LD20 April 29–May 2, 2011

LD20 – I’m In!

I shall be once again partaking in LD. Provided that Uni doesn’t have anything important due over that weekend 😛

Here’s what I shall be using for this comp:

Language: C#

LibrariesSFML2 (C# Version)

Audio: SFXR

Basecode: QuadTree.cs, TextureManager.cs, MathHelper.cs, InputHelper.cs

This time, I’ll try a more simpler approach, and build more of what I need rather than tinkering with pre-existing code to suit what I need.

Good luck everyone!

EDIT: Added “TextureManager.cs” base code to list of declared code.

EDIT 2: Fixed dependency issue of QuadTree by adding MathHelper.cs to the list of basecode, also added a small class that helps with Input…

Yet another first-timer

Well, let me add myself to the giant list of new folks for the upcoming LD #20.  I dropped by the IRC room last night and got some nice advice on useful tools and whatnot… thanks everyone.  A snag though!  I realized this morning that I’m actually moving that weekend!  This might not be as big a deal as it initially seems, though, as I’m only moving to the other side of the same building I’m already in, and I’m already pretty well packed up; it just means some valuable time is going to be eaten up by lugging boxes.  I still plan to compete!

I plan on using a SDL-based sprite framework that I’ve been working on lately… right now it’s in an unusable state though (being moved from using SDL blitting to sprites as textures in OpenGL).  Assuming it’s fixed in time for the competition, I’ll post the code somewhere for y’all so that I’m within the rules and whatnot.

Uuuhh… yup!  Nice to meet you all!  Let’s have us some fun!

EDIT:  Aaand… that SDL->OpenGL conversion I mentioned?  I think I’ gonna abort it and instead move to SFML.  I’ve been reading about it some today and it really seems like the way to go.  There’re benefits to working with SDL and learning how things like blitting work, of course, but if the API for SFML is as much better than SDL as people are making it seem, it would really speed things up for me… in addition to saving me from having to link in extra libraries for some of the stuff I’m doing.  I’m pretty sure this is one of the useful things someone told me about last night on IRC, but I never managed to get around to looking at it at the time because I was too busy playing with bfxr!  I should have listened to y’all better!  Belated thanks!

If all you’re doing is the grunt work of hauling boxes, it should work out great for you. If I sit writing code for too long, I get pretty groggy and can’t focus. I go out for a 10 minute fast walk, and it does wonders to boost my mood and focus for the next couple hours. If you interleave your coding with box hauling, your coding time should be very productive.

First Ludum Dare

Hey guys, this will be my first Ludum Dare.

I’ll be using  Java with Eclipse.

Paint.net.

sfxr.

I have FL Studio for music or I might check out Musagi.

and I’ll probably get a timelapse with chronolapse.

New Chronolapse Version (1.0.4)

Hey everybody,

As you prep your tools for the upcoming LD, remember to download the new version of Chronolapse (1.0.4). The last two versions had a fun little bug that broke the actual video encoding.

If you had recorded things with the broken versions, you can use the 1.0.4 release to encode them correctly.

Time to see if it’ll work under wine still… 😉

System.out.println(“Let the games be made!”);

Ludum dare tools I’m using:

Game Maker 8 (not enough experiance in c++ yet)
sfxr (for sounds )
GraphicsGale FreeEdition (for pixel art)
chronolapse (for the timelapse)
paint.net (for other art like backgrounds)
my brain (for thinking)
my hands (for typing)

Thats about it…

-This post has been approved by pants (thats right I said it)

P.S. Good luck to you all!
PSS. remember im a bug and you dont want to find me.

I’m in for LD #20

I’ll be trying again with LD20.  I’m planning on using the same tools as last time:

Hardware: Macbook Pro, Wacom Tablet

Game Engine, Languages, & Tools:  Unity 3D Pro 3.x, C#, MonoDevelop IDE

Graphics & Art: Corel Painter 10, Pixelmator, Pixen, Blender 2.57

Music & Audio: sfxr, Wolfram Tones for music, GarageBand

Libraries:  Nothing of note planned on so far – I’ll post things as I find them for particular concepts but I’m planning on keeping this pretty pinned down in scope.

LD #20!

This will be my second Ludum Dare! Last LD, I used GameMaker to create a fairly simple rouge-like that was pretty bug ridden. Since then, I’ve moved on to flash development! Yay! I’ve learned quite a bit and I’m excited to put all of it into LD20

I will be programming in AS3 using FlashDevelop. I will also be using a modified version of Chevvy Ray’s fantastic FlashPunk library, BFXR for sounds, and (if I can do it/have time to do it) pxtone for the sound track.

Good luck to all! =]

-Alex

[edit] Here’s the source code for my modified version of FlashPunk: http://www.mediafire.com/?8kss9bippwbgbei

public IntentDeclaration id = com.ludumdare.getIntentDeclarationFactory().spawn();

Got permission to leave work early, told the girlfriend I’d be unavailable on that Saturday, loaded up on cheap energy bars, prepped and ready to go!

The usual:

  • Hardware: Eee 1201n, some crappy $2 USB mouse, Canon Powershot SX 120 with grit in the optics, a brain.
  • Targets: Win32, GP2X (maybe), OpenPandora, x86 Linux, source tarball.
  • Code: GCC 4.4.5, along with as, ld and friends.
  • Toolkit: Allegro, AllegroGL as needed.
  • Sound: SFXR, MilkyTracker.
  • GFX: Gimp, Misfit Model 3D (maybe).
  • Other: Graph paper, sketch pad, pencils, celery, carrots, trail running shoes, hella* Red Bull.

If the rules are amenable to it, it would be nice to do a farming-related game, and to do something that could be entirely stylus/mouse driven, but we’ll see.

*Of course ‘hella’ is a word, don’t be ridiculous.

Build Successful.

OpenPandora, eh? Nice!

Let’s do this thang.

Game Maker.

SFXR.

Paint.net.

Sonar 8.

I am prepared for battle.

On a more serious note, I’m totally doing this. I don’t remember what nth LD this is for me, but I’m really starting to feel settled into the feel of things. It’s nice feeling on top of things, even though I’m relatively new compared to some of you (My first LD was #14, but I didn’t do at least one of the ones in between, plus I did a few miniLDs). I even warmed up a bit by making a fun little laser-on-mirrors game!

I feel prepared for once.

cool another game maker user 😀

Third time’s a (monstrously radioactive evil) charm

Once upon a time there was a snail. This snail liked to enter online programming events and write games. One day, he heard (or however snails sense the outside world) about a 20th Ludum Dare, and decided to enter it. Little did he know of the catostrophic consequences which entailed…..

Nethertheless, the snail posted his framework (written using C++, HGE, luabind, and Audiere) at SOME MAGICAL FARM and awaited the announcement of the theme.

Hey, it’s the big Two-Oh! The next one will be legally allowed to purchase alcohol in the states!

[WITTY DECLARATION TITLE]

Hey all!

Gonna be entering my second LD.

Hardware: Shitty Laptop, Mutant PC consisting of three or four other PCs, those sound things that go over your ears.

Softcore… ware: Unity 3D, Photoshop CS5, sfxr(can’t not), gonna attempt Fruity Loops again, Lightwave if I go 3D (most likely won’t.)

Chronolapse: On both comps, Ooooh Yeeeeah gonna DP* this thing. Expect long periods of inactively from one or more views.

Notebook: Of Paper

Other: Dr. Pepper, ITunes Radio Stations, Massage Chair… Working from home this time.

Good luck to everyone. Let’s make sure the theme is just as ambiguous this time around.

*You heard me.

A wild programmer appears!

I’ll be in for LD#20, my second one. Had a pretty good time last time, and hoping this one will go just as well.

Nothing’s final till the game is done, but tools likely to be used:

Good luck to everybody entering ^^.

Nice title!! Good luck. x

I’m in!

Hey, this is my first Ludum dare, meant to do the last one but didn’t get the motivation. I’m a programmer in the boring world of point of sales systems, who aspires to be an indie game developer.

Going to be using AdamAtomic’s flixel engine, and FlashDevelop for the game. I usually work in UDK, but making a UDK game in 48 hours just plain isn’t going to happen.:P For music I’m going to use musagi, and Paint.net for all my sprites and tiles. I’m planning on livestreaming the whole deal, and keeping a little tumblr blog.

I’ve stocked up on coffee, and read all sorts of documentation. Should be fun, even if I terribly fail to produce anything of note.

Well good luck!

Less than a week to go!

Finally an LD I have NOTHING preventing me from entering! The last one I entered was LD17 when I was back in the UK, so about a year ago. This time, I’m settled down living and working in Australia! Sadly it’s actually warmer back in my home town than in Canberra at the moment. Anyhow weather doesn’t matter at all, I shall be spending next weekend locked in my bedroom with the following to aid me with my entry:

– 17″ Macbook Pro w/ a second monitor hooked up.
– EeePC 900A
– A small whiteboard.
– Lots of energy drinks, chocolate, and general readily eatable food stuffs.

For this entry I will also be using my own engine, Psybrus, rather than build the tech entirely from scratch. If you are interested, you will see a lot of last minute frantic work being committed over the next week so I have something usable. I’m currently using the following libraries with it:

– Gamemonkey
– Freetype
– Jsoncpp
– libpng
– zlib
– SDL

Basically, I want to write the entire game in Gamemonkey, and have more time to spend focusing on a game this time around than messing about with fiddly technical bugs. Ever so slightly envious of those using Unity, having a solid foundation there, but I like to write my own tech for various reasons.

Software-wise, I will likely be using any, or all of the following in the development of my entry:

– Xcode
– Visual Studio
– The GIMP
– Blender
– Ableton Live
– Garage Band
– Audacity

Right, I best get on with some preparation…or maybe some more Portal 2.

New Guy

Entering #20 if I can find the time (My brother’s birthday’s on the 29th). This will be my first compo and my first published game.

Working off an acer laptop with Intel  graphics. (yeah, that’s not really a priority for me)

Going to be using either LWJGL if I can get it to work and have enough development time, or pyGame. (probably pyGame)

Combination of MSPaint and  GIMP for graphics. (Maybe MyPaint too, for background stuff)

Gonna try out sfxr.

My declaration of intent

So this time I’m going to be trying something new and using chingu and ruby for my game. It’ll be interesting working out how to package it.

Other tools:

  • GIMP for image editing
  • sfxr for sound
  • Slightly modified version of Autotracker-C for music
  • Chronolapse for the timelapse
  • Music from Homestuck for listening purposes

Alpha Version of Kung Fu FIGHT! (Act I)

While I haven’t yet gotten around to working more on my LD19 entry, Observatory, in the spirit of LD48 I took a few days after the compo and prototyped a little game in flash.

I thought the idea had promise, so I’ve been working on a Windows version of the game. The first section is now pretty much complete:

I just released an alpha version that you can download here.

Everyone who gives me feedback on the game gets their name in the playable credits, so give it a try and let me know what you think!

If you so desire, you can try the original flash version here.

Oh, and I’m planning on participating in LD20 – probably using the framework I developed for this game.

I played the game and all in all it’s really good for an Alpha.
24. Apr 2011 · 14:08 UTC
Thanks for giving it a try – glad you enjoyed it! It is indeed a difficult game :-)

I’m in for LD20!

First time participant.

Will be writing the game in Linux, crosscompiling for Windows as well. Given a day or two extra, I’ll probably throw up a Mac OS X port, too (at least I hope to)…

Language: C
Libraries: OpenGL, SDL, stb_image.c

I’m also working on my own ‘framework’-code, that helps me do basic stuff like sprite animation, tilemap rendering, collision detection, whatnot.  This code contains its own binary format for tilemaps, tilesets, and sprite animations – and I also got some extremely ad-hoc editors to go along with this.

For sound, I’ll probably only use sfxr, and perhaps audacity + my own microphone.

For music, if I get to that, I’ll probably make some beats with Hydrogen Drum Machine.

For graphics, I’ll use GIMP.

I haven’t figured out what to do with sound yet, so there’s a chance that my game will be silent – my ‘framework’ doesn’t yet have these things in place.  But, still almost an entire week left, right?

I’ll also make a timelapse, using a small shellscript, imagemagick (for taking screenshots every 10 seconds), and mencoder for making this into a video.

The DARE

I will FOR SURE be doing the Dare this coming weekend 😀

-Flash CS5 (Primary tool)

-MIGHT use Flash Builder/FlashDevelop (probably just use Flash Professional/scripts)

-Probably won’t use any external libraries, if I do I’ll TOTALLY update this post.

-Flash/Photoshop/MS Paint for graphics

-Sony ACID Music Studio 8 and Audacity for audio

-Gonna LIVESTREAM! Check out www.livestream.com/kranggames to watch :)

-Will post a chronolapse/post mortem after the whole shebang is said and done

IRC Problems Anyone?

Not sure if this is just me, but the IRC server is not letting me join any chat rooms. At first I got the message that my IP was blocked, so I setup AuthServ and it not authenticates and lets me send pm’s, but whenever I try to join a room it doesn’t do anything. Anyone got any ideas what’s going on? No error messages or anything, it just ignores my /join commands but I’m still connected and authenticated. I can try Meebo if all else fails but I really prefer to stay with Pidgin

Also I’m definitely intending to join in next weekend, though I’m rusty. Going to use this as an excuse to try something with WebGL

I can see you on #ludumdare, so I don’t know what might be up. It seems like you’ve been on there for a while.
