very inspired. I’ve also now go the base of what it think could be a really great app that I’m going to explore.

I’m from the UK so LD started at 2am for me but I decided to sleep and start in the morning so I’d be fresh. Soon as I got up I checked the theme and within 5 minutes was coding. It was such an easy transition I got off to a flying start. Not like last year. I really wasn’t into last years theme and it reflected in the game.

I used GM:Studio’s physics engine for the first time during this project and learned it can do some really fun things so I’m looking forward to playing with that more.

You can check out my finished game here and here’s some screen shots. Hope you all had a good weekend and I look forward to playing and rating your games!

Another Ludum Dare – I Learned Stuff

I’ve done a few LD compos in the past. Also one Jam in order to work with a friend. Each time I do them I learn something and this time was no different. Although I didn’t get as much out of this one as I have the previous ones.

My compo started off very slowly. For some reason the theme just wasn’t inspiring any interesting ideas. After two hours of wasted thinking I just went with a mechanic that I wanted to try out in a game. Making it fit the theme came a bit later and it’s a stretch to say the least.

Check out the game if you have a few minutes.

In Kamikaze Dive Bomber you manipulate the internals of your ship (there’s the theme connection – beneath the surface of your ship) which determines what weapon you have for that round. Unfortunately I only had time to get three weapons in the game, but they are all pretty different in the strategy that you have to use to win, which is what I was going for.

Even though the game didn’t turn out as fun as I had hoped and I had virtually no time for polish, I still consider this one a success. It has been too long since I had time to sit down and just make a game for a weekend. That will change soon since Summer is on the way, and this was a great way to get back in the swing of gamedev.

Mini Metro Subway Tycoon – Done in the last hour

The Mini Metro Subway Tycoon is finished!

That is a game where you have to construct underground metro system to unload traffic jams on the surface. Features:

– Random Generated Town (Buildings, Roads, River)

– 1000 people travels to work and back to home

– Real Time Traffic Jam Simulation

– Powerful Tools To Constuct Your Own Metro Subway

Finished this madness in about 30 minutes before deadline. And spent about of a hour after that to clean folders, write readme, pack all into archive and submit entry.

That is madness because about 4 hours before end I had no idea how to implement one hard part of the game. But about 3 hours before end my subconscious brought me a nice solution and I fully implemented it in a hour.

Okay, 2 hours before end but I should implement here yet another big piece of code. Ideas of the not implemented parts were strictly simplified and were done in half of hour.

Good, now is time to taste it and… it’s playable and enjoyable! A hour of playing and balancing and I have not so bad game!

Bad news: No sounds:(

How’d you do the lighting?

Done……….

Ta da

Even though I wasn’t able to do a lot of what I wanted (if that isn’t painfully obvious already), I’m glad I stuck with the concept I picked, as it’s something I probably wouldn’t ever do outside a game jam scenario. The point of LD isn’t just to compete, but it’s to learn, and I think I accomplished that at least. :)

And yeah, the next LD I do is going to be a Jam…I severely underestimated how much having teammateshelps (especially ones who can draw). 😛

Entering day 3

I am entering day 3, in a relatively good spot. The game is playable but there isn’t a goal quite yet, 90% of the mechanics, are in the game in some form or another but the game looks like its going to take a turn in gameplay due to running out of time, I’d love to continue to make it like I had originally planned(a deep sea metroidvainia) but alas If I did, I would run out of time before Monday night.

CONGRATS Solos #LD48 for being done!
I’m super excited to get to play all the wonderful games I’ve been seeing in the updates here and on twitter! And to discover all of the ones that I missed! I can’t decide on what’s more fun, developing my own stuff or experiencing what others have been doing! So congrats to everyone done!

For us in it for the Jam, lets keep at it! An entire day (or well, afternoon after work) to spend on finishing and polishing! It’s been another long day here with more progress and more pixels here. We’ve even got a title screen now!
