LD29 April 25–28, 2014

LD29 Day 0

I hope my real second LD will go well! Last time I had no inspiration for the theme, so I quit early without submitting. In August last year I made a nice game though, that I still want to develop further. Since I’m not always at home I’m  probably going to join the Jam, and since I made myself familiar with Java and OpenGL, I’m going to use those.

This is my tool package:

Engine: Java with LWJGL and SlickUtil
Graphics: Probably no external program, because using shapes, or else Photoshop and/or Inkscape
Music and SFX: FruityLoops Studio

I wish you and myself good luck!

A quick guide for Ludum Dare 29(or any jam really)

With Ludum Dare 29 I decided to write some tips for everyone participating.

  • Assemble your team a week or so before the jam starts.
  • If you do get a team then get together. It’s the best way to know what everyone is doing and to keep each other motivated.
  • Have your development environment ready, and tested. If you wanna try something new, do it before the jam.
  • Generate as many game ideas as possible now and just tag them with the appropriate theme suggestions. (thanks @gnerkus)
  • Start small and focus on the core ideia of your game.
  • Make it work. Feature is breaking your game and you can’t fix it? Remove it. Don’t have enough time to make the planned 100 levels? Make 3 good ones. Stop making excuses and start making your game. Get it done.
  • Take screenshots of game’s progress. Believe me, it’s nice to look back and see how much work you got done.

When the Ludum Dare ends look back through the screenshots and maybe do a postmortem about it. Remeber to keep checking for users comments and feedback. Also, don’t forget: making games is not playing games, it’s a lot of hard work before you can enjoy your creation with others.

Good luck!

I’m In, First Ludum

Hi guys,

this is my first Ludum Dare participation and I’m very excited. I’m looking forward for the challenges ahead and I hope I’ll have a lot of fun during the jam.

My tools are:

Engine: Unity3D (C#) with some LeanTween love

Graphics: Blender, MakeHuman, Krita, Gimp, Inkscape, depending on theme

  MusicAutotrackerwww.abundant-music.com, iNudge

  Sound: Bfxr, Audacity

  Timelapse: Chronolapse

  SourceControl: Bitbucket

UPDATE: After reading the sticky here I might use other unity plugins as well like Playmaker, Daikon Forge, Grids… depending on the game.

I wish you all a really good time.

Excited for the Jam

So, this will be our second entry to the Jam. We are excited again, having formed a different team.

I feel like, we could have put in a lot more effort in the last LD Jam… So, the goal is, to stop slacking, keeping each other motivated and hopefully creating a decent game, that we can also build on after the Ludum Dare. So to speak, a start for a new game.

We are a team of 4 people.

Tools we use:

Engine: CraftStudio

Graphics: Photoshop, Inkscape

Audio: Audacity, Fruity Loops, Bfxr

Well then. We will see you on the weekend. Have fun and best of luck. :3

I’m in…

This is my sixth Ludum Dare. :) The last three times I used ImpactJS so I think I will use it again. Good luck everyone!

Count me in too!

Hi to all!

A small message to say that I’m in for my first participation (third jam after Cyberpunkjam and Mini LD 50) and I really don’t know what to expect!! It’s strange cause I’m kinda excited and stressed at the same time. For my first compo, my main objective is to have fun and to be able to deliver something, anything, what is in itself a challenge cause I’m a slow developper and an even slower artist XD

I’m also really eager to play all the crazy games that you’ll all come up with!

For my tools, here’s what I’ll use:

Main Engine: Unity (C#)

IDE : MonoDevelop (it’s the only one I know on Mac)

Graphics : Photoshop / Pixen / Tiled (if needed)

Sounds: Ableton Live / Audacity / Bfxr

Good luck to everybody and I hope we all have fun during this crazy weekend!

I tried thinking about a different title than the last two times, but I have no idea of another one 😀

So, I’m yet again in for the compo, hopefully with a better game than last time.

These are the tools I’m going to be using:

Graphics: Gimp, Paint.Net

Music: ?

Sound: Bfxr

Libraries: LibGDX + maybe Box2D and Box2DLights extension.

Have fun everyone, and make great games again, I can’t wait to play yours! :)

The adventure begins!

Hello guys!

This is going to be my first Ludum Dare experience!

I’m trying my luck in the compo. Here are the tools I’m going to use:

Engine: Unity 3D

Plugins/External libraries: LeanTween

Scripting:

  • Language: C#
  • IDE: Visual Studio 2012

3D modelling: Blender, MakeHuman (maybe)

2D art: Krita / GIMP 2

Sound: OpenMPT, Bfxr, Audacity, Ibanez RGR321EX + Metal Muff

Imagination means nothing without doing. Have fun!

Back, and this time with a new plan…

Good evening all,

I am taking a weekend away from working on Alien:Isolation to get stuck into another Ludum Dare! 😀

Carefully planning this game jam and have decided upon a few rules and since the last LD48 and I am going to share them here.

I am sticking with my usual tools,

Game Maker – https://www.yoyogames.com/studio

BFXR http://www.bfxr.net/

Photoshop (some really old version from somewhere …)

Audacity/Premiere, etc…

Also adding Garage Band as my music creator. I used it a few times since last LD48 and at the Global Game Jam with Team Twoolley.

Still using xmind for my brainstorming and I recommend it to anyone who likes to organise their thoughts and ideas quickly. – http://www.xmind.net/

Also, NBA League pass will be on in the background as it is the playoffs… (Go Heat!) – www.nba.com/nba_tv/league_pass.html

My last LD48 was snatched from the jaws of defeat. After losing nearly everything I had about an hour before the deadline, I gave up. The next evening I planned to put it back together slowly over a few nights and ended up doing it quicker than I thought, making the entry for the 72 hour deadline with minutes to spare. This has given me an idea.

I am going to set an hourly alarm… each hour I will take a couple of minutes to save my project under a new name, write a post giving an update and then get back to it. This should help with the following

1. It will force me to write more posts

2. It will avoid the issues I had with game maker last time by creating new projects

3. It will give me a stronger understanding of the time I am taking on each task

I have also moved house since the last LD48 so this will be the first game jam with my new setup in a new place. (new photos!)

So, all prepped and ready to go. Got a good feeling about this one and it will be nice to get my head down again, put my body through the lack of sleep, complete creative out pour, and then last minute panic.

Go game Jammers!

G

Hm, the hourly save system sounds like a great idea. I especially like your last point; I would really like to know how much time I use for different tasks. I might do the same (although w/o the update part, I don’t really feel like spending so much time on writing posts). Thanks for sharing!

I’m in!

This will be my first time participating in Ludum Dare!  I am pretty psyched about it! I haven’t attempted to make a game in a bit.

What I’ll be using:

Engine: Unity 2D (JavaScript)
Graphics: Inkscape
Music: SunVoxSound FX: sfxr

Things I should be doing this weekend:

  • Stundying
  • Cleaning My Room (I would just make it dirty again anyhow)
  • Going to a friends BBQ

I am really hoping “You are the World” wins but all the themes in the Final Round looked pretty interesting.

I probably wont stream but I may post a before and after video.

What’s that button for ? o_O

With my friend, we will participate in 72 hour edition of Ludum Dare for the first time.
We’re really excited and curious of theme 😀

What we will be using :
Code : C#/XNA (with our own framework)
Graphics : GIMP
Sounds and Music : FL Studio and SFXR

Except “Ludum Dare’ing”, we’ll be learning Haskell for our studies 😀

We will be also streaming at Twitch.

Good luck everyone and have fun 😀

My Second LD!

In this LD I’m planning to use:

  • Language: HTML/Javascript
  • Engine: CreateJS
  • Editor: SublimeText 3 <3
  • Graphics: Inkscape and Gimp
  • Audio: Audacity, bfxr, an old mic, voice and guitar

I will also use a library I’m developing for CreateJS, called Creatine. It is a baby yet but there is some useful features such as scene, transitions, and layout manager. I’m sharing Creatine here:

Ludum Dare 29? I’m in!

Engine: Unity

Graphics: Gimp

Audio: What’s that?

I tried a Ludum Dare a couple of years ago, but had to bow out early Saturday morning to pick up someone’s missed shift at work.  Hopefully this time it goes better!

I’m in

During this event, I’ll probably use:

Language: C++

Library: SFML

IDE: Xcode

Graphics: Photoshop or Pixen

Audio: Audacity, cfxr and Garageband

Good luck everyone and have fun!

I’d better just use all of them

After looking over the themes in the final round of voting, I think I’ve come up with a game plan which will be safe to use no matter which theme is chosen:

The game is set on a deep space station (Deep Space), where you’re all by yourself (Isolation).  You have a monotonous task that you do every day (It Never Ends).  The game doesn’t even keep track of how many times you do it, and does not show you the passage of time; the clocks don’t even work (Time Does Not Exist).  Eventually, as the player, you will do something wrong or decide not to do it at all (Break the Rules).  At that point, the systems on the station begin to malfunction gradually (Glitch) (It’s NOT supposed to do THAT!).  Finally, the normally brightly-lit station goes dark (Contrast), and everything begins to break (Everything Breaks) as you escape.  The escape pod lands on a planet with a very fast rotation so that it changes between day and night very quickly (Night and Day).  Eventually as you explore, you find some ruins (Ruins), and the ruins lead to a hidden civilization beneath the surface (Beneath the Surface).  You are obstructed by cyborgs that are replaced with smarter and adaptive ones as they are defeated (Generations).  You keep going deeper into the hidden city (We Must Go Deeper) until you reach the core that is controlling everything (Everything is Connected).  You fuse with the core and gain control of some of the immediate cyborgs (Control More Than One), which you guide into the power core to act as fuel to finish powering up the city (Death is Useful).  Eventually, you complete the power up and gain control of the whole planet (You Are The World), which immediately spawns a clone of you (Two Worlds).  Finally, you have a celestial battle to the death with the other planet (You Are Your Own Enemy).

…No, I’m not serious.  That would be a nightmarish 48 hours.  I’ll wait for the actual theme like everyone else.

I’m in – well, sort of

It’s Ludum Dare time already? By the Gods how time flies by. Sadly I don’t have much time this weekend so the plan is to create something small.

I will be using java with libGDX, just likie last time. For graphics Photoshop and Tiled. For sound SFXR.

As allways good luck and have fun!

More basecode nobody will ever use anyway!

So here’s a tiny framework I made for ludum dare in c++ that I might not even use ^^
This
It uses glfw3, glew, boost and openAL  for context creation and stuff…
Other than that, it provides a minimal gameloop that updates and draws components seperately and it can register global initializers for stuff… how cool’s that?

Nothing big, really.

3D Graphics?

Hey Guys, I have been trying to hit 3D graphics for a while. I’m using C++ and i do not want to drift off to a game engine. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe something relatively simple. I’m currently using SDL2.0 for 2D. Thanks! GameGrape Corporation: www.codingrevolution.blogspot.com

If you want to roll your own, i suggest SDL+OpenGL, I did that, and must admit, after playing with Irrlicht, that I regret it a tiny bit 😛

I’ve been waiting four months for this!

I’m pretty excited about this edition of Ludum Dare. This will be my second Ludum Dare and I hope to make a much better game. Here’s my toolkit:

Language: Javascript

Libraary: Phaser.js

Editor: Sublime Text 3

Graphics: Inkscape, Gimp

Audio: Musescore, Audacity

I’ve had a little difficulty coming up with ideas for some of the themes so I’m hoping my Sith Lord antics worked.

I hope you all enjoy Ludum Dare as much as I will. Good luck!
