LD20 April 29–May 2, 2011

Double New

Hello. TL;DR version upfront: New, trying new language, done something similar before, probably end badly.

Some back-story:

I’ve had some friends do LD in the past, and that always seems fun. I even did a “homemade” 24-hour challenge with my good friend (Overkill/@Bananattack) where we had 5 tries to get a good name off the video game name generator and then make a game based entirely around the name in 24 hours. I got “Advanced Battleship Mission” to my delight, and the other guy got “Maximum Yak Attack”. To make it extra hard, we also got to inject an additional theme into each others game after the name was picked. Thinking I was clever I put “Multiplayer” into his game, and I got stuck with “GOATS”. Long story short, he made a game much like the old Rampage arcade game, and mine was some bizarre defense survival game with goats. They were both pretty rough, but it was fun to do.

In any case, I am new to Ludum Dare. Here are the tools I will be tinkering with:

Platform: Flash. Never done any Flash work before, but I figure this is as good a time as any to learn it.

IDE: FlashDevelop. I am a big fan of Visual Studio and they look pretty much the same. Also I have no idea how to compile Flash stuff myself so all the help I can get is great.

Libraries: Flixel or FlashPunk. I am not entirely sure which yet, but I have been running through some tutorials to get a feel for them.

Visuals: Paint.NET I guess. I am terrible at “art”.

Sounds: SFXR and whatever I can find that works for background music. I might just pull out my keyboard, play some random chords and then run it through some synthesizer and make it sound weird. That or just record me making sounds.

Other: Probably a few bottles of Dr. Pepper, a coffee or three, and some random video game music.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

I’m in…!?

I’m clearing my schedule, and trying to lay the ground-work to enter on Friday! I have no clue what I’ll be working in, since I do work with Java on Android, normally… If anybody can suggest something, I’m all ears. Otherwise, I’m thinking I’ll spend the week familiarizing myself with a pre-made framework, like pygame. In short, my tools:

  1. pygame?
  2. Photoshop
  3. Wacom tablet
  4. Fruity Loops
  5. Beer
  6. Stimulants
  7. Raw animal instinct
  8. Heart

I’m excited!

I’m In!

Hi this is gonna be my first Ludum Dare competition. I haven’t created many finished products so this competition will hopefully give me the nudge I need.

Language: I will be learning AS3 doing this project, If I hit a roadblock I might default to Java or even Game Maker.

IDE: FlashDevelop

Library: Flashpunk

Image: Photoshop 7

Sound: Undecided, probably Fruity Loops

Ok I’m in, now what?

It will be my first LD so my primary goal is to make something complete playable. Secondary goal is not being last in at least 1 category ;).

Platform: Flash

Libraries: flixel (maybe also nape)

IDE: FlashDevelop (for coding pure AS3 apps it sure beats Flash Builder hands down)

Graphics: GIMP

Sounds: SFXR (I doubt I’ll have time to create music which doesn’t make ears bleed)

I hope this will be an interesting and/or fun experience.

I’m in!

Hi, this will be my first Ludum Dare, so this should be interesting!

Platform: Java Applet

Tools:

  • Eclipse
  • GIMP
  • Audacity
  • SFXR
  • LMMS

I will also be using a custom game base library I call SGF, for the curious it can be downloaded here but its pretty basic.

I’m in

This will be my first ludum dare and I’m sure it will be rad. I will be making my entry in XNA (3.1), for graphic I will use Photoshop and for sounds sxfr.

I’m sure it will be fun and I’m looking forward to it.

Edit:

Oh yeah, forgot, I will probably be using http://mpe.codeplex.com/ too for all my particle needs.

I’m going to start, and finish!

I’m going to finish this LD, really, not like the last one or the last one where I couldn’t commit.

Tools:

Good lucky everyone!

Making Puzzles is Hard (LD catchup – LD0)

As I recently figured out, making good puzzles is hard. So now I will be trekking through a long period of puzzle level design, and when I’m done with that, I’ll finally wrap the whole game up with all the menus, tutorial screens, and other things that its missing right now. Unfortunately, that means you’re probably not seeing the game until some time after LD-proper. Fortunately, that also means the levels won’t completely suck.

Mikhail Rudoy

Ok, I’m doing this

Yeah, I’m ready for my second LD48. I’ve got Game Maker, GraphicsGale, MilkyTracker, BFXR, a computer, food, beer, and time– and I know how to use most of those things. Let’s go make games.

I’m In!

Seems to be a tradition to make a post saying your in. Well even though this is a mistake and I can’t really afford the time to do it, I am in.

I’ll be using:

  • Python
  • PyGame
  • Photoshop

I think that is all, maybe sfxr or one of it’s derivatives if I have time.

Im really interested in ur result, im usint the same instruments, but im not in

In!

Trying to get everything set up for this weekend.  Should be a lot of fun.

Flash CS5, Flash Builder 4, AS3.  First “major” project in AS3, after being a developer in AS2 for a long time…should be a nice challenge.

LD20 Wallpaper

I whined and screamed for over a month now about someone making me a shibby LD20 wallpaper. But just nobody caved in. So I caved in myself and found myself a cool tool to create myself a neato wallpaper for the LD20 event.

Here you go with a 1280 x 960 type of the wallpaper. Somebody need something different? Well just let it scale to fit the screen. I think, for my 5 minutes of time i did a decent job and it’s enough to get around.

Ludum Dare 20: Dare’s Revenge

LD20 Framework and Tool Declarations

Getting ready for Ludum Dare!

I’ll be using AS3, like I’ve done for previous Ludum Dares. Unless somehow I get an idea that would be better in 3d, in which case I will go with Unity.

Music: Coding theme song. Level design theme song. Gaps filled by Pandora.com.

Food: It has become part of my Ludum Dare ritual to go nuts buying snacks before LD weekend.

snax

Framework: Stego, the as3 framework that’s been grown out of the reusable parts of previous compos.

IDE: FlashDevelop.

Graphics: I’ll be doing pixelly sprite stuff in a copy of Photoshop CS 1 which as far as you know was obtained completely legitimately. I’d like to start doing more vector-based stuff, but I figure for LD I’d better stick with what I’m used to.

Music: I will probably mess around with GreaseMonkey’s music generator like I did for LD19. I’ve also used Wario Ware DIY and Wolfram Tones in the past and those kind of worked, so if for some reason I’m not liking what I’m getting out of one tool, I’ll switch to another.

Sound Effects: SFXR and/or BFXR.

Timelapse: Keeyai’s Chronolapse. It’s worked great so far.

Sauce Control: Mercurial, pushed to a repo on Bit Bucket.

Twitter: @ExciteMike

Interweb pagesite: http://excitemike.com/ Has my games and stuff.

Plan: At present, I am leaning toward doing something extremely simple, even for an LD game, but then have lots and lots of levels. I’d also love to make something multiplayer, but I don’t think people tend to have friends nearby when they go to play or rate LD games. Hmm, that sounds kind of sad when I say it that way. Point is, while multiplayer is often super fun, fewer people will be able to enjoy my game if it needs two willing people in the same room.

I cannot quite make out what is under the loaf of bread behind the check mix, but otherwise, I approve.

“throwback” Mountain Dew

LD 20 Rookie

Hi there! I’m a Computing Engineering student at Cádiz University (Spain) and this is my first time at a Ludum Dare Compo. Despite I’m sure I’ll find lots of rocks on the way, I’ll do my best and, anyway… That’s the spirit!

Well, here goes my war equipment:

  • Computer: netbook 10” screen, 1GHz processor and 1GB RAM (my main PC is on its way to the SAT).
  • OS: Ubuntu 10.04 (possible build for Windows too).
  • Language: C++.
  • Libraries: Gosu and Box2D (if it’s a physics based game).
  • Environment: GCC (compiler) and Geany (editor)
  • Graphics: Inkscape and GIMP.
  • Sound: sfxr.

Lots of luck to everyone!

Hey, greetings from California! I’m glad to see more people using Linux to make their entries! All the best of luck for the event, you will have a blast! =) I think my setup will be similar to yours. Have you checked out SFML? I haven’t used Gosu, but it looks like an interesting alternative.

I say take shotgun.

I too am, as they say, “in”!

LD19 coincided with a crunch at work, but LD20 falls smack bang on an extended bank holiday (who says the UK royal family are good for nothing, eh?). I will mostly be using Blender, Unity, Paint.NET, and Audacity. I haven’t tried composing music since 1995, so recommendations welcome…

Although I’m not out

I have serious concerns about calling what I plan to do this weekend as “in”. That being said, I’d like to try entering something.

I’ll be using the following

– IDE: Visual Studio 2010 Pro, Unity (3.x, free version)

– Graphics: paint.net, gimp

– Sound: sfxr

– A wicked lack of skills

– An obscene lack of talent

I never let a lack of skill keep meeee down. You’ll learn more during LD than just about any other time.

Just stopping by to say….

I’m out. I have a band trip to Nashville this weekend, sadly, so I won’t be able to participate.

I wish you all the best of luck, and may Kittens be the winning theme!
