LD30 August 22–25, 2014

In and using Processing

I’m going to use Processing again this time – hopefully with exe, web and Android versions of my game. I’ll probably use bfxr and Caustic for audio.

Good luck everyone. I’m really looking forward to playing and voting on the games afterwards.

Once more, into the fray!

Around this time one year ago, I participated for the first time in the 48-hour competition. I remember my first entry being a complete mess code-wise; cutting corners and doing sloppy ineffective stuff just because at least it worked, far too stressed just figuring out how to get even my simple Track & Field-esque game running within the deadline. Let me take a few seconds to reflect on how I’ve probably gotten a wee bit wiser one year down the line…

So okay time’s up let’s do this introductory-thing-dealie

My toolbox:

  • Code: Java, with LibGDX
  • Sounds: Bfxr
  • Music: Anvil Studio and/or GarageBand
  • Graphics: Pixen

For the first time I’m also using a code base, which can be found in this general area.

My goals for earlier entries have been: Make cleaner code more efficiently, manage time so that I can fit a normal sleep schedule, and place better in at least one category than previous tries. So far I’ve hit all of the points with each new try, but since I placed really well last LD we’ll have to see how that last one goes. :)

Good luck to one and all, and see you again once all’s said and done!

My first time as well!

It’s Wednesday and I’m already very excited to see what I can come up with this weekend for LD30. This will be my very first LD too, and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve been involved in game development in one shape or form for almost 5 years so I know that this will definitely help me with my development as a game developer. I can’t wait to get started! I will also be recording a timelapse.

Platform: Web/HTML5

Engine: Phaser/Box2DWeb

Editor: Eclipse with Web development tools

Graphics: Inkscape

Audio: Audacity, probably

Edit: I changed my mind about the engine I will be using. Instead of Impact I think will be going with Phaser.

Second Edit: Added development environment I will be using and changed the graphics editor.

Finally!!

Finally i am able to participate in my first ludum dare, this would have been my second ld but CCNA came in the way last time :( Tools i will be using:

  • Engine: Unity
  • language: C#
  • IDE: Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate (thanks school)
  • Grahpics: GIMP
  • Audio: BFXR, maby FL studio 11.
  • Listening music: di.fm/chiptunes or /ambient

I am going with Unity so i can focus more on the actual gameplay itself instead of making my own engine from scratch, but i am working on a simple C++ engine, maby next time? //.oni

New Plan For Ludum Dare

So maybe some of you saw I posted and I said I might make a game in the Compo, but now that me and my friend are doing it together, I will be doing the 72 Hour Game Jam.

Engine: Unity3D

Language: C#

Modeling: Blender

Texturing: Photoshop & Gimp

Communication: Skype & Twitter

Other Physical Devices:

  • Wacom Bamboo Tablet
  • “Aspire One” acer Laptop

Partner’s Twitter: @SwedishCheese
My Twitter: @TD_SMAX

I’m in.

I’m in for my very first Lundum Dare. I’ll be using my pen and my note cards, Twine, and whatever content generators I find as I realize I require them. I am quite excited for this.

Using a pen and cards sounds like a fun way of making a twine game!

All Ready

I’m prepared for this LD! I managed to make a library to use to make setting up the screen, rendering, framebuffers and sounds much easier for me! I made a little demo to demonstrate what it can do. Here is a link to a video of it in action and here is a download link so you can run it.

***EPILEPSY WARNING***

Minor tools update.

I’ve written a (very) small Haxe/OpenFL boilerplate I’ll be working from.

Downloadable here.

Props to ChevyRay/FlashPunk for having such a great architecture that I can hardly think any other way.

My First Ludum Dare!

Hey everyone! This is my first ever Ludum Dare, and I am VERY excited. I plan to participate in this weekends, and the October Challenge. Please +1 me!!!

I’m in.

I started learning C# and Unity about 2 months ago and have decided to take part in the jam, to push myself and force myself to learn a little more. I have no idea how well I’ll do, or if I’ll even finish, but isn’t that part of the joy of Ludum Dare?

Good luck to all!

Ok, I’m prepared!

Warning before you read: My main language is Spanish, so I will have some typos and other language mistakes.

So I was in a Webapp project when I saw Notch complaining about his internet because he wanted to stream LudumDare this weekend. Yeah, thats the whole history, with that tweet remembered about Ludum Dare and then I realice how much I wanted to participate so here I am! It’s my first Ludum Dare, also I haven’t touch any game development topic in the last 6 months so… Yeah, it’s gonna be AWESOME! Here is the list of my tools:

Language: C++

Engine: SFML

Paint Tools: Gimp, Paint .net, Paint and Graphics Gale.

Effects Tool: SFXR

Music Tool: The webpage wich generate random music with CC0 — “No Rights Reserved”

Also I will try to use Chronolapse and upload a video to Youtube once I finish.

I will be listening music on Spotify. Drinking Diet Coke and Monster. I don’t know If I will be able to make 48 hours without sleep so maybe I sleep like 6 hours because it’s important to be awake. And… that’s all, the game will be released for Windows at first, and then I will make it avaliable for Linux.

Remember It’s a competition to take our skills to the next level while making some fun and knowing you are not alone :) I mean… I am, because I am in the not Jam edition, but, you know that there are a lot of people around the world doing the same. Enjoy it!

Sleep: Don’t go without sleep. Your game and skills will suffer. Take reasonable breaks and get some sleep, eat some fruit along with the caffeine.

Ludum Dare #3

So, this’ll be my third Ludum Dare. I recently took a look at the last two games I made, and realized that they were lacking a lot of the polish that the higher ranking games had. For this LD, I’m going to focus specifically on polish (at least 6 hours). That will of course mean the game will have to be much simpler, but I’m OK with that.

Stuff I’ll be using:

  • Love2D (http://love2d.org/)
  • Pixen (http://pixenapp.com/)
  • Gimp (http://gimp.org/
  • Trophy, my Lua physics engine that I wrote in preparation for the compo (https://github.com/charles-l/trophy)
  • Milkytracker (http://milkytracker.org/)
  • Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

Best of luck to you all :)

Hey fancy seeing you here

Count us in

Set sail for adventure, folks—the USS Grunge Band 2014 has plotted a course for the distant shores of LD30. It’s bound to be a treacherous maiden voyage, one fraught with icebergs and repeated mutinies, scurvy and sea monsters. Neither crew member has much of a sea leg to stand on. But this opportunity comes only thrice a year; the will to explore does not wait. Plus, the weekend was going to waste otherwise.

For those interested, the Grunge Band 2014 is equipped with the following:

  • Engine: FlashPunk
  • Language: ActionScript 3
  • Graphics: Aseprite
  • Audio: Audacity, Bfxr

Good luck, everybody.

Another person in

So this will be my 7th (8th?) Ludum Dare.

I have successfully completed a game 4 times starting back in LD 21. On a few occasions I have started and not completed for a variety of reasons including lack of motivation caused by buggy tools, illness and (on one very special weekend) alcohol poisoning.

The one bit of advice I would give to new people is to make sure you get the basics of error handling and testing done. It’s not as fun as coding new features but if your game is a crashy, buggy mess no one will like it.

Yep

glhf gogogogogogog to you too sir.

I’m in.

How’s it going? Hope you’re having fun preparing for the Ludum Dare. I sure am.

Graphics: Inkscape, export to PNG

Platform: The browser, Javascript & HTML5, Phaser.IO library. I wish I have time* to figure out a proper skeletal system for animation.

Music: FL Studio or Reaper. I can’t decide on the two.

Audio: If I have time*, some nodal system with self designed synthesis, and my trusty microphone.

*I will not.

I’m in!

This is my very first Ludum Dare! I’ll be joining in the Jam, and hopefully I’ll be able to complete something.

My tools:

  • Unreal Engine 4.4 (Blueprint/C++)
  • Visual Studio 2013
  • Gimp/Paint
  • Audacity
  • Sfxr

I’m In – with some new tools

I would like to say: “I’m In”

I have used primarily XNA for Ludum Dare,  since it’s no longer supported I decided to look into Unity 2D. I have messed around with it a bit since the last Dare I participated in, LD28 I think? Anyways, I see the power in Unity and want to learn more, I just haven’t had much motivation to make an entire game from start to finish. That’s why I decided to use Unity 2D for this Ludum Dare.

My tools will be:

Tools: Unity with Visual Studio 2013

Art: Either Gimp or Inkscape depends on how I feel this weekend

Sound/Music: Audacity, SFXR, and since I suck at writing music I will probably find some music generator for that.

My goal is to finish my game within the first 24 hours, then spend the rest of the time making it look nice, sound nice, and bug free.(Since I have been horrible at this in my previous entries) I’m hoping Unity will save some time so this will be easier.

Good Luck Everyone!

I would like to know how you find unity 2d coming from xna, I am considering the switch over myself :)

I’m In.

After these posts have turned out to be lies the past couple of times, I’m not quite sure what the point of writing another long enthusiastic post could be. Just trust that I’m going to be trying again. Possibly with a team this time. We should probably have it figured out at this point, but we don’t.

More details to come. Thanks for your patience.

Good luck and never give up! Everyone struggles a lot of the time.

Publishing my code

Hey everyone,

Since last time I programmed everything from zero using java, this time I will use some basic code of my own to put more time on the gameplay and graphics.

To be fair with the rules I publish my code here:

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/c9c8aeca49cd236ae76c305a37c34a8d

It’s nothing fancy or complete but I did my best to comment it and Javadoc it in case someone want to use it.

I may continue improving it so I will publish the final version before ludum dare starts.
