LD30 August 22–25, 2014

Obligatory In Post

This will be my 5th LD, and I’ve been looking forward to it forever! I’m really liking the themes up for voting so far – especially Connected Worlds, Day and Night, End of the Road, Everyone Is a Monster, For Science!, Labyrinth, Limited Capacity, No Way In No Way Out, Points of View, Rise and Fall, Strange Physics, and The Power of Machines. Off the cuff I can think of several cool things one could do with any of these.

Not so wild about It’s a Trap!, You Must Leave It Behind, and No One Can See You, because they practically prescribe a genre. But so far I don’t see any theme that would be truly awful from my perspective (YMMV). In any case, I have been surprised by the chosen theme every single time so far, which just reaffirms the notion that the theme is nothing worth sweating over during this week. We’ll make it work whatever it is :)

So excited to be in, this time I’ll try for the Compo (again) if time management permits.

My tools / platforms will probably be:

  • Gaming platform: web browser
  • IDE: some text editor on OS X
  • Libraries: probably just jQuery, maybe Three.js or Kinetic.js if appropriate
  • Audio editing: Audacity
  • Music: Garage Band
  • Image editing: Pixelmator or Gimp
  • 3D editing: Cinema 4D or Blender
  • Create input: provided by cat

I’ll probably stick with the decision from last time not to do a live screencast, since it really seems to break my concentration even though I know nobody’s really watching. 😉 But there will be a screenshot timelapse and probably a few progress videos, as with anything I do and write here, more for my own documentation than anything else.

I’ll try to be in…

I will try my best to find some time to enter but I am away for most of Saturday and Sunday. I hopefully will have evenings free, and maybe an hour or two in the morning on Sunday but I unsure at the moment. If I have anything then I can submit it Monday, but again I’m not sure I’ll have the time. If I do participate then I will use….

Language: Java,

IDE: Eclipse,

Libraries: None,

SFX: sfxr,

Music: Musescore, Audacity,

Art: Paint.Net

And I think that’s it, yay

I’m in too!

I saw a lot of these “I’m in” so i must write one too!

My first Ludum Dare, i am really excited :)

I will be using:

– Lua (with Love2D)

–  Vim (so good!)

– Gimp

Maybe music will be the hardest part…

Good Luck!!!!! :D

Edit : i have started a little code base so here it is: https://github.com/thbu/LoveUtilities

I’m in

Looking forward to this weekend. Will be using GameMaker: Studio again.

Here’s a list of handy articles that I’ve written on using GameMaker.

In addition to my usual helpful tutorials that I’ve published over at csanyk.com, I’ve recently begun publishing assets on the GameMaker Marketplace:

  • mmap mini maps is a $4.99 asset that provides a powerful, easy to use mini map feature for your game, capable of simulating a Radar or Sonar screen
  • Simple Performance Test (free) is a stub project that you can use to test the performance of two blocks of GML to determine which is faster. GM:S has a profiler built in to the debugging features, but if you don’t feel like learning to use it, or just want to set up a quick comparison that is easily repeatable and can be shared, it’s an option to consider.

I’m In!

I do have to work one of the days but otherwise I think I should have enough time to make something!

Editor: Sublime Text

Engine: HaxeFlixel

Sound: JFXR, Logic

Graphics: Photoshop

Good luck everyone!

I’m In (Another Tired and Narcissistic Announcement Post)

The mighty, infallible Snoother emerges once more into his sunlit arena of triumph. After the resounding success of his last entry, Beneath the Surface, he honours his colourful assortment of omnipresent fans by announcing his second involvement with Ludum Dare.

Okay okay. The more apt description is perhaps one employed by none other than Bertie Wooster: “like a fairly diffident snail poking its head out of its shell during a thunderstorm.” Ludum Dare is frightening, tense, thunderous. And I’m the nervous, timid sort who nevertheless can’t help but take on the challenge.

Plus, it was just so damn enjoyable and rewarding last time round. For once I actually completed a project, rather than them just being little Catholic embryos stranded in limbo. (Yes, I know the church reversed its policies to allow babies into Heaven. The church is compassionate like that. Just look at this current pope. He thinks I should be treated with dignity — well how nice of him! Just because you’re more liberal than Islam doesn’t make you moral. Rant over.) The game wasn’t too shabby either. Admittedly, I think it did a bit better than it should have because of its immediate shock value, but still, for my first compo I was (and am) pretty proud.

So I’ll be entering the compo again if all goes to plan, and once more I’ll be using Twine, a tool for authoring hypertext games.

Of the themes put forward so far, the following seem to furnish my mind with inspiration: Connected Worlds; No One Can See You; You Must Leave it Behind; Isolation; Love; The Other Side; This Happens to Me Every Day. I think it’s obvious that I tend towards the more narrative-friendly and potentially-emotive ideas. But that’s just my thing. I am, after all, a pompous-as-fuck hypertext author — albeit not a particularly good one.

Right. I’m excited about this. And actually, I can’t wait to see what others produce, perhaps even more so than seeing what I produce. Last time I played so many fabulous entries and had a wonderful time doing so. This time will doubtless be no different.

I’m in

Simple post. Java/ Android for the coding, the rest I will see throughout development 😉

I’m in!

Alright, I’m in for my second LD – it’s been too long since my last one.

I’m thinking Game Maker: Studio for this, but I may decide to do Flixel …

In any case I’ll also use:

  • Photoshop/Illustrator
  • Audacity
  • AS3SFXr
  • Maybe a scanner and some pen/paper

Think I’m in

Pretty sure I can find a little time,  but not not much.

Will most likely use Monkey-X, Fireworks, sfxr/bfxr, Blender.

UPDATE: think I’ll be using Unity this time around.  I’ve now learned just enough to be dangerous :)

Just curious, this idea may come in handy in my game

I was having some ideas on what kind of game i could do to this LD, which is going to be my first (wish me luck!), so it came in my mind that an easy to do, and well recieved game i could [censored idea =D]. To do that, i would need a mySQL connection outside of the game, and all i wanted to know was: am i allowed to connect the finished game to a database in my web domain? And if i am, do i need to include the code i used to return values from the DB?

Help is appreciated.

Sure – why shouldn’t you be allowed to use your database? And yes, if you’re doing the compo, all code needs to be included. (You can and should leave username/passwords strings etc. empty though.)

Hey, thanks for the reply, it will sure help. I hope other people here will like what i have in mind for my entry.

Pity you didn’t hand it in, you managed to pick my curiosity. What did you plan to do?

I’m in ~ My first LD!

I’ve been looking forward to participating in this Ludum Dare for a while now, as it will be my first time participating! As a somewhat newer programmer, we will see how this turns out for me. I’m seeing some great themes being passed around, so it looks like it’ll be an exciting LD for everyone.

As for what all I will be using:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Libraries: LWJGL

SFX: sfxr

Music: Audacity, FL Studio

Art: Photoshop CS6

I think that just about sums it all up, looking forward to it guys. Can’t wait to see everyone’s creations!

My own practice weekend

Today I challenged myself to create a game in 6 hours. While it doesn’t have the polish that a 48 hour challenge gives me, it has playable content, and its kinda fun.

The topic was suggested by @LucasZenenga from the Round 1 voting, and it was “Rise and Fall”.

I created a lunar lander style game with some decent terrain and a really crappy boxy model. The flight mechanics are good, and it challenges you to find all 12 platforms on the moon, without running out of fuel or oxygen.

Controls:

  • Space: Upward Thrust
  • WASD: Movement
  • Arrow Keys: Pitch and Roll – Rotation
  • Q/E: Yaw – Rotation

This was my first attempt at doing a timelapse.
Check out the timelapse here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni41LU82xps

Here are some screenies:

Successful landing

Moonscape

I Dare to Ludum!

After skipping the last two because of my graduation, I’m back to participating. Can’t wait to lose sleep and get stressed!

This time I’m giving Unity2D for a spin, and I’m really exited to see what the theme will be.

Tools:

  • Unity2D with C#
  • Visual Studio 2013
  • Inkscape / Gimp (art)
  • Ableton Live / Reaper (music)

I’ll see you guys on IRC!

I’m out,

Descalon.

Participating

I’m bored right now. How about I make my participating post? 😛 For the competition, of course.

Language, Compiler, IDE: C++, MinGW 4.8, Code::Blocks 12.11
Libraries + Extra code: SFML (something between 2.1 and current master), my game base thing and utility library.
“Graphics”: Photoshop Elements 9
Sound: Bfxr
Music: Abundant Music
Emotional Support: MY KITTY (large)

Last time I made Trapped, and someone teased me because they felt it was a copy of One Chance (did anyone ever beat that other than me? :P). So I’m considering making a platformer this time around if could get something matching the theme… Which means I should probably figure out how to get working physics for one. This might be a long week.

I’m also considering Feather Kit so that I can compile to web, although I’ve never tried it before so I probably wouldn’t get as much done before the deadline.

So, next weekend, eh?

Oh look I’m on vacation and will be able to put the Amiga coding away for a bit – this will allow me to do both, on a schedule.

Yes. This works.

Lua / Lo:ve / swankypaint perhaps.

Editor will be combination of Sublime Text and, if it compiles and runs properly under Arch64, zerobrane studio.  (For live adaptation of the stuff.)

I’ll probably grab gfx from one of the open game gfx sources so I do not need to worry about that, as I _do_ need to get something coded.

  •  No, I won’t do that, because it’s against the rules.  Thanks to quill18 for the rule clarification post, which had a question from 7soul asking about open game assets, and a corresponding “no.”
  •  Luckily I’d already asked if Swankypaint was ready for this, and apparently, it is.  Which is good, tho I do need to grab it/build it … Friday in the prep time.

LD #30 I’m in and I’m jamming!

Yo! It’s time for another LD and this time I’ll be jamming! I’ll try to stick to the 48 hour limit.

Engine: Unity3D
Library: Visual Novel/CYOA engine I started working a week ago, this is a good place to give it a test!
Graphics: I don’t know how to art, probably Paint doodles
Music: Super likely going to ping @TomboFry for a couple of his songs! http://music.tombofry.co.uk/
SFX: freesound.org and maybe bfxr

Obligatory goat pic!

I’m in!

This will be my 2nd Ludum Dare. I had so much fun last time I have been so impatient for August to roll around.

I think I am going to give html5/js another go this time around, here is what I am planning on using:

Framework: I think I am going to give Phaser a try

Editor: Visual Studio 2013

Graphics: Gimp, Paint.net

Audio: sfxr/audacity

I can’t wait to get started. Good luck to everyone!

My “My First Ludum Dare” Tips

LD 30! I’m in for the 5th fun-filled time! As preparation (and for nostalgia sake) I went back through my past entries and looked at what I was happy/unhappy with: and I remembered the excitement and terror of my first ever Ludum Dare.

pac

I decided to write up a few (like, three) tips for people who find themselves this week in that same position… good luck!

I’m in again!

Using

Programming: Java with LWJGL, Paulscode’s SoundSystem, and my own open source libraries (for public use, as per rules)

Graphics: GIMP, Photoshop, and Graphics Gale for animation.

Audio: FL Studio and Audacity

Your engine looks really cool! I’m going to take a look and mess around with it a bit!

I’m In!

I’m going to be doing Ludum Dare for the first time. I will be doing the jam.

I will be using:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Graphics: Paint.NET and GIMP

SFX: sfxr

Music: www.fakemusicgenerator.com or incompetech.com
