You need to print it and put that baby up at the bistro!

I want to know where that creepy staircase in the back leads to…
16. Apr 2011 · 22:22 UTC
The stairs are a portal to alcohol and burgers!

Aha, now you’re talking my language! Pity Australia is a little bit more than a 10 minute drive from Cambridge ;D

I’d be keen

Probably just do it in Gamemaker, as it’s quick. Paint.net for the sprites.

Well…

Well, I’m in again. I’ll be using my usual. My engine library, gale/ gimp for graphics, flashdevelop and flixel and maybe flashpunk. I wonder if I’ll make a game this time?

Best JavaScript lib?

I’m considering using JavaScript for this LD. Searching for good game libs on google is frustrating. What is the best / easiest lib available these days? I’m looking for something like flashpunk.

Thanks!

I’ve never used flashpunk, but I found native canvas 2D coding to be extremely simple. Here’s a little experiment of mine from some moths back that shouldn’t be too difficult to decypher.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m kinda torn between starting from scratch with something like what pov has or trying to find the most completely and best suited lib I can.

I’ll plug PixieEngine, a web base IDE that I recently launched. It’s still in beta so some parts are rough, but the main advantage is that it’s web based so there is no install required. Check it out and let me know what you think, I’ll personally be using it for the upcoming compo. If you have any questions just ask.

Can’t wate for LD #20!

Its gonna be awesome and in 15 days, wow. The 20th LD seems to be a big acheavment in LD history, so I think it will be one to remember!

Cant wate!

I’m still wateing.

Heres what’s been going on

Anyone who has read some of my previous posts on here would know that I was going to make games for all the old LD themes. Well I’m still doing that! I have a vacation this next week-and-a-half-ish and I plan to get at least my LD0 catchup done. Now I agree that that’s not so much for 11 days but I’m not sure whether I’ll finish even that as there is practically a literal ton of work for me to do. Here are some of the things I plan to do this vacation (and I might be forgetting some):
– LD0 catchup
– study for my SATII English test (this will involve at least two practice tests and therefore at least 2 hours)
– study for the USAMO math exam (this will involve taking at least two old tests and therefore at least 18 hours)
– go to the Queens Hall of Science (at least 2 hours commuting + at least 1 hour there)
– write a small math paper
– do all my Homework
– visit some colleges
– clean my C drive and install all the stuff I want to have but don’t
– start learning to use Unity 3d, Python, and LaTeX (not necessarily in that order and with Mathematica as a much lower priority)
– there’s a very small chance that I will go back and make my miniLD24 game idea
– figure out a way to make music for the games
– read a large variety of books which I’ve had lined up for a while (i.e. Lord of the Rings, Elementary Geometry from an Advanced Standpoint, some physics book about non-Newtonian fluids, The World is Flat a Brief History of the Twenty-first Century, etc…)

As you see, I’ll be extra busy. And this extra-business will carry over well past the vacation. The two days after vacation is USAMO and the second is also college night at my school. This is not to mention that I have tests in a lot of my classes. And after working through USAMO, will I get some rest? Not until after LD 20! I have every intention of participating in that as well (but of course shit happens sometimes so I won’t be too disappointed if I don’t finish).

Anyway, that’s what’s going on in my world. So thanks for listening to (or rather reading) my rant, and if you have any suggestions for how to do some of the programming or sound stuff from the list above, please comment.

I have no real suggestions, but I have to say that your LD catchup project sounds bad-ass, and I think maybe I’m going to try that too!

Well let’s hope I don’t forget again.

I’m in. Again. Although… I did say that last time. AND THEN FORGOT. -_-

I’m torn between using C++/SDL, and FlashPunk. Either way, it’ll be GIMP for images, sfxr for sound effects and I HAVE NO IDEA for music.

One factor in favor of FlashPunk is that your game will be web playable, which means you’ll get more people voting on your entry (since they don’t have to download anything).

You might want to join the mailing list:

“I will be participating in the compo”

I participated in the LD #19 and I liked it a lot. So I thought I would try LD #20.
* Language: Java
* IDE: Eclipse
* Libraries: Slick2D, Jbox2D
* Graphics: Paint.net
* Sound: Sound Recorder (Unless if I get serious about sounds)

Third time’s a charm!

Hey y’all, I managed to get some space in my schedule, so here goes my third Ludum Dare! In the past couple months, I’ve read several books on game design, vastly improved my music skills (here’s an example: http://tinyurl.com/3mpjcej), and somewhat improved my programming skills. Get ready Ludum Dare, Cooshinator is coming!

Here are some tools I’ll be using:

  • Programming: FlashDevelop
  • Engine: FlashPunk
  • Graphics: GIMP 2.6 with crappy (yet effective) graphics tablet
  • Music: LSDJ or FamiTracker

I’ll be using a whole new approach this time, so I hope everything works out. I greatly look forward to both making a game and enjoying everyone else’s games.

Ludum Darers of the World, Unite!

4th attempt.  Hopefully first finish.

I’m going to change it up a little this time and try to use either Flash or Unity, instead of my usual Python, since all you hipsters seem to have a lot of luck with both of them.

There’s a first time for everything =)

Just started to look into OpenGL so this’ll be interesting for sure. Since this is my first Ludum Dare i’ll try to finish something that’s not totally unplayable rather than aim high and fail miserably =)

  • Language: C#
  • IDE: Visual Studio 2010
  • Libraries: OpenTK (opengl wrapper)
  • Graphics: Fireworks
  • Sound: as3sfxr

LD20

Well, there’s a first time for everything, and I’m finally entering LD. Something I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time now.

I will also code my first game in C#/XNA, so it’s a double first time. Being an old flasher, and having experimented for a couple of days, I’m pretty hopeful though =)

Tools:

  • Visual Studio 2010 Express
  • Paint/Photoshop
  • Sound:??? Probably as3 sfxr
  • Frameworks: XNA, don’t know if I will need any other components…

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to this! See you there =)

Ludum Dare 20

Well, I’m back to do this again for a second time! Now that I know what I can do I might be able to legit finish a game >_<

Tools:
Action Script 3 with Flashpunk

CoreDraw10 or Photofiltre

sfxr

Another first timer

Hi guys,

If all goes to plan this will be my first LD and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m a veteran of the UK games industry and I’ve always messed about developing my own games. I appreciate most people will be developing for mobile and the web. I wish I could do that with confidence in the result but I’m oldschool. I’ll be producing a download and it’ll run on Windows.

I’ll be using the following tools:

Code/engine – Blitz 3D

Graphics pipeline – Metasequoia & Serif Photoplus 8 to Ultimate Unwrap 3D to .b3d files

I don’t have the tools to rig characters so if any animation is required I’ll use work arounds using static models.

Sound – Simsynth, sfxr, Techno Ejay4,Magix Music Maker 2005 deluxe, Audiomatik, Audacity

Music – as above if I have time.

I’m not intending to use any code libraries but I do like to plunder the Blitz examples that come with the install for methods and techniques.

I don’t expect there to be time to do anything fancy graphics wise. Usually I’ll take several weeks over getting sound right or attempting to create some atmospheric music but all that will have to go by the board. Just enough time to create a working prototype of an idea.

If you want to follow my efforts I’m on twitter @pantomimepony and on tumblr http://pantoponyldare.tumblr.com/

I’m expecting this to be a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see what the theme is going to be. I’m just hoping it’s not ‘Royal Wedding…’

Wait, you don’t have tools to rig characters? Have you tried Blender? It does modeling, texturing, animation, render, AND post-production. And it exports to an assload of different formats.
16. Apr 2011 · 19:00 UTC
Yeah, I’ve heard Blender is the thing for building and rigging models. I downloaded it a while back with the intention of learning to use it’s non intuitive ‘built for productivity’ interface but never got round to it. So for now I shall stick to the tools I know inside out. Maybe for LD21 and using it with Unity…

The latest 2.57 version of Blender is supposed to have a better UI. (But I haven’t checked.)

Once More Around the Bend

Jack’s Back!

How convenient is that that LD20 rolls around just as a break appears in the Dark Acre development cycles? Uncanny, that.

Hoping to bring the improved levels of skills to craft a far better entry than the last one, but mostly just hoping to stay conscious and lucid enough to finish.

Bringing the usual suspects to bear:

  • Unity 3D Pro.
  • C# scripts programmed from scratch, same as before.
  • CS5 Suite, mostly Illustrator/Photoshop.
  • FL Studio 10 Producer Ed.
  • Pixelplacement’s iTween
  • The powers of darkness.

Looking forward to another weekend of madness and torture!

Third time !

After a strange roguelike and a failed “discovery-shuttle-dragging-the-moon-to-crush-aliens” thing, I’m in for the third time !

Probably in Jam though, I’ll use some of my existing code. Since I suck at graphics, there will be none. Same for the sound. However, I like networking, and multiplayer, so… Maybe a MUD ? We’ll see !

Hyped

Exiting times! So, this is my absolutely first Ludum Dare, hoping for a really cool theme! I’ve got some preparation done, going to try to capture my progress with both screencapture and webcam. (mostly for my own amusement).

Funny thing is, I will spend like 10 hours of the developement on traveling foot (train) and I’m also going to miss out on a few hours since I’m going to a party pretty far from here. So yeah, this will be intresting indeed.

Tools that’ll be used are:

Programming: Flash

Graphics: Paint/Photoshop/Grapics Gale, might use my camera to take photos depending on the theme.

Sound: sfxr /possible audio recorder

Music: pixelblipz, Audacity and Wavepad, possibly audio recorder

Oh, and btw, trying out chronolapse but it doesn’t seem to be compatible with my prefered resolution. I got 2 monitors which are both at 1920×1080. The picture, when capturing, however will only be “2560×720” which crops alot of the screen off. Chosing only one monitor in the settings gives me output that is centered between the screens, also cropped.

are there any other program I could try or am I simply doing something wrong here? (would prefer not to mess with my resolution settings, and I like my two monitors =3)

LD20 – A Possible Change of Plans

I can’t freaking stand AS3. It has really gotten old.

I want to use C++ and OpenGL for my game.

I’m also thinking of entering the jam with a game that I’ve been working on lately, but that’s not completely definite yet.

I just can’t stand AS3. It’s started to get to me. C++ is much better. And I’ve been learning OpenGL these past couple of days and it’s going fairly well.

That being said, if I do use the game I’ve been working on I’ll happily let folks know in advance, and I’ll share a bit about it at the start of the jam.

Peace,

— Mr. Dude

Welcome back. Long after Flash has faded into obscurity (about when they work out the bugs in the android port), after Java has returned to meaning coffee or an island, after Microsoft becomes focused on “iOS consultancy”, the C family of languages will remain, like cockroaches after a nuclear war, dragging OpenGL behind it (it’s still a state machine, dammit, conceptually pure, nevermind these object handle thinggies). These things weren’t designed to be pretty. They won’t make your life easier, coddle you, manage your memory or warn you if you pointer bomb some data structure with a stray comma (that’s an operator?). These are wartime languages, they get things done and they run everywhere (after a quick recompile, of course. Bytecode is for the weak).

Are you still using Ogre? Is it really ActionScript which is the problem or is it Flash?

I’m participating!

Once again I’ll be hopping in on this one. Hope to be able to dedicate a fair amount of time to this one.

As usual, resources will be:

  • Language: Ruby
  • Libraries: Gosu, Chingu
  • SFX: SFXR (or some variant thereon)
  • Music: Autotracker-C (or none at all)
  • Graphics: Pixen, Photoshop

What I do will depend on the theme, but I’m strongly leaning towards doing a platformer of some kind. I’ve never done one before, as I tend to do top-down action/puzzle games. I actually have a neat idea, but it’s too early to say whether it’d fit the theme or not.

On another note, Uhfgood and Mikhail Rudoy have inspired me, and I’m going to (attempt to) do a Ludum Dare catch-up series. I’ve got Monday off, and though I have some errands to run, I think I can fit in an LD0 (Indirect Interaction) game. LD0 was only 24 hours rather than 48, so fitting it into my schedule is reasonably easy. More thoughts on Monday.

Intent

Howdy,

I’m back again, I’m not 100% sure on my engine/middleware choice my last entry used cocos2d since I’ve never used it before and wanted to force my self to learn it but 2D only games really are not my thing most likely I’ll end up building things with openframeworks ( http://www.openframeworks.cc/ ) or ogre3d (http://www.www.ogre3d.org) this time around..

art wise I use photoshop w/ filterforge for raster stuff and modo3d for modeling
