LD30 August 22–25, 2014

Participation Award

Not a lot of time this weekend, but I’ll give it a shot.

Sitting in a room full of Ludum Dare peeps at the LD30 gathering at Improving Enterprises in DFW.

First time I’ve done a jam in a room with other peeps.

Pretty cool.

Let’s start!

Hi all!

The theme is very nice. I’ll be using Flash. Let’s try to make something interesting!

Good luck everyone! (and sorry for my English, just in case)

I’m in!

This will be my third Ludum Dare, although like last time I only have about half the allotted time due to Real Life commitments.

  • Programming Language: C#
  • Game Engine: Unity
  • Graphics: Blender, Photoshop
  • Audio:  . . .

My previous entries were Shabby Buffet and Infector Detector. And now, time to go create a mangled mess for Connected Worlds!

Progress shots will be posted on Twitter: @Devtactics

Connected Worlds

Well, a lot of ideas came to mind. Zelda dark world ideas of course, but then I thought of stargate SG-1, and my choice became clear.  Might be a bit too ambitious, but I think I can pull something off with very simple graphics.

Basic Idea is this: A meteorite crashes into your planet. You investigate to find that it was really some sort of portal. You bravely step through it and find yourself on an alien world.

Modeled and UV mapped a simplistic human model that I can throw on some quick textures to have different looking humanoids.

model

LD30 Spocker2 Entry 1

Game idea is completed. For anyone interested you can see my Trell board here:

https://trello.com/b/1uuyrS66/ld30

Basically the game involves the player travelling to different planets gathering resources and taking them to other planets that need those resources. You have limited fuel, and limited space. I think it is line with the theme? Maybe?

Anyway, it will have a very simple one touch control system.

Here is my basic plan

  • rough art
  • ship game control
  • planet resource allocation
  • rough ui (home/about/hiscore)
  • player cargo control
  • player fuel control
  • first cut sound/music
  • setup hiscore
  • random planet effects
  • random player obstructions
  • win scenarios

If I have time

  • cleanup artwork
  • cleanup ui
  • cleanup sound/music

Hourly progress

Posting hourly code, design, and game screenshots here:

Coffee dripping, still a bit groggy

So, I just woke up, immediately checked the theme. Connected worlds. This was one of the themes I wished for, but I don’t have any clear idea yet. However, there’s some vague things already coming to my mind.

Anyhoo, the coffee’s dripping and by the sound of it – or rather, the lack of sound – it’s done, so maybe it’s time to grab the first of many, many cups and start looking more closely for the theme!

Oh, and good luck to you all! May there be thousands of awesome games after this weekend!

Haxin in!

Hello everyone,

This Ludum dare I wanted to challenge myslef so hard that almost everything I am doing here is for the first time!
-This is my first solo (I always used to Jam 😛 )

-This is my first time doing Pixel Art for my games (A little scared)

-This is my first time with Haxe progamming language and HaxeFlixel framework! (I know that is suicidal!)

-This is my first time doing 8-bit music(I may not even try because of the time)

I may not even finish a game or finish the crappiest game here but I will try to do the second choice because my goal here is to learn!

Happy game making everyone!

Space HVAC

So, check it:

You’re the Space-HVAC guy, eager to fly through space and heat other planets up, by dragging them closer to the sun. Because it’s cold out there.

So you’re orbiting a sun, and you fire a harpoon, and it hits a planet, and the inhabitants of that planet cheer, and you bust out your winch and pull that planet closer.

There’s more, but we’re still hammering out details.

– Bill?

BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Where did it come from?

What does it do?

WHAT DO THEY WANT FROM ME?!

capsule

i forgot it was that time of year, but in 100%

Don’t have to work doubles like I did last year, let’s see what i can pull off.ing

Limited time this weekend but I’m eager to put something together for the first time!

We’re doing this.

Hi there!

We’ve been at it since the theme came out, but I wanted to have at least some concept art I could show before I posted anything.

We have a pretty decent idea, we’re doing more of a story-driven game with a few puzzle elements, an attempt to make the most out of the group’s natural talents.

The group is composed of 6 people as of right now, 5 amazing artists and a kinda-decent programmer(me).

I’m trying to run this show on Unreal Engine 4, but since it’s my first time developing a full game on it, it’s pretty much a gambit on my part. My team trusts me, though , which makes me confident I can pull this off.

So here’s that little concept I talked about, hope you guys like it!

10603295_10203618435052981_340421804978565650_n

Isn’t it my tradition to make this post every comp?

I’m out.

I picked an idea I know I can do,  and I’m considering adopting this as a full time project, but developing a compo version from where I am right now to the end of the competition, it just doesn’t sound like a fun workload to me. I could continue and probably have a game by the end off all this, but I’d be miserable in doing so.

Noo don’t do it!! Don’t give up!!

Yeah, don’t give up! Make a compo version! You can do it, and it will be great and at a finished state – and you’ll have finally broken this quitting streak!

Don’t give up! You can do it!!

Switching to UE4

I changed my mind after seeing the theme. I will use UE4.

Too bad that web support is not perfect yet. But hopefully people will still try it even if it’s not compiled for the web

I will use free assets from http://kenney.itch.io/kenney-donation, and going for the JAM

I use Unreal 3 at work, but haven’t had much time to practice with Unreal 4, so good luck to me!

Ah nice. Would love to try UE4 sometime. Im not big into 3d, so i havent really found myself needing it.

All ready to go, time to sleep

After the theme announcement, I came downstairs and started to get my environment setup.  It’s been a while since I’ve been able to particpate, but I’ve got this one.  I tried to setup streaming of my development, but couldn’t get it setup well, so I may take 10 minutes later to try and get it going, but it might be a lost effort.

I’m going to be using fission_engine again.  Even though that repo is slightly out of date (I tried to push earlier this week, but had issues with git subtree), I’ll get it pushed out live a little later.

Until then, I’m going to go to bed and think about a theme.  Later

Pause Button

Pause button.  On screen.  It works.

We’re off and running.

Best part – this gives me the idea I need for the entire game.

Working hard !

hi

Hi ! I know now what kind of game I’ll try to make.

I did some light improvements :D

Transitions

Basic movement in the real world, some basic movement in cyberspace, and a cool transition between the two. Hoping to get as much of the gameplay figured out today, so I can start designing the levels (which is non-trivial, thanks to me picking a 3d game).

Game Design Document

Game Design Document

The story revolves around an as yet to be named male protagonist.  He is from a world of drug and alcohol abuse, in other words, the dude’s a stoner.  The as yet to be named girl he loves is the complete opposite.  Very motivated and does not approve of her suitors life style.  The protagonist has to try and catch her before she is out of his life for good, something her truly does not want.  Along the way, to win her heart, he will be challenged.  Does he revert to his old ways to catch her, or does he do things right?  I want to make the story implied more than specifically spelled out.

The mechanics of my as yet to be titled Ludum Dare 30 entry are your typical 2D platformer fare.  You have to run and jump your way through as many levels as I have time to create in order to reach the girl you love.  You will be presented with various puzzles along the way that you have to circumvent to successfully reach her.  There will be easy puzzles and complicated puzzles.  A way to “cheat” will be provided so that you can easily make it past some of the more challenging obstacles.  However, do cheaters ever win?

The game will feel like a college stoner movie.  The colors will be bright and saturated.  The sound effects should be humorous as well, with a healthy dosage of “Aw dang I died dude!”  Collectibles will be very stylized and humorous sounds will be made by the character when they are collected.

I’m going to use GameMaker to build the game as I see this as a 2D game and I don’t have a lot of experience working with the 2D features of Unity and there is not a lot of time to fumble around.  The mechanics should be simple enough that GameMaker is adequate.

Oh crap. Code declarations.

My bad. Totally forgot I had to provide code that I used before if I was going to use them for this competition.  :\

Anyway, I made a sort of entity/tilemap system and a tilemap editor to go with it. It’s not an actual library; just a couple classes. You can find them here:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/59779278/Ludum%20Dare/code.rar

It’s in Java and made for Java 2D, but I’m going to port it for LibGDX.

I hope I’m following the rules here.

Stellation – First update!

Hey all! In case you missed it what with the post-theme-announcement site crash, here’s my click-baity first post for this LD: 8 Reasons I’m Doing the Ludum Dare

So, yeah, MMO-ville. What’s that going to look like? Here’s a cell phone picture of my plan so far:

Dat handwriting.

Dat handwriting.

For those who can’t read my scrawl: The game is called Stellation, and it’s an instanced MMO where players (as balls of light) work together to illuminate areas of darkness and form shapes. As puzzles are solved and the walls in the game break down, players are joined from their separate instances to form larger worlds.

Tonight, I’m going to finish planning in Trello and work on getting a basic one-room server running in AWS to see if this is at all possible (really should have done warm-up weekend). If everything goes as swimmingly as I plan for it to, I will actually get enough sleep tonight to make something lovely and testable tomorrow. Again, best of luck to all participants, happy LD!

Nobody is here to steal ideas from the others. If you will be THAT secretive and protective about it I suggest you dont post anything about the game until it’s done and presented. This way no one will have the chance to steal your ideas, unless of course they’re Psychic or something like that.

First Night Progress

I have had a very fun night working on this idea! After refreshing my PhotoShop skills, I was able to make some isometric tiles and build an isometric rendering engine.

I then worked on a system for both generating and connecting these worlds.

Challenger approaching

Going to try my first dare without my usual team this time! Going to see how much I can do with unity this weekend, good luck everyone!

First Ludum Dare wooh exciting!

So this is an exciting journey to start with. Phew so many nerves about the theme. What if i did not like it? Well I do like the theme of CONEected worlds. There are some tools I will be using available to everybody of course:

plot: Two worlds collide (obviously) one of the light human regular earth species and another of the weird species of WHAT traffic cones? ewww weird those are strange.

Also livestreaming at http://www.twitch.tv/fauge7

Sprite maker: Paint.net

Ide: Eclipse

Game Engine: Libgdx

Language: Java

Doing XML parsing…

I want to use Tiled, but none of the parsers I’ve seen suits for my problem. I guess I’ll have to do it myself.

What problem? .tmx hust a simple xml. What language/platform do you use and what tools for xml parsing?

I’m in + desk photo + tools

Connected worlds!!! So I’m in.

This is going to be my 13th game for Ludum dare (8 for the main contest and 4 for mini-LDs). You can check my previous one here.

My desk this time… with the baby monitor over the main desk.

deskphoto

I would probably make some kind of platformer using:

Coding:

  • Language: AS3
  • Library: Starling + StarlingPunk
  • IDE: Flash Builder

Graphics:

  • Paint.net

Music and sounds:

  • SFXR
  • Chordpulse
  • GXSCC

Good luck to all!!

i’m feeling good with this one!

so i have done 2 or 3 other ludum dare, but i wasn’t happy with any of them.
some of them i didn’t even post.

but know working on it for a hour and a half.
i’m really feeling this theme and this game

this is what i have

enjoy your coding, but i’m taking a break

I love space…

Tuning into an idea at the moment. It involves old school telephones, a space man and 9 planets :)

I think this is the one 😀

Theme Thoughts

Here are some ideas I am playing around with. I have no clue where to go with this, but maybe these thoughts can help someone else out.

1. Most obvious is parallel dimensions or space travel between planets

2. In a modern sense, it is talking about something like the internet connecting the world

3. In business it also refers to people and organizations being connected – via something like the internet

4. I’m also thinking about connecting so called “different worlds” together, for example genders or nations

5. Something abstract like connecting the world of books with the world of acrobatics (just an example)

We’re In, Fashionably Late

Hi everyone

I’m pleased to announce that we’re in again for this LD, a bit later than usual. We will have less time for this one, as I am currently on a mountain  in Scotland, so won’t be able to start on the gameplay until this evening after a 6 hour drive home.

Here is where I currently am:

image

Tools will be pretty much the same as last time:

  • Construct 2
  • Gimp / Paint.net
  • GarageBand / Cakewalk / Korg

No cats this time as they are staying with a friend, although I might sneak in a few archive photos. Good luck everyone!

2 hours, 18 minutes in…

And here’s what I have so far! Really not sure where I’m going with this, but oh well ^_^

Screen1

Screen2

Screen3

Real basic stuff. Some pixel-y art stuff, real bland color tone, a few pushable blocks and a couple of buttons/gates.

So how are your games coming along? :)

Finished my first game loop for LD30!

It’s a chill loop, good for puzzle games and the like. Going to work on something more upbeat now. Feel free to download and use (with attribution, of course) in your 72-hour jam! More tracks on the way; my goal is 8.

hi everyone its my second LD

The theme fit perfectly with a concept i have in mind since long time

The goal is to make an equilibre between  nature area called Biotope so the game will be call “BIOTOPE”

Software :

Construct 2

Gimp

Sfxr

Lets go

I’m In!

This is my 3rd Ludum Dare – this time I’m doing the Jam.  Here’s what I’m using:

IDE: JetBrains’ IntelliJ

Language: Java

Frameworks: libGDX and Java SE 8

Art: Adobe Creative Suite

Music/SFX: sfxr, Audacity, Logic

Good luck to everyone!

OP

Space Patrol Update

So I kind of know what I’m doing for this game.

There is a space transport rail connecting two worlds. One of the worlds is on the verge of collapse and the other healthy world is trying  to send one extremely important care package through the rail. You are given the task of defending the “cart” against space looters, as this is the most important package ever sent.

I will try to update every once in a while.

I will be updating GitHub hopefully about once every hour.

https://github.com/ejoe23/Ludum-Dare-30

Generic Theme…

So we recive the Theme and we like it!

But it’s very generic…

After hours of brainstorming, we got that:

Exemplo de jogo

So, let’s made a game!

LD #30 “Connected Worlds”

This will be my second Ludum Dare. I’m not 100% sure what type of game I will be making, but I do know I’m a couple hours late. I just got off work, so I’m gonna eat a pizza while I think up some ideas and rework some old code that I’ll be using. The first Ludum Dare I participated in I just had the goal of making something from start to finish in the time period, this time my goal is to learn something as well, which in my case will be to learn/re-learn SDL and work with C++ again which I hadn’t done in 3 years, so now is a good opportunity for me to do so.

Code: C++, SDL 2.0 (converting some base code that’s SDL 1.2 to SDL 2.0)

Art: Paint.NET

Audio: Fruitiloops (we’ll see when I get there), Audacity

https://db.tt/mpPZxViy

Good luck everyone!

Some scripts I made to make things easier

Straight to the point, these are some scripts I wrote in C# for Unity 2D stuff that I’ll be using – feel free to use them any way you want.

TileTextureManager.cs

This script is ment to make creating platformer scenes a bit easier. Assign it to the tile you are using and then give it six sprites for said tile – it will detect nearby tiles and automatically select the appropriate sprite to use, then rotate as needed so that you can place tiles and leave it to the rest.

PlayerMovement.cs

Pretty self-explanatory, this is a simple script to act as a sort of 2D CharacterController for the player. Comes with a debugging option. Requires a trigger collider to detect whether or not the player is on the ground.

EnemyAI.cs

Also rather self-explanatory. Simple script that doubles as very basic A.I. and physics handler for enemies. Physics is nigh-identical to player physics. Also includes debugging option and also needs a trigger collider.

HealthLogic.cs

Decent health script I wrote for whatever needs it. EnemyLogic will need this to deal damage properly to the player properly. Includes logic for invulnerability periods after getting hit. Debugging on this will only display health in the console.

Finally did something!

Two hours pacing until I figured out what to do with this theme. Then I wrote a few lines of code. Now my body tells me it’s approximately sleep time!

First serious Ludum Dare

I began working on a game for Ludum Dare #28 … but didnt finish it… i was also just starting to learn Unity at that time, and ended up feeling like I had to learn to much to be able to complete it in 2 days ..

but now I know a whole lot..

I feel my idea is kinda cliched, but whatever, I picked an idea and Ill follow it through..

using: Unity, Blender, GIMP, .. hmm i guess im gonna have to find a someway to get soundfx/music..

.. lol just so people know this is the way im making 3d models, quick and easy tracing! :)

lol ..im guessing someone is gonna think “no way he made those 3d models in the timeframe”  .. well Iam.. im pretty good with blender.

2014-08-22 22_22_42-Blender

Grayscale and Idea!

After over an hour-and-a-half of thinking about the theme, trying to come up with an idea, I have found one.  It seems to be a fairly unique idea, not the best, but it will work.  I have decided to create a 2d software rendering engine, and decided on a grayscale game design, for simplicity (and I am terrible at art :))  Now that the image loading/rendering engine part is coded, I can get to work on the actual gameplay!  Good luck!

progress01

Little coloured squared with a texture slapped on them. Progress!

Eureka!

Hi there. Nice to be part of a LudumDare again. Hope all of you’re enjoying this weekend.

My idea is not finalized. Have to go to bed and lucid dreaming about it. Maybe there are possible better ideas for a 48h competition. But here is, what I have so far:

Name of the Game: WhatHappendToBetelgeuse.

Plot: Earth founded a colony at Betelgeuse hundred of years ago. Colonists were traveling via generation spaceship. Successfully they founded a colony. After years contact to Betelgeuse gets lost. What happend. After many years mankind was building a ship with a stardrive engine to be able to look after Betelgeuse and the lost colonists.

Mechanics: Star map is generated randomly. Your ship is starting at earth to reach Betelgeuse. But every turn ship will use power, food and integrity. If you will reach Betelgeuse, you have to visit asteroid fields, plantes and unknown entities on the m,ap to restock your resources and improve the skills of the crew. If there is no food, your crew will loose skill and die after some time. If your energy cells are empty your ship will not move and you’ll loose everything. If integrity is low your ship will use more energy per move and finally will be destroyed.

Thats it so far … here is a rapidly created concept image

Concept

Now I have to sleep. Hopefully I’ll be back at 10am MET for development and livestreaming. Bye and good night!

Tags: colony colonists, connected worlds, exploration, reconnect, roguelike, whathappendtobetelgeuse

Okay, going back to my previous toolset.

Damn, I just keep on coming up with new ideas, don’t I?

Yeah, yeah – Python, PyGame, GIMP, all that stuff.

i dont even know

yea i have no clue what i am doing at this point

Shabby Buffet…Online?

This is probably a terrible, terrible idea, but I’m going to recreate my LD28 entry (Shabby Buffet) as the new and improved Shabby Buffet Online. I’m going to do it from scratch (using Unity’s standard FPS controller again, I think). Won’t be borrowing any LD28 code or re-using any of the models or textures. Same gameplay, same goal, but hopefully this time it won’t be broken. And of course it will be changed to fit the Connected Worlds theme.

Time is already running out. Go go go!

I remember playing that, and watching a hilarious stream of that game. I’d love to see it improved upon.
23. Aug 2014 · 02:34 UTC
We’ll have to use a very loose definition of “improved”… Half an hour later and I’m already feeling apprehensive about this idea. :)

Well my idea seems to be coalescing

Something to do with two places connected with portals, where you have to maintain your temperature… one side is constantly increasing your temperature, the other side is constantly cooling you. You have to stay within the right temperature range in order to survive, but you also have to get to the end of the level.

This reminds me a lot of Metroid Prime 2.

I wonder how many people are making a game exactly like this.

Oh well, mine will be different!

Finally set up…

After a delay while we set up the sound system for a local event just after the theme announcement, we’re finally set up and ready to make a start on our entry! We have just about everything we’ll need in this room, and more! 2 computers, 4 monitors, sound system, a piano, a keyboard, and a whopping great organ! So, time to start! We’ll keep you posted! Best of luck everyone!

Looks amazing! Good luck!

Player its ready!

MyPlayerIsReady

I got my player working. Next I’ll put some brains inside the enemy so I can have a fight!

I am doing a first person dungeon crawler like King’s Field series (predecessor to Soul’s series) for the jam with some friends. I am trying to make world as connected as I can routewise. I adore From Software’s level design and I want to try to design similar level to their style for the game.

Khansept Decisions

Ok, then.

It’s only been 2 hours since I first saw the theme (yeah… I’m a bit late) and I have a tentative concept. I guess we’ll have to see how horrible of an idea it is over the course of the next 45 hours.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it’ll be too complex for me to implement in a weekend.

Basically, the game will be a platformer.

The premise – your world has been shattered. The very fabric of reality is torn into multiple worlds. You must travel to each of these fragments, connecting them once again into a united whole.

This fragmentation manifests itself in the form of gravity incongruities between world fragments. Each world displays different gravity behaviors.

Armed with grappling hook, you must visit each world, searching for a solid location to hook a connection line before grappling to the next world.

Admittedly this isn’t that original, but it does give me some room to play around with non-standard gravity based platformers. And grappling mechanics… which I find strangely attractive right now. Like I said, we’ll see how I feel in 45 hours.

I hope everyone else is making more rapid progress than I am.

Until the next post then!

And so it begins

Time to stop procrastinating and start making a game!

Just finished buying Pickle and setting up the git repo.

Connected Worlds… Not Planets

For the creative stage of my LD48 game, I researched the topic of Connected Worlds, but found myself picking up planets references. So I decided to break up the Connected Worldsconcept into two categories.

Connected Planets it’s the common concept one can think of. The planets represent a different space but same time / reality.

Connected Dimensions it’s the more dark subject. It represents a world in a different dimension / reality, and probably different space. If it’s the same space but different dimension, the topic becomes darker.

The word connected means that the worlds are connected by something.

I have picked up movie references for these two categories, that you can see in my blog post.

Worst theme

I ‘m really wanted to participate at this Ludum Dare. But theme… theme is sucks.

Снимок экрана 2014-08-23 в 12.57.41

Press space to take a shit by the theme.

Sure I will try to do something interesting, but I’m very disappointed.

Down, but not out

I’m going to try very hard to make something, and it might even be coherent.

I was at BJ’s(a somewhat local Discount Club) when my day took a turn for the exciting. I had a moderately severe audio-triggered seizure. Details follow. Some cursing. Sorry folks.

I was pushing the cart when something high pitched and warbly went off. And the whole world went quiet, like someone was cranking down the volume. I tried to get away, but it was like running through oobleck. The harder I pushed, the harder it was to move. And then I started to fall. I caught myself with the cart, but it wasn’t enough. I fell mid-stride, in slow motion.

And then I hear, plain as day, the sound of cloth tearing. My pants ripped from crotch to knee and I went all the way down into a stunning split. And as I’m toppling over, the only thing I can think are “My balls are dragging on the ground. That’s really cold.”

My SO barks some orders, and apparently I have just enough presence of mind to follow them, aand pull myself across the ground with my arms. I come to some time later(snow says it was like two minutes) with a poncho over me, and snow asking if I can stand. I can’t. I kinda lapse into the after shocks. So here’s this lady who thinks I’m having a normal seizure, which fair enough, and is trying to be helpful by telling me not to try to move.

Problem is, I’m not trying to move, I’m dry heaving and occasionally twitching. I understand now it looks the same from the outside. All I can think is “C’mere lady, I wanna puke on your shoes.” Not nice of me, not fair of me, but it’s what I was thinking.

Anyway, the manager comes over with a wheel chair, and wouldn’t you know it, the wheels won’t lock. I tell them to hold it steady as I try and pull myself up. I manage to sort of fall upward, but not far enough. I think “well, maybe I can use the foot bits as a seat…” That doesn’t work, and for a moment, I think I’m going to have to pay for it, but they spring back after I fall into a metal bar. Which, at least lets me steady myself. So, I finally manage to get onto one knee and grab the chair and sorta.. throw myself back.

So, I’m in a wheel chair, with my junk half hanging out, covered in a poncho, and they hand me a bottle of water. I’m wheeling myself, because is is not the first time I’ve been in a wheel chair. So there’s no place to put it but my lap.

Everything’s fine until the poncho gets caught in the wheel. It pulls just enough to drop the fucking water bottle right on my balls.I downed the water after that.

She gets me some new pants, we check out, and I have to go get changed. I’m in a wheel chair, and… Of course they don’t have an automatic door. I try to push through, I make no headway forward. So I turn around… And run into the water fountain. Then I make it into the door part way, only to get caught on the lip, and the accursed door spanks my ass back out of the bathroom.

I skid into a damn checkout line, and I look up at the cashier, eyes bulging, in a damn wheelchair, and ask “can you help me into the bathroom?”

I change my pants without further incident. as I’m starting to get my strength back. I get spanked out of the bathroom again, and skid into a bizarre victory lap. I get to the door, stand shakily, put the wheelchair back, and say to snow, as I’m standing in front of the guy who checks receipts “Snow, give me the receipt so he won’t repossess my pants.”He pretty much dies laughing.

So, I’m going to try to contribute, but I’m going to be a bit loopy for a while. On the bright side, gave me something to do for this theme. If I can concentrate enough to do it.

Edit: And I screwed the pooch on the cuts. Yay.

The idea

So after a couple hours of trying to come up with an idea, I think I found one I wouldn’t normally do.

The idea is to have two worlds connected through a mysterious device. This device was then fleshed out to be a Myst-like book. The book is found by the player in the basement of a church-like building in the real world. They are then teleported into a cartoonish world where they become trapped. They must then find the book and figure out how to use it to get back to the real world.

Other then that, I really have no clue.

Update – Open to Suggestions for a Name

Hey guys!

Thanks for those who are watching my stream! My game idea, is switching between dimensions, to solve puzzles. I need a name! Much appreciated!

Good progress, time for sleep!

So this being my first time working in Unity for a game jam, I’m floored by the amount of progress I’ve made in such little time. Unity is really a powerful tool.

I’m going to cash in on this spare time and sleep a bit longer than I would usually. Hopefully that will get all the gears turning.

Here’s the player’s ship orbiting a planet.

For an HTML5 version, see http://gfycat.com/SoupyUnpleasantCrocodileskink

I’m in (against all common sense)

So I’ve decided to participate and go nuts this weekend in the Ludum Dare; although the jam started a few hours ago, I just got home and decided to kick it in late.

The software I’ll be using

  • Unity
  • Audacity
  • Gimp
  • MS Office: A lot of Powerpoint and Excel for the game design.

So, yeah this is my first go, hopefully I’ll get something done.

Late, but trying

My first Ludum Dare, and I slept in. Even with that, my “life”‘s  gonna get in the way, so we’ll see how this goes. With that said

I’ll be using Game Maker Studio, it’s inbuilt graphic tool, maybe some GIMP 2 and Audacity for the sounds.

Making progress

I have some  of the basics working. my game will be a puzzle game of sorts. In order to solve puzzles, you will have to gather information from 2 different versions of the world. Mechanics are showing promise thus far (meaning I can make words show up in my debug.log!) and I’m getting kind of excited!

Pumped and ready

My first ludum dare; super excited. Kinda feel like a noob for using Unity (oh well, I am a noob :/ ).

Figured out what I’m making, fully designed. Should be done with the basic mechanics in a couple hours, then it’s on to the art!

First Time here.

So, first Ludum Dare.

Pretty interesting Theme, I was rooting for other but this one seems fun enough to do something worthy.
I’m seeing that theres a lot of participants going for the “Outer Space” setting, in my case I have no idea yet of how to interpret it into a videogame.

I’ll try to keep this updated with my progress. I hope we all get fun and level up from the experience!

See ya!

First solo LD, let’s see how this goes!

Using Unity 4, photoshop and a wacom tablet as needed. I have no plan, I have a rough idea for my game written out and a photo shoot that will take up most of my day tomorrow. Here we go!

My very first Ludum Dare

Hello everyone!

After receiving the theme I stared at my screen for quite some time, I really had no clue at what to make. I had hoped for a different theme, but hey I will try to make something great.

I am planning on making a space trade sim, taking the theme very literal, with a dynamic spaceship editor.

My tools of choice are:

– Unity in C#
– NGUI
– Cinema4D
– Photoshop
– Maybe FL studio if I got the time.

Good luck everyone and Have fun!

Space Mouse – Hook to your cheese!

Hello!

I’m Michelle, and I’m making a game for the Dare!

Using Blender Game Engine v2.66, I’m making a clawshot game. The goal will be for the player to reach a space cheese in a galaxy by hookshooting to small planets, but they have to be close enough (being connected to eachother by distance).

It’ll be a firstperson view game with between 5 and 10 levels.

I’ll be using the pre-built Blender Game Engine for the core engine, and I’ll be using a Python script I got from a since-unavailable open source. (see below). All other scripts and things will be designed by myself during the contest.

Random terrain in action

Got my random terrain working.  Next up, a player character.

Wow such space

Alot of space themed games this LD and i am loving it 😀

PS. I am making a space game aswell…

Midnight Update

“Core idea” is in place. Fly through heaven & hell (no idea if thats what I’m gonna call it, just the how I’m describing the setting & feel) dodging blocks. I got a notebook of TO-DO’s still left, but at least the mechanic is there!
Also, obligatory notebook+whiteboard photos. (Feel free to donate some money so I can buy a larger whiteboard, I’ll put you in my LD game)

My starting of Ludum Dare

Today I woke up two times.

First time it was night and I didn’t want to look what the theme is because of people in my room and I continue sleeping.

Second time it was something between day and night and I was thinking about turning computer on, and then I go to see what time it is, and it was 5:55.

I’m writing this post in 6:11 in my time zone, so you know the rest of the story.

Good luck to everyone!

Injury :3

My right arm has been aching for a couple of days. Now, as I’m writing code, it’s getting worse and worse. I’ve taken a couple of breaks already to ease it, but it doesn’t really help that much. :( So… Let’s hope I can finish the game. Would be a pity to stop now for something so meaningless as an arm.

Progress!

So, 3 hours in and progress is good!

spr_player

Lots of things planned out, so hopefully we can pack it all in!

Concept… Maybe?

We’re not really sure where we’re going yet, we’ve been asleep for 5 hours.

However, we do have this:

Connected Worlds! Trading! Inaccurate Geography!

Not sure what’s happening yet but there’s probably gonna be pirates! twitch.tv/literalgames for watching me draw boats

About generated floorplans

First of all, I’ve created  some rooms, “grown” from random seeds, and then places corridors and walls inbetween. It’s fine, but not realistic, lets call them cubicles.

Second attempt was to create warehouse. Those are big rooms, connected one to each other, no corridors, thick walls.

Third one is “office” floorplan, where many small rooms are located alongside walls, and there might also be some big room in the center. It would be more understandable, if you look at the picture:

topology

Those are currently generated autmatically, all parameters like size/roomcount/doorcount etc are set up in Unity editor. Here is how it looks ingame:

Humanoid Rigged

UV Mapped, rigged, and crudely animated model in game now with basic movement and camera following behavior.

Really one of the things I was worried was going to eat up all of my time.

First night creativity

As the artist of a 3 man team and a friends wedding to deal with tomorrow I must sign myself out for the evening but it is not without progress!  After a solid idea storm we settled into a fun design space and things are going well.  Expect to hear from our programmer at one point, whether the words are frustration or self praise I couldn’t tell ya.  Anyways, signing out night 1: enjoy some of my early concepting! (Ships and planets and misc!)

Connecting Planets

So I’ve taken the theme to mean connecting planets.  The idea is the player draws squares between two planets to connect them avoiding certain obstacles. And actually making sure the bridges connect the planets. Here’s a couple screenshots. Time for dinner.

Animated Version

Animated version of my previous screen, just learnt how to capture gifsCropperCapture[3]

It’s a Platformer!

Blocks! Jumping! Jumping blocks!

Blocks! Jumping! Jumping blocks!

So thanks to the code I posted, I was able to get done in 2 hours what would’ve probably taken me four. Got basic game mechanics in, most of the art is done and I prepared some SFX with BFXR to top it off.

Superb progress in comparison to the last time I participated, where I only barely managed to get an idea and set up an ultra-basic template for it. Can’t wait for tomorrow!

I think I’m going to leave the aliens as placeholder art

Off to a good start

I’m off to a good start.  I have a solid idea for gameplay, and a good foundation to make it work.  My biggest worry currently is the art workload, as the idea I chose needs a good amount of art and I’m far from an artist.   Cue pixel art.  For the sake of prosperity here are some early uninteresting screen shots.  There’s basic movement but not much else.

I believe I have decided on the name, which is:  Little Jimmy and the Great Imagination Machine.  Gameplay details will follow in future posts, and you know, hopefully a game too.

For now I’m going to catch some sleep and then hit the grindstone again in the morning, but first a little treat.

LD 30 – Connected Worlds

I’m most likely attempting to combine the LD 30 – Connected Worlds theme with our local ‘House of Games’ Jam this weekend in Seattle at Amazon…

The HOG Jam doesn’t start till tomorrow at 10am PST so not sure how this is all going to work out.

Weather we go for a team jam or I try the solo compo…
I’ll find out in the morning if anyone else want to try and combine the two…

Could end up with some sort of Iron Chef like game jam…
You have these 2 themes and 24hrs to make something out of it…

yeah…
we’ll see if I’m (or we’re) up to the task…

We’re in!

This time I teamed up Julia, and she already got a first draft of our character:

main character

Draft of our main character

As always I’m using Java and LibGDX, while Julia uses Spine for animations.
Let’s see what we can do in 72 hours!

We have a plan!

Hey all, we came up with a good game plan for this theme: Oregon Trail in space.  Who doesn’t like space? Who didn’t enjoy Oregon Trail?  No one, that’s who.  We’re chiseling away at this wonderful sculpture of a game and making good progress.

And now, what we’ve done: We found 8ft tall Waldo and cut our dinner like a sheet of paper.20140822_205806

That is all.
