ld 19 intent to enter

Alright, I am announcing my intent to enter this compo. This is my first true LD, although I used the october challange as an opportunity to put together a nongame software.

I am currently rushing to put together a game framework. I am building a lua wrapper around a large swath of openframeworks. I am also wrapping up a chunk of my own audio code, so that I can do real time audio synthesis in the game. The wrapper is currently being developed for iPhone, but I am going to try and get a osx port together by the end of this weekend.  I will stick them up on github as soon as they are  semi-solid.

So other than all of that groundwork that I need to jam on, I am also learning lua, and learning to type in dvorak (20WPM yay!). So yeah, pretty much trying to ensure my own failure. WOOOHOOOOO!

edit: bwap bwap, finally posted my engine code, have at it. Blud Engine. It isn’t as far as I would like it, but I figure I can code the rest this weekend.

Game plan

First off, the obligatory Tool List:

  • Programming language: ActionScript 3
  • Engine: PushButton Engine
  • Graphics Software: ToonBoom Animate 2, The GIMP
  • Graphics Hardware: Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet
  • Audio Software: SFXR, Audacity. Musagi or MilkyTracker
  • Audio Hardware: Cheap microphone. Possibly E-MU X-Board 25 MIDI keyboard

I got into Flash game development during October Challenge using FlashPunk. Since then though, I’ve been gravitating toward PushButton Engine, but I’ve run into this problem: My previous codebase ended up being a real mess, probably partly because I was learning FlashPunk and AS3 at the same time. I’m trying to avoid that this time, but that’s just making the development go really really slowly, especially since PBE’s documentation is frankly a little bit lacking. The solution of course is simple: For Ludum Dare #19, I will make a game using PBE without caring at all what the code will look like. This way I’ll learn more as I go and possibly discover some tricks along the way. This will make it easier to carry on with my other project in PBE later.

So in!

And this time, I’m only focusing on Game Development. I will be using the same tools as I did last time. Which are:

Flash Develop

Flixel

My Engine Library

Sfxr

Fruity Loops/WolframTones

Hopefully my library has expanded well enough that I can finish a game. But, just in case, guess what I’m doing this weekend/next week? That’s right. Finishing up core elements of what I may want to use. Because, well. I really want to finish a game this time.

See you there!

Further Speculation About LD19

I’ve decided to join the compo and not the jam. 72h just… Isn’t LD. It’s just not.

I’ll definitely be using FlashPunk (With Flex, of course) and I will definitely be doing a platformer.

I will use Tiled for my level editing along with adapting my Tiled to AS3 munge script for conversion.

The collision bits… I can recode those without much trouble. I simplified the hell out of it, and can probably remake it without too much fuss.

I’m not sure what to root for as far as the theme goes. The first round didn’t have many that I liked. Guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Peace

— Mr. Dude

FUCK YEAH LUDUM DARE

Totally taking part of course, and I’ll be doing it along with the other cambridge indies since I totally live nearby now.

what tools will I use? NOTHING BUT MY BARE HANDS, I SHALL POUND THE DIRT AND FROM IT SHALL RISE A GAME!

or I might use the usual stuff; unity, blender, sfxr, stuff. whatever.

Totally doing this!

There’s a big release the Monday immediately after LD, but I care not! I will do this!

We’ve also got a board game/ginger bread baking day planned with friends, but I still care not! Making games and eating junk takes precedence!

I will be developing my game in Java, using Eclipse.
For art, I will use Paint.net and quite possibly my wacom tablet thing + photoshop.
For sound, sfxr, of course. DrPetter is a wonderful human being for that tool.

I’ll record the entire thing using chronolapse, and stream it live on livestream.
Socially, I’ll be tweeting and hanging out in the irc channel, and I’ll try to post something on here every now and then.
Food will be fatty and salty, and there will be red bull.

Good luck, everybody! I’ll see you next weekend!

The minecraft dude?

Doing this thing

Hi All,

Just saying I will definitely be entering. Going to be using Unity3D. Still not fully comfortably with it but going to keep trying. I will be going the guys at CB2 in Cambridge for my first live Jam which should be fun.

Cheers,

Claire

wheee, good luck, I’ll see you there! 😀

My First LD

Hello LD community.  I’ve been following LD since #18 (not long, I know) and I thought I’d try my hand at the main competition.  I’m exceptionally excited and I’m on the lookout for tips from veterans.  Could someone direct me to where the LD community congregates?  I’ve heard mention of an IRC channel…

I’ll be developing in python 3 with pyGame and possibly pyOpenGL depending on the nature of the project.  If anyone has experience creating standalone apps or at least using distutils to package the correct items with any of those modules, I’d be very grateful for advice.

Looking forward to a great competition!

P.S.  Advice on screencap software for a Windows environment is welcome too.  I have none and don’t wish to buy any.  Email is the best way to contact me -check my profile.  Thank you all very much!

For congregating, we have IRC and this blog. I recommend using both. :-)

Hey, I can’t seem to find your e-mail, so I’ll just post my suggestion here:

LD19 – Declaration of Intent

am I getting married?

I’m in this time round – Hopefully I’ll not lose my mojo halfway through and quit like last time, but that theme just didn’t motivate me at all…

Anyway, moving swiftly on…

My weapons will be as follows :
BlitzMax (windows / linux) – code
The GNU Image Manipulation Program (windows / linux) – graphics
MS Paint (windows) – graphics
KolourPaint (linux) – graphics
sfxr – sound
ModPlug Tracker – sound

Seeing a lot of new faces around here, too.

LD19 prep time.

First Ludum dare.

First Post.

First Heart attack only days away.

I’ll be using:

HGE (2d c++ game engine)

Audacity

Paint .net

That’s it!

An attractive minimalist design.

Taking part, etc

So, I suppose I’ll actually take part this time (as opposed to having an account for no reason), Im new to LD so wish me luck! 😀

My tools:

Graphics – paint.net

Engine – Laboratory (if FuzzySpoon updates it soon enough and it is ok with him) otherwise python with pygame

Sound effects – sfxr

I might write some tools before the comp, but will see how the week goes 😛

I’m in !

Hi !

It’s my first try for Ludum Dare,

I will use :

– Programming: haXe and FlashDevelop

– Graphism : Gale and/or Flahs CS4

– Sounds : sfxr maybe musagi too

– [Edit] I will also use this lib for bitmap display and animation with AS3

Good luck everyone !

I’m in !

And for the second time, I’ll be here. And hopefully, I’ll do something with graphics, and able to run on windows \o/

Hello Everyone!

This will be my first LD compo! I’ve been wanting to jump in for awhile and now that this one falls nicely into my schedule, I’ll be participating. Yayyy!

Weapons of Choice:
-Game Maker 8
-Paint.net
-GraphicsGale
-sfxr

Good luck everybody! =]

Me too

Probably going to use Löve, so lua will be the language — should be easy to make Windows and OS X distributions. Most of the work will be done in a terminal running screen and vim :-) Other than that, I might use Gimp, Inkscape, Blender, Apple Logic, Native Instruments’ Komplete,… whatever makes sense at the time. Oh, and this is my first LD.

Loooooodahm Dhare!

Winter-y greetings to everyone! I’m all excited for this festive Ludum Dare. I know it will be tons of fun.

This will be my third Ludum Dare. I’m not a veteran yet, but I think I’m starting to get the hang of things. I more-or-less follow Sol’s tricks and tips, plus or minus some of the more saner advice. *cough*

In fact, I enjoy it so much that I’ve had great success applying the Ludum Dare method to my projects. It’s great to get a prototype up and running in a mere 48 hours.

This Ludum Dare will be different for me! More on that later, when I figure exactly how it will be different. :) What I do know for sure is that I’ll be doing my Ludum challenge along with a friend. We haven’t decided yet if we’re going to team up for a Jam game or do our own separate projects. Either way, it should be fun.

I’ll post about my tools/libraries later, as I intend to release my Flixel code base with lots of improvements over last year.

Legacy

I’ll try to make a more serious effort this go-around in honor of Tron Legacy, which hopefully will help grow another generation of game developers the way that Tron did for my generation.

Hello, pythoner here

This will be my 3rd attempt at Ludum Dare and hopefully my first success!

I will be using Python with Pygame  and/or libtcod(since I use it for everything, even for stuff that just Pygame would be better off doing itself :P).

Good luck everyone, and I look forward to seeing a game of mine on the same list as all of yours!

Little Ninja – A Game I’ve Been Working On

This isn’t directly LD-related (Though you could consider it some kind of warmup or practice), but I’ve been working on a game titled “Little Ninja”.

It’s a platformer where you play as a ninja fighting other ninjas to… Well, I don’t have the full plot right now, actually.

Currently, there is a test level and two types of baddies. (Swordsmen and archers).

If anyone here would like to try it, you can find it here on my Dropbox. (Plays in browser, requires Flash)

Edit: Here are the controls:

  • Move – Arrow Keys
  • Attack – Z
  • Jump – X
  • Run – Hold C and Move
  • Drop through Ledge – Hold down and Jump
  • Wall-Slide – Jump into wall (You don’t need to hold the button, you’ll stick to the wall)
  • Wall-Jump – Wall-Slide, then Jump

Here’s a screenie:

Action shot! A fight amongst ninjas!

I like this, its quite fun. The enemies are very different and provide a nice contrast to each other and the player is easy to control.I would like to see some checkpoints but thats it.

The enemy AI is quite interesting and reasonably intelligent, especially for a platformer. It needs more variety, but that is only to be expected from a work-in-progress.

Interesting art style. It looks kind of like the characters limbs are individually rotated sprites. Is that actually the case?
