LD30 August 22–25, 2014

Here I go again

I’m in for the 4th time!

I have used different libraries and programming languages each time I have entered, and this will be no exception. This time I will make a browser based game using:

  • Coffeescript
  • GIMP
  • Reason
  • Tiled
  • maybe some rendering lib like pixi.js

and perhaps something more…

Good luck to everyone!

Yet Another “Yet another ‘I’m in’ post” Post

So, yeah — I’m in.

This is going to be my first Ludum Dare (yippi!), but I have participated in five GMC Jams (a 72-hour jam exclusively for GameMaker games) before. Actually, the reason I decided to do my first LD this weekend, is that I missed the last GMC Jam. (I was in the UK on vacation)

Sooo…. I’ll probably do the compo (48-hours), because I won’t have much time on Monday, anyway (school) and if my game’s not even close to “done” or “playable”, I’ll get an extra day! (you can do like that, right? )

If you’ve read this post carefully, you’ll probably have guessed I’m gonna use GameMaker. More precisely, GameMaker: Studio. I’ll only compile for Windows — the only other export I can use is for Mac, but you need a Mac computer to complete the build process, which I don’t have.

Other tools I’m likely to use are:

  • Aseprite (for not-so-very-good pixel art)
  • CGmusic (procedurally generated music)
  • BFXR (blip and blops)
  • Some particles designer for GameMaker (I want to use more particles than usually this jam, because I’ve rarely used them in games before)

I have no idea what libraries or scripts I’ll use. Probably, I won’t use any at all.

First Time! Q: Free, Public Domain Audio Samples?

Hi there.

I’m new to LD.  #30 will be my first LD, first game jam, and first video game competition ever!  Just started officially making games back in April 2014.

I’d like a little help understanding the content creation rules:  can I use free, public domain audio samples?

  • “All game code and content must be created within the 48 hours.”  — Got it!  Every audio/visual element is cooked up fresh!  I always fit my audio to the game.
  • “Photos and recordings you make of people or things are acceptable content, just you must acquire them during the competition.”  — No problem.  I don’t think this one will apply to me, but I can use a mic for sounds and a camera for photos or videos if I for some reason needed something like that.
  • “Fonts, drum loops, drum samples, and sampled instruments are allowed IF you have the legal right to use them.” — This one sounds like it should answer my question, but seems to speak to text and music without being pointedly inclusive of sound effects.  Typically, my sounds are based on pre-existing samples of either instruments or real world noises that I then process until it’s more exactly what I’m wanting for the game.

My hope is that I can use freely available, public domain audio samples and that customizing those sounds further will only make the practice even more acceptable.  But I’d really love to know before I begin that I’m working within the scope of the rules.

Looking forward to joining everyone this weekend!

I take the last one to mean that if you are using an audio program and it comes with music-oriented samples, or you can get music samples royalty free which are intended to be used in that program (or for music creation in general), that you are allowed to use them…WITHIN that program. Using audio samples that are not any of the 3 types listed would be outside the rules.

You’re not allowed to use already existing sfx… that’s why every game has sounds from SFXR! But I personally think if you are taking some other sound, processing the crap out of it to match your game then it’s ok… but if you’re just adding a little reverb then I think it feels “wrong”.

Thanks for the feedback @nintendoeats & @mrspeaker! Both of you make sense to me. After posting this, someone else shared a link with me to some other comments I hadn’t yet come across (I struggle to find things on this website sometimes) and I think I better understand now.

I’m in.

This blog post is just me declaring my codebase.
I’m going to be using this library I made.

First time in for the Jam!

With my friend Jan, we will be participating in Ludum Dare for the first time. I am responsible of the graphics and he is programming. We are planning to work from 9 AM to 5 PM for three days starting from Saturday morning. You will be able to watch our development process live at my Twitch channel here. Theme is not chosen yet but these are what we decided on:

Unity 3D as the game engine

C# as the programming language

Hand drawn vector art and animations for the graphics

Mobile or PC as the platform (if mobile also a Web version)

We are developing games for almost a year together and hoping to produce something awesome for this Ludum Dare.

Good luck everyone!

Well here we are again…

I took a break and didn’t participate in the past few compos but this one is the one! This time I’m going to make a thing! And play more games, because I didn’t do enough of that last couple of times.

I’ll be using LÖVE, along with standard programs like GIMP, etc.

Here’s hoping I’m more successful this time around!

C# Unity Developer looking for team

Currently i’m looking for kick-ass team member(s).
To introduce myself. I’m Roy 24 years old. currently studying Game Technology and Producing at Saxion University of Applied Science (3rd year). My portfolio can be found here www.therrato.com

For this Ludum Dare I would love to work with some new people. Are you able to keep your polygons on a low count and texture your models by your self, then you might be the person I’m looking for. Do you compose your own audio and sounds than I might be looking for you as well.
For 2D, can you work in more than one style so we can go for something fitting to the theme than I might be looking for you as well.

I don’t have a specific idea of what to create yet since the theme is still unknown but I am able to make a mobile version or a Kinect game. So if you guys or girls are up for that, then let me know.
If you are interested hit me up with your portfolio on here or on skype.
Tools at my disposal:
Kinect (v1)
xbox 360 Controller
3 android devices
1 iphone (3gs)
Unity 3D with Microsoft visual Studio.

I’m in and I will use Impact (HTML5 / JavaScript) again!

Soooooo…

The day before LD would be a bad time to try out the Unity 4.6 beta right?

Also here’s a photo of my battlestation:

Built it myself, with my bare hands.

Can’t wait LD30, and good luck to all.

I’m in!

Hi! My name is Josh Alcorn (@ewitsjosh) and I’m in, or at least I’ll try to be in. I work 2 8 hour shifts over the weekend so my game won’t really be a #LD48 game, more like a #LD32 game, if that’s a thing. I’ll be using Unity 4.5.3f3 along with Photoshop for art, bfxr for sounds, and Reason 6.something for music! Wish me luck!

Amateur Labs is in!

Our two-man team is ready for the Jam!

  • Language: C#
  • Engine: Unity3D
  • IDE: Visual Studio 2013
  • Graphics: GIMP, Wings 3D
  • Music: energyXT, cgMusic
  • SFX: Leshy SFMaker

I’m In

I’m going to *try* to compete

Unfortunately, this LD is the same weekend as a race I’m doing on Saturday, as well as a day of volunteering I’ll be doing for most of the day sunday. This means I’m losing about…. 5 hours on Saturday and another 9 hours on Sunday. I was never very fast in previous LD events either, so losing that time is pretty devastating 😛

But that’s not going to stop me from staying up Friday to participate in some of the excitement, as well as at least getting something down on paper to maybe make later. I’m also planning on streaming when I am at my desk and actually working. I tried it last time and my friends seemed to enjoy peeking in on me throughout the weekend, so I figured I would keep it going.

Anyway, with all of that out of the way, let me get to my tools. Oh, I forgot to mention. I’m going to try for the compo but with losing so much time, I may try to finish on Monday. But of course, I’m seeing friends on Monday since it’s my last week at home before I leave for university 😛 What a perfectly busy weekend. Okay, tools:

Language: Java, mostly likely. Over the past month I’ve been learning SFML with C++, but I don’t think I’m quite ready to get started using that, especially with my additional time constraints.
IDE: Eclipse because who doesn’t love Eclipse?
Graphics: Photoshop, probably.
Audio: Bfxr since I’ve never been very good with sound or music. If I can find the time, I’ll try doing random things at the end, but who knows. For the most part, nobody should expect any sound in my game 😛
Platform: Mac
Stream: http://www.twitch.tv/josephroquedev

Well, that’s it! Good luck to everybody this weekend, I’ll see you all again tomorrow night!

I’m in.

Okay. Name’s Morgan Brown. 13-years-old. Second Ludum Dare. Let’s do it.

Engine: Unity3D (for the sake of being generic :P)
Language: Javascript
Graphics: Paint.NET / Blender
Sound: SFXR

And… That should be it.

Hi Morgan I am 11 (I will be 12 in 2 months) and I am also doing Ludum Dare with me and my new friend. We are making our game in Unity3D (but with C#, but we could do JS instead) anyways I was wondering if you wanted to do the jam with us. It’ll be really fun and we only need 1 more person so you would be perfect. Skype message me to answer, my username is “digifigure”. Thanks 😀

I’m in!

Hey all!

Just a quick note to say that I’m planning to have a go at LD #30 over the weekend. This will be my second LD after participating in #28.

I will be primarily using GameMaker: Studio Pro with a (hopefully working) HTML5 export. The usual team of content generators and GIMP will be used for visuals and sound, but I may try my hand at using some vector graphics (swfmill), which would be new for me. I may borrow from my own code libraries (simple collision scripts and such) but all code will be my own.

I’m quite rusty and I don’t know if I’ll be able to use all of the 48 hours like last time, so it should be interesting! Good luck all!

IN!

Just a quick note: with my immense joy, I will be partecipating in LD30!

This is my 5th consecutive ludum dare and I’m starting to really enjoy it. Hopefully I’ll be able to learn a lot like I usually do and have heaps of fun!

Some quick list of the tools I’ll be using:

  • Language/Framework: JS/HTML5, for prototyping goodness and instat portability
  • Graphics: the insuperable Inkscape for vector and Paint.NET for raster
  • Sound and music: bxfr for sfx, REAPER or milkytracker for music (IF I’ve got the time for it)
  • IDE: emacs because it’s just awesome
  • Drink of choice: water because being sleepy makes me creative
  • Hours of sleep: not as much as my body needs, not as little as the game requires

Sooo, yeah. Here we are. Good luck to everyone, and have fun!

Inkscape is impossible to overcome? I didn’t think it was *that* bad. :)

I’m going to be using some base code

I’m going to be using base code for the Compo so I’m sharing it.

It’s not much but it saves me like an hour or so.

or

It uses Java and libGDX.
