7 Ludum Dare Results and Their Graphs

I’ve participated in 7 Ludum Dares now. My first time was in April of 2013. I’ve loved it ever since. It’s one of my favorite events of the year! Below are the Graphs of the Results of all the LDs I’ve been in. And remember, the better the results, the smaller the graphs.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Looks like my best LD Overall was LD 32, Frisbee Training. Although I am super glad with my results for this last LD, Perspective. Top 25 for Innovation is awesome! And Top 100 for Audio is nice too! Thanks for playing and rating my games! All of you that participate in Ludum Dare ROCK! And all of you that aren’t joining in, JOIN IN because you’re missing out! c:

Post Mortem – King Pong, and the Future

My LD33 Compo Entry, King Pong, was hacked together in six hours and as such, was not really meant to be a totally serious entry. I therefore didn’t rate so many of everyone else’s games to keep my coolness low, but I would like to thank the 15 or so people who nevertheless played my game and left feedback :)

Animation from the game King Pong

What went right:

New toys: It was fun to play with my new, cheap art pad. I brought it for a specific project, and this event gave me motivation to learn to use it.

Awesome name: Seriously, I Googled hard to see if it had been used for an LD entry before. I can’t believe I was the first one to come up with this idea.

What went wrong:

Time management: I had a great weekend with family, so I have no regrets about not being able to do a full entry. That said, the game did fall far short of my intended design. I ran out of time just as the game was complete enough to start adding features. If I had one more hour, there would have been impact marks where the car hits the scenery. Another hour and the drop shadows and ball bouncing would be in. Another and the car’s spin would have affected its trajectory.

What will I do in the future?

New tools :) I LOVE Python. I LOVE PyGame. But it is time to see if the greener the grass is on the other side of the fence. I have started doing Unity tutorials, and so far it looks pretty good. I intend using it for…

Entering Mini-LD 62: I have an idea of what I’d like to do for my Final Boss. I have started learning new techniques and technologies. Hopefully I will hit the ground running :)

Hey what Drawing Tablet did you get? i just got an intuos for 50 bucks on sale, works like a charm!

That’s cool. I got a bamboo pad because it was the only cheap model I could get shipped to me. I plan to use it to trace some stuff in a “colouring book” style for a kids party, but it works for game jams too :)

Drack’s Mansion ratings analysis

So the LD scores came in and I decided to give them a bit of thought. For a first timer, not that bad. Here they are:

LD33 resaults

Coolness is good, as I expected. I rated about 85 games which is more than good enough, in my opinion.

38th is where I placed graphics-wise. Considering the fact almost every single comment praised the pixel art, I am not surprised. Highest rated category as I suspected, but breaking the top 40 in any category with your first LD is something pretty kick-ass.

228th in theme. I didn’t do that much creative with the theme outside of the story and set-up, IMO. Yeah, Drack is a billionaire who just bought a mansion and people are bothering him so he kills them, which is a pretty creative idea, but nothing really in the design of him nor the mechanics plays up that fact. I’m surprised I hit as high of a number as this.

281st overall. For a first timer I think that’s very nice. I didn’t expect much more considering how many entries this jam had.

363rd in mood. I think that is mainly due to the Nuclear Throne style lighting system.

367th in fun. Not bad. I expected it to be higher than mood and theme for sure, especially considering the fact many users said it was pretty fun if classic, but not that many said it was that original with its theme.

504th in humour. I had no expectations for this category. The game had a humourous premise but nothing that funny beyond that. I am happy with it, though.

560th in audio. As expected, not high at all. Audio was the one aspect of the game I disliked the most. It had no music and the sound effects weren’t all that great. I did not have time to polish it in that area.

And finally 766th in innovation. The game is classic, especially for Ludum Dare. An endless wave of enemies storm you and you kill them. Not particularly original, is it? I wasn’t aiming for it to be so but if I had known more about LD before going in maybe I would have done something more inventive.

What the scores thought me: there’s a difference between what feedback users give you in comments and your final scores. Many people said that they found it fun, yet very few mentioned the mood or the theme. Despite that theme and mood got placed above fun. For next time, I am definitely placing more focus on time management, brainstorming, prototyping and audio. hopefully, it will make for a better entry.

“there’s a difference between what feedback users give you in comments and your final scores”

No ratings

Is there a reason my game has no ratings?

Is it because I didn’t play enough games? If it is, that’s fine, i’ll keep that in mind for next time. I just didn’t have much time this time.

Or maybe because my game didn’t have enough ratings? That makes sense too, It wouldn’t be fair if a game got 5 stars because it was only rated 4 times

Needs at least 20 ratings I think

Both. You didn’t get ranked because you didn’t get enough ratings (you need at least 20). The easiest way to get ratings, it to rate other games. This makes your game appear on the list of suggested games to rate. So you didn’t get ratings as a consequence of the fact that you didn’t rate games.

This is really discouraging. You did something interesting with cool graphics, you have respected the main theme – in fact, I like your game. I think you could receive a good ranking in another context. Next time, you should do an effort so as to rate other projects. I wish you the best. Don’t give up ++

I really enjoyed your game! I just played it now and got to level 3. The controls sometimes stuck, so I would continue going left after releasing left. Loved the animation of the sheep CHOMPing! Definitely play and rate a game or two every day during the voting week. That’s not a lot of time, and it will get you ranked.

Apologies (Postmortem)

Sorry to anyone who took the time to rate my “game”.. I knocked it up in about an hour before submission time to show a proof of concept.. But it was unfair to ask for ratings for that. I apologise!

So what happened?

Day 1:
On Saturday, I caught the theme and had an idea for an arcade brawler. I was really keen on teaming up with someone, and my friend eventually gave in and said he’d give it a go.. He still wasn’t that convinced to be honest! The august jam always happens to be on my mums birthday, so after some Illustrator work drawing the parts for the dog, I had to travel 3 hours to see her, then take her out shopping for 4 hours.. By then it was about 8pm.. I went over to my friends, and sadly his girlfriend was ill, so we tried not to get in the way too much.. After some much needed guitar solos, we had about an hour of drunken whiteboard brainstorming where he added:

  • Zombies
  • Angels fighting demons in the skies
  • Army guys shootin everyone
  • Tanks
  • Helicopters
  • The dog is a zombie, with spikes and stuff.
  • Hellhounds trailing lava like everywhere, and if you touch it, you get set on fire.
  • And the music would be like a blues version of Thriller.
  • I managed to hold back the bosses turning all 3d and stuff, but by then, day 1 was over, and the requirements list was full loaded.. :)

    It was not a game.

    Day 2:
On the way home, I got some all-you-can-eat breakfast at a Toby Carvery.. Thanks to that and the journey, I finally got home at about 3pm.. So then code could be happenin, son!

I was really keen on working out the animation this LD.. I wanted a skeleton-based keyframe-interpolating animation software.. Because otherwise, entering all those numbers is near-impossible.. Especially where angles are involved.

By the end of the day, I had a program which could have parent nodes of varying sizes and rotations.. Kind of a skeleton keyframe editor really.

    It was not a game.

    Day 3:
I started work on the nodes first thing in the morning, then I was called into work for about 6 hours.. I resumed work at 6pm and by 9pm I had my first interpolated animation of boxdog running.

That was probably the most satisfying achievement, as until that point, I didn’t know if the interpolation would work.

After animation, I made a tool which snipped parts of a jpg image and set those to names. Then I altered my code to use those. it was 00:15 on Tuesday, and I was running out of time.
I made a ready animation, a walk animation (which took the longest), and a jumping animation. It was 2pm. Oddly, the contest was revealed at 3am, but ended at 2am, so I was a little surprised to say the least.

    Hurriedly, I did the following:

  • I copied enough of the code to make the animations work into a new JFrame
  • I tweaked one of the objects to only be visible under certain condition.. The laserbeam eyes when walking.. I found that the coolest part to be honest.
  • I cutout some of the concept art for the dinosaur in gimp
  • I made current animation switch to jumping when W was pressed
  • walk animation on D (moving closer to dinoboy when D was held down)
  • and S to go back to the idle animation.
  • I also made space activate laser eyes, and then the energy runs out over time.
  • It was not a game..

But if you used your imagination, you could imagine the technology turning into a nifty streets of rage clone.. :)

    What went right:
I managed to cobble together enough animation software to interpolate keyframes, which is pretty awesome. I’ve spent a few hours working on it since.. So I can create animations by clicking different keyframes in a list, then compile and test them straight away, then adjust the keyframe timings in the window, rather than notepad. Ideally, I would get it to a usable state so my nephew could make his own animations. My sister and I animated a dancing scarecrow with sound effects, which was pretty fun, so I think this might be more interactive and usable than most of my games.

Animation is usually the last thing I focus on, usually by swapping out two images.. This is quite labor intensive, so I’m glad I ventured into learning about skeletons, etc.

I am also glad I got to show my friend some of what game development is about. It would have been better if I had some code ready by the time we met so he had something tangible to get excited about. In future, I will have the animation software to create any animation resources required.

    What went wrong:
All my responsibilities totally got in the way. I had places to go, people to see! Now I have work to do and then sleep to sleep! I’m sorry I didn’t review any games (boo hiss).. I saw some real exciting screenshots and dev diaries while people were developing, and then it was back to work.

    Monster Results

So monster started when I read one of the themes was “chain reaction”, and I said I got a cool idea that was inspired by the passive level from geometry wars. My original idea had you tossing “coins” in the middle of the road which caused nearby passengers to run into the middle of the street to get it, they run into the invincible mines planted by your minions which causes the whole car crash. It turned out to be a real stinking mess, I dont even know why I left it in the virtual reality setting.

    I’m in for miniLD!

This is my first miniLD. Should be fun. :)

In The Name Of Science – official recap!

My official recap is done! You can find it on my website. Check out a bit of it here:

    PRE-LD

So… around a week before Ludum Dare started, I hopped on IRC to ask for tips. I ended up doing more stuff than asking for tips. Here are the stuff I made during that week:

    • This website!
    • Set up ShareX to easily upload screenshots to this website (thanks LiamLime!)
    • Set up WordPress
    • Made an intro post
    • Forgot about the blog
    • Found out about the Illudumati.
    • Made a post about it.
    • voxel edited the post to say it was all a lie
    • Received a trophy on the LD site
    • Made the illumidati a thing.

So yeah. Probably the most productive week this year.

    The day before Ludum Dare

I was nervous. I can’t say I wasn’t. I was so nervous, in fact, that I dreamed about the announcement (thanks for making that pink. PINK!)

    Yup, it’s pink.

    Ludum Dahray

It had begun. I had to check the theme. I opened the website, and there it was…

    You are the monster

(Sorry, I didn’t have a screenshot of the timer. Shame on me!)

    READ MORE HERE!

    MiniLD – I am in!

Yay MiniLD time! I honestly prefer week-long game jams. Once you take work and other responsibilites into account you end up with about the same number of hours as a 48h jam, but you don’t have to completely drop off the grid for a weekend 😉

For this jam I want to try out Unity for the first time. I think making a Descent-like game would take advantage of the engine’s strengths.

    My stats…

Someone posted this cool tool http://ldstats.info/ajayajayaj that shows you the stats of your game. So, I decided to post them. Here are my ratings.

    ldstats ratings

My graphics has really improved but everything else is not really.

    ldstats standings

Standings are pretty good considering my LD33 game was really rushed. Everything else is going down with the amount of ratings.

How did you make those graphs?
    rnlf
    21. Sep 2015 · 07:03 UTC
What I like to do (and what seems more useful) is to normalize the rank based on the number of participants in my category (jam or compo). I usually just do rank / number_of_participants and end up with a number between 0 and 1, where 0 is better. This allows comparing your results from different LDs better.

    Mini LD – I’m in

Here’s to another round of making fun stuff!

    MiniLD: I’m in

This is my first LD, so I hope I’ll publish something!

    MiniLD 62: I’m in.

I’ve been wondering what to do with my time for a little while now, and just saw that the MiniLD started today. Perfect. I’m a bit rusty, but I’m in!

Is there an “I’m In!” kind of thing for Mini-LD?

    Well, I think I’m in. 😛

Don’t have a clue about what I’m going to do, don’t even know if I’m going to finish something, but let’s see. :)

Gotta finish my #1GAM game first, though. 😀

    Code base forked!

    boot-0125

I’ll need to make some decent meshes.

    Anyway, codebase is here: https://github.com/fanzyflani/mld62

If you actually want to build that, you may wish to point the s3m data to the s3m file in the dat directory – I’m just casually listening to other things in my collection while I nut things out. (Yes, it’s a rather dodgy conversion of a modified version of the .it file.)

    Kungutsu MiniLD entry finished

    IMG_0463

Hey Y’All we finished our MiniLD entry, you need to get yourself a Leap Motion from somewhere for maximum experience in life with Kungutsu.

    miniLD62: started

I’ve started working on level design and intend to work on weapon/enemy design soon enough. Hopefully this time I’ll learn from my mistakes and ignore tech development for the purpose of allocating more art/design time.

There are 2 characters. X to talk. Arrow keys to walk. Q to close game.

    good luck :)

    We’re in!

Never done a mini LD before. We were aching to try our hand at a 2d game, so we wanna try to get something done. Got something fun in store!

Any 2d animators around in need of a group? Hit me up!

    MiniLD Time

I’m in for the MiniLD again, and I have got so many ideas that I want to try. I think I might actually attempt something involving Dyatlov Pass, or something like that, I dunno. I’m feeling ambitious. Also, I will be using Unity as usual.

    mLD62 – progress report 1

Implemented character controller, weapon basics and 3D-ish HUD, fixed some bugs.

Also I’ve designed one enemy so there should be some basic shooting gameplay implemented soon.

    2015-09-23_enemy1

The idea is to create a warm-up/tutorial section and the boss fight would come right after it.

    Boss fight : concept art

The game in itself is progressing slowly, but at least I have the character designs ready to be turned into final sprites.

Here are some pictures of the concepts!

Mini Dare – As Yet Untitled

    Hi all!

We decided we’d give the mini dare a shot since we had such a blast finishing up our first ever game Cleanup of the Black Lagoon.

So – we approached this one slightly differently. Rather than fighting a final boss or playing the final boss, you are but one small cog in the final bosses plan.

I don’t want to share too much (we’re almost finished, honest *cough*) but here some fantastically rough concept art (I like to not plan too much because improvisation!) and a current screenshot of the main play screen.

We’re really looking forward to sharing our game with you all and continuing to contribute to this awesome community.

    Peace

    RPG game system demo!

Wah! i did coded an RPG game system! only dialogue and inventory but giving items and options show up if you did needed actions stuff are done. I can just edit the XML and change everthing about an option! Maybe its not something that big but to me it feels like i coded a complete engine. Anyway here is the demo. Dialogs are too simple and meaningless but shows all of the features! Space: pickup/talk Arrow keys: walk. Q: Quit R: Restart. Just wanted to post it somewhere!

    This mastiff brings damnation
    Like 0101 dalmatians

    Hack raising hackles

    Made a game for Duplicade!

    What is DUPLICADE?

We want you to make one (or more) short, player vs. player games, 30 seconds, win or lose, just like last year’s BARFCADE, but this year, we want you to populate the outlaw flea markets of our minds with knockoffs and bootlegs of other games that are just weird enough to not get you sued.

Quote from the jam site on itch.io.

This jam was for local 2-player-one-keyboard versus games only, with pre-specified controls!

You can probably guess which game I picked!

And now I think I’ll whip something together for MiniLD #62 while I still have the time! 😀

    DaBoss – WIP

Struggling to get DaBoss up and running for mini LD 62.

It’s a bit complex trying to make a massive end of level boss.

So going for giant tentacled robot.

    wipScreenShot1

So it should look a bit like this enemy*.

If I can get it to work?

    Wish me luck!

*Note will not include The Incredibles [TM].

Will there be an October Challenge?

The title pretty much says it all. I’d like to know if there will be an October Challenge? A little prep and some time sheduling would be quit handy for such a long event.

I’m guessing that someone will give me an answer :) , so I already say:

    SDL2 joystick interrogator (third version)

Interrogating a Sony PlayStation 2 DualShock 2 controller; I've yet to figure out why SDL2 reports that the DualShock 2 has five axes (although my PlayStation-to-USB adapter might be to blame), I've yet to figure out a solution – which doesn't involve a ⅓ axis dead zone – to the problem of the thumbsticks on the DualShock 2 not always returning all the way to the origin when they're released, and I last touched a DualShock 2 a long, long time ago so I'd forgotten that the D-pad is disabled in analogue mode :/

I recently rebooted development of a project I tried to develop for the Ludum Dare 20 contest held in April 2011, the theme of which was “It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this!”

As the project will require a controller with an analogue stick to play I’ve begun to develop a utility to interrogate the capabilities of various controllers – and as I feel that the SDL2 documentation is lacking with regards to the joystick support offered by that library I’ve posted to my blog the source code to the third version of that utility, for the benefit both of myself and of others.

    No Mini-LD here

I had an idea for the mini-LD, but unfortunately what I didn’t have was time to work on it.  I barely got started, and the mini-LD is almost over, so I’m giving up.  However, I may complete the idea at a future time anyway, since I like it.

    Progress update on Taurus!

Now my miniLD entry has a name, the sprites have been  vectorized, and some programming is already done and finished.

Switching from Construct2 to Unity went better than expected! It’s actually very satisfying to have way more control over the whole process.

Here’s a little update in pictures, before the next updates (which should show more of the gameplay, if everything goes fine) :

    [MiniLD 62] Game finished!

    1

So I just finished my game! I’ll go to sleep and tomorrow I’ll check for bugs.

    [Mini LD #62 – Complete]

    Play Eyezor

    View post on imgur.com

I’ve finally gotten the time to submit my game, Eyezor. It was a blast making this even though it really only took a few days. I’m glad about how it turned out. The art this time compared to Ludum Dare 33 is much better, audio not so much since I tried to make it different that HAX0R from LD 33.

I hope those that play it enjoy it!

    Imposition – finally finished

The game is finally somewhat finished. Didn’t quite get to implement all I wanted but the boss fight seems to be scary enough, and hopefully I’ve improved on my game-player communication skills. But I’ll let you be the judge of that.

"Now how do I get out of here?!?"

“Now how do I get out of here?!?”

Be sure when you get to the spot with the anagram letters, that you guess which words are needed by changing the letters to the correct letter in ABC order according to what the “?” letter would be. After you solve that one, you should be able to walk up to discover which door will lead you to the outerspace challenge.

And, my deepest apologies. The boxes, when put where they belong, still don’t do anything. I forgot to put in the reward. Its not like I had time anyway, but still. Sorry!

Used: VX Ace. File size is 193mb due to Ace.

    Thanks for all your feedback!

    Hey guys! (October Challenge)

Hey guys! I haven’t really been around here lately, but I thought I might post something for the October Challenge. I had aforementioned that I would be participating in LD 33, but that resolution fell through. I was too caught up with my current project, (the one I’m thinking of entering.)

The game that I think I’m going to be entering is a text adventure with a bit of modern zest. It uses lots of music, and it’s even got some graphics thrown in there! Here, marvel at its uniqueness:

    PlayerWebThumbnail

Did I mention it was called The Player? Anyway the game plays around with the idea of meta-fiction, and I don’t want to say anything for sure, because the game concept is still kind of up in the air, but, maybe also the idea of video games being a virtual escape from reality? I don’t know, the story isn’t set in stone yet.

Anyway, here’s a snapshot of what I’ve been writing:

    Screenshot 2015-09-23 18.02.28

P.S It’s not actually this blurry, I just re-sized the image so it would show up in the post nicely.

Yeah. So anyway, the happy days of summer are long past me, and now I’m rushing to finish my game before the IGF deadline, (did I mention I was entering my game into that?) It’s all crazy, and I have school too, so I’m just trying to finish it all up.

Anyway, I just wanted to make a quick post to organize my thoughts. Everything seems kind of crazy. I’m glad to be back in the community, and, I don’t know… Maybe come October 26th I’ll have a cool game to show you guys! :)

Good luck on all your projects!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    First post

Hi there. You can call me Simon, since that’s my actual name.

I have a passion and a dream to make games and share them to the world, I find happiness in making people happy playing my game, and see good feedback.I have a dream to make a game which will go viral but of course that is way above my level.I joined ludum dare so I can practice and share my games with everyone, and who knows gain fans to.

What are you planning to make?

I’m a fan of making rpg games, which are filled with lore easy to access and open world action games.I’m looking to make indie games for a start, but my favorite are fantasy games, I currently already wrote out docs of what my first game will be like, but I don’t want to give out anything yet.

    Thank you.

Mirror Mortis – full version releases Oct 30th!

    PostHeader

    screenshot1

Mirror Mortis was born as “Miroir du Mort” in Ludum Dare 32. The jam version got a lot of great feedback from the Ludum Dare community and there was more we wanted to explore with the concept, so since then, @amymja and I have been working on an expanded version. We’re happy to say it’s coming along well, and in the spooky spirit of Halloween we’ll be releasing the full version on itch.io on October 30th! This’ll also be our submission to the October challenge.

Aside from being a fully rounded-out game experience, Mirror Mortis includes lots of puzzles and new enemies to fight (including boss battles!), and an explorable world with several unique areas.

We’ll be posting more throughout the month as we get closer to launch, so follow myself and @amymja for updates. Thanks for supporting the original jam version – without your feedback we wouldn’t have been able to take this game as far as we have! :)

Get Sky Cruiser! – October Challenge game

Sky Cruiser can be summed up in one line: Flappy Bird meets Sky Kid.

Sky Cruiser takes inspirations from both the mobile cult hit Flappy Bird and the old Namco NES/Arcade classic Sky Kid. Cut the skies with your Red Flyjet and destroy other Flyjets, Green Caterpillars, Red Pokers, Ghosts and Aliens.

Try to survive as long as possible! Share your hiscore file (save.ini) with friends!

Uses Kenney assets: Tappy Plane, Platformer Redux, Space Shooter Redux
Flap key is reconfigurable, press CTRL+Y, default key is space

    Postmortem: Monsterhythm

This is the postmortem for the game I made in two days for the Ludum Dare 33. The game is called “Monsterhythm”. You can find the Ludum Dare entry page here and you can play it here.

    Monsterhythm gif

As a first game jam experience, it have been (really) great. The other jammers were very supportive, and you could breath the creativity and positiveness around. I’m sure I will join a game jam again in the near future.

About the game itself, overall I’m quite happy with the results I got. People liked the game, and it got a solid three stars in all the categories (except Audio): Ratings-Monsterhythm

Seeing it now, it is quite remarkable I managed to end the game. Lot of things went wrong. Things that went wrong
    • Working with a tool and a language without any previous experience. So far, my knowledge is limited to iOS (Objective-C and SpriteKit), but since a game developed on that platform is not shareable, I had to choose between the new Pico-8 (Lua) or Unity (C#).

I chose the former because it looked pretty easy (and it is), but there were two downsides: first, there is almost no documentation about how to work with it (except the superb Pico-8 fanzine); and second, I had zero experience with anything different than SpriteKit (or Cocos2D for that matter).

The result: I used the whole Saturday only to get a shallow understanding of how Pico-8 and Lua works. No progress whatsoever. By the end of the day, I was resolved to stop, because what I learned so far wasn’t enough to program the game I had in mind. Basically, I knew how to deploy a sprite, but not how to destroy it (yes, yes, I know).

After getting a good sleep, I decided that instead of deploying the magic fireballs and destroying them once out of the screen, I will move them normally and then put them back to the starting point once is needed. That decision made the game possible, in the end: it was ugly, and the game was not exactly what I had in mind (several slower fireballs VS only one fast fireball), but it worked.
    • Sound didn’t feel right: This is quite bad, because it goes against the name and the theme of the game. My idea was to assign a different drumbox sound for each magician (the upper magician is a kick, the second a snare, and so on), and a musical sound the monster. I was expecting that deploying an interesting attack pattern for the enemies, plus the movement of the monster would produce automatically something nice to hear. I was wrong. It (somehow) works, but it doesn’t feel right, and the problem is I can’t imagine how to make it work. Again, my lack of experience (with sound design, in this case) played against myself.
    • Not leaving enough time for polishing the experience: although my idea was to prepare a nice pattern (after that, that pattern is what define this game), I didn’t had enough time left. The result: a game too hard from the very beginning. The entry barrier is too high for almost any player (even the more skilled ones), and that made a lot of people leave the game too early. A slower start and a crescendo would have been much, much better.
    What went right
    • Choosing a known game design. Monsterhythm is very similar to my other game, Phobos Children: a pattern of orbs move through the screen, and you have to do something with them (clear them by groups of three on Phobos Children, in Monsterhythm just avoid them). I knew how to program that (because I did it before), and it allowed me to guess how the gameplay will feel once finished (in the end it’s very similar to a Game&Watch, so it’s easy to grasp by anyone).
    • Choosing Pico-8 for the development. Very easy, very fast to work with, powerful in its own way and shareable, I just can say: go and buy it.
    • The theme itself. I tried to make something visually similar to a Japanese RPG with some twists, and I think that connected with the players. The dancing monster got a lot of good words in the comments. The game looks nice, but this, more than anything, is a merit from Pico-8 palette and their limitations. Almost anything looks cute there.
    • The stamina counter for the enemies. It gives a final goal to the player, and a idea of how much time is left to the end. Also, showing the time after dying gives the player a reference to surpass for the next play.
    • I limited the scope to the very minimum. No intro, no ending (but a “You Win” banner), nothing out from the game itself. That allowed me to reach the next bullet point:
    • I finished the game! Really proud of this one. It works giving a complete experience to the player. Although too hard, It’s easy to understand and easy to play, and with enough practice is beatable.
How to continue the game I think Monsterhythm can become a nice free game for mobile devices with some twitches, like a “close call” combo and some extra stages/difficulties (even including a pattern editor on the bundle); but I’ll only continue it if I guess how to work with the sound, since is the main theme of the game. If anybody reading this have any idea regarding the sound design, please contact me through twitter: @danialias.

Thank you for reading, and hope to see you in a future game jam!

    Architect Of Terror #LD33 Post-Mortem

Oh my, it’s late, but better late than never :) This is the postmortem for the game Architect Of Terror I made in three days for the Ludum Dare 33. Note: this postmortem contains spoilers. You should play it before if you didn’t do yet, it’s an unusual (and maybe disturbing) experience!

    screenshot

    Ratings:
    #91 Innovation(Jam) 3.76
    #117 Mood(Jam) 3.81
    #117 Theme 4.00
    #128 Overall 3.77
    #207 Fun 3.52
    #618 Graphics 3.19
    #1627 Coolness 40%

    What went right:

    – This was a challenging Ludum Dare experience because I had never made a game with Unity before. Before the Ludum Dare , I had only followed the 3 first Unity tutorials (Roll a ball, Space shooter and Survival) and had played with it one or two hours. And yet I shipped a working game in time, which was roughly like I wanted. I had read before that one should not start Ludum Dare without knowing its tools… I’d reply that it depends! (in the other hand I had more than 7 years of professional experience in development, so C# was not a difficult step for me).

    – I did a game in a weekend but I also did other stuff as well – partly because my girlfriend would have been unhappy to see me hooked on the computer the whole time. I still found maybe less than 15 hours of working on it, which is not that much for a Jam, and yet, like I said, I shipped a working game in time, which was roughly like I wanted.

    – Unity physics engine did a really good job. Sometimes unexpected bugs becames features, like for example red people “shaking” of excitement when you talk to them on the tribune. Sometimes simple tricks gave a really good impression, like red people following a yellow victim, giving the impression to push or even lift it.

    – The game theme and main idea went quite quickly, and the game ideas went progressively during development. I though as first to make a more explicit reference to Nazism, but my girlfriend suggested to change this, and I think it’s a good idea because it makes the game more universal.

    – In the end, the ratings results show an improvement compared to my previous (first) ludum dare game, yay!

    What went wrong:

    – Nothing really important. I got some trouble in the end because I think the source code was going a little bit confusing and Unity physics engine wasn’t exactly always behaving like I was expecting, and as such I took some time in displacing source code functions and doing trial-and-error tests. I was also not really sure about things like “do you have to go back to the tribune to activate the prison” or “how many blue people do you have to convince to activate bullying mode”, etc.

    – I didn’t get enough time to add either music or sound. But that may have been complicated anyway to find something fitting the game.

    – After the Jam, I didn’t get enough time to test that many games, or didn’t put enough time in it, to be honest. As a result my Coolness score is clearly below the rest.

    How to continue the game:

I’m not sure about this, I could of course add some music or sound. But anyway I don’t know, because of the somewhat sensible theme of the game, I’m not sure it would be fitted for commercialization anyway (maybe it has to remain free, to show people how manipulation and terror may gain ground).

What Have My Jam Game Become? Turncoat Protocol!

Duty Awaits - Even In Death

After LD 33 I have been busy adding even more glitches and content to my entry What Have I Become, a horror puzzle game that is a blend between The Matrix and Wargames. In the process the name also changed to Turncoat Protocol since I think this is a more exciting title that reflects the cyperpunkish feel and look of the game.

    182884   182886

Turncoat Protocol is of course more polished than the jam version but more importantly the narrative should be easier to comprehend now. You can give the WebGL build a go or download a standalone version over at Gamejolt.

Let me know what you think! There’s a lot I’d still like to add to the game but I had to move on to my new secret project. Looking forward to share what that is sometime soon!

From Ludum Dare to Steam Greenlight!!

    Hello fellow gamedevs,

we started working on our game “Of Carrots And Blood” almost a year ago at LD31. Back then it was a nice little prototype and a couple of you liked the gameplay and art style. So we thought, why not put more time in it and work on a post jam version with more features. We did that and finished a little game, which has been played by a couple of youtubers, including these two cool Brazilians (video here) and PewDiePie (video here) and we got even more positive feedback from people…That made us realize that maybe there is more to this little idea. We just couldn’t stop working on it 😉

So now we are at a point, where the old free version of the game became the “Classic Edition” and our new version for “Of Carrots And Blood” is now on Steam Greenlight!! 😀

After one week we are currently at 44% to the Top 100 and we need your support!

    October Challenge Work

I’m remaking my LD32 entry Quest for the Golden Spork for October Challenge. On the surface, the only thing that’s been changed is the UI design and the addition of a save feature. The new version will have significantly more levels, so I thought saving would be necessary. The new UI is more clean and minimalist.

    screenshot7 screenshot4

Most of the work so far has been on the code architecture. Coding at midnight will not leave you with a maintainable codebase. :) Besides the previously mentioned level additions, most art will be re-designed, and gameplay will be improved.

    October Challenge Release

Infinity Dash has been on the Google play store for a few months now, however in light of the October challenge, I decided to attempt to monetise my App. To do this was a challenge, I didn’t want people to have to pay for the app, since it was already released as free, so I decided adverts were the best way to go. I have already met my goal of $1, however I wish to earn the price of the Google play developer account license back(which is about $25).

    I would be really grateful if you could play my game, however I would be even more so, if you shared it with friends and family, since I would really like to hear feedback on other people enjoying the stuff I make(it is great motivation to do better next time);

Here is the link to the page on the play store:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.JosephGilesCooper.InfinityDash

Have fun, and feel free to leave a review and some feedback. I made this for everyone to play and am open to suggestions on where to improve and what I have done well. If you have read this far, many thanks and I hope that with your help I can create a much better gaming experience for everyone, with the games I create.

    Cheers!!!

By the way, I forgot to mention that this app is also available on the amazon appstore.

I am currently rolling out an update which improves the highscore feature and fixes a few bugs. These updates should definitely be live by 2:30pm GMT+1. Once again many thanks.

Ludum Dare October Challenge – Update 3

Added a fast forward function to the game, and this is a preview for Level 3! (The first real level!) Once I have this level done, and I have a basic main menu working, I’ll be posting the game for people to play… somewhere. Probably on Itch.io with both an HTML5 iframe and Desktop Download!

    Piet, my October Challenge Game

Didn’t you always wonder what would happen if you’d cross Mondrian with Simon Says?

    Bigicon

I made Piet for another jam (the theme was “minimalism”), and decided to put it in the play store with some ads for the October Challenge. Since I didn’t have a dev account before, I guess I need to earn $26 to win the challenge. :(

I have posted about this before but still have earned very little downloads and want to try to reach out to as many people as possible. My game is still hard to find by searching it’s name, but I have gotten fairly high with other searches using some SEO. If you would like to, I would be very happy for you to try my game! I just really need some downloads to get higher in the search rankings. Recently, I made an update where you can create custom levels and share them with friends. I soon will make a server to upload levels to and will make a graphics revamp. Right now they are not the best. But, I am not the best artist either. Anyway, please check it out and let me know what you think. Here are some pics.

    Thanks!

Well the October Challenge is aimed at selling a game, but I’d say selling an app is also a great achievement nonetheless. Go for it :)

October challenge game: World of Shadows

    Story:
You are the only survivor of a supernova. Now the entire world is covered in shadows. Also, you have it all to yourself.

    Theme:

    October Challenge

Hello guys! After my first Ludum Dare that I finished(which was the last one, the #33) I decided I was going to release a game by December, but then, the challenge came.

So I thought, well, why not use this opportunity to combine the #1GAM theme with this challenge and also release my first game? And that’s what I did. I came up with a simple top-down 2D game where you’re a cop and you have to prevent rioters to get into the city hall of your city. You have a baton to hit them and a gas bomb, a pepper spray and a rubber bullet weapon.

So after a few weeks, I finally finished. The art is bad because, well, I’m not an artist but I’m trying to get better at it aaaaand that’s pretty much it, I guess.

If any of you wanna take a look, here’s the link:

Feedback is always good so don’t be shy!

    October Challange! – Light Labyrinth

finalcover2I’ve release my game into the itch.io game store so i can take part in this challange!

It became 2nd on an Innovative Competition, so I’m quite happy with it!

    October Challenge try ! “BOOM!”

    Hey!

I just uploaded my super-experimental text game “BOOM!” !!

    SO SCARY!

While the game is actually completely free, there is a pretty “Support This Game” button under it! It’s the first game I upload with a way to support me financially.
Even if you don’t want to or can’t support me, it’s totally OK but please do let me know what you think about the game! As I said, this is highly experimental and I am very interested in any remarks you might have on it!

    Thanks!
    Be safe!

    Escape from the Bunker

    Bunker

So as to win the october challenge I must sell one copy of my game – a little FPS in a randomized maze. I finished, fixed and released my project on Itch.io – also you can download all games which are on my page for free (see others by clicking the link at the bottom of the page – View all by Geckoo1337). By waiting the next LudumDare, I have did something from an old project. I hope to receive just one buck for what I have did so as to validate my participation. See you later for the next LD session. My friends – I wish you the best ++

    October Challenge attempt 2

Since Piet, the game I originally submitted for the October challenge has yet to earn a single penny (and cost me $25 to submit to the play store), I doubled down and made another game. :) Odds are I won’t make anything with this one either, but at least now each game only cost me $12.5 😛

    feature

Meet Galaxy Launch. It’s not quite as pretty as Piet, but it’s a whole lot more fun to play. :)

Does LibGdx require those permissions? Just wondering because I was considering trying it out. Right now I use the normal Android library but I wanted to try to try it so I could export to IOS.

    October Challenge: Bionic 1.0.0 Alpha

    Hello devs,

I posted here about the alpha version of my game, Bionic, a couple weeks back (and this is not an accidental post like a couple nights ago). The game is a multiplayer fps, and I’ve spent time on my own putting it together over the past year or so. My deadline is today, so here are links to my precious game (that you can check out for free):

I’ve entered it in the October Challenge… hopefully I can earn $1! ☺

There’s bound to be many problems related to networking… so please tolerate any inconvenience for now. I will continue to add to the game in the afternoon, when I am not busy.

Find me on Twitter and Facebook and expect an event to play with me this weekend. Thanks for reading, enjoy!

Tactical Superiority 1.0 – October Challenge

    Screen5

It took a good month and a half to get it all done. The October challenge came as a bit of a bonus, I wasn’t even aware of it until last week. It did help pushing it out, deadlines can be a fine thing indeed.

    Play it here

Stereoscopic tunnel for October Challenge 2015

    stereotunnel icon

    Hello fellow ludum-dare-ers!
So I split my october in half, wanting to maximize on my chances of crossing the finish line with *something* that makes $1.

First half I cleaned up and fixed a hack I’ve made a few years back. It’s not exactly a game, but it’s got 3D graphics so close enough for me; it’s a stereoscopic 3D tunnel effect. Made a cool menu GUI for it, fixed a couple of stupid bugs, and uploaded to the iOS app-store as free with ads, which was a very enlightening experience.
Turns out, I was done with the code first week of october, but only managed to get it approved, with ads running, 2 days ago! So lesson learned: if I want to release something on the appstore, and have it up at a specific point in time, do it a month early :)

I also decided to release the code under the GNU GPLv3, because what I’ve ended up with, is a very nice example (I think) of a simple UNIX make-based build system for building cross-platform mobile apps. This code currently builds on PC (linux/mac at least, I think also windows but haven’t tested), iOS and Android. iOS has it’s own xcode project (included), but everything else builds from my makefile.

    Github source code
iOS appstore page (or search for “stereoscopic tunnel” on the store on an iOS device).

Please check it out if you have an iOS device (it’s free with ads), because right now I’ve just made 40 cents off the ads, and I want to hit the full glorious dollar by the end of october to feel like I’ve accomplished the October challenge :)

The second half of october I was making an actual game. It’s obviously not done, but I’ll extend my own personal october challenge to november, because I really want to release this before the holidays, as it’s an xmas-themed game. I’ll edit this post with extra info if I ever manage to finish, release it and make money out of that one. For now I’ll leave you with a development screenshot:

    just testing something

hey guys just testing a local rss scraper so i can stay up to date on ludum dare posts without coming to the site

    Excited for the december LD!

    EDIT:

Sweet its working. Link For Download if anybody wants a copy

It is written in python and requires BeautifulSoup and Requests

I just have it running silently every 10 minutes on my linux media box and rssowl linking to the box from my windows pc.

Currently it is just creating the ldfeed.xml file in the current working directory. If you want a specific location you will have to change line 40

LD needs an rss for EVERYTHING lol

    Pancake Flipper (October Challenge)

pancakeflipper.logo.coloredFeel like there’s not enough crazy pancake action in your life? Well you’re lucky! I have just the game for you 😉

Master the fine arts of pancake flipping. Can you sort stacks of pancakes with the minimum amount of flips? Hone your skills in pancake flipping and get a three star rating!

The current demo is available for windows, mac and linux. An android version is already in development. I hope you enjoy it!

Check out my entry page or head over to my itch.io page.

    October challenge ends

    Bunker

Hi folks! The october challenge 2015 ends in twelve hours and I didn’t earn THE dollar which could be enough so as to validate my participation. More than hundred views on Itch.io, more than forty downloads and nothing has been earned. So you have the opportunity to make my day. My games are available for free on Itch.io and you can name your own price for it – give me one buck and I pray for your soul :)

Escape from the Bunker is a little FPS. You are in the middle of nowhere, trying to escape from this place, fighting against many cute enemies. Find into these randomized bunkers the exit – the blue light. Time plays against you. Your main weapon is able to attract skulls and throw it so as to do some damage on your enemies. The golden skull is the best way so as to kill them. Try it if you dare. I wish you the best. See you later ++

    Escape from the Bunker

PS : Finally I did a release for Linux which is available on Itch.io

OK , So the name of my game is ‘Alien Planet’. It is top down shooter game. It’s a game about a man who accidentally teleports into another universe where the planets are themselves organisms and we fall into the prey of one of the organisms. It’s a kind of a rage game too.

As much as I want this to work. I don’t really see where you have your niche or target audience. Because anybody who is willing to pay for games, will go to steam (or similar) and get their finished ‘quality’ games there, and anybody wanting to play games for free goes to a flash game site (or similar).

And for the indie marketplace, sites like itch.io (which is probably your strongest contestor) are making a strong appearance.

Bionic Update – October Challenge Completed

My game, Bionic, has completed the October Challenge on itch.io recently, thanks to the generous customer!

    October Challenge: Rocket Racer

Rocket Racer just earned it’s first dollar which means that I’ve completed my first October Challenge!  Woo!!!

Rocket Racer is not your conventional racing game, instead of trying to reach an arbitrary finish line, your mission is to nuke all the infected planets as quickly as possible!  Disarm other rockets by striking them at great speed and even using your nuke on other players!

The Mammoth: A Cave Painting now an open-source Android Experiment

Our Ludum Dare 33 entry The Mammoth has been chosen by Google to be featured on their showcase for interesting Android content, androidexperiments.com! This is a site not just for finding interesting apps for your phone, but also learning from them: everything there is open-source. So we decided to go for it!

Download the source for The Mammoth on Github!

Check out The Mammoth on Android Experiments!

The game was made in the 3 days of the game jam, but we did create some basic frameworks for 2D sprite animation and AI flocking systems beforehand, which we used as a basis for the game (along with Unreal Engine 4, of course). That said, the code isn’t of the highest quality, but hopefully it is interesting to people who aren’t familiar with UE4 and how you can go about making a 2D game in 3 days with the engine. Feel free to hack it up and do whatever you like with it! Alternatively, you can watch the timelapse of the code being written:

We had so much fun making The Mammoth that we decided to keep working together as inbetweengames, and launched as a 3-person studio about a month ago. We’re hard at work on our first non-jam game, but we’ll be back for Ludum Dare 34 in December! In the meantime, check out The Mammoth on PC, OSX, Android, iOS or in your browser, and of course, follow us on twitter.
